The service here was excellent. Even though the line was pretty long when we arrived, they turned tables quickly and we were seated in about 15 minutes. It's also very kid-friendly--they provided a high chair and even gave my little one a small toy, which was such a thoughtful touch. Ordering was easy, and our food came out quickly. The food, however, was just okay. The Banana French Toast was way too sweet--it was covered in syrup. I expected the banana to be incorporated into the toast, but it was really just a few slices on top. It ended up being overly rich, and I could only manage a few bites. There were also quite a few flies buzzing around our table during the meal, which definitely took away from the experience.
After watching the sunset, Hubby and I wanted to grab a quick dinner. We walked in and sat at the bar! Food was good! French onion soup was my favorite! Server Dani was great!
The place is iconic, the food is good and the portions large. Good service helps to make up for the crowds who swarm here at meal time. Great breakfasts served all day and good dineresque lunches and dinners. And if you are in the mood, snd somehow have room, the deserts aren't too shabby either. Good luck, though, with the parking.
Def an old timer feel. It's such a cute diner. Indoor & outdoor seating for whatever you desire. Service was quick and friendly. I came late-ish about 10pm on a Thursday. They had people so it was still somewhat poppin at this hour. I ended up ordering a tuna sandwich, basically the melt but with no cheese or being toasted/melted. I like their tuna-- not too fishy. Sometimes tuna salad can end up being fishy. It was a healthy serving of tuna as well! Absolutely a generous amount. It came with a side of fruit, which the fruit was interesting. I never had a side of grapefruit before. It's a nice cozy place to stop by if you don't wanna end up at one of the fancy shmancy restaurants on the strip. Menu is pretty extensive so you have a lot of variety to choose from! Prices are pretty fair. Street parking/metered parking.
Super cool that this place is opened long hours and that they serve breakfast all day. It's basically a dinner with a huge menu and portions. The food was average to me, I didn't love anything and nothing really stood out. The Shirley Temple wasn't good either, it tasted like soda water with grenadine. Our server put in the wrong order for us, so we ended up having to wait a little longer for our correct order. I noticed that this happened to other tables nearby too.
My husband and I were directed to The Kettle by our hotel staff when we were looking for a decent dinner at 10PM. After a long drive, we were hungry, as we hadn't stopped to eat on the way. Anyway, when we arrived, it was just after 10PM on a Friday night. Though the area was bustling, we were able to find easy street parking less than a block away. The restaurant was busy, but there were plenty of open tables. The place had a bit of the old diner type of vibe, but it was definitely more upscale and modern. We were greeted and seated right away. As we sat down, I saw some of the food being brought out and everything looked great. The menu was quite vast, so it took some time to decide. We decided to start out with the California Tots. They were a huge plate of crispy tots with cheese sauce, bacon and lots of other toppings. It was probably enough for us to share for dinner. However, I then had my mind set on the Tuna Manhattan, which was sort of a fancy tuna melt. The offered a regular tuna melt (off menu) if I preferred. The Tuna Manhattan was served on a bun with cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a huge slice of avocado. It came with a side salad, fries, or soup. They also offered me some other sides I could substitute as well, such as onion rings or sweet potato fries. When I asked about the soup selection, they gave me four I could choose from. I ordered the French Onion. Anyway, the portions were generous and everything was delicious. It was also a great value for the amount and quality of food. The Kettle is open 24 hours. If you ever want late night (or anytime) eats in Manhattan Beach, I highly recommend The Kettle for a good solid meal.
As good as it's always been! We were in Manhattan Beach for the holiday firework show on the pier and came here after. We've been coming here for many years and the food here is consistently great! - and they are open till midnight if you are in the area and hungry late night. I got the Braised Pot Roast Dip (upgraded to a melt which adds melted provolone cheese - $19.95) which is their delicious pot roast with caramelized onion jam, horseradish mayo & au jus on a French roll. For my side (and I always recommend this at the Kettle) I get the French onion soup. The French onion here is to die for and is honestly dream worthy! The braised pot roast dip was also incredible as usual. Glad we chose to come here tonight!
Sunday lunch yesterday lacked the excellence of past visits. I can excuse the long wait for service once we were seated. The waitress seemed to have a scowl or attitude that was not welcoming. But then she might have been really tired or busy. I ordered the Patty melt which came with a choice of soup, salad, etc. I chose the French Onion soup. I've had it there many times in the past. And I asked for it (cup) to be upgraded to a bowl. When it came it looked good ... until I peered under the block of cheese and realized the "soup" was 99% broth with a few onions and a tiny piece of bread. It was ridiculous. The waiter could have given me a straw rather than a soup spoon. The Patty Melt also tasted great but had really poor presentation. It looked really unappetizing. Maybe I'm just being picky but it looked like meat in burned rye bread. But like I said it tasted very good. We were seated in a booth by the entrance door. Customers crowded in the area draping their arms down the inside of the booth hitting my guest in the head several times. I had to ask the cashier to please not permit crowding inside the entrance as there's a waiting area outside. No one asked how I liked my meal so I didn't say anything about the soup - which was a big time waste. Next time I'm there if a similar situation happens (if I order French Onion soup) I will complain.
Food This place is a local classic and a favorite of many people, and I got a classic country fried steak which is my usual go to brunch order. The actual food itself is a classic type of food, nothing trendy or over the top but you get what you order, which to be honest, isn't a bad thing and I like how their simple their food is. The actual steak wasn't bad, good texture on it crunch on the outside but still kinda tender steak that was cooked well, comes with well seasoned potatoes and eggs. The rest of my party got a burrito and some pancakes and there were pretty good as well and I would say reliable flavors that you know. My order came with a choice of pastry as well and I got a coffee and for me this was the higlight. Warm, fluffy, flavorful, everything that you'd want in a pastry accompanied by steak and eggs, definitely worth coming back to for the coffee cake alone Service/Ambiance For a sunday brunch, our party of 4 was seated pretty much right away but even if you had to wait, the front entrance had complimentary coffee and bread as well. The staff was nice and I liked the overall vibe of the restaurant. Service was relatively quick as well.
We had breakfast on a Tuesday morning. Parking: There is parking at the Metlox Parking lot. http://metloxmb.com/ You can park for 3 hours at $2.50 hour or you can park at the lower level for up to 10 hours at the same rate. There is also street parking (max 2 hours). Food: We ordered Eggs Benedict 10/10, Pot Roast Benedict 9/10, Country Fried Steak 10/10. I ordered the bran muffin 10/10. The coffee was very good too. Ambiance: They have indoor/outdoor seating. They have booths and tables. They have a long bar area with stools to sit on. Service; It was prompt. You can eat here and walk two blocks to the pier. It is a very good location. I would return.
Late night dinner and a friend told us to come to the Kettle . . We were seated outside which was nice to see the night life! We had the crab sandwich, French dip and salmon sandwich! Food was delicious and came out fast! Service is super friendly!
Back in the 90s and 2000s, I'd find myself here after bar hopping / clubbing on many late evenings enjoying a good meal. Really happy The Kettle is still open as many long time establishments in the area have closed down. This time, I brought my wife and kids here and as usual, the food did not disappoint. Our hostess was very patient and attentive. Kids were overwhelmed with all the choices to eat and they couldn't decide right away. Once they picked, the food came out rather quickly and it was more than enough to satisfy that they boxed up their leftovers. Everyone loved the vibe of the restaurant - warm and cozy.

Ordered: Oeufs Pain Perdu (~$17): two eggs, chicken sausage, breakfast potatoes, & French toast stuffed with cream cheese and orange marmalade; comes with juice (my choice was guava) House Made Carrot Raisin Muffin (~$5) Aya's take: I haven't been to a diner in as long as I can remember! It was my first time in Manhattan Beach and I was in the mood for a simple breakfast so The Kettle seemed like a great choice. We were a party of 5 and were able to get seated almost immediately at noon on a Sunday! As someone who loves having a sweet & savory combination for brunch, the Oeufs Pain Perdu stood out! The two eggs, chicken sausage, and breakfast potatoes are classic breakfast items and were all cooked perfectly. The French toast stuffed with cream cheese and orange marmalade was so unique, quite dense from the cream cheese, and a good mix of sweet and tart. I also like that the entree comes with juice. The guava was delicious but they give you such a small glass! I needed double that amount lol. We also tried the House Made Carrot Raisin Muffin. It's pretty balanced, not too sweet, but slightly burnt. I had higher expectations for it but outside of the butter which added a nice creamy texture, it was hard to really taste the carrot raisin. Great foodie spot! Ambiance was cool and it's all about the location on the corner-few minute walk to the beach/pier! We loved sitting outside in the patio. Shared the spinach & artichoke dip-delicious! Order the blackberry lemonade, so good! I enjoyed my Pulled Chicken Cobb salad-ask for it tossed! (Don't forget to ask for your muffin at the end cos it is included!) Hubby ordered the Braised Pot Roast-also really good! Seeing as my original review was 17 something years ago, I figured it was time for an update. This place still rocks as an all-night diner, a dying breed in Southern California. Their breakfast, especially both types of sausage, still hits as much as ever. And even though their giant muffins are no more, I'd still choose this joint to break my fast any day. And what with Uncle Bill's just up the street, this locale is a 1-2 punch of first meal excellence. The staff is still as stellar as ever. They managed to fill mine ahh Toby's coffee cup a combined 10-11 times, which must be some kind of record. This is one of the few places that anticipates your needs--drink refills, extra plate, more napkins, &c... you name it. That too is rare these days. And as always, I love the space. We agreed that the open dining room combined with all those windows just gives the impression this is a lively and jumping place to eat, and not some dark corner to hide away in. STEPH JUDGEMENT: A neighborhood institution that's still bringing the goods. I came here for the first time with a group of friends for brunch and had a great time. It was on a Monday, but between Christmas and New Year's so it felt like a weekend crowd. I think we had to wait about 30 minutes, which wasn't too bad. It's very spacious, with the look and feel of its early 1970s origins, but clean and well-maintained. I decided to get a cup of coffee and their Crab cake Benedict (poached eggs, house crabcakes, english muffin & orange cilantro hollandaise with potatoes and side of fruit). The orange cilantro hollandaise sounded kind of weird but turned out to be delicious. I forget what all my friends got, but I know we were all pleased. It describes itself as an "upscale diner" and I'd say that's an apt description, with its extensive menu of comfort foods executed well. They have a ton of stuff to choose from, so it's a good place for groups, if you don't mind the wait during busy times. Service was very good and the prices reasonable for the quality. One bite and my consciousness transcended to another plane. The texture? IMPOSSIBLY light, as if clouds had been transformed into edible form! The butter melted into golden rivers, the maple syrup creating sweet symphonies with every forkful. The ambiance wrapped around me like a warm embrace--casual yet refined, with the energy of Manhattan Beach flowing through every corner. The service? Attentive warriors who anticipated my every need before I could even voice it! This wasn't just breakfast... it was a BREAKFAST REVOLUTION! The Kettle had conquered my palate completely! Worst restaurant experience in Manhattan Beach. After awhile finally getting acknowledged, we got seated. Literally never got waters to start. And the so called server never came back to talk to us, no joke. He was an older guy. How is this man allowed to keep his job here with this level of unprofessionalism? After 10 minutes we got up and simply left. THANK GOD there is so many other options in the area with great food and services. We ended up with exceptional service at another place. Busy on a Saturday night but was able to snag a couple seats at their bar/counter eating area. Despite them being busy the service was excellent! Very attentive and quick to bring us our food. We ordered the fried pickles and the crunch in those was exquisite. A large portion as well it's perfect for sharing. My friend ordered the tuna melt with French onion soup. She was very happy with her choices. I opted for their Buffalo chicken sandwich and broccoli cheddar soup. The sandwich was tenders in it which were juicy and perfect however made it a little difficult to eat without them sliding out. The slaw was crunchy and complimented the tang of the Buffalo sauce very well. The broccoli cheddar was so yummy. Comforting and hearty I could easily eat a big bowl of this. Overall the experience was very pleasant. Looking forward to revisiting and trying out other menu options. read more

Parking: This location has street parking. I've been lucky enough to get street parking right in front every time, but it's not easy to find a spot and you have to pay the parking meter. 2 stars. Host stand: Always have been professional and quick to seat me. No small talk to my table, which would be nice. But, I've always asked for a specific seat and I've been given it each time, which is chill. 4.5 stars. Server: Always taken my order perfectly. Makes sure drinks are full and refilled. Friendly and professional. 4.5 stars. Food: It's been pretty good, always cooked well and consistent flavor. 4 stars. Bathrooms: Clean and everything works well. 4 stars. As a customer for decades, it's always a treat to revisit the kettle. I've been getting the same thing for years, which is the Chinese chicken salad, and a blueberry muffin. Today was no different although we did add the buffalo chicken tenders, the Cubano sandwich and the kettle breakfast. There was a little bit of a weight on a Sunday around 10:30 AM. There are paid lots of meters around the area and parking can be a little difficult. Just a classic everything on the menu restaurants. We sat outside. The location was rather busy. I have to say the stand out of the meal happens to be the buffalo chicken tenders. You get seven very large crispy chicken tenders with a light sauce on it and ranch and vegetable vegetables on the side for $14. The kettle breakfast comes with three pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon. If you're hungry or hung over, this is a go to for you the pancakes are light and fluffy with a hint of sweetness. The Cubano was just OK. Not our favorite sandwich, but I'm glad we tried it in general. It had a good portion of ham and cheese on a brioche bun. Service was a little slow today which I understand because the place was rather busy. But even just getting simple things like refills on our drinks or even the check took a little bit longer than expected. Just bring your patience. We'll definitely come back. read more

Greasy deliciousness. A staple along the Strand, The Kettle offers a wide variety of food items with reasonable prices, given the area. This place is busy all day with Manhattan Beach visitors and locals, and all night with partygoers. They offer all the foods your cardiologist told you not to eat (with some healthier options), but... you parked far away, you're walking the Strand after your meal, and you'll be hoofing it up and down the hill from the beach, so you can cheat on your diet a little bit, right? The fried pickles were the best I'd ever had. Big, diagonal slices, with the crunchiest and crispiest batter. I couldn't even get a photo before people put their paws all over them. I had the pot roast patty melt and it was packed with tender meat. The bread had garlic/butter/cheese grilled into its outer faces and the au jus was incredible (and salty). I had the soup of the day (cream of chicken) and was nice but severely undersalted, which I found ironic. I looked at neighboring diner's plates (for research purposes!) and I wanted to eat it all -- the Kettle truly delivers. Lastly, the muffins are great. The honey bran muffin is a dessert in itself, sticky and moist. Mmm... Hopefully you've put your name on the waitlist already, you'll be happy you did! read more

DELICIOUS DINER, A STAPLE IN MB! This amazing place is a staple in Manhattan Beach and it's open super late. It's so yummy but unassuming. Manhattan Beach is fun but has gotten very fancy recently. This place is casual and has a diverse menu. So my friends and I used to go here after partying in the area since it's open 24 hours on Friday and Saturday. When the kids were little we used to come here for breakfast (which is served all day!). Today we came here for dinner. My sons are obsessed with steak so they ordered that. I was super suspect of steak at a dinner but it was delicious and came with soup (they got chicken tortilla) or salad, spinach. and garlic bread (or you can get a muffin). But it also came with the MOST DECADENT MASHED POTATOES. They were loaded with sour cream, cheese, green onions, and copious amounts of bacon. I ordered the green goddess burger with beef. It was so great with perfectly cooked beef, half an avocado, and the most buttery brioche bun. I got a side salad instead of fries but the fries are good too. I've ate here handfuls of times but this last time was a bit disappointing. The wait wasn't long so that was good and we were greeted pretty quickly after being seated. We ordered some beers and those came out in a timely manner but our food took close to an hour to come out. We ordered two burgers and a kids mickey mouse pancake meal. We both ordered our burgers medium , my husband's burger was completely pink and cold inside so definitely not cooked properly. Thankfully my burger was cooked correctly but it was unpleasant to wait so long for a burger to be cold and raw in the middle with a different texture. We usually love the experience here but left this time feeling a bit disappointed. read more

If u are looking for a safe and nice place to eat late hours of the night .. this is it. The service is friendly. The price is a bit high. Think of it as a fine dining Dennys restaurant. The food .... so delicious . Any entree u get will taste amazing. The reason I gave it 4 not 5 starts is only bc i wish it was a 24 hr establishment everyday. Closes midnight . I ordered extra, extra crispy bacon and poached extra-well eggs. Got cold, limp bacon, and the eggs were completely runny. Very difficult to get refills on coffee. It's very obvious they are understaffed for the weekend. Also slipped on a puddle of oil on the floor when leaving. I forgot to take a photo, but my coffee mug had coffee stains around the lip that I had to rub fairly hard to get off. Waitress was friendly, but needed more help for the number of tables. Menu says recipes haven't changed in 50 years, but they absolutely have changed quite a bit since COVID. This used to be an absolute recommend for 20+ years, but today was my last visit. I had the pleasure of finally trying The Kettle. This place is always super busy and everyone looks to be enjoying their food. I found the food very tasty and the service was fast. This diner is in a prime location, just steps from the ocean and surrounded by cute shops, ice cream spots, and restaurants. It's a great place to hang out before or after your meal, especially since the whole area is super pedestrian-friendly--even if parking can be a bit tricky. Many nearby street spots are metered, with limits ranging from 24 minutes to 2 hours, currently at $2.50 per hour. There's also a parking structure nearby, but it's on the pricier side, so plan accordingly. As for the diner itself: food was solid, exactly what you'd expect from a classic American diner. The staff was very friendly, and the whole place had a welcoming, laid-back vibe. There's a nice outdoor patio that overlooks the sidewalk--perfect for people-watching-- and also dog friendly. read more
Great spot for a late night bite! I've always passed this place when ever I'm down in Manhattan Beach but never took the chance to go in. I'm happy I got to experience it this time. We weren't super hungry so everything we ordered was for the table which included a chicken club sandwich, onion rings, and 2 orders of their chicken tenders (because they were that good (very crispy)!). We also had their blackberry lemonade to drink. It was a fun time, the ambiance feels more rustic and woodsy rather than 1950s for a diner which is something you don't see too often in SoCal The service was friendly and quick. So I actually haven't been here in quite some years but this place has been here for a very long time. It's great to have one of those places that are not a chain and still family owned from what I know. This also is one of those places where the menu has so much to choose from. I came in on a Sunday evening and was sat fairly quickly. There was only one waitress on the floor but she handle it very well. Very friendly service and everything was good. This is one of those spots to go to when nothing else around is open late night, yet you still want some decent food. Feels like an old school spot. Good atmosphere. Will be back. read more
