Happened to see this place riding down the street, stopped in for late breakfast on a Sunday. Seated right away, from there downhill. I ordered an veggie omelet with home fries, specifically requesting fried onions in the home fries. Waitress said, they come cooked that way. Not being sure I was understood, I repeated, onions in the home fries, she said ok. No fried onions in home fires, and by the time she came back to check on us it wasn't worth sending my plate back. When she did return, I asked for a side order of bacon, never came. Overall the breakfast was ok, the service was sorely lacking. One of my friends recommended this place. We were looking for a place to grab a cup of coffee and a snack before heading to our next destination. The food is okay. Nothing to rave about. Great NYC diner for those late night/early morning food adventures. Not only did we enjoy our food but we also enjoyed the company of our waiter. He was constantly checking on us to make sure that we were good and providing us with updates on the food. Our waiter was also very funny and kept us entertained as we waited for the food. There is a ton of variety to choose from on the menu- wether you're feeling like having breakfast style or dinner style, there's so much to choose from. The OJ was fresh squeezed, the coffee was diner quality and the tea a Lipton Tea Bag (even though the menu indicates House Special Tea). We ordered an array of breakfast items from scrambled eggs, omelettes to french toast.They all came with potatoes and a choice of toast. Each dish delivered a solid breakfast. We were in the hunt for a quick breakfast bite after I got off the night shift, so we strolled into this place which was pretty close by. I find it hard to mess up breakfast food, so im usually pretty liberal with my choices. We ordered a stack of pancakes, corn beef hash, hash browns and we split scrambled eggs. To be honest I was not impressed at all, the corn beef hash was too salty and somewhat mushy. The hash browns had no flavor and lacked consistency, some pieces were crispy and some pieces were soft. The eggs were okay, nothing too exciting; as were the pancakes. Breakfast platters run from around $15 and up. So, our first time making a day of visiting Central Park post-pandemic. We were going to take bagels out to the park for brunch, but it was drizzling rain that day and the lines in the bagel shops were long. Even though still hesitant about indoor dining anywhere, we happened across The Flame Diner in the Westside which was open for indoor dining, and decided to get brunch there. A typical NYC diner, functional and not anything to rave about, but a welcome respite for us that morning. They had plexiglass between all the booths inside, and waitstaff wore masks. We wore our masks unless eating even though vaccinated, and felt somewhat safe. Still getting adjusted.... I got scrambled eggs with potatoes and toast. The eggs were fluffy and not dry. The potatoes were not overly crisp or seasoned in some funky way, just basic potatoes browned a little on the flat top with a touch of onion. My toast was fine, and came with a small plate of those tiny packages of grape jelly and butter, and the waiter smiled at me when he put them down on the table. It was like he knew....how I miss a little plate of tiny packages of jelly and butter, the hallmark of many a diner and road trip! Just that tiny bit of normalcy that we are all craving right now. read more

I asked politely for the correct burger to be remade, which states 16.95 on the menu plus $3.00 for bacon added, which somehow came out to $22. Be mindful and watch your food and receipts. In the middle of the hustle and bustle of midtown is The Flame a restaurant with a diner-like menu, a hard working staff and top notch food. Although we arrived at 11am on a Saturday, my party of 4 was quickly seated and water served as we perused the diner size menu. All around us patrons were eating a variety of brunch or lunch dishes many of whom appeared to not be first timers. As I had a marathon the next morning I kept it simple - Egg white omelette with grilled vegetables, mixed greens and dry multi grain toast rounded out with a fruit bowl. Service was prompt and in no time our meals were brought out. Not greasy or oily.,my omelette was chock full of vegetables and my two pieces of toast helped fill in the remaining cracks. I even snuck a few of Mark C. 's sweet potato fries and they were crispy and decedent. Although the toast was served with grape jelly the waiter was happy to bring over marmalade when asked. Water glasses were constantly filled and our plates were quickly cleared by bus boys as soon as we were done. The space is a bit cramped (there were a lot of diners in their small space) but waiters and waitresses deftly maneuvered among each other and the patrons. They have only one bathroom so be prepared to wait if you happen to drink to much water. The staff turns over tables quickly but I never felt rushed to leave and lingered over that last glass of water. I like this diner and go there occasionally as I live in the neighborhood. The staff has always been very friendly and nice. It's a comfortable place to sit down and it's in a great neighborhood in midtown west. I usually just order an egg salad sandwich on whole wheat toast with lettuce and tomato. It always is fresh and hits the spot. The hamburgers are excellent, too. There is no need to go to one of those trendy, crowded burger joints when The Flame serves ''em up so delicious. I order mine medium rare and the last one I got was cooked perfectly. The French fries were excellent, too, honestly.... Thin like McDonald's but better.
