Pulls in a solid four stars every time. Efficient service, good value, satisfying. The maki A combo is great value - three fish filled rolls (none of those California or Cucumber filler rolls - I mean, why bother???) for around $14, including soup or salad. Also good lunch specials. read more

SO DISAPPOINTED!!!!!! I love the east side Tenzan!! when i saw it on the uws, i was excited and stopped in...well, it was practically the opposite. Not fresh. salmon was not going down as i hoped. had the kobe fried appetizer and nearly threw up when i bit into something i should not have...i asked for ponzu only to receive regular soy and i was charged for someone else's meal which was much more. left feeling ill and am home drinking tea to sooth my belly. We went here for lunch, while the prices for the lunch meals weren't terrible the drinks were painfully over priced and poorly constructed. They also came in small glasses, clearly not worth the price paid. The rolls werent anything special, lots of filler veggies and loosely wrapped. I was unimpressed. service was by far the worst part. They served us our meals at different times, then they would not return to refill drinks. The bill took 20mins to deliver and we had to walk to the waiters station to pay after more extended waiting. My boyfriend took me here for our anniversary, hoping for a relaxing night. What a disappointment. We ordered a bottle of sake, several appetizers & numerous entrees. He spent a lot of money here and unfortunately the night was ruined by an extremely rude & unprofessional person who worked there. I orderer the beef yaki udon, and the beef didn't taste fresh. I told the woman behind the bar -- who was very pleasant -- that I'd like to return it for something else. She sent over a short gentleman who was extremely rude to us and said in an aggressive tone, "this is the last thing I'll do for you." He said it loudly in front of everyone at the bar, which was embarrassing. I don't go out to eat to be reprimanded on my anniversary. I ordered shumai, it didn't arrive with the original delivery. I called them and it was delivered very soon thereafter. I ordered beef sukiyaki. I received chicken sukiyaki. Unfortunately, I discovered this well after the delivery of the shumai. I specifically opted to NOT have plasticware and napkins delivered, and I received a TON of plasticware and napkins. Who is checking these orders as they come in? Good food, but not worth the frustration of having 3 things go wrong with the order. read more

My wife and I get sushi from here all the time, whether its from Grubhub or when we just walk in and sit at the sushi bar (best spot in the house). They have great seafood, always fresh and such a great variety. will continue to go here as our sushi place for as long as we live on the upper west side. read more

As an avid sashimi fan, I know perfect raw fish when I taste it ... Tenzan tops my list for the most delectable, super-fresh and extensive sushi menu in NYC. I've eaten at Nobu, but I'd choose Tenzan's sushi any day. The cocktails are equally superb. 1 star deducted for sports-wielding tv's and the general decor. Not recommended! I can't complain about the service. The service staff was prompt and friendly. But the sushi was sub par. The sushi to rice ratio was disproportionate and had too much fish. The rolls also had a mushy like texture since they chop the fish too finely. Lastly, I have had much fresher fish. The same qualities were unfortunately reflected in my friend's dish as well. I used to order from here all the time. And was always pleased. However since they expanded the quality went down. But it was still decent for the price. I just placed a delivery order, and told them all I had was a $100 bill. The delivery person insisted he didn't have change and that I have to put it on a credit card. When I called the restaurant, they said they had no way to know it was real so he wouldn't take it. If they had said that when I placed the order fine. But not after I wait 25 minutes for the order to come, then they make it, bring it, and I can't get my change. Haven't tried the other Tenzan locations, but this place is a sure bet for decent quality sushi. Nice thick cuts on their nigiri, and they don't skimp on their rolls. Try the yellowtail or spicy tuna rolls, the fish isn't just reject mush like most other sushi places. Cucumber rolls have thinly sliced cucumber for a better texture than the single chunk style. Can't comment on the other food, but if you're in the UWS this is a dependable sushi spot. read more

I just ordered a couple of rolls from here this afternoon and here are my thoughts in real time (i'm eating as I'm typing). I have frequented the fancy japanese restos across the country in addition to the regular dives and hole in the walls that I love oh so much- and so far, as I am typing and eating my two rolls, I have come across big, hard scales in my spicy tuna rolls. I would post pics but that would be totally gross. Yuck!!!!! There are a lot of things that I am willing to let go in hopes of greatness when it comes to the culinary experience, but scales in my sushi is not one of them. read more

The service is good, the waitstaff is attentive and very kind. They have a wide variety of rolls, including box rolls which I had never tried before but now I'm hooked. Always a great neighborhood place. The sushi here is much better than most in the neighborhood. Even if your not in the mood for sushi you can go for soba noodle dishes which in my opinion are great! AGree with review by CAt T below. Food is uneven--some of the sushi good (delicious yellowtail the other night) but other, not so great. I also wish the salads that come with the meal you order tasted fresher/or at least if the dressing was room temperature I wouldn't feel like they pulled it all from the freezer/pre-made the day before. The best thing about this place IS the decor/atmosphere. It is a large, two level, open space, with three large TV screens over the bar visible to much of the restaurant. I've been here several times a year over the last few years as I live in the neighborhood and I must say, it is the ambience that makes me choose this japanese restaurant over others in the 'hood, not the food. I went here with my family and friends, and it wasn't a very pleasant experience. The sushi was good, but my mom's friend found her fish not fresh, to the point where it was almost un-edible. Later, I finished my sushi and put my plate aside, when I found out there was a moth in my plate! Just moments after I found this insect, the waiter came to pick up our dirty plates. I showed the waiter the twitching moth on the plate. He took a close look at the moth and asked me, "Are you sure that's an insect?" Instead of taking care of the problem immediately, he asked me if the moth was an insect! Really?! Also, who knows how long that moth was in my dish! I was lucky that I didn't eat it with my sushi! Later, we asked to see the manager. We were told that he wasn't at the restaurant at that time. Instead of giving us free drinks or even showing that they were actually sorry for this inexcusable incident, they let us pay the check normally and leave as if we were satisfied with what we got. Came here recently with a friend upon their suggestion and was very disappointed. I ordered the lunch box- good price, but you get what you pay for. The only edible things were the spring rolls. Salmon was swimming in sauce and overcooked. The sushi tasted OLD. In fact, nothing tasted fresh. That's the one consistent thing I can say about the meal. Not fresh. I left most of it over. Excellent sushi and specialty rolls. I myself do not like rolls that are heavy into avocado but f I avoid them the rolls here are great. The sushi is notable for being having a lot of fish and a small amount of rice--the perfect recipe for me! Upstairs is the nicest place in the restaurant. read more

Sushi is really inventive, service is great and the atmosphere is casual. Their sushi pieces (niguiri) are of great size and the fish is truly fresh. The best rolls have to be the Avocado Dragon Roll, Avocado Peanut Roll and the Spicy Girl Roll. The White Tuna is great too! read more
