Omg I really love tapioca express and I've only been to the convoy location. This was our first time at the la jolla location and man.... From the food to the boba everything was just horrible and tasteless here. The boba had no taste and the flavors were so off. I've been coming here randomly since I moved back to San Diego about 3 years ago. Today I popped in after I got my nails done. I've asked if they have Lavender Milk Tea before and I got a no, but today I asked because I saw it on the Manager's Special, but for Snow bubble. I asked if they had it in Milk Tea and the kid at the cash register said yea to which I replied well it's not listed. He's was like yea it's a secret. Couple of years ago, my buddy and I were in the middle of a heated PS3 game and starving... One of our roommates was on his way to Tapioca which we've never been to before, but he seemed like he was in love with the place so we asked him to get us whatever he got for himself. He came back with 3 Tap Crispy Chicken meals and 3 Thai teas. To this day I still get the same thing and I love it!! We still live in UTC, we know pretty much every place that exist within our vicinity, and we visit Tap Express on a regular basis. I especially like the fact that they're open late. Only good thing about this spot is because its cheap other then that the quality of the drinks and food isn't good. The drink tastes like they put too much powder and the boba isn't good at all. Last time I went I got a Thai tea and spicy chicken combo, the whole spot was smokey I know the chef burnt some of the chicken or something in the kitchen. So, last sunday my wife and I were returning home when she told me she felt like having something cold. She asked me where was the place we had the smoothies with boba and I told her in North Park. Since we live in the UTC area we wanted something close. I got on my phone and looked on yelp. Low and behold we found Tapioca Express. When we got there the ambiance was really nice, and the staff was friendly. We got our smoothies and we felt like we were in hevan. Rich flavors, good consistancy... Yum. Everytime I pop in here it's packed (with UCSD students I presume) on their laptops. I believe the free Wi-Fi draws people in. Fine by me, but I could never study with the funky food smell in there. Anyway, the drinks are good. I'm a big fan of their fresh slushies. (Peach and Watermelon are my favorite.) I am NOT a fan, however, of the cashier handling my money with bare hands and then handling the "fresh" fruit they put in my drink. Good dedicated boba tea in UTC. Tucked away in the regents shopping center, probably only known to the residents nearby, this is a convenient Tapioca Express location to visit. My favorite drink is the milk tea, dark, smokey, caramel tea, is made well and gives a boost of caffeine needed to finish the day. Friendly staff, always crowded during the day and I bring guests here all the time. As far as the food, most on the menu is quick service and tastes good. The fried chicken snack bag is made in a jiffy. read more

I honestly don't like the boba here. It's a popular place but I think there are so many other boba places that top this one. Pho La Jolla actually sells a couple flavors of boba and Thai tea and i think it's better than tapex. The boba doesn't taste fresh here. And the tea is just eh.. Watered down. read more

Was in a hurry to buy a drink for a friend. Got back to find that they left out the pudding in my drink order. I didn't pay $4 for plain milk green tea. And can you say overpriced? That's almost the price of a Starbucks frap! Half the time their green tea is over steeped and terribly bitter. The people who work here look annoyed when there are customers because you're interrupting their game. They just play games or watch TV when there are no customers. They need to learn some basic customer service. I find the people at the campus location nicer to deal with. read more

My favorite thing to get at Tapex is the extra spicy crispy chicken with basil and a blueberry snowbubble with boba or a Thai tea. You can ask for extra basil for something like 50 cents more. They have the best boba I've ever tried. It is never soggy and always perfect. I love being able to pick what color boba straw I want for my drink. You can do an option of mini boba but I prefer the regular one. They also have a pretty good spring roll with peanut sauce. Every time I have gone there the service is always friendly and fast. There is a lot of college students with their laptops so it seems to be a good place to do homework and get some grub. By the left of the register they have lots of sauces and some hot chili powder you can use if your food isn't spicy enough or want to take some sauces to-go. Tapex is a trendy place to come eat at and has a lot of good options on the menu to choose from. read more

went back again, this place is really yummy. the service is super awesome, the workers are fast and friendly, and the drinks i've gotten lately have been pretty good. i like the hong kong milk tea, mocha snowbubble and watermelon strawberry slush. yup, i've expanded and tried more drinks..ad well as food. i like pot stickers and corn patty things, they're my favorite items to get there now :) i recommend this place for a delicious and quick snack + drink. forget starbucks and their dinky pastries....this place is better AND they have free internet! woohoo! read more

I am usually not a fan of Tapioca Express. However, Anthony at this Tapioca Express makes simply the best snow bubble I've ever had the pleasure of tasting. The Tapioca Express on Regents is my favorite place to study when I am here in San Diego, which is pretty much every weekend. The staff is very very nice and accommodating and the service is always great. I come here because for the price of a boba or two, and sometimes a meal, the staff lets me stay here all day to write my dissertation. My only complaints are that this place 1) needs more outlets for computers, 2) needs better lighting, 3) needs tables that are even and don't move, and 4) should open earlier in the morning so I can get some morning writing done. Also, I love the wifi here! It is free and allows me to get a lot of research done. And the parking is plentiful and most important, FREE. All in all, this is a great place, and as I said, I come here almost every weekend. I highly recommend this place. I rate it 5 stars.... read more

The drinks are pretty standard, nothing too special. I tried the milk tea because they were out of Thai tea and it was like any other milk tea I have had. The cashier however was VERY rude! She seemed like she didn't want to be here, when I asked her about the difference between the two drinks she replies with "well they are two different things". She definitely didn't make a good first impression and I will not be back because I don't want to be treated like that by the cashier. I personally like the Tap Ex on Convoy much better. Their drinks just taste better and even though it's not super clean, it seems cleaner to me there. When I walked in the floor was really sticky. This place is definitely much smaller than the one on Convoy but overall it was just okay. Service is alright as well. read more

The one off of convoy is soooo much better! I've had their drinks and they're super sweet so I always ask to have it half sweetened. If you ever watch then make it, it's literally just powdered "milk tea" mix and water. Kind of disappointing once you know how they make it. My review today is based on their food. I've never had a problem with their crispy chicken but the other day I ordered the crispy chicken meal and it was disgusting. The rice tasted rancid. It tasted as if it's been in the rice cooker for a long time and it tasted so rotten. The vegetables were over cooked with some type of weird sauce that I've never seen before. The chicken was okay but it was so hard to get over that disgusting rice. I will never order food from here again. read more

They seem to have their drinks down, but if their other food items are anything like their calamari, I would suggest skipping out. My cousin and I ordered the calamari and it was the least pleasant calamari eating experience I've ever endured. If it was not for the ranch and sweet and sour sauce masking the chewy, stale, overly breaded texture combined with my rumbling tummy, I might have just tossed it out and accepted the loss. The calamari was sooo chewy it almost gave me lock jaw. I don't come to this location very often at all, so I'm not sure if this is a consistent issue or may have just been a one time boo boo. Either way, it was enough to discourage me from ordering any food items in the future. As for my hot lavender milk tea, I was quite pleased up until my last few sips. I ended up with a few chunks of dry lavender powder on my tongue..not so pleasant. Anyways, I would def recommend the Convoy location, unless you're close to this area and quenching for a quick boba fix. read more

I gave 3 stars cuz they were cool and last night let me buy a drink at closing time however my drink which was a mango snow bubble was terrible. I have had this drink before and it was very good in the past and so I don't understand why it was so different and flavorless. I came in this morning... I told him about my experience with the less then quality drink n offered to bring it since it's still in the freezer at home across the street. It woulda been nice to have a discount of half off or anything but I was told nothing could be done about it, they said no to giving me a managers email or # as well. I'm disappointed I really like this place and I would think they would want to keep me as a customer and maybe remake my drink with more flavor since the drink last nighttasted more like card board and wasn't made anything like it has been in the past.
