Ordered appetizer, crab cake ( very small , dollops) which ended ended up costing more than the chicken parm entree, $28 would have been worth it if the portions were fair and you got what you paid for. As a Hyannis residents my wife and I were delighted to see the reopening of Roadside Cafe, until we weren't. Right now only the back room is open (probably because it's off season), and the room is comfortable. Tonight there was live entertainment, however, the music and singing were too loud for the size of the room. We dined with another couple. Our drink order consisted of a beer, white wine, dirty vodka martini, and a Johnnie Walker Black. The martini and scotch both tasted like they were poured into a glass of ice that had half melted, i.e., completely watered down. On to apps...a Caesar Salad, Wedge Salad, and Onion Soup. All three were totally uninspiring. Salt, while never needing to be overwhelming, is a necessary cooking ingredient; and, evidently Chef at Roadside disagrees because there was not even a hint of salt seasoning. And then the unforgivable happened...our dinner orders came to the table before apps were finished...in my book, that's a mortal sin...and the responsibility for that is with the wait staff who obviously was not zeroed in on our table. One meal, the Osso Buco was very good...the swordfish was delivered dry, overcooked, and had to be sent back, the Vongole and Pescatore fra diavolo were weak attempts at Italian delights. The restaurant has only been reopened for about three weeks but if they don't elevate their game substantially and quickly, they won't survive the competition that operates at a very high level in the vicinity. read more

The food was excellent, but the overall it was way under staffed for the amount of customers they seated. If you don't have the staff, you can't fill the restaurant. We waited a long time to even get drinks. We asked then twice more for additional wine, and never got it... and had to be removed from the bill. Took over an hour to be seated despite a reservation due to lots of disorganization handling everyone who was checked in. Multiple others were seated before us who arrived after us and had later reservations. Had to approach the maitre d twice to remind him we were there. After finally being seated, tables was not set. Bread was brought out but had to ask for the butter and utensils and napkins. took 15 min just to get the utensils. When the food arrived, risotto was crunchy and severely undercooked. I ordered a delmonico steak and thats all you get. sides were extra $9 each. Steak was cooked good but nothing special, just salt and peppered. Would have had exactly the same steak along with 2 sides at Longhorn for much less price. The ossobuco looked good and wish i had ordered that. Our waiter was nice albeit overwhelmed with how busy the restaurant was. Sadly, not worth the cost of the food and we won't be back. It was certainly a VERY POOR experience. read more

We were given a gift certificate by some friends to try Roadhouse Café. After our experience, the only word I can use is MISERABLE. The host asked we wanted a table or a booth, we chose a table, but host sat us at a booth anyway. When we corrected the host he was very rude and sat us at a table. When our server arrived asked us if we had coupons. We told we had a gift certificate and she told us we were required to purchase an entrée to use it. We were going to anyway, but how rude is that. I ordered the pan seared-scallops and parmesan risotto and my husband ordered double cut pork chop. He ask for it to be cooked medium to medium well. We were shocked when the food arrived! My pan seared scallops were white, no brown anywhere, obvious never saw a pan. The risotto tasted pasty and like soy sauce without a hint of parmesan. My husbands pork chop was uneatable. It was tough, dry and very well done. We asked the server about the scallops and she said she spoke with the chef and he assured her they were pan seared them. Not a chance. We had 3 glasses of wine and our bill was $109.00. Our GC was for $50, but we felt rapped when we left. The place was almost empty, making me feel that most of these glowing "reviews" are fake. We are locals, not tourists. We will never stop here again. MISERABLE!!! You've been warned anyway. read more

When you're on the Cape and want to go out for a nice dinner with plenty of options from seafood to steak to everything in between check out Roadhouse Cafe. I dine there once or twice a year and work at a nearby hotel and Roadhouse, because of it's wide menu and valet parking is always a favorite to suggest for guests looking to go out and class it up. The are located down main street in Hyannis. Perfect location for a stroll up or down if you are looking to go out after. They offer free valet parking and there is a coat rack upon entering so you can relax at a table or booth or sit at the bar or by the piano and fireplace. This past trip my companion and I started off with their delicious apple sangria. Some of the best I've had on Cape. Apple slices are always a great touch. We started off with some scallops wrapped in bacon which she loved, I went for the Beef Short Ribs Tacos, which were delicious and filling. Very good job adding those to the menu for non seafood folks like myself. We of course had their salad, which would be nice if it came with the meal but for roughly $6 and their popular and delicious salad dressing it is worth it. For our dinner themselves, I know how the F are we still hungry!? She ordered the Baked Local Seafood Casserole which looked great and said was very good and I of course went for the 8oz Grilled Filet Mignon which was cooked a perfect MR w only the ends more MW served w/ garlic mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus that were very good as well. Our server was good. We sat right away in this huge place and the food came in good time. The food was ok... at first. We ALL had stomach issues after. One of 10 had to leave the table to go. The rest made it to our next stop or home. We had everything from seafood to chicken parmesan so there was no rhyme or reason as to why we were all sick. We arrived before the valet so we parked ourselves. On the way out the valet wanted to be tipped because he was there. Needless to say, we didn't pay the shyster. Scruffy and classy Roadhouse Café has been around for decades. One of those places that doesn't seem to change much from year to year and manages to ignore trends and fashion. Just keeps doing what it's always been doing, serving really good food in a unique and cool building. For someone going by Roadhouse for the first time they might think it's a divey or scruffy sort of place. Someplace where drunk tourists would end up at odd hours. They would be very wrong. Once inside the doors Roadhouse becomes a lovely place that just happens to have all kinds of cool and weird things to look at. Signs, antiques, old political posters, a fireplace and cool lights. The strange shape of the building just adds to the interest. The restaurant is more than just cool things to look at, the food happens to be excellent with all kinds of different and changing things on the menu. The type of restaurant that you can keep going to over and over and still be surprised. Roadhouse is indeed a unique and cool place. Not much to look at from the outside but inside the combination of great food and very cool atmosphere is extremely inticing. A restaurant that doesn't change because it does what it does so well it just doesn't have to. read more

My wife and I dined here tonight. We were able to secure reservations via their website and UReserve. We had to make a couple of changes to the reservations as our harbor cruise was late. We thought we were helping the business by updating but when we arrived, the manager made a snide remark to the hostess about us changing times. Not a great start. The waitress was very friendly and knowledgable of the menu. We had bussers refilling our waters extremely fast and fresh bread and oil/seasoning was served. All very good. I ordered the blackened swordfish with mango salsa and jasmine rice. Delicious! Swordfish was well cooked, juicy, spiced to perfection. The salsa was a nice touch-good to mix something sweet like that with the spicy seasoned swordfish-although they used a little too much for me personally. The rice was a little on the bland side but not too bad. My wife ordered the 8oz filet mignon with smashed potatoes and broccoli. She enjoyed her steak immensely but said it was a tad over cooked and she would have liked it a bit more seasoned. Also $33 for an 8 oz filet is a bit steep, whereas my huge swordfish filet was only $26. She did love her smashed potatoes and the broccoli was steamed and plated with the meal. The oysters are fresh and the drinks were fast. But, the food, 90% of the food was horrible! The bacon on the clam casino looked exactly like the bacon you get at a dunkin donuts drive through. Some of these dinner plates that come with rice have this awkward gravy/teriyaki sauce smothered in the whole dish. The SEAfood casserole was one of the worst my friend had. I could tell my good friend whom is happy with ANY food, literally, was NOT happy with this. The price for a caesar salad with steak tips was 25$ Other dishes can go up to 30$ and higher. It's not on the nice busy street to ppl watch and they have NO outdoor seating. The waiter did take a couple minutes to get our order and to get into order, but friendly and food was VERY fast. Had a "hit and miss" dinner at The Roadhouse Tuesday night. Crab cakes were delicious but the sauce and salsa were tasteless (except the cilantro in the salsa which I don't like). It looked like a mango salsa and sauce. The pork chop stuffed with spinach, roasted peppers and mozzarella with port demi-glace was delicious as well but the carrots were not seasoned or "dressed" with anything at all and the garlic mashed potatoes were cold. Also, the waitress kept asking me (3 times) if I wanted another cocktail when I had only sipped the one drink I ordered. Terrible service. Long wait to even be greeted by the server. He was obviously over-burdened, and none of the other servers or staff helped him, and management didn't have another server take our table. But they were okay hanging around the hostess desk and having a good time. Strike 1. Food was terrible, and small portions. Beef overcooked and gristly. Pasta dish served with a small amount of penne (maybe 12 pieces). Strike 2. Server still so busy he never checked-back with us to see if everything was okay. We finally flagged the busgirl over to get our check so that we could leave this unpleasant experience. Strike 3. Naturally, the credit card sat on the bill unpicked-up by anyone for a few minutes. One word: excellent! From the drinks and appetizers, to their seafood and pasta, steak is phenomenal. All their dishes just exude flavor and careful preparation. I love this place. I came here for the first time four years ago. My fiance and I came here for valentines day, and then came back for three years in a row. Tonight I had the steak tips with gorgonzola coleslaw. The tips were juicy and still cooked the way I asked for them. The crab cakes were veey good, not loaded with breading..just pure crabby goodness. Service is always precise and speedy. My only gripe was before we left and already paid our bill, another waitress told her table about the specials being served that our waitress never said two words about. Immediately when we parked, a gentlemen ( valet ) outside the parking lot said that 'the kitchen closes at 9pm but I saw you come in so I told the kitchen to wait for you'. We were like wow, thank you for allowing us to eat even though it was about to close. Once we entered, they welcomed us with a big smile and walked us to our seat. It's a beauty comfortable warm and homey environment. Live music was playing in the background and the music flowed through the whole restaurant that uplifted everyone's vibe and danced the night away. The valet that told the kitchen to wait for us, he danced with one of the customers and it was so nice like they knew each other and it just liven the place. Our waiter, an amazing person, Ralph was so nice. He definitely made me smile. He was patient and made some small jokes a long the way. We ordered two plates 12oz sirloin with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The sirloin was cooked to perfect for medium rare. Juicy in the middle, just right. Chewy and it melt in my mouth. Delicious. We also order a pesto pizza and artichokes. It was plated where it was easy for us to eat the pizza. After that, Ralph checked up on us to see if our meal was satisfying to us and yes it was. When I pointed this out to the waiter, she replied " wonderful" and went away. From the moment we pulled into the parking lot, we knew this restaurant was going to be good. Valet parking to a welcoming hostess that offered us a. Ice table in a room with a pianist. We were then greeted by our waiter that made our anniversary dinner extra special. Dinner was great! Started with a deliciously fresh spinach salad...lived the dressing. My husband got filet and lobster as his main course. The filet was tender and the lobster was cooked to perfection. I got the pork chop (quite unusual choice for me). It was huge! Stuffed with spinach, prosciutto and a roasted pepper. Came with squash and mashed potatoes. Dessert! On my! So freaken good! Make sure you save room. Large group of 14 and we were accommodated perfectly. Toni, was our waitress and she was great!! We were never left searching for her with empty water glasses or cocktails. She was very attentive, and hospitable, even sliced our bill into 7 checks which was much appreciated. Serving a large group can often be challenging, she was great!! Menu is vast and we had a wide variety of dishes at our table, scallops, chicken parm, salad with steak tips, salad with shrimp, swordfish (I'd give this the highest rating, looked fabulous and my friend enjoyed it), pasta bolognese, chicken stir fry, and salmon specials. The only slight disappointment was the 2 salmon were slightly under cooked. Could have sent it back, but opted not to, and the sauce was very sweet. All other dishes were perfect and to everyone's enjoyment. They also have a nice piano bar in one of the side rooms, this would be great for couples out for a more romantic dinner. The bar is also quite comfortable, with large leather back stools. We were there on an "off season" Saturday and it was full. I can only imagine what it would be like in season. We didn't need the parking, but that would definitely be a plus during the summer as well. read more

What a disaster - let me out!" We have NEVER had a worse experience than we did at this place. We were seated in the bar, at a table so narrow the menus overlapped and kept knocking over things. But that was minor..... We were there for two going on three hours . Ordered a bottle of wine. 15 minutes later were told there were no wine glasses. We said, never mind, bring any glass -- so 20 minutes later get water glasses and a waiter saying the wine we ordered was no longer available. Another 15 minutes and a bottle of wine does get served. Many more minutes passed......and we were ready to walk out when they said food was coming..... So, more than an hour after we arrived, we got food -- and when it came the order was wrong and the food was awful. Took them 20 minutes to figure out the bill and remove the items that never arrived. Another 20 minutes for the manager to tell us it was all our fault and threaten to call the cops on us. Really. We are four 60 + year olds, who eat out all over the world, and understand restaurants get understaffed and have problems. But never, in all these years, has an experience been so bad. read more

The short version: 4 stars for food... 5 stars for the exceptional service. We stopped in on July 4th, Independence Day. My partner and I are often traveling on 7/4 and have had a history of bad service on that particular day, probably because servers don't want to be working on a holiday. (See my review of Manhattan's Cityhouse restaurant from last year as an example.) Well, not this time: Roadhouse Cafe in Hyannis treated us like royalty. We started with the lobster soft tacos. Oh my, they were loaded with the meat from a 1lb. lobster in each generously-sized taco (two on the plate). A little bit of butter, a teensy touch of sriracha aioli, and some cabbage. A bit messy but fantastic. For our meals, my partner had a daily special: poached salmon with a mango coulee, tropical fruit salsa, and jasmine rice. It was quite good; the salmon was clearly fresh, and the tropical fruit salsa was just as fresh. I had the filet mignon and twin lobster tails. Two reactions on this platter: - The steak was perfect. Perfect! The accompanying mashed potatoes were loaded with cream and butter, and therefore fantastic. - The lobster tails were dry and tough. The only real disappointment for the meal. Dessert was the Heath Bar brownie sundae. I don't have to go into detail; it was lovely. Why am I giving out five stars? Exceptional service. Here's why: We asked the waitress (Angela) where she recommended we see the fireworks display later in the evening, given how many people were likely to pack the beaches in town. She told us that we should drive around to West Yarmouth and watch from the other side of the bay. We explained we weren't from Cape Cod at all and she said she would draw us a map. Two minute later, she'd drawn a DETAILED map with directions on how to get there, and said it was a great little secret of the area that only locals knew about. Turns out her directions were perfect. We avoided the bulk of the crowds, got a great parking spot with a short walk to a beach with an unhindered 180-degree view of the fireworks over the water. We also had a nice dinner.
