Having researched the effects of traditional nail polishes and gel/UV, I have opted to refrain from getting manicures/pedicures for many years. However, after over a decade of avoiding them, I decided to look for a safer option. I chose The Basic Nail Shoppe because they specialize in manicures, pedicures, gel, and Gel-X using less-toxic products, cruelty free, and made in the USA or Japan. They boast on their website that their products do not contain harmful toxins such as dibutyl phthalate, toluene, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, or camphor. They offer 2 types of less-toxic nail polishes: Zoya and Dazzle Dry. They also carry OPI. A quick google search had me choosing Dazzle Dry. I made an appointment using their easy to use online system and received email and phone calls to confirm the appointment. Upon arrival, I was greeted with a friendly smile and I was offered a complimentary water bottle after being seated. I had the Signature Pedicure ($65) which included the pedicure (nail trim & shaping, cuticle care, and a buff/polich, 10 minute massage, hot towel, scrub, and mask/lotion. You have a choice of scents for your pedicure (milk & honey, green tea, or lavender). They use a boxed system, so the scent is applied to the soak, scrub, mask, and lotion. The entire experience took an hour. The massage chairs weren't super comfortable. They were ok, but the action was a little rough even on the low settings. The music in the salon was piano covers of pop songs. Overall the facility was very clean and modern. Sylvia was very pleasant and did a great job. She was very gentle. Updating my review as the owner reached out to address my concerns and ensured me that that the employee who did my manicure did not uphold the salon's sanitary guidelines and this had been promptly addressed to ensure this never happened again. She refunded me for the manicure and offered me a free one if I choose to go back. It sounds like this was an outlier, so I am hopeful no one else will have a similar experience. But my gel manicure isn't holding up the way other nail salon gels usually have, which is disappointing. This was my first vegan nail salon experience! The shop is big and clean. I immediately felt the difference in smell alone as it didn't wreak of chemicals like regular nail salons do. Staff is really friendly:) Huge color selection. Even though I was late to my Friday morning appointment, they still took me in, and I didn't feel rushed. My gel manicure was done by Vivian. I arrived on time and waited about 5 short minutes for my technicians to be ready. I reserved the classic manicure and pedicure services. I had gel on my toes and dip on my hands from previous nail salons I was charged an extra fee to remove those. I normally don't get charged this fee at any other nail salons. The removal fee for gel was $5.00 and removal fee for dip was $10.00. On to the polish ... The dazzledry polish I received was not the full dazzle dry product (multiple steps) It was only the polish that was used during my services. I was not impressed with the polish itself. The application turned out lumpy and not shiny. Could be because a few of the steps were missed. I can't really say, as this was my first time trying this polish brand. The manicure was basic but acceptable. I enjoyed and liked the pedicure. Vivian was the technician who did my pedicure and she was attentive and helpful. Well... I would give this salon a 100/10 if I could. I've been putting this review off for a while because I thought The Basic Nail Shoppe was too good to be true but it definitely is BEYOND too good. This place is the only nail salon I'll ever go back to! The interiors are completely new, redone and honestly everything is immaculately CLEAN. The spa chairs are new, like everything else, and are beyond comfortable. It's not a place that has trendy pretty chairs that hurt, these are deep tissue massage chairs that actually is what you want! They calmer play spa like ambiance music and it takes away any daily stress and makes the nail experience top tier. At the grand opening they gave me complimentary coffee and spirits which I loved. That then carried through out my other visits. Another standout experience I love is that the owners are so hands on, KIND, and knowledgeable. They try to get to know you and are easy to converse with, you rarely see that kind of conversing in other salons. Overall, you can tell they care about their customers and their workers also carry that same demeanor. I had such excellent service, everyone here is so generous with suggestions and explanations regarding services. I never had dazzle dry gel roll today but honestly love it and how it lasts! Parking- their shop is conveniently next to Marshall's, the parking isn't an issue like other places. After a shopping visit I like to to pop in. I don't live nearby but think it's worth the drive to experience this quality of service and the vibe. I've had several dissatisfied experiences in nail salons in nearby Pasadena salons and and I don't think that is possible here. I have nice natural nails so I really care about not damaging them. My primary nails tech's nails made a large hole in her gloves that her finger was sticking through, and she never replaced them, which made me feel uncertain about the cleanliness.
