And I didn't try any of the sweet pastries so not sure. As for working from here, they've got wifi and plenty of tables and outlets. However the 2 times I've been recently it's been hot/stuffy in there, and there's a constant shrill tone or humming from their ovens or something that bothered my ears so I had to leave. that's just me though, other people were unbothered. However, I'm particularly sensitive to the bitterness of coffee and was disappointed that I could really only taste the coffee and not the lavender flavor, so I think this would be better with stronger lavender taste. Went here this morning to grab a couple of quick bites. Ordered the lemon bar, a peanut butter cookie, and a chocolate chip cookie. I will add that they were all out of their scones so I'm guessing I missed out on the go-to item. Anyway, what we did order was splendid and delicious. The lemon bar was fresh, the lemon was perfect - tart and not too sweet. The peanut butter cookie was just baked as it was still warm. Had a jelly center filling which was a nice touch. Haven't had the choco chip yet but the ones we had were probably some of the best baked that we've had. Service was good and there was plenty of foot traffic. Was really excited to come here based on the reviews. I ordered an asiago bagel with egg, cheese and avocado. It definitely looked good and I was very excited by the amount of avocado! However, the very first bite had no flavor. None. The next bite was all pepper. So basically, they put so much pepper on the egg, which rubbed off on the bagel and that's all I could taste. Sweet Bar Bakery has helped to contribute to the overall renaissance of the entire area with additional restaurants, coffee shops, clothing stores, meeting places that has helped turn the Uptown neighborhood into a prime destination. Much credit goes to owner Mani Niall who has worked his way up the bakery food chain, thanks to a number of successes with his bakery in Los Angeles and series of cookbooks that focused on the world of baking with natural and organic ingredients. With Sweet Bar Bakery he has created gathering places for amazing pastries, sandwiches and handcrafted coffee drinks. I have been to Sweet Bar Bakery once before after I was enjoying lunch with a friend nearby along Broadway and they were recommended by our server after we asked for a nice local coffee shop nearby, and I remembered that last experience being so wonderful that I had to make another appearance at Sweet Bar Bakery one day. On a recent warm weekday afternoon, a friend and I decided that today was the day! The real reason was we were having lunch along the Oakland waterfront, and with a little libations in our bodies we decided that we needed a little pick me up to get us through the day, and I suggested driving to Sweet Bar Bakery to enjoy their coffee drinks, plus I was in the mood for a cookie to take home. Although the day we went was a holiday and we were hoping for parking nearby, unfortunately we didn't get it on this day as we had to drive around for blocks on end just to get a space. Once we did find a space, it was a bit of a hike to get to Sweet Bay Bakery's entrance, and luckily by the time we arrived they were still open, despite it being later in the afternoon. Once inside, you can instantly tell that Sweet Bar Bakery has a large baking facility behind their front counter, which is no doubt being used for their daily customers but for large catering orders. There weren't too many people sitting inside by the time we came so we made a beeline for their counter area to check out the baked goods inside their glass cases and their drink menu. By the time we arrived, there were a lot of cupcakes, muffins and cookies left, and their drink menu was broken up into four sections: Espresso Bar, Brewed Coffee, Other Drinks, and Kombucha on Tap. While my friend decided to order a Caramel Latte, I opted to order a Caramel Mocha espresso, while for my cookie I ordered their Chocolate Walnut Chunk cookie, which came as a recommendation from our cashier as she said it was a top seller at Sweet Bar Bakery. All told, my final bill was a bit under 8 dollars before tip, which wasn't too bad considering the cost of things nowadays. It didn't take too long for our drinks to be handcrafted by our barista and once we were presented with them I immediately placed a coffee lid on top of my cup, and it turns out, we didn't need it as my coffee was piping hot with every sip. My cookie was a strong choice, it necessarily wasn't the chewiest one I have ever had, but had me intrigued enough to come back for more. My friend and I sat down at a table sitting against a window along 24th Street as we took in Sweet Bar Bakery's new neighbor the Kissel Uptown Oakland Hotel which will have a new restaurant on the ground level as well. Which just goes to show the kind of revival of the uptown neighborhood that Sweet Bar Bakery has led since opening almost ten years ago. With amazing sounding sandwiches for breakfast and lunch served on both bagels and ciabatta rolls sold at decent price points, many more return visits to Sweet Bar Bakery are in order for myself and many more locals. Stopped by early on a Friday for a coffee and breakfast muffin. The line moves quickly and the staff is busy completing orders but still attentive to you. I ordered the Maple Cardamon latte and a blueberry crumble muffin. The waiter said the maple cardamon latte was overly sweet but I think it's a personal taste preference because it's not overly sweet and it's not too bitter either, it's a nice balance especially with the warm sweetness of the blueberry crumble muffin. Nice open space in here, I could see myself finding a spot and reading a book or doing some work sometime. The lady was very friendly and greeted me when I walked in. I immediately made my way to the dessert display case and checked out their items. It was a mix of little desserts that could be shared and individual slices of items. I went for the cupcakes, there were about a half dozen flavors to choose from. This is definitely more of the classy cafe style where there's no extra color or anything extravagant for decoration. I chose several cupcakes which were their Pumpkin Ginger, Carrot, and their Chocolate. There seemed to be a second Chocolate that has a raspberry on top but she told me there was no difference except that garnish. The box it came in was small and cute with their logo stamped on it but it wouldn't stay closed with the tape she put on it. Unfortunately all of the cakes were a big let down but all of the frostings were tasty! The cake of the carrot supposedly had coconut but I tasted something else that was way too strong and it wasn't your typical carrot cake. The chocolate cupcake seemed like it could be the texture of a devils food cake but it lacked in moisture and flavor. The pumpkin ginger has ok flavor in the cake but it was also pretty darn dry. The ginger was pretty faint aside from the candied ginger garnish. The frosting has a funny texture, it was almost gummy like because it had a sinilar texture to elmers glue. Cream cheese frosting is usually stickier than buttercream but this was a lot thicker as if caramel or taffy was mixed in. I didn't mind the flavor but I definitely noticed the difference in consistency. The friendly lady and open space will bring me back to try something savory from this joint but unfortunately I'll pass on any more cupcakes. read more

I think the business changed hands since I was last here pre-COVID. Came by on a Saturday morning looking forward to some yummy treats but it seems the glory days of this place are over. The display cases were more than half empty. The variety that used to be available is no longer. The space seemed kind of grimy and not very inviting. The garbage can was overflowing to the point where I had nowhere to dispose of my trash. Seems like there is not much attention to customer service. There was no milk or cream out for coffee and I had to ask for a new bottle of Tabasco because the one available was empty and the few drops left looked really oxidized. I tried to order the Vietnamese coffee that they were advertising but somehow they had run out but didn't take the sign at the register down. There weren't any interesting options so I ended up ordering a bagel breakfast sandwich. The bagel was very bready and the "scrambled" egg seemed microwaved. I ended up tossing most of the egg it was so hard to eat. I was incredibly disappointed that this was one of the few dine in experiences I had in the last two years. read more

I have been to Sweet Bar in the past for the random cupcake or cookie but yesterday I was drawn to it by the new "housemade bagels" sign outside. I hadn't eaten breakfast yet and that sign just made my tummy growl. Stepped inside the spacious bakery and overheard a few people in front of me order what I had planned to - simply an everything bagel with cream cheese. Price was just $3.28 with tax. Either they had just fallen prey to the marketing outside or the bagels here are amazing. One bite in and I'd say it was the latter. Perfectly toasted, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. "Everything" seasoning was not overwhelming and the cream cheese amount was just right. I had gotten it to go and planned to eat it at work. Let's just say it only lasted a few blocks. One of the best croissants bakery in the Bay Area! The croissants here are freshly made in the house. They are so crispy and flaky on the outside and full of buttery deliciousness. I always go for the chocolate croissant and they could warm it up in the oven if you asked. I like that the chocolate filling is not overly sweet and the amount is just enough. My mom loves their ham & gruyere croissant which they cut the plain croissant in half and then put a slice of cheese and ham in it before putting it into the oven to heat it up. The croissant comes out very crispy and the cheese melts nicely. I also had their blueberry ginger scone and granola before and they are just as good.
