So I walked over to this place because I was told it was great. There was a line outside because they hadn't opened the doors yet. Then they open the doors and asked each party how many people they had. And pointed where they should sit. Inside there's one tiny room which is also the kitchen. There were about 20 seats total. I was customer #17 and was very excited! (#21, 22 and so on were turned away and told there was a wait.) I got the calamari meatballs which were different but just ok. I got the scampi style clams which were outstanding. The broth that the clams were bathing in was awesome. I thought I didn't want any bread but found myself in a must-dunk situation. I finished up with the black pasta puttanesca with shrimp and scallops. This was very special. I can't explain why but I highly recommend. The service was fine. I lived in Boston for 30 years. My wife lived in Chicago when I met her. This is one of the first places I took her to when trying to convince her that Boston was a good place to live, We now live in the San Francisco Bay area, and this is the second place we go to when we visit Boston, the first bein Galleria Umberto. Like Galleria Umberto, this place compares very favorably with places we've enjoyed in many trips to Italy. Try the linguini with clams in white sauce, but do not, under any circumstances, miss the calamari salad. The only down side is that there is no room whatever in this telephone-booth sized place, but it's more than worth the trouble. read more

The kitchen is right smack in the middle of this quaint place and it is a thrill to watch the cook create your delicious meal. Very small place - wish they had some tables outside on a day like today. The food was good, but nothing we haven't had before. Cash only puts a damper on a place like this, as well as being flanked by several excellent restaurants. Their stick is the black ink pasta, which is overrated. They also serve in the pan it was cooked in, which has its pluses and minuses. If you are looking for something that is authentic Boston, head here. I was looking everywhere in North End for a table for one, but sadly, no tables were available anywhere. I happened to walk by 'The Daily Catch', and only about one or two tables were taken, so I decided to give it a shot. I was SO unimpressed with the surroundings (it was dirty, cramped, and I have to say, it's worse than Harlem) and most of all, the service. This man rudely told me to step outside so they could set up the table. So I did, but all they did was chat with one another. It was like they totally forgot I was here. After about 5-10 minutes of waiting outside in the freezing cold, the waiter finally motioned for me to come in. I was seated facing the window, and the table was on this tile "box"... I had literally no space to put my legs, so I had to adjust my angle to the side, and ended up sitting like a man with my legs wide open. I couldn't even enjoy the view outside because drapes were covering the windows, letting absolutely no sunshine in, making the restaurant looking ghastly and depressing. Next, I ordered the Olive Black Ink Pasta and the Deep-Fried Calamari. I've heard a lot of great things about this particular "squid-ink" pasta, but sadly it tasted like CRAP. I couldn't even bear the smell of it, and the taste was absolutely DISGUSTING and OUTRAGEOUS. I have never tasted anything this bad in my life. Then came the fried calamari, which was odd because it came AFTER the pasta. The calamari had absolutely no seasoning, and it tasted like fried flour. It had no crisp, and it was greasy and so oily. Then, the waiter gave us our check, and boy was I mad. He charged me 18% tips when the service was absolutely shit. In conclusion, this was the WORST dining experience of my life, and I would NOT come back ever again. read more

My gfriend and I were in Boston for marathon weekend and we were given the two thumbs up by a friend we respect to "absolutely" have a meal here. The location was not handy to our weekend plans and we figured it would not work out, but a sunny day walking around found us in the North End and lo and behold we walked right into this location. Happily we waited outside knowing it might be awhile and it was, probably 45 minutes. The food was simple and good, not great but the vibe was good and the prices reasonable. Cannot believe that my Italian beer came in a plastic cup (shameful) as did the white wine, seriously what are the owners thinking??? As an Italian I am embarrassed about this simple item. We did stuff ourselves and the meatball calamari appetizer was cool, great sauce and the clam-pasta-calamari dish I ordered was excellent, the salads were average. Staff are hard working and in a way the old fashioned, simple, small space makes for a different type of meal. Walking through part of the kitchen to use the bathroom....crazy....is that even legal? If you go here and the line up is huge...I would skip it, but if not it won't be too bad to give it your own try. read more

The Daily Catch is so good! I'm quite picky with Italian food, and have heard that the north end can have really variable quality, but The Daily Catch is a jewel. We had to wait about 30-40 minutes, but there's lots of great people watching on the street, so that didn't bother us. We were seated with others (this place is SMALL! probably not a great date place because you'll likely be sitting with strangers),but the pasta is really delicious. I had linguine with clams, and it was definitely the best I've ever had. Don't go expecting awesome service and a slow, leisurely meal, but head to Daily Catch for really wonderful pasta and seafood! read more

The best Shrimp Scampi I ever had. The home made pasta with the wine and olive oil and lemon OMG. I also never had the Calamari meatballs my new favorite thing and the stuffed clams great. I gave 1 star because of the bad service. We waited for one hour and the waitress seems not worry about how many customers are waiting outside. She won't let outside customers come in until the restaurant is completely empty. The most inefficient way to run a restaurant. The little Italy restaurant in San Francisco is much better. read more

Way overprice for the quality. The fish was overcooked and the vegetables underdone and just piled on your plate as if volume would be ok over that. No presentation. Service was slow. The whole thing kind of reminded me of a red lobster, just with high prices. That or a tourist trap that hotels recommend. read more

I really hate giving this place a 2 star since the food was arguably 4.5 stars, but I really don't think they should get away with such bad customer service. The older blonde waitress that worked on Sunday lunch 7/7/2013 was unbelievably rude to the poor couple seated next to us. We went on a Sunday afternoon just after opening and ended up waiting 75 minutes to get in. There were clean tables open but the older blonde waitress was moving so slowly that it took 10-15 minutes for her to get the orders out and begin seating people (why can't they have the busser help seat??) She looked kind of confused reading the slips and trying to figure out which food went to what table. We had a baked clam (amazing), calamari (decent enough), and squid ink pasta (was better the last time when the older Asian chef cooked it. This time the flavor just wasn't there). And this is when the drama happened - the poor couple next to us found a cigarette butt in their calamari and quietly complained to the waitress. The waitress didn't say anything and just left the calamari, cigarette butt and all on the table. Finally, after 50 minutes of the couple just sitting there, not touching their food, she came around and said "I'm sorry this happened, I've never seen it before" and never offered to take anything off the bill, make a new order or offer anything else in exchange. When they asked for the bill, the waitress yelled at them to sit tight and wait since she has customers to serve and took her sweet time going to the back register to take a breather. When the couple again asked for their check, the waitress (once again) yelled at them to just finish their food and then they'll get their check. After the 10 minutes of being yelled at by the waitress in front of all the restaurant diners, the couple said they're going to take their food to go and demanded to have the check right away. The waitress yelled at them some more to sit down and brought over a check for the full amount. The guy went over to the waitress and demanded to speak to management, and the waitress just said management wasn't there and that they'll have to call a telephone # to get their money back. The couple paid the bill and left 90% of their meal untouched in to go containers. The waitress quickly cleaned that away and pretended like nothing happened. Honestly Daily Catch, I know your food is good (for the most part, when the right chefs are cooking) and people wait for hours to get into your restaurant, but you shouldn't get away with egregiously bad customer service. Bullying your customers into paying for a fried cigarette butt and yelling at them in front of other diners is just bad practice. You really should have picked better wait staff. I don't care if the waitress is my grandma's age, you just don't yell at customers like they're garbage in front of a packed room full of diners, especially not when they've patiently waited 75 minutes and paid $90 for a fried cigarette butt and then waited another hour for an apology, a nice gesture, a new order of calamari, or just something small taken off the bill. My boyfriend and I felt awkward just being there so we quickly finished our food and left. Needless to say, we won't be coming back again thanks to the rude waitress. read more

this place is all about the food. it's no frills and divey, but i had some of the best calamari, freshest seafood, and linguine marinara i've had anywhere. for what it is and how big the portions are, the prices are actually very reasonable... especially if you go family style. i loved it. read more

Tourist Trap!!! That one star is for the fried calamari. Everything else is overated. Whats up with the 4-5 stars here??? Terrible service! They opened the restaurant whenever they wanted to. Yelp says 11:30, when you get there, it says 12:00 at their door, but they didn't open until 12:10. So we waited 40 mins to get in though we were the first few people got there waiting. The only waitress there had her friends skipped the line and let them in first though everyone else was waiting outside of the cold. Then she quickly placed their food order, had their first appertizer ready in five minutes. She ingored everyone else while she was doing that as if these two were the only customers there. But the room was packed! Hello??? Our order wasnt even placed when these two friends of hers got their bill checked and walked out of the door. How ridiculous!! The worst experience ever!!! The waiter gave us a bill with 20% tip included. And we ask why, he told us because he didn't trust us. He yelled at us and said you are fou and tell us to get out of the place. We still left tips but definitely not 20%. I understand that we are international students but we study in USA for three years in NY. We know what to do with the tips. He is just the most disgusting man I've ever seen in my life. We ended up in this restaurant called the Daily Catch and it was simply put a very genuine local experience. Little Italy in Boston is truly like an Italian neighborhood (I can say that, I've been there). Brick buildings with little Mom & Pop shops less than 50 sq. ft. side by side with signs as old as the dishes that each restaurant serves in their short menus. Mike had the Putanesca (black pasta with grilled shrimp), David had the halibut special, Steven had some normal dish like shrimp scampi and I had the Anglio Olio (ground squid on black pasta with garlic & olive oil). I had everyone try my dish and mine was hands down the envy of everyone on the table, I was soooo happy with my food that I enjoyed every single bite. I'm sure by the time we left that little hole in the wall (there were only about 5 tables total) my breath smelled of garlic and our clothes of everything that was pan-seared. This place is so tiny that the kitchen was literally a part of the space. I was an arm's width away from the stove and I sat happily in my chair with a nice plastic cup of white wine devouring my new love for black ink pasta and ground calamari. I don't believe anyone who has ever visited this old restaurant walk out unsatisfied. read more

The food is good and prices are reasonable, but there are so many options in North End that it seems crazy that anyone would want to wait more than 15 min. for this place. I have always liked this place but something has happened there and this is a warning to everyone that used to go here and like it: The main problem is the staff. The chef (who has not been there on any of my 10 or so previous visits) is a big sweaty guy with a very bad attitude. This is a small place and anything the chef says will be heard by the whole room. When we approached our table he complained and grunted "I wish you were more than 3, this way one seat will be empty" or something like that. I didn't know what to say... After we sat down we realized that the chef was wearing earplugs (we understand why!). Since he couldn't hear a thing in there, he didn't know how much noise he was making. He hit every pot and pan with his metal tools so hard that me and my friend startled and had to cover our ears during the entire meal. The banging was crazy loud. I live in the city and use the green line every day so I am surrounded by noise all the time. This, however, was something beyond anything I have experienced. The bad part is that he was banging the metal dishes and tools in an angry manner, as if he was mad and wanted to give everyone a hard time; behaving like a 3-year-old. The service was very slow this night but the guy who served us was nice and brought us everything we needed. The sad part is that the chef was yelling at the waiter and the yelling and banging made it very unpleasant. It doesn't end there. The busboy was making an incredible noise by throwing metal dishes against each other. I guess that is why the chef was wearing earplugs in the first place..... The noise from the busboy was constant and only during a couple of seconds here and there it was quiet. When it got quiet in the room, it was evident that nobody was talking in there. It was just not possible to have a conversation. In combination with the crazy busboy and chef, some very high energy classical music was playing in loudspeakers in the room. When it finally got quiet for a couple of seconds, the music would underline the stress and anxiety of this place. I saw people turning their heads towards the chef the entire time during the meal, trying to figure out what on earth he was doing! In summary, the food is OK here but the dining experience is horrible. I used to love this place for its atmosphere but now it is run by people who seem to hate their customers. The staff looked dirty and sweaty. Food is not like it used to be either. The cash only requirement is annoying. I will not go back there in a very long time. read more

This place has been a favorite of mine for years. Most times I have gone there on dates, but my absolute favorite time is when I go with friends. It is now an annual day after Thanksgiving event. I consider it my Black Friday excursion, as I ALWAYS get the black pasta with alfredo sauce.........to die for. My friends and I start off with the calamari meatballs. We share like four orders of them and they have the same consistency with every bite. Every one of us orders something different and then we share it all. There has not been any dish that I have not totally enjoyed. Their lobsta diablo is awesome and is shared by two people, well that's if they like to share LOL This year one of my friends got the shrimp scampi and we should have ordered more, it was just that scrumptious. We were not rushed and our waiter was absolutely wonderful. I give this place ten stars..................then go down the street to Mike's pastry if you have room for dessert.........but that is another review for another time. Enjoy! read more

Why do I give it only 2 stars? Let me try giving a compliment sandwich. Good: 1. The seafood is very, very fresh. 2. The Fried Calamari is fried perfectly, crisp crunchy batter and delicious calamari. 3. The Shrimp White Linguine, Clam White Linguine was flavorful. Bad: 1. The waiter is a racist. My cousin (who works in the F&B business) asked if the squid ink pasta "was supposed to be this chewy", and he replied "Yes of course, it's hand made. It's pasta you know, it's not chinese noodles", and even went back to his corner of the room where the cash register is and scoffed/laughed at us, repeating once more to the chef that "they asked if it's supposed to be chewy." (We asked if it's supposed to be THIS chewy, because it was bordering on hard.) Of course I could not tolerate it, this being my first racist encounter after 3 years in the US and I made sure he knew he was being a racist, and to stop being insular thinking that Asians have not tasted pasta before. Both the chef (ASIAN!!) and the waiter looked obviously embarrassed, and proceeded with their tasks. Waiter also upped his service with more-than-frequent water refills. We left shortly after. 2. If their famed squid ink pasta was then "al dente', then the other two plates must have been overcooked by their standards. 3. The linguine was flavorful, the squid ink aglio olio was lack-lustre. This coming from a squid ink pasta and a aglio olio fan. 4. To be very fair, come if you want fresh seafood, but I don't think it's worth the wait if it's as long as what the other comments have warned against. We came early on a weekday as advised by a friend and there were no lines even when we left at 530. Try Giacamo's instead. Conclusion: 1. Fresh seafood 2. Ok pasta. 3. That waiter dude, please listen to feedback from your customers, and grow up. Your racist comment was completely uncalled for and this insularity is ironic for an American and Asian-run Italian restaurant. read more

Tiny little place, but the wait is worth it! We shared a small fried calamari, an appetizer sized aglio olio, and the monkfish marsala over linguine. Everything came soon after we sat down, and was perfectly cooked (pasta was al dente, as it should be). Terrible customer service. elderly woman was lone server. When asked simply if we could place orders, was told that she was coming around to take orders which is ok. She also told us to "be patient" with a "jeez." We also tried to order scallops and she didn't understand our order initially. However instead of clarifying out order with us, she told the chef that "we didn't know what we want" meanwhile as we sat within hearing distance of this interaction.
