Oh my gosh - love The Tavern in Coronado. The BEST, pub ever - Fabulous food, exceptional and friendly service, the staff actually appear to love being here! The music selection, eclectic and comfy atmosphere really made us feel welcome. And the mixed drinks and beer selection were outstanding. We had the mini Mac n cheese and double cheese burger with onion rings and fries. What a wonderful treat for a couple of out of towners. know they have healthier foods but we really needed comfort tonight - and got just what we wanted!!! read more

My wife and I were just strolling along Orange Avenue in Coronado, looking for a place to eat and we spotted Tavern.. lucky for us. The service was AWESOME (I believe the waitresses name was Keeley). She recommended the burger; which has to be one of the top 5 burgers in San Diego. We thought the atmosphere, service and food were so great that we will definitely bring a bunch of friends back. Tavern has a lot of potential. Great location, Great vibe, Great food. They get a 2 pt knock because our drinks took 25 minutes to get to our table. In their defense, they were understaffed as the manager explained to us. They comped us our meal and brought us a free desert so they definately get props for effort. Add some live music and a few more beer winches and we'll have a hot little spot to watch the game. read more

We just stopped in here while walking around enjoying the day. We weren't really hungry, but the atmosphere of the underground restaurant you can see in to from the street drew us in for a beer and some appetizers. The staff was attentive and the apps were sized appropriately and tasty. Beer selection was nice as well, and any place that happens to make Moscow Mules is a winner in my book. read more

On a different night, I might have really liked this place. Enjoyed the interior. It has charm. The feel of the place is nice. I only had coffee and dessert, which was good. Cast iron cookie. Cookie and Ice Cream. Um, yeah! Everyone else enjoyed their beers. My problem...the host/hostess (not sure if he/she was male or female?) gave me the, "Oops, my bad!" when I slipped and fell. I am very careful. I never fall on my ass. It had been pouring all day. The restaurant is below ground and no one bothered to put out a sign, rubber mat, nothing. The floor was flooded, the carpeted mat was two feet away from it and no one was doing anything to try and clear up the water that was pooling at the bottom of the stairs. It upset me that s/he knew there was something he should have done and didn't. It wasn't busy. S/he promptly put the sign up after and tried to clear up the puddle. Luckily, I'm not a drunk. I'd of probably killed myself, falling back knocking my head on the stairs. Who owns this place? The bartender tried to make up for it after my husband asked to speak to the manager. Sweet space. A mix of industrial and old tavern charm. If the bartender wasn't hipster looking I'd expect an old gent with a big handle bar mustache, vest with a bow tie..you know, using his rag to clean mason jars. Several of the staff were explaining dishes, drinks and ingredients around me, very knowledgeable and apparently very fresh. I just had a little happy hour after a long day of surfing but the mozzarella/basil dish and my slider was amazing!! Cute little bar. We came here after we were disappointed by another nearby bar. Downstairs looked really stuffy and dark so we didn't even want to walk down there. But their upstairs patio was really nice. Great for people watching and just getting fresh air. It's not a fancy place at all, but they do have good food/drink. Our servers were so sweet too! What we loved most was that It is very dog friendly! We had our pup with us and the whole staff was swooning over him. They even have treats for dogs! I really liked that their happy hour had really tiny bites. We got he Mac and cheese who I was about the size of a cell phone, but it tasted amazing and was exactly what we wanted. SUPER FOOD, SUPER SERVICE, GREAT ENVIRONMENT !!! Must say this is a new place for me -- and a keeper. It was very crowded but I was seated right away and had food within 30 mins. Ordered the big burger and (AWESOME) sweet potato fries. Great beer selection. Owner (guy) was always walking around, checking on things -- clearing tables as needed and just very "engaged" in his restaurant (success) !!! Everyone was very welcoming, knew their business and kept on top of order, service and flow of the place. There a big tv's for sports, but also tables for business lunches or small get togethers. The tavern is a small bar restaurant tucked away on orange ave in historic Coronado. You have to walk down stairs to enter which reminded me of a dive bar but it is nothing of the sort. The ambiance is very modern but not to overwhelming that you can't relax. The same goes for the menu. The food is home cooking with restaurants presentation making it perfect for date night. The cocktails and drinks he are a great complement to the food. Would recommend to anyone in Coronado. read more

First and last time I've eaten here. I used to live in Coronado and remember when Wendy's had this spot. I wanted to like it, the atmosphere was nicely done. It was a thursday night so I was surprised there were quite a few people in there, around dinner time 6:30p. We stopped there because we were both starving. Decided to sit at the bar since the tables were mostly full and we thought it would be faster. Bad choice. I guess at the bar you get bar food. One thing about menu's, you order and they take them away. I wish I would have snapped the menu before it left. By the time I was done eating, I just wanted outta there. Not pretentious? Jees, I think the pricing was pretty high. They were very short staffed tonight. It took the bar guy maybe 10mins to come by, which by then we'd looked at the draft beer selection in front of us (and looked and looked), but he was too busy to even take the drink order and left menus. We decided on chicken pot pie and roasted chicken, and honestly it was over 15 minutes before the bar guy came back. He said both chicken dishes would take over 40min to prepare (YIKES) so that's out of the question. We asked what was quick? The sliders (pork or beef), tacos and french fries. Ok. Ordered short rib sliders and tacos. And a beer and a lemonade. The beer was directly in front of us, if I had 2yard long arms, I coulda poured it myself, but even THEN he didn't pour. Finally got the drinks, and when the sliders came out a good 20mins after the pour, first bite they are not 'short rib' they are beef. Some kind of ground up beef or maybe it was ground up pork? Whatever it was, it seemed to be a fat meatball that had been cooked by deep fat frying. Note photo of the wood slab afterwards... the oil was literally gonna roll off that board. Groan, I was hungry, so put the two baby sliders down but an hour later sorry I did. My stomach has been upset since leaving. The french fries, for heavens sake, they are nothing fancee, they are potatoes!! Even if you put them in a recycled napkin and a cool CUP. Even then, they were limp, thick which I don't like and for the first time maybe in my life, I had no interest in finishing a simple cup of french fries off. The beer was great. I'd drink there, but not at dinner time when they don't have enough people to pour and keep track of customers. Our bar dinner, 1 beer, 1 soft lemonade, 2 baby sliders, 2 baby tacos and french fries ran $58. That seems overpriced and especially when it was not tasty and the service was unbelievably S L O W. While we WAited and WAITED for the check, I thought to snap the wood slab and couldn't wait to review. Then I was totally surprised to see how many good reviews this place had. My 'dinner' was free, I didn't pay, but I wouldn't go back again even if it were FREE. The menu is so short it was hard to figure something out I even wanted to eat, let alone wait 40mins to get. Brought family visiting from out of town. Young waitress takes order. All plates come except one, said it is coming right out. Thirty minutes later she says someone "took" her plate and they are making another. Finally comes out COLD. Apparently, they don't have a manager on duty at night? Inmates running the asylum? No sorries until she brings the bill. Of course..... Went back a couple of weeks later. Ordered the fish and chips. Fish came out cold and fries were lukewarm. It was a hectic day with the place packed, but the staff and kitchen provided great service and an even better attitude. Went here for lunch with the girlfriends. They have a lot to choose from, salads, soups, sandwhiches, burgers, even menu items like salmon, fried chicken and much more! I got a sauteed mushroom burger, it was sooooo good! I thought I ordered it medium done but I think she though I said medium rare, so it was more rare then I like my burgers. I got it with leafy greens instead of frise (to be a little more healthy haha). Its a little pricey but good quality food. They have a full bar, lots and lots to choose from! There fruity drinks are kinda expensive for how small they are but I will say this, they are very deliouse drinks! I wanna come back with my husband. I think he will love it here. read more

My boyfriend and I came here yesterday to celebrate an anniversary and had Katrina as our server. She was so sweet and very helpful. I got the fish and chips which was really good but they ran out of fries. However I didn't like the fact that I couldn't tell the employees apart from the customers: there was no dress code separating the two. Located on Coronado Island just off of the main drag--we walked in for lunch with 4 adults and 2 kids recently. AMBIENCE--4.5 stars--my kind of place! Set below street level, it is classic dark wood pub on the inside, with some unique Coronado twists in the decor, table settings, etc. There is huge window area that faces the street and lets some decent light in. Big bar, several TV's with the Euro Cup matches on--I was sold! SERVICE--3.5 stars--we were seated immediately by our server who was very friendly and helpful. The only reason I dropped it to 3.5 stars is that it took a long time to get our food--and they were not that crowded. FOOD--4 stars--menu included pub food with a California flavor, and some great salads, excellent soup with corn and chiles, and a classic (again a bit uninspired) kid's menu (though they did have the choice of a mixed green salad as a sign--which my daughter got and said was delicious!). My son got a kid's burger--which was good but slider-sized and a bit small for him (the server did warn us this would be the case!). I had the Mac and Cheese--and it is everything I hoped it would be! Served in a black cast-iron skillet, with lots of cheese, firm pasta, and very crispy topping--I would come back for that dish in a second! OVERALL--4 stars. Positives Nice location, well decorated Good food and I really like the grilled cheese Good drinks, the gents really enjoy their Moscow Mules (which I think are gross) Negatives Service was so so Got a bit cold, they had the doors and windows open. Means they have good air circulation for a place a bit below ground level! So I must have gotten the good cooks and good bartenders the couple times I have come here. The people I have gone there with go there pretty regularly and really like the food. I enjoyed my meals and my mixed drinks each time. Seems the complaints about service are pretty consistent though. Looks like the waitstaff are a bit distracted by the $30K millionaires LOL when are they gonna learn that for the most part the ones that are super flashy are the ones that can afford to spend the least amount. My group consistently over pays and over tips for even mediocre service unless we get crappy, inattentive service. Note: this review is a little late. Love the atmosphere of this place. Although we did not eat there the bar menu was wonderful. I had a glass of red zin... It was amazing how clean the inside of my glass smelled... Great food and very nice wait staff. We had two teenagers and a 7 year old in tow and we needed kid friendly. But we weren't sure if it was kid friendly when we checked it out. This place strikes the right balance. Lots of small bites and plates (sliders, charcuterie board, street tacos, Brussels sprouts) to choose from. The late night menu is fun. Food was okay. They are obviously understaffed as it took forever to get our food. My son ordered the kid's steak dinner which was literally three small pieces of cut up steak, sad looking broccoli (menu states green beans, waitress didn't tell us it would be substituted) which he didn't eat because he doesn't like it, but would have eaten the green beans. He never got the ice cream that was included in the meal and the service was so slow we didn't want to wait for it. One of our drinks never got to us and the waitress finally came over and asked if we received it. After awhile it finally arrived. Knowing how long the food was taking to come out we ordered dessert at that time. The waitress verified that we wanted to go ahead and order now even though we hadn't even gotten our food. She verified the type of dessert we wanted and it was still wrong when we received it. Other son ordered fish and it was good but small portion. The hostess should probably not deal with the public. She seemed really stressed out, unfriendly, and couldn't care less about making a person's dining experience enjoyable. read more

Food was decent for the price and area, unfortunately we were served a hairy fry. Yikes and uhhh!! Server dude was nice enough Sean D. Unfortunately had no empathy for the nasty-ass hair that was woven into the French fry. He did immediately take the fries back to have them replaced. He offered no discount, we asked for none. He offered not comps we asked for none. Overall the food was decent, bathrooms filthy with no paper towels or soap and the A/C exposed ducts around the Reastraunt were caked with dust and filth. My family and I walked past The Tavern and decided to try it. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal from beginning to end. We were all satisfied with our cocktails, especially the Paloma and my Chamomile Mule. The seafood appetizers were fresh and my salmon was the most delicious salmon I've ever had from a restaurant -- definitely worth coming back for. The double cheeseburger and flat iron steak were also very tasty and cooked perfectly. And for dessert, we followed our waiter's recommendation of salted creme and were licking the cup. Ordered the Cobb salad after a day on the beach as a refresher. The bacon was crispy, avocado slices generous. Service was average and food came out to front outdoor patio very fast.
