Tried this place out today. Not impressed! I don't understand on how this place is so busy, Maybe it was a Sunday. Our server was average...She was not very attentive in filling coffee etc.....Now on to the food. Egg Benedict tasted like a bad Dennys. Pancake was very dense and not fluffy. I had to spit out the muffin because it tasted like raw cookie dough! The sandwich wrap was like leather for the tortilla......I don't understand on how this place gets business and it is higher priced. read more

I had the honor of being invited to a soft opening for lunch. My friend and I know the new chef on board. This is an unfamiliar part of Edina that gets me confused. Just off the 50th St. exit, a singular building on a hilltop. It's very attractive, and we sat on a very brightly lit enclosed porch. My server Rochelle was excellent. I started with a nicely strong brewed iced tea, while waiting. Lent is another whole month for me, so I ordered the tuna melt. It comes on Pumpernickel from Main Street Bakery. I haven't been here yet but I know of it's strong wholesale reputation. So it was my first time having it. The entire sandwich is excellent. Looking forward to trying the others. My friend enjoyed her Newberry open face turkey and cranberry melt. We shared a caesar salad. This was a miss. You could hardly taste the dressing, and to see it you will not be impressed. The other flop was the side of cole slaw. However there are plenty of menu items I'm dying to try. Such as all the daily dinner specials. As I was walking out I spotted an amazing looking french onion soup. I noticed they serve breakfast daily. I understand the weekends, not sure if this location is a draw for it during the week. I really want to give this a better rating as the wife of the owner is a long-lost, estranged relative, but I just cannot. The food was just so plain! It appears as if the restaurant chooses to cater to an older clientele which is fine because that is what they have so it works for that genre. Service was so-so. Restaurants always forget my milk because I ask to have it served with my food and not before and this restaurant was no exception. Nothing stood out as memorable. Not to be confused with the Edina Grill (also a great restaurant) this restaurant is a best-kept secret. It's the best place in the Twin Cities to have a private business breakfast or lunch as even when it's full, it's quiet. It's an easy location to get to, has adequate if not abundant parking, and is also a nice spot for a small happy hour gathering. The food is very good, very reasonable and there's something for everyone but nothing fancy. The service is good not excellent. Despite the fact that its been here for years, everyone I meet there has never been there and then says they will come back for sure. read more

I came here for lunch with my law partner the other day. The rather extensive menu had a lot of lunch place staples, but apparently the open face sandwiches are one of their specialties. The EAG puts their menus online without making you download a bunch of PDFs, which is greatly appreciated, and my partner thought it would be a nice change from the places on France and York Avenues. Before we left, I had been in the mood for a good salad, but it was one of the first cold days in a while, and I was disappointed by the descriptions of the salads, as they seemed to lack any imagination. So then I was eyeing a nice warm sandwich instead. This ended up being a pretty good call. I got the open faced Reuben, he got the Horsin' Around (mentioned in another review). We're both what you might call foodies, but not militant about it. Nevertheless, he won't finish something if he thinks it's not up to snuff. He seemed to enjoy his and I rather liked mine as well. Very tasty, very cheesy and great corned beef. Presentation is lacking, though. It's just a sandwich on a plate with some fries and a pickle. A little parsley or kale on there wouldn't kill them. The fries were good, but not great. Not too thin or thick, some skin on, but you can tell they come frozen. The pickle was meh. The atmosphere of the place is trying for a retro kind of vibe, but in a way that seems to try a little too hard. The walls are hung with framed photos of Edina and Minneapolis from the 20s and 30s, as well as some black and white portraits of people apparently well-known in Edina back in the day but just kind of random now. The booths are really narrow. Even if you're skinny, they don't give you much room to move your arms and your elbows kind of bang against the table. We had to ask to move to a table so we didn't feel like we were packed into a submarine mess hall. There's nothing special about the rest of the decoration or overall environment. It feels like it's been around for a while, but that's what they're going for, I guess. The noise level wasn't too bad, but there was a table of ladies playing mah jong over by the bar that started to get annoying after a few minutes. (I'm not hating on mah jong, my 80-year old grandmother is like the Paul Newman of the Chinese tile game) Even with a table cloth to dampen some of the sound, the clicking and shifting of tiles was grating. I presume this is a regular group, since the place isn't like a coffee shop that just invites people to hang out indefinitely. So if you go, ask to be seated at a table on the other side of the restaurant. Bottom line, it's decent food and I wouldn't complain if we went back there again, but not over places closer to my office like Tavern on France, which has a similar menu, but more flare and better execution. read more

There's something oddly charming about the neon signs, forest of fake planets, and other outdated 80s decor. Come here anytime between 4:30-6:30pm any day of the week, and you'll find a parking lot full of crookedly parked Cadillacs, Lexuses, and Mercedes. Recently, I stopped for a quick bite on around 6:20pm on a weeknight. The host took our name, and assured us plenty of tables would be available shortly. Like clockwork, several walker-dependent, well dressed guests shuffled out around 6:30pm, and we took were escorted to our table. The menu is full of monotonous, safe choices such as plain burgers, typical sandwiches, and a nightly dinner special - meatloaf, pot roast, liver and onions. Quick tip: get their early for the dinner specials they typically sell out. My boyfriend and I split the chicken fajitas and open face, smothered turkey sandwich. When considering cooking to the pallet of the typical customer, the dishes were everything I expected them to be - cooked well, but were unexciting and lacked any "soul". Even though the food's nothing to write home about, I still like the quirky charm of the place. I'd stop back for a convenient sandwich and good people watching. read more

This is a great family owned and run business. I have been going here for years and appreciate that the restaurant has evolved to meet the demands of an ever critical clientele. They do have a back patio place but I prefer the mid century low slung inside. Some lunches can be grilled a tad greasier than I like but overall basic grill food done well. I've only ate breakfast here a couple times and I've never been impressed. It just tastes like food I could make - and I don't want that... Went here last night for pot roast night with my mother-in-law, but apparently they sold out of it in an hour. Boo. Instead we got the pork chops, which were pretty tasty though nothing I couldn't make at home. It's kind of like an upscale diner. I think the reason that this place only has a handful of reviews is because pretty much everyone that was there were geriatric Edinans. None of the other stuff on the menu seemed that apppetizing. I have to give Eden Ave five stars. One of the best things about this place is that the food they serve is fresh. They have nightly fish specials that are really good. They come with choice of a side and always fresh veg. It is truly like eating home cooked food. The open face sandwiches are awesome. The new berry and horsing around are superb. If you are looking for something unusual, this is not the place, but more like going to a friends house for dinner. It is a place I can take my family to and know we can eat healthy with all the fresh food. My 10 yro loves the bison burger, and I love I can get a side of fresh broccoli to go with it. Been going to this restaurant for years recenty called to make a reservation on a Friday night and the Friday night manager answered the phone and I thought I had called a truck stop. This manager is very coarse and curt and when I tried to make avreservation the manager said I'll see what I can do. Took my name and hung up. She didn't ask what time. This is the blonde pregnant manager and when I mentioned my phone experience the hostess told her and she came and chewed me out. I thought resteraunts were in the hospitality business? Is this the Hilltops style of hospitality. It is ruining the honorable legacy of the Eden Avenue Grill which is what the Hilltop was named before remodeling. As long standing patrons, we've enjoyed the "comfort food" cuisine over a couple decades. The menu rarely changes and, when it does, never pushes the envelope. Perhaps because most of the clientele are older and content with old favorites. My concern is the poor service. It's gotten worse. Even in off hours, seating is slow, waitresses (not all) are slow to bring beverages, take orders, deliver correct orders and offer beverage refills and checks. The place is often full, so the clientele is obviously adapted to this lack of attention. I am not. I'll not be visiting Hilltop until I hear their service has improved. read more

Awesome customer service!!! Just held a private event here and I cannot say enough good things about this place. The planning phase was smooth with Bret and Tina, service from our dedicated waitress was wonderful, and the food was great! Also love the interior since their remodel a couple years ago. Great food, great service. Too many children. I was there on a Saturday night and saw five boys about 10 years old all sitting together at the bar with their dads. Why should five children have to sit at the bar. Also a newborn crying baby with his parents on a high top table by the bar. The hilltop is turning into a Perkins with a bar. Tooo bad. I liked this place. Menu was a bit odd, like it couldn't decide if it wanted to be bar food, fresh-mex or high class dining. Case in point, menu included what seemed to be street tacos of several kinds and then highlighted the burger section with several options. Also had seafood, BBQ, wraps and sandwiches. Jack of all trades, master of none? Not quite, I went for the burger based on witnessing another patrons massive and tasty looking burger. Mine had fried egg, avacado and bacon; 3 of my favorite options. It was tasty but from a presentation standpoint kind of sloppy. The egg was barely on the burger. With this monstrosity of a burger, taking it apart to get the egg situated was messy to say the least. It came with fries which were excellent! Great batter and seasoned perfect. Only critique of the fries is there weren't many served. Service was okay, nothing great. We didn't order drinks and perhaps that's why we didn't see the waitress outside of ordering, receiving food and getting the bill. I'd visit again, but wouldn't go out of my way, except maybe for those delish fries. read more

First Impressions ...... We arrived and stood at the front not knowing if we seated ourselves or were seated ? After a few minutes a larger woman grabbed menus to seat us .. It wasn't the fact that she was a larger woman . But, her attire looked terribly sloppy and she seemed rather unfriendly. I was already not impressed. We sat down and looked at the menu and knew what we wanted right away ... So after about 5 minutes a woman comes asking... what we wanted to drink, but didnt ask to take our food order. A few minutes later, she comes with my coffee no cream .. So I reminded her ... 5 minutes later another person comes and brings us water. Still no cream ... so again I ask for cream ...... atleast another 5 minutes goes by and still no cream or server so we left .. It was 130 pm..So well after the lunch rush and there were maybe 5 tables in the restaurant and I counted atleast 4 severs running around .. I have been in the bar/restaurant business for 30+yrs . I have a great deal of patience when it comes to dining out . I also understand the concept that servers are getting cut that time of day .... This was way beyond my patience and compassion for being "in the weeds ? if that was the case ? and My 1st impression of the sloppy dressed employee sealed the deal for me . I read a StarTribune.com review on this restaurant last week so my wife and I decided to make the drive from Lakeville on a Sunday evening. It's our first visit to this location (Old and new). Service was great. But our food took a very long time to arrive. That's hard when you have a 2 year old with you. I order a Warren Burger. My wife had another burger. My daughter had a grilled cheese sandwich. After a long period of time, we finally got our food. I looked at the cheese on the burger/sandwich and can tell this thing has been under a heatlamp. The cheese has hardened. That's very disappointing. They were busy. But this can't happen. On top of that, my wife's burger was burnt. Even the lady that sat nearby said, "That burger looks like a piece of charcoal. That doesn't look appetizing". That said it all. But on a good note, the server comped our meal. Not only did it took a long time, but they messed up my wife's food. Will we go back? Not unless we are in the area. We'll give them another shot based on great service alone. The food? What we ordered wasn't 'fantastic'. But we'll get something different next time. On another note, a lot of reviews said that this place caters to older folks. That's not an exaggeration. I have no problem with that. I am wondering that they enjoyed the place before when it was called something else. I thought the place looked like another sports bar/restaurant. We were a large group of 30. we were seated in the patio . It was JULY. the patio is inclosed but no air conditioning and the manager had only 2 small fans. He did not seem to be very concerned about the comfort of his customers. It appeared they had a heating element for winter but nothing for the summer heat. Thus the one star. The menu was limited because of the large group. The food was okay but not anything special. The waitress was excellent serving a large group. This is not a place I would recommend. read more

Good place, but super small. Sometimes the experience is nice, other times not so much. Expect the crowd to be 60+ in age for breakfast, lunch and dinner. While the food is good it's a limited menu, but still decent. The problems I've had with this place make it hard to give it more stars. Our names have been called completely wrong and our table given away to another party. The tables by the bar have horribly uncomfortable wooden chairs with low backs (think ikea) and the back porch is usually reserved for a party( taking a significant portion of their seating away) I think they could switch some things up it would make for a nicer experience and allow their place to shine. read more

I just moved to the area and a nice old woman I spoke to at a bakery recommended this restaurant. I ordered take out from the Eden avenue grill one evening to try it and had an open faced turkey sandwich. I thought the sandwich was tasty, but not remarkable. I will probably eat there again.
