Coming here after walking outside on a hot humid day in NY hit the spot! My friend and I came in around 4:30 PM for dinner and were promptly seated by the hostess. Since it was an early time, it was pretty empty. The hand rolls were pretty good; all of the seafood tasted fresh. The spicy scallop was just the teensy bit spicy, but nothing that the general population can't handle. The spicy yellowtail crispy rice was surprisingly good; the topping was generous and the rice was crispy. Great place for a quiet early dinner and to potentially go drinking. Really enjoyed our experience here! We went quite early for dinner around 5:30, and it wasn't crowded at all. They sat us at the counter for an omakase-like experience. It's very open and counter seating only. Although in the name, I was expecting more of a Nami Nori experience rather than an "omakase" experience, but they served each hand roll one at a time, which was nice. I got the spicy matcha margarita which was delicious - not too sweet and quite spicy. Each roll was delicious and filling. We got the starving set which included 5 hand rolls. We had a good experience here! They were training some of the waitstaff, so it took a little bit longer, but overall still a great experience. It didn't feel as bougie as some omakase places that we've been to before, but I didn't expect it to. I thought the food was good, the fish was good quality, and for the price, you're really getting a very good deal! I liked that you could mix and match the handroll sets. They did bring me the wrong handroll once, but very quickly fixed it. I also thought that it was a good amount of food--not too much, but not too little. I felt satisfied with the meal, with a little bit of space left for dessert. Overall, I think I'd definitely come back. For those prices, it's hard to find a better sushi deal. read more

Walked in on a Saturday night without a reservation and we were sat right away. I was with one other person and we each ordered a crispy rice and a set of hand rolls. The positives: the crispy rice was great - super fresh and well seasoned. This is where the positives end. I eat a decent amount of sushi and hand rolls and the rice always matters - the rice here was inedible, it was truly almost a paste with a terrible texture and flavor. After the second hand roll (where the person I was with still hadn't received any??) we told our waitress very nicely that the rice was overcooked - she told us that just sometimes happens which is a pretty crazy response. I actually couldn't eat the rice and just ate the fish (which again, was totally fine) out of the hand roll but very evidently left all of the rice and seaweed on my plate. At the end of the meal I was given the device to pay on and it prompted me with an 18, 20 or 22% tip. I was VERY confused because the menu states that the tip is included in the price of the food (similar to kazu nori or sugarfish which are no tip establishments). At no point did the waitress mention that tip was already included and this would be additional, however it was in fine print on the menu given to us. I felt awkward and left an additional 18% tip which made the total bill come out to over $150 for 2 people while all the food was still clearly uneaten on my plate. To finish it off, the sushi chef came over to us after we paid and apologized for the rice, which he acknowledged was bad!!! Why on earth would you continue to serve rice which you yourself noticed wasn't up to the restaurants standards. I couldn't believe he served food that he knew was not up to the standard, admitted that to a paying customer, and not a single person there tried to right the situation by either offering to remake the food with new rice or comping the inedible rolls. The place has tasty rolls, but they are definitely too pricey. Each was about $9 and even though I have a small appetite, I was still hungry after getting the salmon ikura roll, salmon noshi, and spicy salmon rice. The fish tastes fresh, but I would not recommend the noshi since it was very small for $9. If I were to go again, I'd get the three roll deal. Let me start by saying I have only ever written 2 yelp reviews in my life and consider myself to be a very reasonable and understanding customer. That being said the experience that I had at Temakase was incredibly unprofessional and negligent and for that reason I feel compelled to share. When I ordered I shared with the server that I have a severe food allergy to nuts and sesame seeds and they confidently made a note and informed me what food would be safe. I then received a salmon roll and after taking a bite realized that there were sesame seeds in the seasoning used on the roll. I very politely informed the server and sent the roll back and let them know that I could see sesame seeds on the roll. He apologized and took it to the chef (in front of us b/c of the hand roll bar concept). The server then returned with the roll in hand and said that there were no sesame seeds on the roll. Mind you a sesame seed is clearly identifiable and I had with my own two eyes seen multiple in the seasoning used. The server and the chef then stood 3 feet to the left of my party and laughed at the fact that I was "wrong" and rolled their eyes as they delivered the rest of our food. At no point was an apology given, a replacement roll sent AND we were charged for the roll I could not eat. They continued to be incredibly rude to us for the remainder of our meal despite the fact I had been nothing but kind throughout a situation that put me in danger. Beyond the utter lack of customer service, it is incredibly frightening to me that the chef has no awareness of what ingredients he is serving and would not even look at a seasoning long enough to so clearly see an allergen. I will be reporting this incident to the health department as their clear negligence could genuinely threaten someone's life. read more

Service was a little off, but the sushi themselves were fantastic! We came on a weird lunch hour, so maybe that was why the place was empty. The sushi chef serving us let us talk among ourselves for the whole experience. Normally, there is acknowledgement from the chef when giving us our hand rolls, but it didn't feel like he wanted to be there, but I guess that was his style. The hand rolls type restaurant could almost come off as an elevated fast food to me. They make them as quickly as we eat them, and then we're off. I got the Starving ($33), because I was, and it came with 5 hand rolls. It was a nice diverse range, all offering such different dynamics. I'm having trouble choosing my favorite between the Spicy Scallop and Blue Crab. 5 rolls didn't seem like a lot at first, but it did leave my tummy satisfied! Most of us went with the "hangry" set menu. This was my first time at a place that specializes in hand rolls. I must admit I was a bit skeptical that 6 rolls would be enough food but it was, and it was delicious! They were very accommodating. They let my fiance substitute 2 rolls from the hangry set menu because he has a shellfish allergy. They also advised my friend on the best to go options because she wanted to take some food for a friend. My other friend is also pregnant and they had many cooked options available for her. The rolls themselves were delicious. The ingredients were fresh. As with any hand roll, it is best to eat them as soon as they are presented. We lost track of time talking for a bit and the seaweed started to get gummy. Again, not the restaurant's fault, just something to keep in mind while dining. They were all good but my favorites were the spicy scallop and spicy tuna crunch. The price isn't bad for the amount and quality of food you get. The review is for the food: Like the clean space, but not much more. It was very small portion hand rolls that turned out to be less fresh than the other really well known hand roll place. The crispy rice tasted ok, but for the price point 2 for $10 it's better to go with more satisfying Shake Shack or crispy rice from other sushi places that is worth the price point. The green tea is very diluted. Not common. I would not return. As for the lady behind the counter that other reviews kept mentioning of poor manners, she was fine with me. She served with a smile and attentively added more green tea. Remember, tipping is already included with food price. She's willing to work and my experience wasn't as bad as others described. The standout was the spicy tuna crispy rice. Delicious, if a bit large for a single bite. The rice was crunchy and the tuna was delicious. The spicy tuna crunch roll was my favorite. We also tried the Japanese sweet potato and blue crab rolls, which were ok but not standouts. Some of the worst service I think I've ever experienced--could have just been a rocky night with the staff, but it was pretty bad. Rolls were coming out very slowly and not in order, and while one person in our party had received 4 rolls an hour in, another had only received 2. This bad timing was present the whole time we were there. The server would come ask if we were all set before we had received half the food, and seemed confused all night. I had to ask for rolls we hadn't received in our order, and nothing was named as it was placed in front of us, so it was hard to tell what we had and had not already gotten. The food wasn't quite good enough to redeem the service, and the rolls were very hastily made by the time they realized we were missing quite a few, so not super enjoyable. It just seemed disorganized in general even though it was not busy at all. I work in the service industry so am almost always very forgiving with mistakes, but this was pretty bad in ways I didn't understand. I wouldn't be surprised if we ended up paying for a couple rolls we never received. Hopefully communication can be streamlined and other people have a better experience, but my friends and I will unfortunately not be returning. read more

First off, if you're like me and are not the biggest fan of raw fish, they have three cooked options for you: blue crab, lobster, and shrimp. Honestly, it's partly my fault for coming here with the cooked fish preference. I think I just assumed they'd have options for me since so many other sushi places have a variety of cooked and uncooked. BUT I realize that I have a warped perception of this place so take from my review what you will. I went with the shrimp hand roll and the lobster crispy rice. These things are EXPENSIVE for what you get. The hand roll was probably the length of my hand from top to bottom but a diameter of something slightly larger than a quarter. If you're going to come here, I definitely recommend getting one of their sets of 3/4/6 handrolls-- it's a much better deal than getting them one at a time. BUT again, that's only if you're a raw fish person. If you're not, the combos aren't an option. The crispy rice was equally tiny. Each plate came with three tiny cubes of crispy rice, with the fish on top. I thought the seaweed on the handroll could have been crispier, but in general I liked the taste. The crispy rice was the highlight for me-- even though it was tiny, I enjoyed what I got (despite the fact that it felt like each bite was like sharing tiny bites of one mini muffin with 5 people). read more

The crispy rice here is my absolute favorite thing to get. My usual go to is Crispy Tuna. It is exactly what it sounds like, little square rice bits wrapped in a crispy layer topped with tuna bits. The spicy salmon was a bit too mushy (saw the chef squirting this out of a bottle, so who knows how fresh it was) and the spicy scallops were too slimy for my taste. Temakase has been on my list for a little while! A friend was visiting out of town so we decided to check it out. They had plenty of resy's available so I booked one day of. When we arrived it was empty and had a cool vibe to it. It's all sushi bar seating. The menu was smaller/more limited that I originally thought. They have some sets, hand rolls by piece and crispy rice options. They were out of Uni, Wagyu and yellowtail when we went* What I tried- Hangry set: 6 hand rolls. Spicy scallop, Ikura salmon (this replaced the yellowtail roll since they were out), Blue Crab, Lobster, Toro & Salmon. My fave out of all was probably the blue crab. Note that there is truffle oil in the blue crab roll even tho it doesn't mention it on the menu. My entire party loved the spicy scallop hand roll which had togarashi spice and puffed crunchies in it. This was a lot of food and I probably would get a smaller set next time. Crispy Spicy Tuna Rice: Comes with 3 pieces. This was okay. Neither terrible nor mind blowing. Spicy Matcha Margarita: Good with a kick. Would get a Kyoto Sour next time instead. Overall, the quality of fish is not for me. A lot of the fish was chopped up fine to try and hide the quality of the fish. The ambience was cool and the format of eating is fun. Service was good. Got the hangry set which is a pre determined sets of hand rolls. This is pretty similar to kazunori but with a twist in their hand rolls. Their crispy rice is amazing and 100% recommend if you like that type of stuff. You can choose some spicy and some not. The crab one was a little too crabby for me though but everything else is pretty good especially the ones with the truffle flavor. The chefs prepare the rolls relatively quickly and at times feel a little rushed because we would want to eat the hand rolls as soon as it's placed on the counter to keep the seaweed crispy. The food was good and the scallop roll was def my favorite! However, the service was so bad. The blonde lady waiter was very dismissive and seemed like she did not want to attend us. It took her really long to ask our order even when we were calling her over, and when we asked for customization she simply dismissed it. We could see the chef put the kimchi crunch in our roll and she said the chef is not able to remove it because it is already mixed in, which it wasn't. When we asked the chef, he was able to customize it for us without one of the toppings. The ambiance was not the most sanitary as we had to watch them clean the cups in front of us by just dipping it into soap and dipping into water. Very unclean! I stopped here a little while back. They specialize in handrolls/temaki as well as crispy rice. After looking at the menu, I went with the starving set. This consisted of lobster, blue crab, samon, spicy scallop, and spicy tuna crunch. Overall it was fine though they add a lot more sauces compared some other spots so if you more of a pure taste of fish, I think Kazunori is better. The texture of the roll there is also better and you don't pay a tip. 1. Lobster /ロブスター This was good and unlike many of the other rolls, it didn't come with something distracting. 2. Blue crab- This had a truffle oil flavor which overpowered most of the flavor of the crab outside of the sweetness. Pretty good but way too much truffle flavor. 3. Salmon/鮭- This had some citrus on it (perhaps yuzu but I am unsure) which complimented it. Pretty good quality salmon. 4. Spicy scallops /帆立貝- This was good. Not too spicy of a sauce. Honestly better than Kazunori as there was just more scallop and it had some sweetness through the spicy sauce 5. Spicy tuna crunch- Crunch wasn't needed but luckily there wasn't much of it. This was probably the most successful. I decided to add the blue crab crispy rice afterwards which had I believe more crab from the roll but just like the roll there was a lot of truffle flavor. Yet again this was just fine. Overall the food here was fine but there are better spots. The rice was a bit too warm so the seaweed wasn't as crispy as at Kazunori also. Beautiful and clean interior, raving reviews, so decided to take a shot at ordering a small takeout snack for my partner's birthday, as he requested Japanese food. We ordered the small box of the Catch of the Bay ($23) which consists of 16 pieces cut: toro, lobster, truffle blue crab, and spicy scallop. For this price, I could've just gone to Hmart two blocks away for some sashimi, cut it myself, made some rice with it and it would've been hella more satisfying. Pretty disappointing. For the most part, the fish itself is quite fresh. Except the truffle blue crab, which was super fishy/weird/possibly gone bad. Idk. No truffle taste either. Pungent smell. The toro and the lobster were our favorites, but they were sooo itty bitty that I think I ate more scallions than anything. Now here's the part that completed ruined everything. The damn rice. RICE. How are you going to ruin rice?? You can already see from the pictures that the color is off. Mushy and didn't taste fresh.
