I would say its Sampan porridge is one of the best in San Gabriel area so far. They offer breakfast from Monday to Sunday and end at 11am. One day I ordered Sampan porridge after 11am. It took very long time to prepare it. The quality of the porridge was not as good as its breakfast porridge. My Sampan porridge was diluted. Today's my fried noodle of the breakfast was way too little. We also ordered steak for breakfast. The steak was good. Oh mannnn this might be my new favorite Hong Kong style cafe! I ordered delivery again for lunch (still have to go in person!!) and it was amazing just like last time. The beef curry stew is the best I've had in my life! I really wish I took better pictures before I started eating it lol! It comes in a large soup container at the perfect hot temperature! Huge chunks of beef, super melt-in-your mouth tendon, and creamy curry base that just has an amazing flavor! The potato chunks inside seem to have been fried first and then put in the stew, so they have a nice texture on the outside and then are super creamy on the inside! The most delicious stew I've ever had and super hearty and filling! The Hainanese chicken rice is delicious as usual (hopefully my picture this time shows how much chicken there actually is - the delivery bowls here are larger than at most places, there's about half a chicken in the bowl), and the flavors of the side mustard greens and salted egg really complement the chicken broth rice really well! I really can't state how much I love this place! I rarely do repeat reviews, but they sure do deserve them! Everything had a great portion size, amazing quality, and was packaged so nicely and delivered in a timely manner! Lastly, another huge bonus for this restaurant is that they are allergy-friendly! A for service. C for execution. Me and my girl love coming here because they stay open late and the employees are always kind. But every time we ask for more protein than vegetables it gets frustrating when we still don't get it. We been here maybe like 10 times and after the first 4 we had to start asking for them to please not give more vegetables on a "Chicken dish" than chicken but every time we are let down. If I could give 6 stars, I would. Excellent service, delicious food, extremely clean and Covid conscious. I am a vegetarian, and the chef was extremely amenable to my questions and needs. He altered three dishes to be completely vegetarian friendly, and I was more than impressed. The restaurant staff is so friendly and kind. The outdoor patio is open and there is plenty of room. I was happy to see they are taking care of staff by using paper plates and recyclable materials to serve the food, so it can just be disposed of right away. So important, I think right now when the health of the workers is vital. I will absolutely be returning. My dad and I love this place. I used to come here a lot way before the pandemic, came here once after they changed the management. I didn't like it much but my husband and I decided to give it another try. We are surprised it gets much better than before. The baked pork chop rice in tomato sauce was very authentic and the portion can fill up two adults. Both of my sons like it a lot. We also got the British-style steak combination. They added a beacon to it which is very special. They used to have a house-special chicken leg and it was their signature. It's sad they took it off the menu. Other than that, I'm glad that this place got better and hope it stays consistent. I would recommend this place. read more

One of the best Cantonese food restaurants in San Gabriel Valley. I just love everything they make here. The foods are absolutely authentic Hong Kong style cuisine. The basic dishes like chow fen, fried rice and congees are right on in flavor and authenticity. The Curry beef brisket is my favorite dish here. The beefs are tender and flavorful. The taste of the curry is just out of this world. I have not had any other restaurants in LA produce quite the same taste. I can eat two bowls of rice with the curry. Another fantastic dish is the Hainan Chicken rice. This restaurant has done it the right way. The chicken meat is very smooth yet tender. Eating with the garlic rice, the Hainan chicken definitely increases your appetite. This reminds me of the times when I was in Singapore where Hainan chicken rice is a daily table. i guess one of the chefs leaving really affected the quality of this place its the 2nd time in a row i ordered a baked tomato sauce item and it's been of poor quality the first time i got baked chicken steak rice. it's an actual chicken steak sliced up, so you get the bed of egg fried rice, the chicken steak with somewhat crispy skin and then they top it with their tomato sauce and cheese. well this time i got it and the chicken steak was skin down touching the rice, instead of up covered in sauce n cheese then baked. it was soggy and really took away from the texture 2nd time, ordered baked pork chop rice for lunch. the sauce did not taste the same as my last visit months ago, the celery is undercooked and almost crunchy, the egg fried rice is soggy n has lots of clumps of white rice, no wok hei at all. the pork chops are breaded but soggy even tho i started eating it minutes after picking it up the only redeeming thing from my last 2 visits are that the 2nd time, the milk tea was top notch. the first time it was kind of bland with the noticeable drop in quality, i won't be back as much. i hope they can do better. read more

Tasty Choice is a great spot for Hong Kong style café food. They open at 8 am for breakfast and close late at 2 am (except for Monday), so this is the perfect spot for a late night meal. I especially love their Chinese borscht soup, baked pork chop in tomato sauce with spaghetti, and beef stew curry. Their prices are slightly higher than what I'd like but still well within reasonable range compared to other HK café. The restaurant has enough seating (plus outdoor seating) and accommodates large parties, but it does get packed sometimes even late in the evening. I'm from the 626, and my family is primarily Cantonese--HK style cafes made up 90% of my diet growing up. Just so you have an idea of my standards. This is a spot that I've never been to before, in all my years living in the SGV. It's a tad far from Alhambra/MPK, and there's a surplus of HK cuisine there. There's a couple of really, really good signature items, and to me, that's what gives a HK cafe its merit. It's not going to be its glowing service (unless you know half the restauratuers in the area, like my dad), or its cleanliness. Or, frankly, the clean eating. It's going to be oily, and wok-fried, and savory, even MSG-y. But their big ticket items are so homey, so flavorful, and so well-done, that it becomes a memorable HK cafe. WeChat Cafe has its German pork knuckle, Baccali has its portion sizes. Tasty Choice has: - Eel on curry fried rice. Dude. That dish is stunning, rich, and still so comforting. A must-try. - XO Seafood Stir Fried Rice Noodles (also available in udon). XO-anything is a favorite of mine, but this spot manages to use the sauce in a less oily manner, while retaining all the flavor. - And, super good... yin yang? Several years pre pandemic, we travelled to LA and happened onto Tasty Choice by doing a quick Yelp check. We were very pleased with the food and the service. So during this last visit, it was a given that we would return. We went late on a weekday night and the place was fairly quiet but got a good table away tucked in the corner. Most of the favorite dishes were still on the menu but we orders some new selections. All of the dishes were very flavorful, ample size portions and service was very good. I was even offered a refill of iced lemon tea which is very much unheard of in other HK style eateries. They have clean restrooms and ample free parking outside in their lot. read more

As soon as we walked in we were greeted by the charismatic servers and the restaurant was busy at 10pm. We ordered dishes recommended by our server Jordan. I ordered the braised beef & tendon in curry sauce. My husband ordered the eel fried rice. And my friend ordered, the black pepper ribeye steak and the crispy noodles & beef in gravy sauce! Was craving Hainanese chicken but wanted to avoid the line at Savoy so decided to check this place out. It's kind of like a local mom and pops shop and the interior is a bit dated. The Hainanese chicken was actually not bad, we also wanted to try the beef short rib. That brings our total to $30. The waitress told us that they were doing a promotion if we reach $30, we can add $1 and get a steak, why not? We decided if we have any leftover we will just bring it home which is what we did because there was a lot of food. The beef short rib was really tender, but the $1 steak was a bit rough. I told her I cant do dark meat(doctors orders). She said she will talk to the cook. I looked at her again and td her I can't do dark meat. She says ok and walks away. They bring the food to the table and I received 80% dark meat. I told them I can't do dark meat. They left the food and walked away. There was blood all over my plate. The chicken inside the soup was also raw. Gross. I didn't eat anything. They came back to pick up plates. I didnt touch any of it. They said "you dont like?". I said look at the plate. What do you see wrong. They left the check. I paid and left. I remember years ago when I used to go there when it was owned by the der lady and man 10 years ago. Quality of food was so much better. One of My worst dinning experiences in my life! They don't even deserve a star First of all, they served frozen Hainan chicken rice and Second, I found a hair between chicken. The sever claimed that there was no hair when she took it out from freezer and refused to do anything even an apology ( she could have apologized and removed the hair in the kitchen ) so I ordered another dish instead. Finally, I paid for everything even tipped her $2 ( I had a feeling if don't tip her at all, she would come at me) And I was right. She dared to come at me complaining about the tip. In the last year or so Tasty Choice came under new management and drastically changed their style and menu offerings from the previous owners. I very much enjoy the new direction which seems more vibrant and has a bit of homecooking-like authenticity to it. Some of the dishes we enjoy when visiting include their Hong Kong style imitation shark fin soup. The imitation shark fin is made using a vegetable based stand in and is 100% shark free. It used to be a very inexpensive street food staple for the common working people and it has remained in the cultural memory of many HKers. They also offer a variety of HK style baked dishes on their menu. I'm personally a fan of the baked steak in gravy on rice and the baked pork chop and taro on rice. Taro is a less common ingredient seen on the menu and most HK Cafe style places will have the standard tomato sauce pork chop baked rice, cream sauce seafood on rice etc so it is nice to see some unique versions available here. Another unique item I have not encountered elsewhere is a fried rice with minced beef and bits of crunchy fried Chinese cruller/doughnut, this results a very interesting texture which I think works well. You'll also find on the menu simple dishes such as congee (rice porridge). The sampan congee here is very good, with fresh fried peanuts and very well prepared pig intestines. Cleaned thoroughly and with almost no pungentness and a nice snap to them. You'll also find more family style dishes such as the fried tofu and seafood stir fry. The tofu is more yellow in color due to egg yolk being used in production and are very soft and delicate, they are fried to a crispy outer skin making them like tofu pouches and then stir fried with a mix of fresh seafood. It is a light yet flavorful dish we enjoy very much with rice. Like many HK cafes the menu is extensive so there's something for everyone but our experiences here at Tasty Choice definitely left us with a more home styled feel than more commercialized chain HK cafes with some unique dishes. read more

It was less greasy than the other places that I've been to. The pork chop, fried rice, and the sauce was very yum! Unbelievable. I wish I could choose no stars. I called to order to go. I asked the lady nicely on the phone in Cantonese "which dish did you prefer? 'Fish with mustard green' or 'fish with ginger onion'?" She replied, "it's personal reference. People order both." Okay, I guess it's my fault that I asked for her opinions since I thought she would recommend her personal reference to a customer. So I chose " fish with mustard green." And then she said, "we don't have fish with mustard green." I was confused because I saw it on the menu on Yelp. But she kept saying you ordered the wrong dish and they did not have the dish. So I decided to switch to "fish with ginger onion" because I did not want to argue. She replied, "we don't have that dish, neither. Are you calling the right place? This is Tasty Choice!" Okay, I'm pretty sure I was calling the right place because this was your number on Yelp and the menu I was looking at had your logo on it. So I said, "yes, I'm looking at your menu on Yelp right now." She got annoyed and asked, "Are you looking at the old menu? We've changed our menu already." Wow, how was I supposed to know which one was the new menu and which one was the old menu when you did not update on Yelp? When I asked her that, she simply replied "okay" and put me on hold, without telling me any reason. This is some customer service under the new management I guess. Blaming customers for ordering wrong dishes while they did not update the menu on Yelp. And when they don't feel like dealing with you, they just put you on hold. When a restaurant has this kind of customer service, doesn't matter if the food is good or bad. A rude attitude will drive customers away. read more

Haven't been here for awhile but was pleasantly surprised by our latest visit. We ordered the curry minced beef with rice, pork knuckle soup noodle, crispy chicken legs and the nice waitress asked us if we wanted a steak for an extra buck. We looked at each other, shrugged and said "sure, why not". The steak turned out to be really good! Big! Great sear, tender, well seasoned, cooked to right doneness, great black pepper sauce, and even had some veggies to go with it. All for a buck! I think there needs to be a minimum of $30 spent.. The pork knuckle noodle soup also had plentiful, tender pieces. Crispy chicken legs and Curry minced beef are their classic items so it was good as always. When we first sat down there was only one other table but by the time we left, the restaurant was pretty full. Lots of regulars. Many of them were ordering the Eel and curry fried rice so we'll definitely try that next time. I also saw another table order the vegetarian sharks fin with egg whites that also looked good. Grew up eating at that billiards place right across form here but never actually tried this place till now. It was a bit empty when we arrived but the food was surprisingly food and it seems a lot of people order to-go instead. We tried the curry fish balls, curry triangles, beef cubes, and the vegi shark fin with egg whites and vegetables. All in all everything was well cooked and seasoned and not greasy - which is what many chinese places end up being. The employees were very friendly and there's indoor and outdoor seating. Parking was plentiful though it was pretty dark by the time we finished and there weren't very many street lights - so be aware! We'll probably be back, there's apparently a special right now where if you eat $30 worth of food, you can get a NY steak for $1... so maybe we'll try that next! read more
