I placed an online order and while it wasn't ready when the time slot said it would be I understand things are out of our control and the staff was very friendly about letting me know they were working on my drinks. The shop itself is very cozy and welcoming. I didn't get the food but the pastries looked amazing. I am however concerned about my drink. One good thing about the drinks not being ready when I arrived is I was able to see how they made them. I know everyone is not Hispanic however when a coffee shop says they have a Mexican chocolate mocha I am expecting Mexican hot chocolate like the description states. I did not see that happen. The barista pulled out chocolate milk from a jug, warmed it, and then added some cinnamon or cacao powder and called it a day. That is not Mexican chocolate and frankly, that's false advertising. Writing this review is a bit difficult for me because I used to be in LOVE with Temple and their staff. But today was an experience that was completely unwarranted especially during the COVID-19 crisis that the world is going through at this moment. I'm a scientist at a major medical center. After only about 4 hours of sleep and having to be at work early morning again, I stepped out of the hospital around 11am to grab a cup of coffee here to get me through rest of the day. Because drinking the same hospital cafeteria coffee gets a bit boring after a while. When I got to the counter, I casually asked if Temple was offering healthcare workers discount. The reply I received from this bearded guy was ," When I go to a hospital, they don't give me a discount." The level of ignorance in this statement is beyond me. So I responded, "well right now healthcare workers are putting themselves in harms way to care for people while everyone else gets the comfort of staying inside their homes." As if it's up to the healthcare workers to give "discounts." A simple "No" to my question would have been sufficient. Not to mention this coffee shop makes you use their stylus to sign the iPad while cashing out, yet no hand sanitizer. What's the point of putting stickers on the floor forcing people to stay far apart while ordering then make them all touch the same stylus and grab their coffees -something that people would drink right away. ATLEAST have sanitizer available at the end of transaction. $13 for two cups of coffee, I'm positive they can afford a bottle of hand sanitizer! Temple might want to consider adding more treats/food and upgrading their WiFi. Each day that I come in the afternoon all the "regular" treats are completely gone while the vegan, GF and soy treats sit there mouldering. I'm not sure why they don't sell well here at the H st store but many folks who are ordering coffee/espresso/tea ask of there are any cookies/croissants or Banana bread only to be told they sold out much earlier in the day. If this happened once or twice I wouldnt say anything but in the last month it's happened every time I've been in. Also, there seems to be some major issues with your WiFi. We can be working away and the the WiFi will shut off for 20 mins. Everyday around 4 or 5:00 it just shuts off. Sadly today I left to go find a hot cup of tea and WiFi elsewhere. I love the staff here!! They are excellent. :) Want to keep coming here but not if the WiFi isn't reliable and there is nothing to snack on. :( read more

I've been a big fan of Temple Coffee Roasters for years and they've been one of the first shops that introduced me to specialty/third wave coffee. They are arguably one of the finest coffee roasters in NorCal. I've had a plethora of their coffee offerings over the years and have never been disappointed in the quality of their coffees. I frequent this location whenever I'm back in town and coming here always feels like home. The baristas are knowledgeable and quite skilled. I ordered a Gibraltar/Cortado tonight - it's arguably one of the more difficult drinks to make and usually a gamble when it comes to getting one that is properly prepared - and the barista absolutely nailed it! The espresso extraction was quite balanced and the milk texture and temperature was perfect. The excellent latte art was a welcome bonus. Some people really love Temple, and I will say I like the ambiance. The coffee is okay. It's tolerable college town coffee, and it's way better than Chocolate Fish. The drip coffee has just always been lackluster to me. The espresso drinks are pretty good. Just order a latte if you want a cappuccino, give up- let me tell you: I still have yet to have an actual "dry" cappuccino here. Instead I got a latte (shown in my photo). As someone who worked as a barista for years prior to getting on my career path, I have a serious discerning eye for a well made espresso drink, and I just haven't had one at this location yet. Every couple of months I'll meet a friend at Temple, hoping for the quality I want and it just falls short every single time. So, good ambiance, meh drinks. Nice people. Local, and I like supporting them. There's some awesome pottery/mugs on sale (some guy from Truckee sells some cool stuff), so good merchandise too. Not really a coffee person, but their enlightenment is amazeballs! Heard plenty about this place when I first moved back to Sacramento and never had the chance until a very special day that fate brought me here. I'm going to combine all my experiences in this post, but I love the setting at this location. It was a super hot summer day when I came here and it was packed with coffee lovers, tea enthusiasts, students, and people enjoying their Sunday afternoon. It was hard to look for a spot, but luckily the side stools next to the machines were open and we took it! We were able to converse and people watch where we were. Very industrial interiors with high volume ceiling and the space is lit up very, sometimes too bright for my eyes. I had Jasmine Green Iced tea or something to that nature, but it was alright to me. A bit too watered down, but my friend had a regular coffee and he loved it (and he's a coffee lover). He actually got the coffee for free just because he had big arm muscles, which was funny. It's not about girls with boobs anymore, haha! I finally tried the enlightenment the go around with the same muscle-lee guy, and I fell in love. It smelled so good and tasted even better! By now, I've had it many times and it taste better when you're having it there and enjoying the pot. Taking it to go is still good, but not the same feeling. Cannot wait till go back there again and just enjoy. I've had their lemon poppyseed scone once and it was a bit dried, but that's not going to stop me from coming back! Cheers! read more

Temple coffee, the place that taught me that all coffee isn't all the same. I've been coming here for the last 6 years and their espresso, enlightenment teas, and most recently their matchas, have been getting me through all my academic studies. This place has a nice covered outside seating area with a few tables with lighting(i would note that there is a restaurant that shares the outside seating area and it can get quite busy and noisy) the staff have always been friendly and welcoming every time I come in, they make me feel as if I'm family. As of today, they have limited inside seating and outside seating as well. They offer masks when you walk in, hand sanitizer, dots on the floor to enforce distancing and have a large plexiglass to separate customers from the workers. This is one of my go-to places in Sac. I highly recommend the Enlightenment, especially if you are a non-coffee drinker like myself. It's warm and soothing with a little caffeine kick from the green tea. I typically buy two of them...one to drink after letting it steep for at least 5 minutes and then another for the next day. They both are delicious, but the next day drink has a stronger (not too intense) flavor to it, which I love. I came here two years ago before they re-did the parking lot and had gotten a Thai iced tea and it was awesome and huge. Then I came here about a month ago and got whatever coffee they currently had brewed and it was some insane Brazilian madness. It was...strong. And flavorful. Unlike any coffee I've ever had. Terrible choice for me at 5:00 PM. Julia may not have gotten more than 2 hours of sleep that night. I'm leaving off one star because the atmosphere in there was...strange. I've only been here a handful of times and each times the coffee is great!! It doesn't have that burnt taste like Starbucks (Yuck). When you walk in you can smell them roasting the fresh coffee beans and if you walk to back area you can see it roasting! I usually get an iced latte or vanilla latte which you can never go wrong with. It's simple and good!! You pay a bit more for this coffee than other places but it's well worth it! I'd say it's my second favorite coffee spot other than Blue Bottle Coffee which is only in the Bay Area currently. Hopefully that changes soon too and they open one up here. read more
