We were so hungry that when we took the pictures, we had already eaten half of the plate LOL so that is why there are only 2 pieces of sushi for each roll when there were originally 4 because they were half rolls. From stretching the time limit to stretching my waistline, all-you-can-eat sushi is always a good time. That said, I'm on the borderline about recommending this one. Tengoku is one of the smallest, if not the smallest of the sushi restaurants which I've seen. Fortunately, they seem to be on Yelp Waitlist, so you can pretty much reserve ahead of time and just drive over. More importantly, it was the opposite of busy when I showed up on what you might call Independence Eve for an early dinner. They offer a la carte as well as AYCE; if you know me, then you know that I tend to pick the latter when it's an option. AYCE prices are $25.99 for lunch, $30.99 for dinner, and $15.99 for kids under 45 inches (in height, I presume). They do charge a 3% fee on all "non-cash" transactions (i.e. cards), so I'm glad that I had cash on hand. I always order a variety, starting with apps and such. The sashimi set (1 per person) arrived first, and although I did like the large rectangular hunks of salmon, the cajun albacore and pepper tuna came in odd baby carrot-esque shapes that didn't really hit the right visual or mouthfeel. The screaming o salad (also 1 pp) had three thinly sliced, peppered, and seared tuna slices which I would have preferred in the sashimi set despite their thinness. The texture was much better this time. Also, it did have the typical sauce for that salad. The more-cooked apps were better overall. The baked green mussels were topped with a tasty blend of creamy sauce and what I think was an eel sauce. The dynamite had a great creamy sauce with tender baby scallops, onions, and mushrooms. The creamy spicy salmon kama (1 pp) was immaculately cooked and worked well with a mildly spicy sauce that ironically wasn't all that creamy. The deep fried soft shell crab (1 pp) was tender and crispy, although it was probably left on a counter somewhere and didn't get to my table until it was more lukewarm. Other than apps, I usually try to stick to nigiri. The nigiri here are a mixed bag. I do wanna note that the portions are pretty much "normal" nigiri size, which means that fish and rice are both 1.5-2x what I expect to get from most AYCE places. This can take away from the variety which you'll be able to handle, and variety is usually a strong feature of this type of restaurant. They don't offer any daily special nigiri currently (just a sake 2-for-1 and maybe some apps), so I guess I didn't lose that much opportunity at all, but it's sad not to have the specials at all. Anyway, I thought the amaebi / sweet shrimp (1 pp) were fresh although more textured like traditional shrimp. The mirugai / giant clam (1 pp) were crunchy enough but seemed a bit skimpy and less-than-fresh. The escolar and seared escolar were roughly the same and tasted good enough, and they thankfully did not come sauced. The salmon nigiri was better than the salmon sashimi but not the best salmon I've had at AYCE. The yuzu salmon and yellowtail were the stars thanks to the light citrus kick. They don't say anything about half-rolls on the menu, but they do do them, so I ordered one. I went with the namesake Tengoku roll, which is crab salad and cucumber topped with seared beef, potato crunch, eel sauce, and scallion. The cucumber is crunchy, the potato bits are as crispy as you expect, and the scallion is fresh. However, the beef is slightly too tough to chew and makes it more of a chore to eat this than if I'd gone with something with fish on top. Given that I usually order rolls when I approach nauseating levels of fullness, that's especially not great for me. Unfortunately, dessert is only 1 per person too, no matter which dessert you choose. They have a standard selection of ice creams and mochi ice creams, but I homed in on the extra fancy Oreo options. After I got the server to explain that the Deep Fried Oreo was more traditionally battered and fried, while the Oreo Crunch was the same thing but with corn flake exterior, I went with the latter. Sadly, the corn flakes ended up a bit tough-crunchy rather than remaining as crispy as they would be in cereal form. At least the Oreo, vanilla ice cream, and chocolate syrup came out as expected. I would be remiss not to mention a couple of menu concerns. They don't offer uni (sea urchin) at all. Maybe it'd be better than sourcing inferior uni, but I think I'd err on the side of gambling on bad uni than not having the option. Aside from maybe some apps, they also don't offer rice-less rolls or similar concepts, which I do see at newer AYCE places. In the AYCE sushi realm, I'll say that Tengoku is about a 3.5 (which I should darn well be able to give as an actual rating if Yelp would just code it please and thank you). It's just fine if it's your neighborhood AYCE sushi joint or if you order only the hits rather than the misses, but I would have them in my 3rd tier of sushi at best. Had a great experience at Tengoku! Located on windmill just off the St. Rose exit Tengoku offers a sushi meets anime experience that is great bang for your buck. The atmosphere is one of a Japanese anime cafe mixed with an American influence on sushi. The all you can eat menu is expensive and offers a wide variety of rolls, nigiri, and appetizers. I recommend the shrimp and vegetable tempura to start along with the miso soup. The sushi is fresh and they do not skip on the fish portion size which is usually the case with most sushi places. The variety of rolls you can get is an ultra plus. I recommend asking the wait staff as they will usually point you in the right direction here. read more

My boyfriend had found this restaurant here on yelp and wanted to give it a try, as the reviews and food looked pretty good; First off i want to say that Flamin Hot Cheetos roll was unexpectedly sooo good! one of my favorites out of the menu! As well as the scallop and lobster roll! Veryyy uniquely good. All the rolls themselves mainly have imitation crab, even if it doesn't say it in the description it will most likely still have imitation crab in it, which i wasn't so pleased about that. Cons: It is an AYCE place, we ordered as we liked and some rolls were overly spicy as we couldn't finish them.. the staff was saying if you don't finish all the plates even including a bowl of rice you'll get charged for the whole item separately on top of the AYCE price... i understand the reasoning but i had NEVER experienced that in any other AYCE places... In conclusion for that reason i give it 3 stars due to the Flamin hot cheetos roll & lobster scallop roll as they were outstanding, it was a clean little restaurant but that is the only reason i'm giving it 3 stars. read more

This place is awesome! I love trying different sushi spots around the city. I saw Tengoku on Tiktok and had to give it a try. Everything was so fresh and tasty! My top favorite rolls were the Sun of the Beach, Creamy Eel and high roller. The sexy girl roll was good but not as good as other restaurants and it was so big it was hard to eat. They have great appetizers such as baked green mussels and other common classics. Their spicy garlic edamame was super flavorful, not super spicy. The crab eggroll was not for me, it was an imitation crab stick wrapped in eggroll paper, so not a huge fan. My cons for this restaurant was the physical menu. The layout was unorganized and the pictures didnt have names on it. Additionally the half rolls had huge pieces which made it challenging to eat in one bite. Overall the food was tasty. Small sushi place in the Green Valley area. There are about 7 tables in the restaurant, with 1 server and 1 food runner. When we arrived we beat the rush and were seated very quickly, after being seated the restaurant soon became full. Service was very friendly, service could be a little slow due to there only being one server, but food came all within a good time. For the menu, I love how the rolls were organized by type of fish! I had never seen it that way and it was super convenient. Aside from the normal AYCE sushi menu, they offer a good size cocktail menu and an a la carte menu as well. As for the food and main reason for the 3 stars: The cuts of fish for the nigiri were definitely not what we were expecting from a sushi restaurant. The quality wasn't the best as far as taste and texture. Nigiri is the main thing I usually eat at sushi as well, so that was a bummer. I was looking at pictures of their nigiri on other reviews as recent as 2 weeks ago, and the cut was COMPLETELY different. The nigiri on their other reviews look normal, (fish is cut very uniformly and all). But what we got were really uneven, thick cuts of fish. The food here is very good. They have a great variety of basic to more exotic and rare options for sushi. The dinners, bento plates, are also very good. This has quickly become one of our family's go-to spots. The service is just ok. When we do AYCE it doesn't seem they check on us enough to order more food and our water glasses are always empty. We have to constantly ask for water, napkins, to order another roll... We hate the tables and chairs so much. They are very hard and uncomfortable and they don't slide in and out. They try to add goofy pads, but they just raise you too high so you don't really fit under the table anymore. Me and my spouse can barely get in and out of the tables, and we always have to help our kids. This is so frustrating and uncomfortable. This is honestly the reason we don't go more often. read more

We told the waitress we were still waiting on things, clear sign that if I'm not eating and you have to ask me if I want more, your sushi chefs are going too slow. There are 3 tables it's not busy at all! The ladies making the sushi are just having the time of their life going as slow as possible. There was a couple that came in 5min after we placed our first order and their table was full of sushi. The young waiter did not seem to care enough about his job. The service was also great, our server was super friendly and got us extra napkins and such when needed. Only critique, I wish the Tengoku roll didn't have charred rice. It's a beef roll and fairly tasty, but all the good flavors are overwhelmed by the burnt rice taste. If the chefs (also super friendly and nice) are listening, char the beef, not the rice. It's a small place with about 8 - 10 tables which makes it nice and cozy and it was pretty decently busy when we got there. We didn't have to wait long for our rolls at all. They were delicious. The coconut one was my favorite. We also tried the hot cheeto one but I didn't get a picture of it. That one was really good. They do half orders on rolls which is amazing cuz you get to try more rolls! Nice place to get sushi. The rolls are well-prepared, and I especially like the shrimp tempura roll when I get sushi, so I tried the Lisa Lisa roll, which is shrimp tempura with cream cheese inside. I enjoyed it, but some of the pieces had a little too much cream cheese inside (that's just a personal preference). One thing is, I wouldn't recommend the chicken roll. Also, on their social media this roll had 3 sauces, ours came with 1 lol Orange Blossom | Salmon was fresh and soft. We loved the thinly sliced orange over the salmon! First thing first... If you are going for dinner def try to make a reservation. This is a cute small place and always packed!! This was my first time here and I understand why it was packed!! They offer ayce sushi and the sushi is on point. I really liked how they have the menu separated by main ingredient. We ordered a variety of sushi but only a few made it to a picture cause we were hungry (haha). I can say we enjoyed all of them. The one that shocked us when it came out was the spider roll. For those that believe they are sacrificing quality when going to AYCE sushi joints, it truly depends on where that is you're going! Tengoku, in my opinion, is an exception to the rule! It's very small inside which leads to fresh sushi even with the AYCE concept! I literally tried so many different rolls, and my favorite was one that is topped with a form of gravy and fresh scallops! It's outstanding, but incredibly rich, so be aware of how many of these you try! The seafood used in their sushi is as fresh as any sushi restaurant that you order by the roll only. Their spicy tuna and salmon are some of the best I have ever had, and the creativity of their unique rolls have won me over! Ayce. Hmm.. after a few bites in, server was hovering over me about finishing the rice or they will charge extra. I didn't say I wasn't going to finish it, I was just getting started. I thought the tone was rude to say the least. A little too thick on the rice for my liking anyway. Ordered a certain fish and did not get it. Only got it after ordering the 3rd time around. Asked for more ginger/wasabi 2x and the refill was with your original sauce dish. I thought it was unsanitary taking their hands from old sauce dish just to walk behind the counter to refill. Mind you that I had soy sauce on the original dish. Perhaps I don't want the new ginger w the soy sauce. Maybe they didn't want to wash extra dishes? Who knows, but that shouldn't be my problem. Overall, cooked items were little overcooked and chewy. Raw fish was not as fresh or competitive given all the other ayce options out there. The hovering was rude. I usually order bulgogi and pork belly but they don't have it. Their yum yum sauce on the Johnny roll was good. We ordered miso soup, upon noodle, a couple of baked rolls and a few nigiris. Their oreo crunch and deep fried oreo comes in one oreo on top of a scoop of ice cream. The service was superb. There were two main servers and they were fast to take our orders and deliver our food.
