Such a cute little local diner. It's filed with cute grandparents and locals. They get points for friendly service, great coffee with free refills and perfectly cooked hash browns. Walked to the boat parade with my wife and kiddo, and saw this place was empty, so we went right in. We were all really hungry and didn't want to wait. We sat down and the server brought us water, and silverware, then walked away. We sat for a few minutes, a little perplexed that she didn't give us a menu. Just as I was going to flag her down, I noticed the white board said "Boat Parade Menu". It would've been nice for the server to direct us to the white board when she seated us. After viewing the menu we decided that a) there wasn't really anything appealing and b) we didn't want to spend $13 for a hot dog, or $15 for a chicken pot pie. We decided to leave, so my wife suggested we just grab a cinnamon roll and a couple coffees....but $7 for a cinnamon roll??? Nope. So I ordered a hot cocoa, and a drip coffee without even asking the price first. Huge mistake...it cost $12.98!!!! ($12.68 plus .30 for using my debit card) WTF??? I guess they jacked up the prices for the boat parade? Literally NO OTHER RESTAURANT did that. No wonder the place was empty. We walked up the street another block and bought pizza. As we walked to the canals, we saw Naples Rib Company was selling hot cocoa for $1.75. I have no interest in ever going back to try their food. read more

Awesome food! I had one of the specials of the day, the Chilaquiles - Breakfast Nachos, ( I added avocado on top and hashbrowns on the side). I had spent so much time looking for a parking spot near the 2nd street eateries, that I had decided to just go home, but then I saw The Small Cafe!!! So glad I decided to stop! I would of gave the business 4 stars but after coming on two different times and days I am officially never coming back my first visit was on May ,29 at 1030am to the cafe was bad service I sat down at the corner booth and waited for any server to approach me to take my order I seen her across from me sitting next to a couple telling a story witch was okay at the time because I was looking over the menu to see what I wanted to eat but once I did get my ordain in it was like pulling teeth to get her to refill my coffee and water I literally had to get up and walk to register to close out my tab that day! The second time around witch was on June 21 at 830am to be exact I decided I would sit at the bar top witch I might add was better then last time but what made me not want to ever come back was the sanitary ness of the waitress let me start of saying is this she was running register touching money opening doors etc so I'm sitting there eating my food and I see her about to bake some muffins she literally was scooping the batter with the spoon but was getting her hands to get it out of the spoon into the baking pan didn't bother to put gloves on and wash her hands at all! She even was touching the berries like that and all the toppings with her hands mind you people touch all kinds of stuff while doing things please. Be aware this restaurant isn't up to code at all and here's the icing on the cake I might add so I'm ready to check out and like before I had to stand up to he my check she prints out my check and puts it on the tin can instead of her greeting me at register she does that what sense does this make I'm thinking when it's obvious I'm already at the register so I go and grab the check and walk back to register as I'm checking out I swipe my card and the debit card machine was acting up running slow she rudely walks away and takes someone order while I'm standing at register trying to pay my bill so I can leave to my appointment they need to train there waitress better on several things not worth the money go some where else read more

I have been going to the small Café for years and it has always been my number 1 favorite place for breakfast in Long Beach. I always get the same thing (a healthy scramble with chicken and a plain buttered bagel) because it is so good that I have no desire to try anything else. I went in there today for the first time in about eight months. Based on the meal I had, which is the same thing I always get, I would never go back again. Either they have changed owners or management but it was horrible. There was so much cheese on on the scramble that I couldn't see any eggs or chicken. I asked for extra chopped tomatoes and there was probably half the amount they normally put in let alone extra and there was no flavor whatsoever. The bagel wasn't buttered nor was there any butter brought to the table. When I went up to pay I was still hungry so I purchased a cinnamon roll that I was told was made that day or the day before. It was rockhard so I asked them to heat it up so it would be softer. It was so dry and there was hardly any cinnamon on it at all. Awful! I am still in shock as this has been a consistently great restaurant and somehow they've let it go down the drain. read more

What a JEM! I have driven by this bland looking diner (from the outside) on the way to my usual breakfast places for over 16 months. It's in a small but pleasant looking strip mall off 2nd street on the elegant NAPLES ISLAND. It looked so dull from the outside I just never bothered to check it out. But on the Sunday after Thanksgiving I went to get my hair cut at Fantastic Sam's and my hair cutter said it was really quite nice. So I went. The place was packed and for good reason. Simple but clean and very well kept inside. The resaraunts is owned and run by partners Carrie and Laurie. Two charming and competent young ladies. The food was great. The service was great, the customers lent a good vibe. I read my paper for two hours with a smile on my face. The NFL game was on later and they turned off the music and up the TV. It was great. Next time I'll have beer! From now on I can walk rather than drive to my new favorite breakfast/lunch joint...larger than life..."THE SMALL CAFE"! read more

Was here for breakfast and had the banana nut pancakes. They were so good and loaded with bananas and nuts. I would definitely order them again. I came back for lunch and had a tuna sandwich piled with veggies that was really good as well. My server was jenny both times and she was really sweet each time.
