If you know me at all, you know dipping below a three-star review pains me. However, I've given The Local a few chances since they opened a year and a half ago, and I've been disappointed on each visit. For me the positive aspects of the restaurant don't outweigh the negatives. At the end of the day, even if the decor, vibe and outdoor space are all awesome, I simply want good eats. We came here for Sunday brunch. After running into a good friend at the counter, we waited a few minutes and ordered. The employee was helpful in assisting my girlfriend's order and I went with the Steak Frites (medium rare) & Eggs (scrambled). I even splurged on a Funky Buddha beer! Sat outside, and the weather was perfect. Even though you order at the counter, servers will bring silverware, condiments and napkins to your table, which is actually pretty awesome for a fast casual restaurant. Within 20 minutes both of our dishes arrived. How can I put this delicately? In my opinion, this was a slap in the face to Steak Frites. Not only was the steak not cooked to my liking of what I ordered, it was just a plain tough, cheap piece of meat. Moving over to the eggs, which were also overcooked. There's no reason for eggs to be brown. The saving grace were actually the fries themselves, which were delicious! I've worked in enough restaurants to know there's a good chance they're frozen, but who cares if they taste good? I want to like this place. It's not far from my house, it's a cool place to be and be seen, they serve Bold Bean Coffee and lots of great, local beer. But the execution of the kitchen continues to let me down. We sat at the bar & Spence made ua the BEST espresso martinis we've ever had! And we've had a lot! The food was fresh & tasty, Spence took really good care of us eventhough they were really busy. Now that The Local is full service (i do not like ordering at a counter) we will come a lot more to try more menu items that sound yummy. read more

Our first time visiting, and we hope that the average experience isn't the normal. Upon entering we weren't greeted. The atmosphere was nice as there was outdoor and indoor seating. We ordered coffee, a latte and soup. The soup was so salty we did not finish it unfortunately. The caramel latte had so much caramel poured on top, and personally I didn't enjoy it. The place was clean and the only complaint we had was the food being way too salty and sugary. read more

Took the fam for Sunday breakfast. Ambiance upon walking-in was very welcoming and seating was spacious. This review is based on BREAKFAST. Let me start-off saying service was great for breakfast! And to the main review: We ordered the chicken and waffle, blue goat, refillable coffee and latte. Chicken and waffle: - Hotel batter puts their waffle to shame. - There must be a shortage on chicken breasts or these were flat-chested coz this was some skinny piece of breast-- looks like they filleted it into 3 slices..very sad. - Menu said strawberrie"S"..again sadly, wifey only received 1(one). - The syrup and butter could have been the saving-grace, but it wasn't enough to take it anywhere even if we forced ourselves. The Blue goat- i was pleasantly surprised, but alas, i was not feeling sweet-teethish today. It is a great dessert for two or three! Refillable coffee - watered-down this morning..almost was a bait-and-switch to make me get the pricier latte! they got me! It could be easily fixed by making a new brew..but seems like the barista/server didn't feel like making a new batch. again..why so stingy? Overall, disappointed with breakfast and we were still hungry. It's LENT for my family and I, but thinking it's Sunday we'd give ourselves a break..but nope! Was here for lunch recently and was good. Came back with family for breakfast. Waiter was fine but food was average at best. Husband's eggs cooked incorrectly but we had to search the waiter down after he didn't return for more than 10 min. Requested the eggs to be done correctly (not hard) took 3 attempts. Then they charged us for 2 of his orders- realized they made an error and just took one off. Really, you should have comped his meal- he ate way after we were all done. The BLAT was not very good. A thin smear of avocado with hardly any bacon but lots of lettuce. Very disappointed after having a good salad lunch there. read more

*This review is solely based on their food since it was delivered to me* Really, really wanting some breakfast Sunday morning without having to go out, I pulled up my delivery apps and browsed through them. I didn't want something I could just get anywhere, heck if I did I would've made it myself. That's when I came across this place. The item that stood out to me the most was the Gumby's Breakfast Bowl: sweet potato home fries, eggs, spinach, portobello mushrooms, sausage, goat cheese, green goddess dressing. That sounds like an interesting mix of flavors. I ordered it and in about 40 mins it being handed to me. First off, it smelled delicious and I hadn't even opened the to-go container yet. As you can see from the photo, the food slid around but it's still all there. I first tried the sausage and they were awesome. I'm not sure if some spices were added to the meat or if it was just the taste of the griddle, but the flavor was definitely there. The eggs were just regular eggs but when you eat some with each of the other items you get a different taste. No need to add anything to them....well....I DID add the green goddess dressing over everything which made the entire entree beyond anything I've ever had before (*adds green goddess dressing to grocery list). I was impressed and full so I was happy. I definitely would like to check them out in person next time. read more

Came today for brunch and to be honest for the price it was a pretty horrible experience. It took forever to get food which we were fine with because it's beautiful outside but the rest of our experience was not ok. Drinks were dropped without straws, for the water it was fine but for my husbands iced latte it wasn't. As far as food I ordered the fig salad with blackened chicken and my chicken came out absolutely inedible and rubbery. Finally when the server came back around he offered to go have me a fresh piece made but it took almost 20 minutes to get a new piece and by that time my salad was pretty much gone and I was just waiting to finish it sans chicken. When it finally came out I had a few small bites of salad left. The server apologized for the wait and I appreciated that but over all for $50 dollars plus a tip I would not come back just based on how poor this experience was. read more

I went here for brunch with my partner and his friend. I was super excited because online it looked super good! Unfortunately, our experience was very poor. Our server was rarely in the dining room (she did seem like the only server working), so the wait to order alone was a little annoying but it was okay because we just wanted food lol BUT Once we ordered, not only did it take forever for our food to come out but it was underwhelming to say the least. The "hot honey chicken " was 0/10. It's not actually hot, it's just honey and it had a super weird aftertaste (all three of us took a bite to make sure I wasn't going crazy lol). We didn't eat the dish other than taste testing it and we set it at the very edge of the table. 20 or so minutes go by and our server asked if we wanted a box.... As a server myself I was offended that she didn't even consider asking if there was anything wrong with the dish. Going out for brunch on Father's Day (Mother's Day, Valentines, etc) can be tricky and as it was, another place was picked but once there we were told +1 hour wait ( we had 3 toddlers) we decided "plan B" hence The Local. I am really glad they introduced us to this restaurant...the food was very, very good! It is not a brewery with all types of beer it is a creative, tasty "foodies" place! I ordered a piece of fried chicken on a salad;now normally I don't like someone else to dress my salad cause it's too wet or dry...this was spot on AND the chicken was so tasty and moist! My husband got a club and it was huge... he could not finish it which is unusual! Prices were good ($12-14 mostly) and portions were good! My husband and I love coming here for a treat yourself brunch. Food has always been on point and the service is great. They did change the interior a bit. Used to be seat yourself and there was a little couch tucked in the corner by the library. Now it's all seating and they seat you. We always spring for the carafe of mimosas because it's a better deal. The bakery next door is owned by the same people so check them out after for some sweets. They do also sell inside. read more

My husband and I love trying new places. Unfortunately, The Local left a bad taste in our mouths. We were promptly seated, but things went downhill from there. We waited about 10-15 min without anyone acknowledging our presence. We moved to the bar and expressed to two staff members that we had sat without anyone acknowledging us. Not once did anyone apologize for the lack of service. Overall, the food was decent and Hailey the bartender was pleasant. Because of the food quality and Hailey, I'm giving 3 stars. The friendly server at The Local absolutely earned all the stars, and the feel of the place is one I'd hang out in often if I lived a bit closer. The seating area with couch and books is so cozy, and the bar is welcoming. The bread and butter was simple with grilled toast slathered with butter, and I could have easily eaten all of as my meal. My chicken sandwich and fries were okay, and felt a bit overpriced for what it was. Between the bread, one glass of wine and the sandwich, it was a $30 meal and it didn't feel quite right for that. The bathroom is decorated super cute with pages from Dr Seuss all over, but also was a bit dirty and smelly. The Local is a decent place for a bite to eat and a brew, though there are a bunch of little things that detract from the overall experience. On the first visit, we started with the mushroom crostini which was tasty, though not super flavorful. I ordered the grilled shrimp entree with fries and corn succotash. The shrimp were well-cooked with some nice char; the fries were lukewarm and the corn succotash desperately needed salt. On the second visit, we started with calamari. While amazingly crispy, the squid itself was waaaaay too chewy which detracted from the whole experience. The fried chicken sandwich was just okay; the chicken itself was way over-fried and dry, and could have used a larger portion of chicken to help fill out the bun. Again, the fries were lukewarm. Service during both visits was so-so. The restaurant itself has plenty of seating but not enough staffing as everyone was running around like a chicken without a head, and I observed several instances of food runners walking plates around the dining room without a final destination and bringing it back to the kitchen where I imagine it was finally delivered to a hungry table at room temperature. I think this place could really be a shining star but overall, it really needs to iron out its service. read more

Visiting Jacksonville from Nashville and brunch is always a priority for us. We stopped at The Local around 12:30 for a bit later of a brunch. The place was packed and we had a 25 minute wait (totally worth the wait). The Full Duval & The Steak and Eggs were incredible! Definitely recommend if you're in San Macro! We prefer to enjoy our company when we're out eating and the service was excellent for that! Excellent communication and speedy service but not interrupting. read more

Decent spot for sandwiches and some craft beer options. The restaurant looks nice and has a rustic feel. I had the chicken nuggets and fries with Jack's sauce and my boyfriend had the Italian sandwich with fries. The fries were a bit thick and soggy for my liking and my nuggets looked similar to chic fil a nuggets but were a bit dry and not crispy enough. Although I realize this low-pay industry is struggling to find workers, The Local was particularly disorganized and the food I ordered just tasted bad. After waiting several minutes at the counter to order, an employee came up and told us we could seat ourselves if we were dining in. 15-20 minutes later, we were debating whether to leave when a server finally came to ask us what we wanted to drink. I ordered the shrimp pad Thai over cauliflower rice. Pad Thai should be savory with a hint of sweetness, but this sauce was sickeningly sweet. I ate a third of my meal, and should have sent it back and ordered something else, but I didn't want to wait any longer. I like it here! Very cute and somewhere I would like to hang out! It's comfortable and the foods good! It reminds me off Metro from years ago when they first opened up! Great combination of big portions of yummy foods, traditional and more unique offerings with a community feel! I got the Blat ( bacon, egg, lettuce, avocado and tomato) Sammie first visit, it was huge! The bread was a lil too hard for my liking where it hurts the roof of your mouth, but other then that tasty. Hubby got the Full Duval which was a huge portion of eggs, fried chicken breast, potatoes with a waffle...no complaints from him! Next visit tried the local toast which is their version of Avo Toast the twist was to add goat cheese and egg, it was good The fruity pebbles waffle was as fun as it sounds beautiful presentation and tasted even better! My friends and I came two Saturdays ago for brunch for a meeting. We met around 9ish and it wasn't too busy. I was able to snag us a table as soon as I walked in. Our food was good. Our potatoes were lukewarm though but not worth to ask for new. I got the chicken club sandwich without mayo. It was so good with their fries and their ranch. My friends got breakfast foods and loved theirs as well. I remember them saying the grits were really good. Heaven was our server and she was wonderful. The atmosphere is great and the staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, with the exception of breakfast, the food is subpar. The roasted root vegetable salad included large raw chunks of sweet potatoes, beets, etc. They were not roasted and could have cracked a tooth. The chicken was salty and dry. I have probably been a dozen times with friends who want to try it and, again with the exception of breakfast, it is always disappointing. Breakfast is pretty good, hence the 3 stars.
