Second time here, second time disappointed. Both times we have only gotten drinks, and not cared for them. The menu doesn't look great, but to be fair, we haven't actually had the food. The General Public is usually reliable, as far as food and drink options, quality and service go. So, my expectations seemed to be in line, based on previous dining experiences here. However, this was not the case today. And I do have to add, I have worked in customer service, including food service in the past. I do not like to complain, and I don't send food back. I know it's a hard job and I have a great deal of appreciation for restaurant servers. I always make sure to be kind, friendly and tip well. I work hard too and don't mind paying well for a delicious meal and great service. I also don't write reviews that often, but this needed to be shared. It was not busy when I arrived to have lunch. I informed the very pleasant greeter/host that I would have another person joining me and was seated at a table for two. Everything started to go downhill when the server came to take my drink order. Very flat, no hello, no eye contact, just "want anything to drink?" Ok... When she brought my cocktail, she spilled a substantial amount of it across the table when she set it down. Not a big deal, accidents happen, but she just said, "sorry about that" and walked away with no attempt to clean the table or bring napkins or remedy the situation in any way. I was just left sitting there with a wet table. After waiting a few minutes with my wet table, I wound up grabbing a cloth napkin from another table nearby and just cleaned it myself. She then came to take my food order and I let her know I was still waiting for my friend to join me but she would be there soon. She seemed very irritated/surprised at this, although I did say party of two when I arrived, so not sure what the frustration was about. The abrupt interactions just felt rude and odd overall, and not warranted. I know we all have bad days, which I can totally understand, but I noticed she was very friendly, smiling and conversational with other tables nearby. So again, not sure what I could have done to deserve the cold shoulder treatment. Anyway, my friend arrived and we ordered our food. I got the Harvest Bowl with added salmon. All was good, except the salmon. First of all, it was a pretty small piece. I took two bites total, one from each end, because I found the inside was completely raw. I know that salmon can be cooked at different preference levels, but this was not rare - it was raw inside. I let my awesome server know while she was walking by ignoring me and her reply was, "it's seared, that's how they cook it. It's rare inside." I told her I wish I would have known that was the only option when I ordered it, and she told me I should have asked. Wow ok...and then, "We can put it back on the grill if you want." I told her, "no thank you, that's ok I just don't want it at all anymore." I was pretty upset and just lost my appetite at that point. Also, doesn't that seem kind of gross to put something I already took a bite of back on the grill with other people's food? I have never been served salmon like this in my whole life, and for it to supposedly have been seared, it did not have a crispy skin at all. Just a big undercooked fail is what they served me and wanted me to be happy about it. The friendly gentleman host walked by and asked if everything was ok. I told him, "yes, except the salmon. It's pretty raw inside." He said that I wasn't the first one to complain about the salmon that day, and that they have a new cook. But he also said that it is seared and it's supposed to be that way. And that I must have liked it because I was eating it. (I wasn't) He also asked if I wanted to get it cooked more. I said again that I just don't want it or anything else at all, and he told me that there are other substitutes I could have added like chicken or shrimp. While he was talking to me, our delightful server yelled twice across the room at him, "DOOR!", referring to guests coming in I guess. This was just so unprofessional, tacky and rude. Especially if she was not that busy herself, and he seemed to be trying to help (even if it really didn't.) Overall, such a disappointing experience. I couldn't wait to leave. Customer service means making the effort to set things right, not just giving useless excuses. The offer to just cook it more and tell me I should have known beforehand does not make it right. A simple apology would have made a huge difference. I am not likely to return, and I know no one cares. So if you have low expectations, want to feel like an inconvenience or just want to acquire a possible parasite from eating raw salmon, then this is the place for you. read more

Stuffed mushrooms, awesome in the green chili gravy. Daily chef tots were a disappointment. Ore-Ida tots with bacon, cheese and sour cream. I was hoping for hand made tots at least. However the green chili gravy made the loaded tots good. The gravy would make a shoe great though. Had a Caesar salad, extra creamy dressing, needed more acid. I assume they knew because they included a slice of lemon on the plate. Try some Red Wine vinegar in your dressing. I promise it will be better. I would go back. Definitely order the stuffed mushrooms and some other options. Staff is very courteous, props to them and their training. Sat outside and the porch was very nice. read more

Heard of this spot, but this was the 1st time I checked it out. It did not disappoint. Firstly, the staff was very friendly and knew their menu very well. Based on Sarah's (waiterss) recommendation, my daughter got the Green Chile Grilled Cheese, and I had the Ribeye Steak Sandwich. Believe me when I tell you, they were both delicious. I took a bite of the grilled cheese sandwich and almost didn't give it back to her. The only reason I did is because the steak sandwich was just as good. To finish off the meal, Sarah suggested the lemon mousse and blueberry compote. Once again, she was spot on. It was a light and sweet dessert that finished the meal perfectly. All the dishes we had here were scrumptious! Each dish had its own unique signature taste and/or texture unfamiliar to us. For example their chicken wings had this light, fluffy batter with a hint of sweetness to it that automatically made it an instant comfort food. None of the dishes we ordered disappointed us. I'm really looking forward to going back again to have more and try their other culinary delights. Their cooks certainly knew what they were doing in the kitchen. We enjoyed it so much that we actually requested to speak with the manager to commend the chef and his staff. We went in as we were hopping around checking everything out, and the drinks sounded good so we sat and relaxed on the outside patio, which was pretty cool, but definitely made for one on one date nights, and no groups! We got oysters, which were so boring. And We agreed our roasted Brussels sprouts came out of a bag of frozen Brussels sprouts, do not even try them! Celebrated 34 trips around the sun with brunch at GP! The $1 mimosas on the weekends made this an easy YES! Started our food tour with a mimo with pineapple juice and a Bloody Mary. The Bloody Mary was ehhhh but the champs saved the brunch! The smoked salmon and sun-dried tomato relish was AMAZING! Noshed on the chicken & frites. The frites, the F R I T E S- wow! Great flavor and crispy the chicken was moist and delish. When you are at GP, you have to get the birthday cake! A sweet concoction that leaves an instant smile on your face! We've been her before once, a few years ago (we live in Austin). We returned because we loved the atmosphere, and once again it did not disappoint. Lulu greeted us as soon as we sat the bar, told us where to find the menu, specials, and was very accommodating throughout the meal, even with a busy turnout. We got the Shrimp and Avocado Salad, Avocado Toast, and Crab Hushpuppies. Crab Hushpuppies are killer - crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside! A fave dish. The good: REALLY good happy hour prices from 3pm to 6pm M thru F. EVERY single drink or beer is priced as follows during happy hour: $3 at 3pm $4 at 4pm $5 at 5pm And then at 6pm, it's back to full price - WOMP, WOMP, WOMP... Some of their whiskeys are over $20, so considering this, their happy hour is really a great deal (price wise that is). Check their online menu for drink prices and you'll see what a bargain their happy hour deals are. They also have five or six small appetizers on special during happy hour. I've had several of the apps and they were all good. The entrees mainly consist of burgers, sandwiches, and salads. They have a couple of other entrees, like steak, shrimp, and chicken plates, but not a whole lot. Now here comes the bad: I've been here a few times for happy hour and every single time, the service flat out sucks! It seems like they slow roll it on purpose, so you don't get your next drink until the price goes up - seriously. So, take my advice. Order a drink, and when the server delivers it, order your next drink. If you're lucky it will show up shortly after you finish your first drink. It really is that bad. I've even experienced attitude a couple of times from some of the servers. The service is SO bad during happy hour that I want to give them only one star, but the drink prices cause me to bump it up to 2 stars. read more

(Brunch Review) I'm trying to branch out from usual brunch spots and decided to give the General Public's brunch offerings a try. It wasn't too busy for a Sunday at 11:30 so we opted to relax and sit on the patio and bask in the sun while enjoying some mimosas. For my meal I wanted something simple so I opted to order a few side items a la carte and essentially build my own breakfast plate. What resulted was the bacon, breakfast sausage, sourdough toast with blackberry honey, and the hash au gratin. Everything was tasty and the blackberry honey was absolutely superb. I was a little disappointed to find the hash au gratin potatoes covered in green onions when it was served-something that wasn't included in the menu description-otherwise I would not have ordered this item. It resulted in me picking at the item more than eating it. To cap the meal off I ordered the birthday cake for dessert which may have actually ended up being my favorite item. The cake was moist and the buttercream frosting with sprinkles the best! Based on this experience this wouldn't be on top brunch spots in San Antonio but I'll definitely be coming back to give their happy hour and regular menu items a try. read more

Went to the GP for restaurant week. I had the hush puppies, salmon and the brownie parfait. I enjoyed everything. Definitely enjoy the honey butter with the hush puppies.... They make the dish. The salmon is the star of the show! It is outstanding and easily some of the best Sam and I have ever had in my life. Very juicy and delicious. Dessert was pretty good. I'd been aware of The General Public for a while and had always wanted to go. But for some reason or another I just never went. I found out recently the folks who own The Rustic also own Bowl & Barrel and The General Public, and I knew I finally had to come to The General Public to complete the trifecta review series. The interior is bangin'. I love the mounted buck with the hipster glasses. The overall vibe and feel is similar to Bowl & Barrel, and less rustic than, well, The Rustic. Our server was super charming and charismatic. More than once he quipped, "I like your style," when I'd make a comment. I ordered a mimosa (WHICH WAS $1 I SEE YOU GUYS COMPETING AGAINST MASH'D), coffee (served in a French Press), and the steel cut oats... and a side of toast with blackberry honey. Guys. Guys, I can't even begin to describe how a simple bowl of oats can be so decadent and satisfying. It was ridiculous. There is a very heavy taste of butter, which went amazingly well with the cream and dried fruit. I never want to eat oatmeal any other way. I took the rest to go and I actually mixed in the blackberry honey into the oatmeal and that was a very smart move on my end, because that was also delicious. My sister had the Green Chile Grilled Cheese and she flat out said it was better than grilled cheesers she's had at other restaurants that included barbacoa, brisket, or carne guisada in them. And I got a bite of it, so I had to agree wholeheartedly with her conclusion. It was the bomb.com. My brother in law ordered the extremely photogenic Sunny Enchiladas. Since I gave up on red meat, I admired from afar. He ate the whole thing--a testament to how delicious it must have been. The General Public met and surpassed all my expectations with their service and food and it's easily my top pick of the three establishments. All three are great in their own way, but I think The General Public "gets" me more, and is definitely a spot I want to return to soon. read more

Came here for a little bday get together for a buddy. Location is awesome, right in the heart of the Rim. Service was fairly slow and seemed a bit out of sorts for not being busy at all. They were playing music in restaurant, which was nice but it was a bit loud and made it a bit hard to chat across the table. A couple of people at our table ordered things they were out of too, which happens, but made for ordering something you may have not been excited about. I ordered an old fashioned and it was the smallest cocktail I've ever had - very disappointed for the price charged for it. My wife ordered the chicken Cesar salad and claims it might be the best Cesar salad she's had. I had the green chili grilled cheese and it was absolutely awesome!
