It was a very busy Saturday night and my group of 4 had to wait to get their drinks and orders taken. That was no big deal. However there was no bread available to accompany the meal even on request with payment. The food was very good and priced fairly. Excellent salmon with Brussels sprouts and parsnip purée. Great fish tacos! Very satisfying clam chowder. Drink order was forgotten. But the main problem was it's freezing in there. No music or much of an ambiance although a wonderful view is available. We got here at 8:20 and received our food after they had closed (they close at 9:00pm). We waited an hour for our food. Some tables came in after us and were service but we were last. We waited more than an hour for our food and even the server acknowledged that. Keep in mind that we didn't even order any special requests. We were 3 adults and one child. One worker told us that the kitchen has many problem because they have one kitchen for 2 restaurants. The food its self was not great. It wasn't bad but I won't say I would come back here. We were there for the ScotFest event and we wanted to avoid the long lines at the food booths so we decided to grab a quick bite in the Queen Mary. RECEPTION: We arrived at around 1:45PM and were told that the wait would be about 45 minutes. After a few minutes when the hostess began calling names, I was observing a lot of no-shows. One no-show after another, we were actually quickly seated in maybe 15 minutes or less. However, we were led to a table of 2 with only one chair. The hostess quickly found us another chair. Really not a big deal, but surprised that it happened in the Queen Mary. SERVICE: It was adequate but really mediocre at best if compared with the service of similar restaurants. You'll find much more pleasant and friendlier service at a Cheesecake Factory. We ordered a salad and a flatbread to share (and we made that clear) but were not given any small plates. When we asked for small plates he brought us one, then finally realized that we needed 2 plates to share the food. My water was never refilled. The service was not bad, but it felt more like a Denny's than the Queen Mary. FOOD: The food was actually good, although it took a long time (about 30 minutes) for it to arrive. I know they were busy because of the ScotFest but this is the Queen Mary and they handle numerous large events all the time. They should work like a well-oiled machine. What we ordered: Chinese Chicken Salad ($15): A nice blend of greens, Napa cabbage, chicken breast meats, and tangerine pieces tossed in an Asian dressing. It was topped with crispy fried "wonton" pieces. The presentation was good. The dressing was actually quite tasty. It's a soy sauce based dressing with a touch of sesame oil flavor. Not too sweet and not too salty. Good! Prosciutto and Arugula Flatbread ($15): A thin crispy crust with a tangy tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and Parma ham. It was topped with a generous serving of chopped arugula leaves which have been tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette, which made them really yummy. Nice combination and nice presentation. PRICES: Prices are expensive as expected, but I don't find them any more expensive than the café at a Hyatt Regency or a Hilton. We were getting a bit hungry while walking around the Queen Mary and waiting for our tour to begin, and as the Promenade Cafe seemed like the cheapest option available to us, it was time to have lunch onboard a cruise ship! I went with a Chopped Chinese Chicken Salad (made with shredded oven roasted chicken, petite Asian greens, Napa cabbage, julienne peppers, green onions, mandarin orange segments, and crispy wonton strips tossed in a sesame Oriental dressing - $16) and Kathy's order was a plate of Baja Fish Tacos (3 large beer battered fish portions on corn tortillas topped with cabbage slaw, cured red onions, avocado, and chipotle cream with grilled limes - $17). As you can tell, while these were pricy, we did get what we paid for; in particular, Kathy's fish tacos were very satisfying, with the batter on the fish not too crispy. And you can't go wrong with a chopped Chinese chicken salad, especially when the dressing is just right and your salad isn't swimming in it. While the dining area had great views of Long Beach, the service was a bit disappointing. It took them a while to refill our drinks, and to be honest, I didn't think they were as friendly as the other staff we encountered throughout the Queen Mary. I ate lunch here yesterday.... and had the London Burger. I have never had a burger with a fried egg on it, and have always wanted to try it. I really liked it. The burger was a decent size, and really good. The french fries were the steak fries and nice and think and good. Service was good, and the view was awesome. Prices are not cheap. So I told the waitress I did not like it and I didn't want another one. She still charged me for it and unknowing my husband paid for it. When I went back to ask for it refunded. I was met with rudeness and saying she would refund it (she's the witness not the manger) and I couldn't speak to a manger because she didn't know where she was. My boyfriend and I came here for breakfast. We were seated right away, a window seat. Such a great view. We both could not understand our waiter! He had a very thick Spanish accent, we both had to keep asking him to repeat what he said. He rarely came over to our table to fill our drinks. Our breakfast was decent, it wasn't that great, they could definitely step it up. The French toast was good, the hash browns were good but weird, i don't know what was in it but the hash browns are definitely cooked with other things as well. The carpet was ruined and falling apart, a tripping Hazzard waiting to happen. We had the $26 per person breakfast buffet, here are the things that failed expectations. 1. Our orange juice was served in Ball Canning jars. As if we were at a Cajun or Country restaurant, not the Queen Mary 2. The buffet reminded me of a shorter version of the Golden Corral. What really sets the Promenade Cafe apart is ludicrous things like there being a large soup on the menu, but no large soup bowls, so we ended up with six tiny cups of chowder. Which we waited 45 minutes for. The longer our food took, the harder our surly waiter ignored us when we tried to get his attention (not even about the wait, we'd finished our drinks ages ago and were considering a trip to the nearest water fountain). Millie...a waitress who was deep in thought, smiled and greeted us as she whisked us away to our seating area. Startling panoramic view of City of Long Beach and their harbor as we gazed at the ships and boats traversing the channel. Then our server arrived. Vic...quite a gentleman who explained the menu to my guest and mom. Vic brought us an entree with soft sour dough bread with little butter balls. The ol' saying doesth applies, "Our hats off to the chef," even though we wern't wearing hats....yet...the food was a delight. The blasting of the ship's horn, as the ship sat in the water. Then our waiter Vic...told us that they were remodeling the rooms above us. (constant hammering) He then placed our food before us.....a delightful platter of fish n chips for my mom. Oooh it was just delicious..as I swiped a wittle piece. Please don't tell. The aroma of a Philley Cheese steak sandwich filled the air..as my friends platter was placed before her. I told her to look outside at the ship. Blackened Salmon with mashed potatoes smothered with brocoli and carrots was placed before me. One bite and I was in food heaven. I started off with an order of lemonade, which disappointedly turned out to be Minute Maid lemonade. You may not want to order that. The menu has burgers, pastas, and flatbread pizzas. The burgers are on average about $15. My order was for the flatbread pizza with prosciutto and arugula. I believe it was $14. I felt the pizza was an ample size; I couldn't finish it. It's topped with plenty of arugula, sweet balsamic vinegar and there is a good amount of prosciutto with this. I felt that the sauce was too sweet. What made the rating a 4 instead of a 3 was the service. I felt that our waiter was nice, helpful, and attentive. Also, the atmosphere here is nice. Perhaps I set my expectations too high. When one gives up a Friday night of drinking and dancing to go to the Queen Mary with a friend and her two young nieces, they hope to, at least, be properly fed and entertained. Rather than brave those oh so dangerous and confusing streets of the LBC, my guest and I decided on dining upon that grand ship of the West Coast, the QM. I mean, it's supposed to be classy, right? As per usual when traveling with a group (especially a group of non-foodies) the crowd tends to steer the direction of dining based on price and the menu's ability to placate with a variety of choices. When we happened upon The Promenade Cafe, my hopes of good food were quickly squelched when said menu was in view. Any place that sells Prime Rib for under 20 bucks is, mostly likely, serving up prison cuts of beef the likes of which I had to experience at my college dorm. I, therefore, hedged my bets and went with two seemingly safe choices. The pumpkin soup and the apple salad. Yeah, that didn't work out too well for me. I know what you are thinking, "C'mon Libby, I mean, it's a soup and salad. How bad can they mess up a soup and salad?" Here's how... by making the soup so sweet that it tasted like warm melted pumpkin pie. Yeah, not so much. The salad, which should have been at least palatable, was so sickeningly sweet from the sugar laden vinaigrette, that I couldn't even choke it down, save the few strawberries that decorated the plate. The only consolation I had was seeing that my counterparts ordered the Prime Rib and tasting it to realize that it was, in fact, low grade swill. So I dodged that bullet. In my opinion, nothing is worse than a badly prepared steak. It's just sacrilege. The service wasn't anything to write home about either. The workers were very nice and very sweet but also seemed to have been interning at some low grade culinary academy. Water refills? Who needs those? The view. Wait, there was a view? Sorry I was so distracted by the crap food and the pedestrian service that I didn't even look outside. My bad. So yeah, next time I visit old Queeny, I'm gonna grab a bite somewhere else. read more

Average food on the Queen Mary. I wanted to sit down and have dinner and enjoy a nice view of Long Beach at night so gave this a try. I got the herb roasted chicken which came with mashed potatoes and veggies. It was good. Not great, not bad; just somewhere in the middle. I thought it a little odd that the mashed potatoes didn't come with gravy or even butter; just plain. Our server was a delightful woman who I really liked. Unfortunately she was a terrible, unattentive server who never checked back on us so I could get butter for my mashed potatoes and she never refilled our empty glasses . We were very happy with our experience at The Promenade Cafe. I wasn't sure about eating here after reading some of the reviews but I'm glad we decided to go. We both just got a burger, but it was a damn good burger! It was huge, cooked to order, on a delicious roll with fresh toppings. The fries were crispy and cooked perfectly and our drinks were kept full throughout our entire meal. To top it off, it was very reasonably priced. I never really expect much out of restaurants set within or near tourist attractions. Yes, the Queen Mary is more than just a tourist attraction, but it does bring the tourism. In any case, I wasn't at all surprised to see a menu of safe and standard items. It gave me great amusement to see that there were a lot of Business Lunches going on here. I never thought I'd see a tourist restaurant be a place of business lunches, but there they were. Several tables of people in suits, discussing work-related topics in a serious manner while chowing down as politey as possible. My mother and I took a seat rather close to the waiter's area, but we didn't mind since we were "on a boat" and eager to give our feet a break. Our server was impossibly tall and very nice, attentive and courteous - always nice things to find when all you want to do is chill and nosh. After looking over the menu, I decided upon the Queen Mary Club sandwich and my mother went with her Fish & Chips. It did not take very long at all before we had our food and were chowing down. I tried a piece of fish from my mother's meal, and I have to say... it was SO very good. And the fish didn't break apart too much, either, which meant I could pick up the piece I'd snatched and eat it just like that. The fries were perfect - not too soft and not too hard. Just right and with just enough salt. My club and fries were equally good. Fresh lettuce and tomato and avocado with enough bacon and turkey to satisfy the meat-eater in me. We did actually split a dessert, but I'm not sure it was the best choice on the menu, though the server did recommend it. it was some sort of chocolate dessert with a raspberry something-something, but it just didn't pack as much of an intensity as I would've hoped. I was expecting it to be chewy like most places, but the chicken was tender. It also came with raw onions, lettuce and tomatoes. I asked if they could grill my onions but was told no by our waitress. Supposdly the cooks cant grill vegetables since they only use one cooking grill and its used for meat. If they cook vegetables, it may cause crossed contamination. Didnt want to make it a big deal so okay. Shrimp Cocktail- Large Pieces of shrimp and was good. Not the best, but good. Salad- My gf said it was pretty Yummy. It looked good! Clam Chowder- My friend had seemed to be enjoying it, except for the part when he found what looked to be a white pubic hair in his soup. Disgusting `_' The waitress was pretty friendly. Having eaten here thrice, the food was satisfying all three times. This is the middle child of the three restaurants aboard, meaning if you want good food, but Sir Winston's $32 plate doesn't suite your pocket, come here. I've had both the philly cheese and the club sandwich. The philly cheese was a good size, with plenty of good fries. My only con would be that it's overflowing with peppers. The club sandwhich was packed with turkey slices, but the bacon was really thin, although tasty. I noticed they put the fries in the middle (see picture), so you get a lot less fries than with a philly. I have also had a few forkfuls of the mac n cheese, and it was pretty good...not the best, not the worst. The brownie sundae was good, but be prepared to explode from being full! I'd give this place 4 stars if it wasn't for our waitress today...I'm not picky when it comes to waitressing, because I understand that it's hard to juggle a bunch of tables with more than one person/table...however, our waitress today (Alyson) was below subpar, and it was quite disappointing. She started off great, smiling, being attentive, etc. Once she brought us our food, it's like her shift ended for us. We were towards the front of the entrance, and we were her only table there. The second batch was hot but some of the cornflakes were black, which again shows it was all premade and they were just throwing it in the skillet to reheat. That's not usually a huge issue for me but when you're trying to be a fine dining establishment, I feel like more effort should be put into the food. I came by here last Saturday with my friend that was taking me out for a late birthday dinner. We got there around 7:30pm and we were seated right away. The views were nice and we were able to watch the sun go down! The menu is O.K. nothing too special but the prices sure were up there. We decided to split an appetizer sampler for $15.00 and it had a few chicken wings, fake egg rolls, coconut shrimp and potato skins. It was good but was not worth $15.00. Then we split the fish and chips for another $15.00. Again it was good but $15.00 good...not really. I got a mojito to drink and it was $9.00...that's steep. Basically you are paying to dine aboard the Queen Mary and I love the Queen Mary...so would I go back again...absolutely. Our waitress was nice and attentive. The view was beautiful. I had an omelette that was good, but needed a little kick from the tasty and refreshing pico de gallo. The crunchy French toast was amazing!!! The coffee, not so good. read more

2 Visits in 1 Day VISIT 1: BREAKFAST The Cafe is convenient while taking the various tours offered at the Queen Mary and so despite the reviews and the time constraints, we had breakfast and chose the "breakfast buffet". Upon entering you must stop with the host/hostess who will seat you. They are slow to come over to see if you want to order from the menu or partake in the breakfast buffet. In looking for a little variety, or Arcturus very Kraft, the attempt at variety, we chose the breakfast buffet. A table with some muffins and danishes, cold cereal, a waffle iron that's clearly an antique since it took forever to make my own waffle, oatmeal, French toast, bacon, sausage, potatoes, a small selection of fruit and that seemed to be it. The food was barely warm so when they brought out a fresh batch, we all made a run for the fresh and hot food. The only thing that never was hit were the eggs, they looked like powdered. The coffee was warm and the service just ok. VISIT #2 - LUNCH The only reason we came back for lunch was the convenience, no other alternative and the hamburger review. The check in: We walked in and there was a couple standing st the host/hostess podium, we asked if they were waiting and were told they had been asked to wait but because it had been too long, they were leaving. That should've been clue 1. We were finally greeted and seated and tinderbox the same thing, your server will be right with you. That was strike 2, it took the server quite a while to come to the table and bring our food. I'm truly sorry to have to write, these were NOT the best hamburgers ever nor were the fries the best either, we've had much better. Sadly, after 2 visits in 1 day, I can only give a 2 bc the service got worse and the food was no better, I have to say mediocre at best but will do in a pinch when hungry. If you're staying on the Queen Mary then the Promenade Cafe is really the only option for breakfast outside of ordering room service. So we came in and got a good table by the window. The menu is nothing special and pretty basic. There was a buffet for $14 which had some of the basics, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage etc. I went with the Lox Bagel which is pretty straight forward. My wife went with the corned beef hash which was made as a scramble with some vegetables and topped with scrambled eggs. It wasn't that great, but the bagel was good. Way overpriced for what you get, two meals with OJ and tea came was over $30. read more
