Great neighborhood spot! One of the best sushi experiences ever! On my first night in NYC, I was yelping around for a place for dinner. Once we narrowed down that we were in the mood for Japanese food, Tenzan was one of the top spots listed. After reading reviews for a couple of places, we settled on taking the bus down to go to Tenzan. Tenzan offered many sushi rolls that I haven't seen at other restaurants. I was last here in May but can't remember the names of the rolls I tried but I do recall that they all included mango. One of the rolls I do remember was called the healthy roll. While the name itself my be discouraging, the roll was quite refreshing and included mango, apples, cucumber, and tuna (i think?). We also tried the Unagi Don which I highly recommend if you're a fan of eel. They sent bad broth with my ramen. The cashier I called said they'll send someone to come pick it up. I only tasted the broth so they ramen was basically untouched. I assumed bc they came to pick it up meant they were refunding me. Wrong. The cashier took my order back and refused a refund. We were in the mood for sushi so we randomly walked into Tenzan. It was around 5 pm and it wasn't too busy. The server was really sweet and helpful. We asked her if she had any suggestions, and she told us about this "sushi pizza" they make. We went ahead and ordered it because it sounded different and I had never heard of something like this before. It looked and tasted amazing! Had a lackluster experience at Tenzan 89. I came in for lunch and ordered the Bento Box Sushi lunch special. It comes with miso soup, salad, shumai, a California roll and 5 pieces of sushi. Everything looked great on the plate, but the rolls and sushi were poorly constructed and fell apart as soon as I touched them with my chop sticks. That obviously isn't supposed to happen and ruined the experience for me. Also, the shumai were ok... but nothing to write home about (only to complain about here on Yelp apparently) With the above said, the service was fine. Waitress was attentive to the table which was nice. Terrible Teriyaki First off, they bought brought us the wrong dish and tryed to tell us that we ordered it when we definitely did not. And then when our food actually came it was terrible. My friend got the crunchy sushi and it was not crunchy. I got the steak teriyaki which was terrible! It was not tender and tasty like good teriyaki normally is. It was hard, chewy and tough. The food is so fresh and delicious but I have to say I just ordered for them and they went above end beyond to make sure I received my food properly. I ordered online and when I was greeted by my front door on my floor in my building it was like the restaurant was there they were trying to reach me and my phone was unavailable I had left it in the car, and they made sure I would receive my food and it was still on time! i went here for lunch yesterday. The miso soup is bland. They need to add more salt. Their salads are yummy with the dressing but they pour too much dressing on top of the salad. If they use less and perhaps make it chunkier it would be better. The chicken teriyaki was okay. It was thin and okay. I would say its an average chicken teriyaki with a decent glaze. It was on a bed of grilled onions which were cooked well. The sushi deluxe was much better. It came with 8 pieces of sushi (2x 4 types of sushi) and a Tuna roll. The tuna roll had a good fish:rice ratio. It was like 85% tuna and 15% rice, which is uncommon since most places usually make it like 50:50. The sushi slices were huge compared to typical sushi restaurants. All of the fishes tasted very fresh, especially the Tuna. Tuna is a hard fish to maintain fresh; many times you can taste a hint of fishiness but not in their pieces. The rolls that they offer look good, but we didn't order any. Will i come here again? Craziness! I ordered the Godzilla roll, thinking I was getting a roll with shrimp tempura. As I am eating it, I realize it doesn't taste like shrimp...I looked, and see it's chicken! I have been to Tenzan more times than I can count. Hmm...slightly embarrassing considering I can count pretty high.... I could list all the great things about it but let's be honest, you probably won't go there for the amazing ambiance, the authentic cuisine, or the convenience of location. The ambiance is pretty standard of a sushi restaurant, the cuisine could probably be more true to culture, and no one walks to 2nd ave & 89th for "convenience." HOWEVER, the food is tasty, it is not expensive, the service is good, the place is clean (or seemingly), & you will most likely leave satisfied. (Unless you are searching for the sushi of your dreams). Which in that case, you should probably just go to Japan already. We live in New York. Be content with the ability to purchase an "authentic" Gucci bags for $25 or hot dogs & tater tots at 5am. But really, Tenzan is a nice place to take a friend or even a big group. Sweet potato roll, eel avocado, & rock shrimp avocado are my favs. Seaweed salad is also pretty good. Try it. You will not be sorry. I recently moved to the neighborhood and was looking for a new go-to sushi spot. I had dined here once before and had a relatively normal experience with generally good food. Five of my friends and I decided to eat here for dinner last night as I had previously had a good experience. Last night was absolutely terrible. We made a reservation for 7PM and arrived right on time. The restaurant was about halfway filled, so it was not particularly busy. We ordered within 10 minutes of sitting down and our appetizers came fairly promptly. However, our meals did not arrive until 8:15, after we checked in and followed up with our server 3 times. When our food finally arrived, my boyfriend's dish was cold, and they had forgotten another friend's sushi entirely. When we informed them that a plate of sushi was missing, the server did not hurry to rectify the situation. Instead, she said "OK" and resumed her task of pouring water for the rest of the patrons in the restaurant. The sushi arrived 20 minutes later, after the rest of us had already finished our meals. I consider my group of friends to be very patient and understanding, as we've all worked in the restaurant industry and know how rough nights can go. However, we were extremely disappointed that neither the servers nor the manager offered any apologies or showed even the slightest degree of remorse for the poor service. They presented us with a full bill and we requested a discount, which they were extremely reluctant to grant. The lack of professionalism and service to their patrons was very apparent and demonstrates that their view towards running a business is selfish and completely misguided. This is a chain sushi joint and a pretty good one too. I sat at the bar and enjoyed a standard selection of nigiri including uni which was fresh and piled high. Not many of the tables were filled during dinner time and I sat at the bar while watching in amazement as four sushi chefs worked nonstop the entire time I was there. If there were only eight guests in the restaurant, what the heck were they doing? It turns out they do an enormous amount of sushi take-out business. Once I noticed the ticket machine I could see the orders spitting out at a constant rate. This is a great indicator for a sushi restaurant because when you're dealing with lots of raw fish knowing there is a steady and constant turnover is pretty important. read more

My conclusion is that this restaurant is definitely not open or run by Japanese. The food is edible but definitely not authentic, and not prepared by Japanese chef. We like Japanese food, ate in many authentic Japanese restaurants and are quite familiar with Japanese cultures. I was really surprised by the amount of positive reviews here, because today it was my 3rd time I made a mistake of choosing this place for a dinner, and I think it's my own fault that I keep thinking "maybe it was just a fluke last time and they will do better today" every time there is a long wait at Cilantro next door . Their sushi are OK, but that's where the list ends, so maybe they should drop a claim of being a "restaurant" and just stick to sushi. Miso soup is watered down version of the concentrate sold in grocery stores. Pork Teriyaki entree consists of 10 pieces of dry,tasteless, hard-as-a-rock pork medallions on a bed of lightly fried caramelized onion and a small bowl of white rice. Noodles are bland. Basically everything we tried here was just on the border of ok and meh. Hence the 2 stars. I suggest instead of Tenzan try Ichiro 2 blocks down, you will not be disappointed. read more
