The waiters took FOREVER (almost 30 minutes) to attend to us and even when we flagged them down, this one lady said that she only takes drink orders and we had to get our main orders from somewhere else. SoF never disappoints. Their quality of food always meets my expectations. Always start with spicy edamame. No it's not that spicy but it gives a good kick. Comes out steaming hot and fresh every time. Onto entree: HB sun looks and taste very pretty. If you are one that craves sauce get this one. Dip it in sauce, dip it in soy sauce, and deposit the goodness into you mouth, you deserve it. If you are craving sashimi, please do yourself a favor and get the sashimi salad and/or the four points. Both will give an abundant amount and fills your taste buds. The only complaint I may have would be how loud it can get. Usually there would be birthday size parties (complimentary cake/firework show is actually pretty cool) which prevents you having a conversation with the person right across from you. This place was delicious! A bit expensive, but were it not for that I would definitely be back without hesitation. I went here on a double date last Saturday. We had to wait a little while, only about 20 minutes. I didn't think that was too bad for a Saturday night around 9 while the rest of 2nd street was hoppin. We all ordered a beer and the waitress brought us over some free sake (which judging by the list is a common thing they do). My bf and I split a Refreshing roll and some salmon sashimi. I LOVE sushi on fire! I go with my bf at least once a month because we only live about two miles from this location on second street. I think it's quaint, generally busy most nights. The sushi is always prepared well and I haven't encountered a foul smell or experienced a stomach ache; been coming here since August 2018. Lol I only add that because I'm sure we've all had our fair share of bad sushi. The service is above par, they're quick to respond even on busy nights, and their very polite. Extremely disappointed by my experience. Let me start by saying I have been to sushi on fire prior COVID-19 and had quite a pleasant experience. I was craving sushi and this was always my number 1 place in Belmont shores area. I called in an order for Togo. The first time I called, the person answered and immediately hung up. I called again, and the person answered and then put me on hold without even telling me they would put me on hold. I put in my order and started my drive over the place. Once I arrived, I noticed all the employees were wearing masks but NO MASK WAS COVERING THEIR NOSE NOR MOUTH. The chefs that were rolling the sushi @ the bar had their masks on their CHIN not their MOUTH/NOSE. They were all laughing and talking amongst each other and I couldn't help think of all the germs and bacteria they were spreading on the all sushi!! What's the point of wearing a mask if it's in your chin not your face?? I hope I don't get Coronavirus from this!!! Not sanitary whatsoever! I stood in line for a good 15 minutes before an employee FINALLY acknowledged me and asked how can they help me. I told her my phone order and she had me pay/sign. I ordered TWO sushi rolls and when I came home they only provided me with 1 thing of ginger, 1 thing of wasabi, and 1 soy sauce. I was completely disappointed. I've been enjoying sushi as one of my all-time favorite ethnic foods for a long time. There are some places I've been to that are great, some that are terrible, and few that are excellent! Sushi On Fire, as a local neighborhood restaurant, is excellent! The atmosphere is great, the service at the sushi bar is friendly, and the food is outstanding! This review is specific to the Belmont Shore location. My wife and I have been repeatedly, and this place is consistently good! The food: five stars! I always start out with a plate of sushi. My favorites are the salmon sushi, sea bass, and blue fin when they have it. The sushi is served with generous cuts of fish. The first roll I HIGHLY recommend is the refreshing roll. Hands down the best roll I've ever had... sweet yet savory, spicy and citrusy...with a kick of flavor...excellent! I normally enjoy this one as my last for the evening! Our next two favorites are the Hercules roll and the sushi on fire roll! We have also enjoyed the white dragon roll (with seared white tuna), Halloween roll, 911, and the list goes on. For starters, the vegetable tempura is very good as well as their spicy edamame and miso soup. Two sensitivities I have is that the wait times for the food can be longer than average, and the prices are also higher than average, but they sure do deliver with the quality of the food...so it's worth the wait and price. Came back on a Saturday night and we won't be back. It was so loud we could barely hear each other... and we were sitting next to each other. The place was filled with drunk teenagers. It was sad to see a Japanese restaurant degrade into a sushi-flinging madhouse filled with rowdy animals. Service was frantic and unattentive. It was a terrible vibe. None of the workers seemed to be enjoying themselves. It felt like they just kind of gave up. For some reason, the fish tasted worse too. This is hands down the best sushi I have ever had. Every time my family comes to visit from Norcal they want to eat here. I'm always trying new sushi restaurants, but none can measure up to Sushi On Fire. If you're looking for something on the refreshing/sweet/lighter side, I strongly recommend the Halloween or Main Street Roll. Or even better try the HB Sun, it's amazing!!!!! If you want a roll that's warm and more filling, definitely try the White Roll. I could recommend rolls all day but in the end even if you close your eyes and take a jab at the menu with your finger you'd choose something delicious. They never disappoint here! Returned the 2 items and had 2 more rolls... gross. Didn't touch our food after a bit of each roll and the server still charged us for it , even though he knew we didn't like it or eat it. For what it is, it's not bad. Don't expect traditional authentic Japanese cuisine here. Everything on the menu is some play off of a California roll + toppings + thick sauce on top. That said, it's still pretty tasty. Food comes out fast. Service can be iffy and there can be a wait, especially on weekends. When I came here for dinner tonight, I had to literally YELL at my dinner companion across the table because it was that crazy loud. Not the most pleasant dining experience. All in all, though, this is probably the best 'sushi' you're going to get on 2nd street. It's better tasting than Sushi Saurus across the street (even though Sushi Saurus has a way better name). After wading through the hipster kids (nothing against hipster kids, they just make me feel old) my friend and I sat at the bar. It was pretty crowded on a Saturday night, but we got seated right away. Warren behind the counter asked for our order so we told him to make us whatever he wanted. We ended up with the "Warren Special"--it's not on the menu, but it should be. There was mango involved...and purple onion...and I think albacore...and I am salivating just thinking about it. We had a couple other dishes and some tuna sashimi. Overall, the fish was really fresh, the food was creative, the staff was great, and the prices were right on the money. Three of the items I ordered were not what I ordered, so it was a total let down when I came home from a long drive from LBC to the South Bay. It is a bit pricey, 70$ for four orders. Aye. I used to love this place. Porkchop rolls are always great. The freaking teryiyaki beef was burnt and there was about 1 ounce of beef! Total disappointment. All the other sushi rolls I ordered were okay, although I didn't intend to get them because what I wanted were sashimi and crispy tuna rice. I love the sushi and the service here. I'm super sensitive to sushi that isn't fresh (friends just call it high maintenance), but I have never felt like the sushi was subpar. The staff is so friendly and try their best to make sure everyone is having a great time and enjoying their meal. Sushi On Fire is my favorite sushi place. I loooove the Refreshing Roll, and their extensive menu has so many options that you could try something new every visit. Miso soup is complimentary for every guest, and they hook up the sake with a beer order. Unlike many sushi restaurants, they offer a kids' meal that is yummy, affordable, and comes with ice cream, so my 5 year old loves it here too. I live very close by on Naples, so Sushi on Fire is a definite go-to sushi place. I tried it for the first time on Tuesday, and it was pretty delicious. It was super busy because Tuesday is the local-discount night. We don't have ID/proof that we live nearby because we're from the Bay, but luckily my friend had his CSULB ID which worked just fine. We were brought water immediately and it was nice and refreshing with lemons in it. We were also given menus right away as well. We ended up ordered the Yellowtail Collar, the Crab/Scallop/Cucumber Salad, and two rolls (Hercules and Lobster Roll). The Lobster Roll came out first. It was a little plain, but with some wasabi and soy sauce it was fine. The rolls were large but there were only 6 which I don't think is a lot, especially for $10. Next came the Scallop Salad. This was 12.95, but it was fairly large and pretty darn delicious. I love Japanese Mayo! So good. Next came the Hercules Roll. I picked out all the jalapanos cause I'm afraid of "Spicy Butt" (Haha jk) but the roll was pretty spicy still. I really liked it and wolfed them all down! Lastly came the Yellowtail Collar. It was perfect. Crispy on the outside, soft and moist on the inside, with a delicious dipping sauce and another spicy one on the side. I loved the yellowtail so much!! I will definitely return again. Sushi on Fire has great ambiance, plenty of seating, and fast and polite service. There's also a beautiful waiter there who reminds me of Mario Lopez. Win. read more

Went here for the first time last week. All I can say is awesome!! The service was great. The sushi rolls ahhhh!!! Food was delicious. The one thing I had an issue with is the menu is super overwhelming. Way too many options! But at least there's something for everyone? Took us about 20 minutes to make a decision. Ended up with the yellowtail supreme, the sexy roll and the refreshing roll- all of which I would order again. They have a nice sake selection. Although I am def a huge fan of Sushi on Fire, the service has gone down! I haven't been for a few months so when my friend was visiting we decided to have her last night here dinner at Sushi on Fire, table of 7 (easy going group may I add) I don't know what was going on here this day, but damn it was a disaster! Okay first off, we sit down and the server walks away, leaves 1 menu on the table, that's it, just 1 for 7 people... 5 minutes pass and still no more menus, no water, nothing! Finally a guy walks up to give us more menus and asks if we want water and drinks so we order from him our drinks. 2 minutes later (which is now about 15 mins from when we first sat) the waitress walks over and asks "Can I get you some drinks" uh...NO the guy just took our drink orders, so she walks off again (instead of asking if we are ready to order Our drinks arrive and we are all ready to place our sushi orders only to notice we don't have a damn Sushi order sheet, so I reach over to the register where they are and grab one for our table. We write our entire order on the paper, incl things that are NOT sushi (we were done wasting time at this point) Finally the same guy (who I think is a dishwasher) comes to take our order sheet, reads everything off to make sure he got it all and leaves. I swear about 5 mins later the waitress comes back with some bowl of food and places it on the table, doesn't say anything and walks away... We realized no one ordered this, so no one touches it, we catch her as she's flying by to let her know it's not ours and she grabs it and puts it back on the counter, I guess for whoever it does belong to (SO gross, it sat on our table for like 5 mins and then she takes it back? I would not want to be the one who actually ordered that!) Our food is surely taking a while to make it to our table and I will say that it was a busy night (wed., April 24, 2013) and they were short staffed, but they could make it happen it's not a huge place! Finally food starts arriving at our table but WHY did the server hand over a hot bowl of Udon to someone to pass to the correct person instead of walking her "Server" ass over to the other person to place the bowl in front of her?! She did this with a few dishes, which was so odd, I've never had a server have the table pass food to the correct person! I've been a server, I've never done that!!! Our drinks were empty more than once and we had to flag someone down to get refills or additional rounds of drinks. The one thing about Sushi on Fire is the Sushi is damn good so for that reason I can over look these things. They need to have more servers and they need to train them on how to give excellent customer service, it can't only be the Sushi that works in this place! read more

Before hitting the beach for the day, I came here with a bestie for a yummy sushi lunch. Both waitresses were really sweet and they offered us warm sake and miso soup, on the house! We split the following: BSC Roll ($12): a California roll topped with baked scallops and mayo. The scallops were huge but they were pretty wet, and the mayo didn't stick to them so the roll fell apart as soon as you tried to pick up a piece. I think the scallops may have been underdone; the texture was a bit strange. Caterpillar Roll ($11): a barbecued eel roll topped with avocado. I love Caterpillar rolls and this one was no exception! The avocado was ripe and creamy and the eel sauce was the right complement. Deluxe Crunchy Roll ($11): A Cali roll with shrimp tempura deep fried and drizzled with eel sauce. Yummy! Fresh Roll ($12): this one has fresh slices of lemon and jalapeno! It was the best thing we ordered and it definitely tasted fresh! Overall, the rolls were a bit pricey, but we liked their selection of rolls and the restaurant's interior felt clean and modern. We will return! read more

Absolutely delicious sushi. Being a college student and an avid sushi fan is not a healthy combination. Thankfully, this place offers discounted sushi on tuesdays for a wonderful locals night which is very nice for CSULB and LBCC students alike. The sushi is well portioned. The rainbow roll and the sashimi have nice thick pieces of fish on them and the rice is seasoned perfectly. The tuna is lean and cleanly cut. The salmon is my favorite since it is very buttery and has a very healthy texture to the fish. This place is perfect because it has pleasant food and also displays the interesting nightlife on 2nd street. For me, I always take my friends from out of town here when they visit for special occasions. One of my complaints is, of course, the price tag. Honestly, this place is my go-to sushi restaurant near CSULB but I can visit once every other month if possible since its a little pricey for some of my favorite dishes. My final complaint (one I have read a lot of on Yelp) is that the service is slow. Whether your waiting for your meal or even for your table, you're going to give yourself a lot of time when visiting this place. They're always busy so the wait and the service may sometimes drive you mad but their staff remain dedicated and helpful. They also consistently try their best to keep up with the demand. All in all, delightful sushi with a busy atmosphere. I would definitely recommend you try this place out at least once. read more

The food is amazing - the fish is incredibly fresh, the rolls a step above the average creativity of a typical sushi bar, and the spicy tuna has a real kick! (Sidenote: why is spicy tuna never actually spicy??) And did I mention the free miso? Our order included: - Mr & Mrs Lee roll (A-): the aforementioned SPICY spicy tuna with a topping of tuna, cucumber and avocado. - Main Street Roll (A++++): a MUST-order... shrimp tempura & jalapeno topped with mango, tempura and eel sauce - Halloween Roll (B+, but only bc I don't love crab salad) I was surprised how packed the place was for a Thursday night... the service did suffer as a result.
