Bae and I came here after a hike because I was starving, and this is a local place I've always eaten at while growing up around here. It's a really comforting place to eat. We came at the end of the lunch rush around 1 PM and got seated immediately. The service is ok, but they can speak both Mandarin and English. I ordered the Grilled Chicken Steak with mushroom sauce and pasta with a Milk Tea. They give you a complimentary soup that is a somewhat sweet tomato soup. I like to load it with pepper. The Grilled Chicken Steak is one of my favorite things here. I don't know how they do it, but it's so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside! The mushroom sauce is awesome and they give you a healthy amount of vegetables. Lastly, the pasta is nice and sweet (think Asian-Western pasta). You can get it with rice if the pasta sounds too weird for you. The Milk Tea is authentic. You can see the tea mixing with the milk as they serve it to you. It's just not as sweet as local boba shops and it's a little bitter if you're into that. I usually get the Honey Lemon Tea and would recommend it since it's a refreshing classic. Really enjoy this spot for some comforting Cantonese cafe food. Their menu basically covers everything you'll recognize in a typical 626 Hong Kong style cafe. I've only had takeout during covid, but the food is always packaged nicely and still hot by the time I get home. I used to come to this location a lot when I was younger, I never really thought it was bad or good. I just came back today to have lunch here after many years of not coming by. If you have been here before, it was pretty run down and felt a little bit dirty (at least what I remembered). We were greeted by a waitress who let us choose where we wanted to sit and brought us the menu. They had 3 different menus: Lunch special, Chefs special, and their normal menu. The owner was there and spoke with us a little bit and asked us to try out the 'lemon ice tea'. The lemon ice tea is a bit different than what you are used to in normal cafes. It had a little bit of a honey taste to it (make sure you mix it before drinking it). So we ordered three different items: Braised Short Ribs, Stir Fried Pork Belly With Chinese Broccoli, & Hainan Chicken Rice. Out of the three, Braised Short Ribs was the best (and recommended by waitress). The meat was soft and tender, very easy to cut. The sauce was not too salty or strong, so it made it pretty flavorful. Hainan Chicken Rice was pretty average, nothing bad but also nothing that stands out so much. What was interesting was the Stir Fried Pork Belly with Chinese Broccoli. I was expecting what a normal pork belly dish would usually look like but it was totally different that expected. There was def more Chinese broccoli than pork belly. They also included some taiwanese sausage, probably to help the meat portion of it. Pork belly was def harder than expected and we weren't that a big of fan of that. We visited Hong Kong every summer and lived there for 2 years, when I moved to the US I always try to find authentic Hong Kong Style cooking. We tried Tasty Choice and I found what I was looking for. I ordered the Curry Fishballs and it brought be back to Tsim Shat Sui, it tastes exactly how they make it in Hong Kong. I ordered Steak Cubes with Pepper Sauce for my entree and it was on point, it just had the right amount of spice and I definitely recommend it. Our server was very friendly and they gave us the some hot corn soup while waiting for our entrees. The ambiance is what you would expect from an Asian Cafe but we liked that they have an open patio, there was also a live band when we came and we stayed after we ate to enjoy the music. We are trying to stay on a budget this month and we rarely eat out, we are happy that we chose to eat here for dinner because it was pretty affordable. Parking was also not an issue and to say that San Gabriel is sort of a miracle. We are definitely coming back and try their baked pasta, I am confident that this will be our go to for my Cantonese food cravings. read more

My dad and I used to come here all the time a couple years ago before we stopped because prices were too expensive. He always ordered one dish and since he missed it so much with the knowledge that everything is expensive now, he wanted to go back. That one dish is Fish Filet with Tofu and Garlic (in a brown sauce). It used to be made with halibut, back when it was still affordable for regular folk. They fried up the halibut gently, bone-in and all and it had a nice "golden" flavor with that nice chewy and soft textured meat. Anyway, now it's just sole filet prepared just the same way (minus the bone, of course). Garlic is still fried to a deep dark color so it really infuses in the oil and sauce. Tofu is still silken inside with that nice braised texture you get after frying something. Got some mushrooms in there too, yum! It was a bit salty though. Another favorite back then was the Beef Shortribs with Eggplant Clay Pot. Wasn't feeling the ribs but was feeling up to more fish! YAY! Fish is prepared the same way as above, but with a basil sauce. Eggplant is hella oily, and they didn't cook it long enough for those huge chunks they gave us. Not as good as I remember but eh. They had a cream of tomato soup with some veggies that was quite good-- very HK style cafe flavor. Apparently, they only serve jello at the end upon request (never liked it anyway so don't care). Price is not bad for it is... we got SO much rice with our dishes, it wasn't even funny. My wife and I always drove by this place and wanted to try it out... well this is that day. The parking lot is a shared lot with the building across from it but we had no issues whatsoever finding a spot. We arrived for dinner and were greeted by a friendly waitress, who then showed us to our table. The place was pretty packed and there also seemed to be a live band playing outside on the patio. The menu had a lot of offerings and I decided on the Korean Short Ribs plate while my wife and I shared some Curry Fish Balls. The waitress recommended the Lemon Iced Tea and I quickly jumped on that. The food then arrived in good time and I totally was digging the Short Ribs. It even had a side of veggies and sliced potatoes. After we ate, my wife and I decided to hang out by the patio to listen to the music outside. Apparently, the band were young international students from Hong Kong that were attending school in LA. Overall my wife and I had a great time here. Good food and good service. Just had the worst to go experience with Tasty choice through the Chinese Togo app Fantuan. We ordered beef stew rice and it was spoiled! I ordered the lemon iced tea based on the Yelp recommendations, but don't agree with their comments. It is pretty good but not to the level of being one of the best. 3 stars for the tea. Creamy Baked Sole Fillet with Spinach and Bacon bits was really good. Personally, I had to scrape aside some of the cream because they give you too much, but it kept the fish moist yet making the top crust crispy. I could have done without the bacon bits as it made it too salty for me. In the end, I had left some bacon bits and cream.... otherwise, I might have licked the plate. =) Hainan chicken was very good. I really liked their ginger sauce. This dish rivals Savoy! Enough said!! We also ordered a side of vegetables and thought, "WOW!" It was a huge portion of vegetables and it was very, very good. They were cooked just enough not to be soggy and seasoned very lightly. When we got the check, I found out we had ordered a full dish of mixed vegetables.... LOL!! The Ribeye Fried Rice in Sizzling Platter was great! I got hooked to this fried rice from Green Island in Rowland Heights, but I think this place might be better! The service was excellent. If I'm in the mood for tons of lemon iced tea and something to eat on the side, Tasty Choice is where I come. I've only been for lunch and each time, I order something like their filet mignon with tomato rice, eat part of it and take home the rest, and spend my time enjoying multiple refills of their lemon iced tea. I don't know why, but I really like their lemon iced tea. You can also order it light on sugar -- just let them know! They do have a menu with lunch specials that include a drink (such as the lemon iced tea I keep talking about, coffee, and some other choices). The lunch special is expansive, but in a way limited (my filet mignon with tomato rice is not on there). I did enjoy the baked pasta with minced beef off of that menu and got the lemon iced tea included. Yay! And plus, each order comes with soup. Parking should be no issue here. There's a pretty large parking lot that's shared with Embassy Billiards Club. If it's super full, there is street parking. The service is reasonable and their lunch specials provide a great variety of choices that include Hainan Chicken. The lunch plate for only $9.00 comes with almost 1/2 plump and tasty chicken, fragrant rice, pickled salad and a half boiled egg. They provide both the popular ginger and green onion sauce and sweet and sour sauce. Overall a great value for decent Hainan Chicken. The food here is pretty good but nothing to rave about. I wouldn't go out of my way to come here or recommend it to friends or anything but if my family suggests eating here I don't mind. I like to get their baked cheesy pasta dishes and my parents tend to go for the lunch specials/entrees. Their milk tea and lemon iced tea are both tasty and refreshing, and the complimentary soup they give you at the beginning is consistently delicious (the soup changes every time I come). I came here only for the Hainan Chicken Rice as I have been to Savoy Kitchen and Dong Nguyen for the same item but was not overly impressed and eating the one here I definitely feel this is better than Savoy(dry) and Dong Nguyen (cold/regular temperature served). It's obviously not the best I ever had but beggars can't be choosers with such limited options in the LA area. Their pricing one upped Savoy Kitchen. Savoy charges extra for dark meat to target the eaters that prefer dark meat but Tasty Choice charges extra for either white or dark meat. If you want to just pay the regular price, you simply just order it as is and not commenting on the kind of meat you want for your Chicken. They served complimentary Russian vegetable soup which I'm not sure if it was just that day since they did not want to honor their lunch special because December 26 (on a weekday) apparently is considered a "holiday" either though it's NOT! Aside from that minor annoyance, the Hainan Chicken Rice was great and I would come back here again for it. It was a little odd though to have the rice fully brown/ "seasoned rice". Usually accustomed to just white/flavored chicken rice. One other minor annoyance was that either though I ordered dark meat specifically, they had the decency to sneak into my meal one piece of white meat. So not only did I pay extra for dark meat, I also got shoved a white meat. Lesson learned is to just order regular Hainan Chicken rice to avoid this from happening again and I will also end up paying less. My friend ordered the regular and it seemed they got more meat so I think just going forward makes sense to not choose specific cut (dark or white) of Chicken and pay a premium. read more

PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS RESTAURANT. I have reported their abusive employment practices and mistreatment of the workers and waiters here to the consumer bureau. I ate here a few weeks before the the Covid shutdown and the food was mediocre. But what was truly appalling was how the restaurant manager or owner was treating some of the waiters and the intense verbal abuse that was going on. For example, I saw a waitress reprimanded for not selling enough of the special menu item even though she had just arrived at work and was not told about promoting any specific dish. Later, I saw another waiter appalled and genuinely confused about why he was being yelled at by the same guy. These did not seem like one off events, but rather a boss who has some serious anger management and self-esteem issues and is well practiced in using abusive tactics to run the restaurant -- belittling and bullying employees. It's not worth it. There are tons of better restaurants that serve the same and better food in this area. Do better and do not support a restaurant that abuses its workers. read more

Service is decent. Food is good. Hadn't had Hong Kong style wonton noodle soup in a long time, and their wontons are done right, giving you lots of flavor when you bite into one. Nice balance of ground pork to shrimp ratio, and you can really taste the shrimp. Noodles are nicely on the chewier side, and the broth was spot on -- very flavorful without being too salty, and definitely did not have MSG in it as I did not experience an side effects of MSG. My order was actually beef brisket noodle soup with wontons added (3 for $2). I had a taste of the seafood curry, which is good, with a good amount of seafood (squid, shrimp, bay scallops) in it. I also tasted the herring roe seafood fried rice, which was very tasty. The saltiness of the roe enhanced the flavor of the fried rice as well as providing some textural contrasts to the dish. Accessibility: this place has its own parking area, so it is very easy to park and walk-in. Ambiance: 3/5 this is your regular next door chinese place. Not very tidy and a little disorganized, but then again you go here just for the food. When I came there was literally no one here, probably because it was a weekday and late and night. They serve your typical entrees that are found at most cafes. I have had the grilled chicken steak at other cafes before so I had a measuring stick going in with this order. When it came, I was literally surprised at how huge it was. The order came with your usual rice, veggies, and grilled chicken steak with your choice of sauce. It was delicious and I could tell that the portion was bigger because my stomach was so so full compared to the other times I have had it. The baked pasta was also surprisingly good. Prices were slightly higher than other cafes that I have been to (like a dollar more) but the food was well presented and yummy. Their food menu was not as extensive as other cafes I have been to but they have the main bulk of things that people will find enticing.
