Both exceeded our expectations - flavor was excellent. From our crappy breakfast yesterday at Long Beach Cafe this definitely redeemed our breakfast in Long Beach. And they got the coffee RIGHT esp being named Coffee Cup Cafe - can't really risk to get that wrong. They serve Boyd's coffee which is a plus. I don't know about your grandma but mine gets hangry real quick. We got through it together though and wound up having an amazing breakfast. This place gets pretty noisy and busy so might not be the best place to bring your grandma unless her hearing aids are fully charged, but you can bring your friends to have a great cup of coffee and some really delicious scrambles. My friend and I wanted some good brunch food around the area after visiting the Aquarium, so we stumbled across this place (thanks Yelp!). Busy restaurant on a Saturday, but the wait time wasn't too bad. Turn-around was quick. FOOD: Chorizo Omelet (Regular) - Delicious dish! Came here at 11:30am on a Sunday and the wait for 7 people was 45 min to 1 hour. I can see why it's worth the wait. The service is great, our server was a nice and humorous woman, she quickly took our orders and showed that she understands the menu very well by helping my friend select a breakfast item. What stood out to me are the breakfast potatoes, they are twice-fried (pan-fried then deep-fried) and are amazing. I've never had anything like it, it's a cross-over between french fries and tater tots. So worth it. I had ordered Juan's Favorite with added sour cream. The vegan chorizo is delicious and they definitely do not skimp on the avocado! My boyfriend had David's Scramble but substituted the regular sausage for honey apple sausage, which he loved. Coffee Cup is a Long Beach treasure. Their coffee is so good (I love when they have flavored coffee, cinnamon or butter pecan), I can drink it black without cream or coffee and it's delicious. A waitress once blew my mind by recommending me the 4th Street stuffed French Toast and to drizzle it with the Boysenberry syrup. I split it with my husband as our breakfast/dessert. He loves the Chile verde omelet and I jump between that and the soyrizo omelette. Also, their potatoes are crazy delicious. Every piece of leftover potatoes always get eaten. I only had a bite of this but it was so delectable that I contemplated ordering a bowl to-go. Chicken Pesto Sandwich: Grilled chicken, melted provolone cheese, basil, lettuce, pesto mayo and tomatoes on a ciabatta roll. Amazing!! I was stuffed but it was so tasty that I wanted more. So when we found ourselves in need of breakfast in the San Pedro/Long Beach area on a Thursday morning, it was a toss up between The Coffee Cup Café (where we had never been ) or another place that we already loved, Jongewaard's. I opted for a new adventure. And I am happy to report that it was one fine adventure. I am captivated by genuinely old time, 1950-ish, neighborhood diners. The café itself was nothing fancy. No snooty attitude, plain interior. What you see is what you get. Business was not crowded that day, we could just walk in and seat ourselves. We felt comfortable and welcome. The breakfast menu was gratifying, with old traditional mixed with innovative new. The server was delightful, the coffee excellent (a good thing since the name does suggest it should be), good smells coming from the kitchen, and the prices beyond reasonable. I so hoped the food would win me over too. And the food we ordered was spot on. First to arrive, my Combo. With no hesitation I had upgraded (for a whopping 50 cents) to two Pumpkin pancakes that came with my two eggs and two slices of bacon. I cannot stress how perfect this simple breakfast was. The tender, moist pancakes screamed of Autumn, the not so thick bacon was really good tasting, the eggs, well, I have not tasted better. I know this may sound a bit strange for "just eggs", but as one other reviewer had already observed, these tasted so fresh, and were cooked so perfectly on a well seasoned griddle that was unadulterated by artificial flavored grease, I have never enjoyed eggs more. And my perfect breakfast did not break the bank, coming in at around $6.50. I had a choice of maple syrup or a boysenberry syrup. I loved the 1950's style glass pitchers with red plastic slider tops, five total, each containing a different homemade salsa or syrup. Mr. B ordered the steak and eggs. The steak was a nice, breakfast sized steak, cooked correctly to med rare, his two excellent eggs, and a cup of sweet fruit chunks. Hands down, One of THE best po hash browns I've ever had. This place does it right with crispy cubes of po and a soft center with great flavor and not just salt uhmmm mm! We arrived around 9am on a Friday and I was expecting it to be packed but we were sat right away. Their menu has a variety of American breakfast fare along with lots of Mexican breakfast dishes. There are three types of salsa on each table so instantly I decided I needed something that I could use salsa on. I split the Breakfast Quesadilla with my boyfriend - scrambled eggs, cheese and green chiles inside a perfectly grilled tortilla. They also provide warm salsa, sour cream, and avocado, AND a heaping pile of potatoes on the side! The menu description sounded a lot more exciting than it tasted, but it wasn't terrible either. And the salsa provided on the table was tastier than the warm salsa that came out with the dish. It was more disappointing that they didn't have more coffee options considering the name of the place. The up side and possibly the reason for their high Yelp rating? Food came out super FAST! And they were very friendly and constantly came back for water refills. A friend and I came to Coffee Cup Cafe for a weekday brunch around 11:30. The place was crowded, but we were fortunate enough to get the last open table. I'm not surprised to read that there are long lines on the weekends because the food was pretty darn good. While the menu really isn't anything unique or special, they do a great job with what they do have. The Eggs Benedict was really tasty. Probably one of the best ones I've had in recent memory. Nothing fancy about it, not even a garnish. Just some two perfectly poached eggs, Canadian bacon, English muffins and an excellent Hollandaise sauce. The Corn Beef Hash was also really good. Texturally, it reminded me of the type you get out of the can (which I like) because the beef was ground up and the potatoes were diced super small so when you fry it you can crispy edges to contrast with the soft mushy center. I hate it when places use whole chunks of meat and the dish turns more into a stir fry. Might not be for everyone, but I thought it was delish! While they don't have hash browns, their country potatoes are really good. It's fried so some pieces have that crispy crunchy texture. Service was friendly, but spotty. It was probably because we were seated in the back, but after we got our food, no one checked up on us until we were done with our meal. And what's up with being cash only? My boyfriend and I ate breakfast here about 3 weeks ago, when they first opened for outdoor seating. We had eaten here once before pre-COVID and enjoyed it, and just decided to check it out again randomly. There were about 6 groups of tables, each with a large umbrella for shade, lined up parallel to the sidewalk outside the restaurant. We sat away from the other groups to be a little safer. The staff were wearing masks, face shields, and gloves. The service was great. The management/staff were really nice and just excited about being back open for business after a hiatus. The menu has changed since we were here last time. And also because of COVID, they aren't doing the free coffee outside. When ordering, they were really accommodating about making substitutions in our meals. We both got the Dr. W's, with whole eggs instead of whites. And I subbed soyrizo instead of chicken for mine. It was really good sized, delicious, and a great price. I also got one piece of the french toast, which was cooked really well. They have a flavored coffee of the day (hazelnut when I came through) and it's delicious and can be ordered hot or iced. Their hollandaise was delicious and has a slight twist as it had an extra bit of tangy flavor. The breakfast burrito was great and you can see they took great care to make sure the contents were evenly dispersed so you get a little bit of everything with each bite. Their friendly staff, spot on breakfast and of course their coffee will bring me back here. Yelpers recommended the green chili omelet and it was a gateway to try more things from Coffee Cup Cafe. Now every time I head to Long Beach, I see if I can fit a Coffee Cup Cafe stop into the schedule! I went in this morning and we ordered a breakfast quesadilla with bacon and the potato scramble with bacon. Both were excellent! I always order the potato scramble and have tried to recreate it when I go to other restaurants, nothing ever comes close! If you're coming on a weekend be prepared to wait a bit, but that's part of the experience! If you go in on a weekday, there normally isn't much of a wait! Their potatoes!!! So crispy. I always get their Baja burrito with steak which comes with fried potatoes, generous portions of avocado and sour cream. So big but I still finish most of it even tho I keep telling myself to save it for next morning. Sauces: I love their green sauce. I really like how all the condiments and sauces are on the table and you don't have to bother servers about bringing you more. The service is super awesome and friendly though. Cash only. Super excited to go to Coffee Cup bc the food is great and the staff is friendly. Ordered a tuna melt with sweet potato fries, half turkey sandwich with fries ( added bacon and cheese) an iced tea, oj, 2 sides of ranch. Bill left on table and it was $50. Told waitress she must have added incorrect and she took bill and came back with correct amount. Waitress was nice and she apologized. I am a waitress myself and I too make mistakes. However Coffee Cup is a CASH ONLY business and I wonder how many mistakes are made by all staff members and how many customers dont catch mistake or afraid to speak up. Just a thought. read more
