It's hard to rate this place because while it was definitely amazing fish & chips it made my hubby's stomach hurt and mine feel greasy. If you eat a lot of fried foods maybe this won't affect you. We ordered the large cod and haddock because we thought the regular wouldn't be enough. We should've ordered the regular though because it was so much food especially since its all fried. GO: large and fresh fish filets fried to perfection. Good fries. You have to salt it yourself though, there's no initial flavor to the fish & chips. Big portions. Really yummy fish and chips!!! We had a regular order (comes with one piece of fried fish) of the haddock. The outside is perfectly crispy and golden. And the chips were thick pieces of potato and fried to a perfect consistency - not too mushy. AND it's all made by a guy with a cool Scottish accent! I also noticed on the menu that he had mushy peas on the menu which I really like, so if I ever come back to Portland, I will get more fish and chips, with a side order of the mushy peas. This is like a food truck marathon day for me so pardon me if my succeeding reviews are all about food trucks. Anyway, the fish is cooked perfectly. The batter is airy and crunchy, just how it should be done. The fries are just ok, not a big fan. The owner (I'm assuming he is the owner coz he sounded scottish) is very courteous. There were moments though that I didn't understand him at first ..... then I thought I did then I second guessed myself .....then eventually I got it. So it was probably me, not him. The only disappointment for me is the portion. I expected to get 2 pieces of fish for a regular order but I was sad to see only one lonely fish in front of me. Originally from the UK, I grew up on some of the best fish & chips available. The Frying Scotsman's fish & chips are EASILY as good, if not better, than anything I recall growing up. All the fish are fresh fillets hand battered TO ORDER.....delicate taste, perfectly cooked interior & a crispy golden brown 'shell' exterior....quality! The chips are AS THEY SHOULD BE....hand cut, 'chunky' sized, cooked to perfection with light, ever so slight 'chewy' interior texture & golden brown crispy exteriors. Don't let the naysayers fool you into thinking that a chip shop, which primarily cooks with bubbling, boiling, oil, isn't supposed to be slightly greasy, that's part of the experience, besides, there's a reason they have malt vinegar on the counter, it cuts the greasy flavor. For those griping about the chips, stop expecting McDonald's shoestring french fries, these are fresher anyway. Probably better for you in the long run as well. The fish, cod is tried and true English fare, haddock is as Scottish a choice as haggis and a dram or two of Scotch, halibut is the Pacific answer to the Atlantic cod, and Mahi-Mahi is an inspired twist on the traditional cold water whitefish. I have yet to sample their take on bangers or haggis, though it's doubtful a proud scotsman would tarnish those, yes they offer slaw and tartar but those are more American than Scottish. Drinks, there's tea, and American sodas, but if you want a truly Scottish drink, go with the one made from girders, Scotland's other national drink, Irn-Bru. read more

Delicious fish and chips! My favorite in Portland. I have been several times now, I have always gotten the haddock and it's perfect every time. Takes me right back to eating fish and chips in Scotland! The chips are also the thicker traditional style chips rather than more American style fries. I like that there's HP sauce for dipping them. This is the most authentic fish and chips food chariot that I've found in the Northwest and this side of Vancouver, B.C. The owner chef knows his business, is at home in his kitchen, enjoys conversations if not swamped with orders, and remains a genuine human being! As a vegetarian I occasionally need extra protein and this is the place that restores that craving. I grew up on, under an in the Chesapeake Bay, the Atlantic and the river systems so seafood is what I sometimes miss the most. I tried The Frying Scotsman years ago when it was downtown Portland but that experience wasn't enough to warrant the hassle of going back. Now that it's moved to BG's, I thought it was time to give it another try. It actually took multiple visits to find it open but I've finally been able to kill my curiosity and know that I haven't missed much all these years. I'm not sure what to base my rating on so let's go with this: Fish and chips in general - Tough call, better than most places but not crave worthy like truly great fish and chips. Both the fish and potato hunks were quite bland but they were fresh. A reluctant 4 stars because they *are* better than average. Fish and chips on the west side - 5 stars because there apparently aren't any good fish and chips on the west side. And I've been looking. Scottish fish and chips - For all I know these could be 10 stars on that scale but I'm in Oregon and don't know what that is. Location / convenience / service - I'll lump these together for 5 stars. Generally plenty of free parking nearby and BGs is a nice pod - perhaps the nicest food cart pod I've ever been to. Because of the nearby parking and fast service, you can get in and out quickly. Once I placed my order it was only 7-ish minutes until it was served. The guy that took my order was pleasant and personable and that's all anyone can expect. Portion size - 5 stars. The piece of fish in a "regular" order is big and impressive looking. Plenty for one person, for sure. And the amount of included potato hunks is borderline excessive. Back to the part of both being rather bland though, you probably won't find yourself wanting more of either and in fact, chances are you'll toss a bunch of the chips/fries/potato hunks. The serving of coleslaw is rather skimpy but most people throw it away so you can't hold the portion size of this against 'em. Value - 5 stars. See portion size above. When compared to what others charge for fish and chips, and those places probably aren't as good as this one, the prices here seem quite good by comparison. Hours - 2 stars. Your mileage may vary on this one, but if the only time you can visit is for dinner or on weekends, you're apt to find it closed. I get that this is a locally owned cart, and everyone deserves time off, but if you're in the restaurant business, you should consider being open when people actually eat their meals. Quality - In all fairness, 5 stars. We're only talking freshness with this one. The fish is served so hot, not only will you burn the inside of your mouth, you'll probably also burn your fingers. The fish seemed fresh off the boat and it's definitely battered to order. I saw a bag of potatoes inside the open side door so you know the chips are hand cut. The coleslaw seemed homemade, not sure about the tarter sauce but maybe it's homemade, too. (The coleslaw was good but again, bland. The tarter sauce is decent.) All things really do point to The Frying Scotsman deserving 4 or even 5 stars but the fact remains that the fish and chips are bland. Maybe that's how the Scot's like 'em but my American taste buds are looking for a bit more flavor. We've tried quite a few fish n' chips from different restaurants in the Pacific Northwest, generally they're disappointing to a mediocre level of satisfying. I was so happy to finally try the Frying Scotsman! They absolutely did not disappoint! I had the large cod, the bf got the large snapper. I was so full I was able to save one piece for lunch the next day, and it was still just as delicious! I appreciated the generous portions of fries and super chunky pieces of fish. We even had enough to share some fries with the birds. The fish was fried to absolute perfection. It had that lovely crispy crunch as you bit into it, and then it melted in your mouth. It is a greasy food, but not overly so. I would be sure to grab a few napkins though. Be sure to note that this is a food truck. It's part of one of the fun cartopia's on the west side of the river. Most people probably like a great deal of batter on their fish, so this would be perfect. I prefer my fish to be more lightly battered. I did appreciate that the wonderful man preparing my meal noted that he does not salt the fish, but had salt available for those who prefer their fried fish salted. The Frying Scotsman serves up large portions of excellent fish and chips. Simple and delicious. This little cart offers a good variety of options to choose from, but the standard dish remains the same--fried fish and French fries. I usually get the haddock, though I've had the cod before, too. Today, I ordered the regular fried haddock and chips. While I expected it to be a small lunch, as I hadn't ordered the large, I was mistaken. I was served one large piece of fish and once small piece, as well as a huge pile of chips. Definitely enough for a meal, unless you're truly starving. Considering just how good a portion of fish and chips it is, it's well worth the $9.50. The haddock was flaky and white, and perfectly cocooned in a light, crispy batter. While it definitely had that fresh-from-the-fryer taste, it wasn't greasy at all. It tasted as fresh as can be, mild, but still the batter's equal in making up the flavor. I was also impressed by how the battered exterior stayed intact as I ate the fish--never did it wind up coming off in large swaths, the way it does in some other places. The batter also nicely absorbed the malt vinegar and salt I poured on the fish. The chips were thick, cut the way I've seen at chippies in London. Crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, every single one of these chips was in the Goldilocks zone. Like the fish, they took the salt and vinegar well. I wound up reapplying both at one point throughout my lunch, as I wanted a little more, and the flavor of the potatoes still came through. I've also had the mushy peas here a couple times, and can vouch for them. I didn't get them this time, but if you're looking for even more pure comfort food and have a couple extra bucks, they're a good option. The counter at the Frying Scotsman features malt vinegar, salt, and HP sauce. Help yourself--in order to allow you to season your meal to taste, they don't put anything on beforehand, save maybe a little salt. While there's no seating area, if they're not too busy, the counter also makes a decent table, if you're down to eat standing up. This also allows you to re-up your condiments.
