The first and OG Hat location! I've only been here once, I grew up around the Rancho Cucamonga location. I would say between these 2 locations, The Hat is consistent - always serving giant portions and serving fresh and good quality fast food (as good of quality that fast food can be). When you come here, you're definitely getting your money's worth because anything you get will nearly be impossible to finish by yourself. Come with an appetite or bring a friend and share (which will be hard to do because the chili fries and burgers are so good). I love that this location has horchata, this is something that the Rancho location doesn't do. Pro-tip: the pastrami sandwich comes with so much pastrami that you can even take some off and put it on top of your chili fries - so you don't have to order pastrami chili fries! read more

It appears that they fry frozen fries but it's the chili that makes it soooo amazing! This location is at the corner of a street and has a "street" vendor feel. I was in the area, and drove by the Hat , so I decided to get a pastrami sandwich, I have been to this location plenty of times over the years, I know of this place because my parents brought me here when I was a kid, and not much has changed here except for the size of the sandwich, I remember coming here and would order a pastrami sandwich, and a drink and could only finish half of the sandwich because It be was large and overflowing with pastrami meat, but today the sandwich was so small and hardly any meat, it was so sad that I finished the hole sandwich and was still hungry, I guess shrink-flation has hit this place, I also saw they measured fries in a metal container before they placed them in the bag, so sad, what happened here, it used to be a great place with good food and a great value. A 626 Classic, huge portions of food cooked quickly to order. Whatever you order, make sure you bring an appetite cause the portions are huge here. The classic items to get are of course any of their burgers or pastrami sandwiches, or if you're indecisive a pastrami burger (they're all good in their own different way.) Also you have to order the pastrami chili cheese fries, oooh boy you're most likely gonna have left overs after that but if you don't then I salute you. A sandwich here and an order of the pastarami chili cheese fries is massive amount of food. Perfect for sharing or not if you're brave. Make sure to grab some pickled peppers to go! The 1st time I had The Hat I was not impressed. I gave it a 2nd chance and tried this location since my GF was really craving fries. I got their Pastrami Burger and their Chili Fries. This location for some reason tasted much better and the service was much nicer. The food isn't the cheapest but the portions are incredibly big. We could've shared the fries with 2 other people for sure. They have their own lot and limited seating outdoors. Watch out for flies! read more

SERVICE | I'd say the service was pretty standard - not super quick, but not extremely slow. It took about 10 minutes for our order to come out. There were quite a few people there for 12:00AM on a Sunday night. The employees were friendly, so that always makes for a good time! ENVIRONMENT | The shop itself is located on a corner. There's only walk-up service, so you'll have to order your food and wait on foot. There's outdoor seating under a roof so you can go in on your drunchies/munchies. FOOD | BOMB. We ordered the Pastrami Chili Fries, and it was dank. We shared it between 4 people - this was a good decision because of how indulgent this meal is. There was a good ratio of chili - pastrami - fries so it made for a delicious bite each time. The orange bang was surprising! I enjoyed the subtle ness of it. I would probably compare it more to a melted creamsicle than your typical orange soda. I heard this place was pretty well known in SoCal, and it's for good reason. The price isn't super cheap, but it's definitely worth! Since it's open pretty late, you can get your cravings pretty much anytime. I'll for sure head back next time I'm in the area. read more

The OG location that started it all, The Hat in Alhambra is an old school food stand, complete with walk-up windows for ordering & pick up, along with a covered patio dining area. For my inaugural visit, I pondered whether to order their famous pastrami dip or go with their wet fries. I've read how their servings of fries are quite generous, and being how I try not to eat bread, I thought an order of loaded wet fries was that particular day's calling. Wet fries w/ added pastrami, tomatoes, pickles & mustard- Holy crap! It looks like a food challenge! I thought the chatter about portions were simply hyperbole, like a tall tale being altered with exaggerations until the details became comical. But, alas, I wasn't prepared for what lied before me. I watched my order prepared right before my very eyes. From thick fries fresh from the fryer, to the slathering of savory brown gravy, the addition of tender, juicy pastrami, to the addition of a pound of dill pickle slices & tomatoes, to the cherry on top being a delicious dollop of mustard, I saw the assemblage of this calorie-busting behemoth from birth to readiness graduation. The customers after me marveled at the huge portions of my loaded wet fries being prepared, which, like a proud parent, I boasted "Yeah, that's mine." After laying claim to a table, I dug into my gargantuan meal. Each bite, wondrous & delightful. The fries had the perfect thickness to handle the weight of all that smothered them. The gravy salty & creamy. The pastrami wonderfully fatty. The amount of pickles seemed almost ridiculous. After 5 minutes of going at it, the loaded wet fries seemed like I hardly put a dent in them. They mocked me, saying "Is that the best you got, bub?" I did my best to devour the most I could, knowing I'd have to take this monstrosity home to await it's final fate later on for dinner. Besides the usual condiments, all you can grab whole chili peppers are a must if you're a heat lover. They're a perfect compliment to the copious amounts of food at The Hat. Service was good. Ordering at the window was quick, and I didn't wait long for my fries to be ready. Ample tables to dine at, with parking in a private lot. The Hat is conveniently located minutes north of the 10 freeway at the intersection of Valley & Garfield. Hunger need not show it's ugly head here. The Hat serves ginormous amounts of food quickly for the famished masses. I managed to finish my loaded wet fries after 2 meals. This coming from a guy with a healthy appetite. I'd imagine some might go a whole day to accomplish that. Of course, sharing would be a good idea, but I'm not into that. I want this baby all to myself. My first visit here, and I see why The Hat is a beloved SGV institution. If I'm in the area again, and I don't care about calories & BMI, then I'm definitely dropping by for another go at The Hat. You can call in and order for pick up , and they are always on top of it. They'll definitely have it ready by the time you get there. No delay. They're also very friendly and efficient. Was in the mood for pastrami and had always driven by this spot in Alhambra. The experience is a blast from the past, ordering from a shack window that is straight out of the 60's. The service was friendly and very fast. The food itself was quite tasty. The chili cheese fries were around $7 but they gave enough to feed a family of four. The fries weren't very crispy but the chili flavor was great. 4/5 The pastrami dip was peppery and fairly packed with meat. My last three visits to The Hat (Rosemead location and Alhambra location were both underwhelming to say the least. I have been a long time patron of The Hat at their various L.A. locations, and my last 3 visit have been disappointing. No longer did i get the hefty sized sandwich with juicy pastrami falling out the sides as you lift to eat it. So much pastrami meat you had to be sure to grab a plastic fork from the counter because you would need it to eat all the extra pastrami that fell out. Instead i got served something the sized I'd expect at "Mr. Ordinary's Burger Stand". Nothing to see here folks, move along. As a L.A. native who KNOWS The Hat and has patronized their business for many many years, i now view them with disappointment & skepticism. Am i gonna spend $15 to $20 bucks for a drink, fries, and a pastrami only to be once again disappointed when I unwrapped the sandwich and see yet another skimpy "budget sized" Jr. pastrami sandwich ? What is this, Burger King's version Pastrami? The food is always hot, flavorful and fresh. I would recommend getting the fries well done, as they can sometimes be undercooked or a little old, meaning they have lost their fried crunchiness. The combos here are what I would say is the best deal, and they offer a fairly wide selection of burgers. While this place was exceptionally cheap when I was a kid, the prices are catching up to today's inflation, but are still very reasonable.
