So far, so good with The Whiskey Kitchen. We tried this new restaurant last weekend, and even though it was heaving with crowds of people, we were sat within five minutes and the service was spot on all evening. An initial test of their service stripes here came when I wasn't happy sitting at a center table and asked for an adjacent booth, which had not yet been cleared from the previous party. The lady (who carried herself like the owner so I will assume that is who she was) seating us said immediately "no problem" and directed a near by busboy to clear the table asap. The easy thing to do would have been to tell me "no" or "sorry, its just not ready yet yada yada yada." But she effortlessly made it happen for us. I really appreciated that. The appetizer menu has a number of innovative dishes that we found intriguing. We ended up choosing the Buffalo Califlower bites with blue cheese. I agree that it sounds weird but they were exceptionally good and I highly recommend them. It feels like you are eating buffalo wings, but they might actually be healthy. Or at least sort of... Kudos on the craft beer and whiskey menus. You can tell a lot of thought and effort went into them. The entree menu is still pretty limited but rumor has it that it will be expanding in the near future once the kitchen crew gets a little more broken in. What they are serving right now is well-executed bar food such as burgers, wood fired pizzas and excellent house-smoked baby back ribs slathered with a made-in-house barbecue sauce. They were delicious and the rack was so huge I couldn't finish it. Leftovers, baby! The price points are also quite reasonable. You can eat well here without having to drop a major wallet bomb. I am holding off on giving a fifth star since I want to see the menu evolve and see where they go with it. I am also hoping that the ghosts of restaurants past (i.e. the number of restaurants in this space previously who died off quickly) don't somehow find there way in here and wreak havoc. Came here last week during lunch time for restaurant week. I saw that they had clam chowder and their whisky burger $12 in total. I thought both with alright, I wasn't blown out the park or anything. The chowder wasn't chunky enough for me and it didn't have that saltiness that I usually like in seafood soups that I was looking for. The highlights of the burger were the two hearty pieces of bacon and the fries. Boyyy those were thick and crunchy. My server was very attentive I never got her name. Being a whiskey connoisseur and a foodie it didn't take much convincing for my wife and I to meet friends at Whiskey Kitchen / gastropub. Ambiance: Décor is a modern rustic with plenty of seating inside and out making it a great place to meet friends for a drink. Bar: I was hoping that being a whiskey bar they'd have a good choice of whiskey, scotch and bourbon with my personal whiskey favorite (at least for last few months) Dalwhinnie...but no. In fact the whiskey selection wasn't much more than what can be found at a good quality restaurant in Hampton Roads and less when compared to similar liquor specialty bars like 80/20. I actually don't remember seeing some mainstay favorites of whiskey lovers like Jameson, Tullamore Dew or Scotch's like Laphroaig, Macallan, Glenfiddich. However, they did have Hudson, which I settled on and a few whiskies that were new to me. That said if you're a beer drinker, which I'm not, I think you'll be pleased because it seemed to me they had a larger variety of beers than whiskey. Service: I can't comment on how long the wait would've been for a table because the others were already seated when we arrived. What I can tell you is that despite the place being full our server kept checking on our table and was very professional. Even when our group finished our meals we weren't rushed off. Everyone felt comfortable staying seated and enjoying a few drinks together. Meal: The menu is a little limited, which would be fine if they mastered everything on the menu but that wasn't the case. It was average Burgers with a good Chimichuri Steak. Cleanliness: Good. In spite of the large crowd the tables and chairs/booths were wiped down and restrooms clean. Overall: This is a great choice to meet for casual conversation, watching a game or just getting drinks. However if you're coming for dinner or whiskey's you could be a little disappointed. I know it's a new gastropub and will improve over time but for now it's just A-OK so I give it 3 Stars. read more

Loved it!! The decor is awesome and the restaurant is super clean, the selection of Craft Beers Local and from afar on tap and canned/bottled is great!! A must try is the Pretzel with cheese dip with one of those lovely craft beers helping the cheese dip flavor. Our server Haley was very nice and did a great job with special requests which has been an issue of late at other places. My burger was amazing tasty bacon and a large pile of onion straws and the wifes chicken salad wrap was just what she wanted. The owner was present in the dining room a super plus and she was very engaging, we can see this becoming a regular spot for us on the way to pungo for fruits and veggies. When I found out that a new restaurant called the Whiskey Kitchen was coming to town, I knew that I had heard that name before, so I did my research over the internet. It turns out that this is an independent restaurant. It just turns out the name of the restaurant is popular. While hubby had a dinner meeting, I grabbed my keys with one hand, dragging the kid with me, I thought of this place right from the beginning. The place was buzzing with a lot of people not to mention it was a gorgeous evening the kid and I decided to dine outside. Kiddo ordered your basic cheese burger, she said it was great and while she bit into the burger, I noticed that it was juicy. Just like what you expect to have when eating a burger. I, on the other hand, wanted something filling without putting myself into a food comma. I thought I'd give the beet burger a try. It was interesting, the burger was filling,but not heavy filling like a burger. I didn't taste like a burger, it tasted like beets. I found it pleasant, will I order it again? Tried the buffalo cauliflower bites and the parmesan cauliflower bites. I already knew I wasn't going to dig the buffalo ones because these things are supposed to replicate boneless chicken wings or whatever, and I am not a fan of those either. The problem with the buffalo cauliflower is that it had been drenched in buffalo sauce, so it was kinda soggy. An incredible amount of breading all in vain because of the sauce. Also, it was just too hot (but please note: I have a low tolerance for that); The vegetable was now indiscernible. It was just a ball of hot breading bonded together in a lumpy way. The parmesan cauliflower bites were better. The heavy breading had a good crunch. And these were more reminscent of a protein. I did have to drench these in the marinara they came with. Wasn't too flavorful otherwise. But that was neat, and weird -- that I could forget that I was eating a vegetable. In a super unhealthy way, albeit, but it was well-received. read more

LOL It was definitely on the louder side but not so loud you couldn't enjoy your meal. OK, getting all of that out-of-the-way the food was really good. Although there was not as many vegan options as I had thought, they were still very accommodating to food allergies. The beet burger was delicious! My first visit here was on a Saturday night, and the wait was I think an hour? We put our names down but just hung out by the bar in case any seats opened up. After all, we were really just coming here to drink. The place was really nice, and the bartenders were attentive. We eventually got seats at the bar so we didn't have to wait for a table. They have an extensive selection of craft beers, in bottles and on tap. There's also a huge list of cocktails, and wines as well. My fiancé and I came to lunch here one day while we were back in town visiting friends. We sat on the patio and had a great lunch! My fiancé ordered the Whiskey burger and he loved it and said it was the best burger he has had in a long time. I had the baby back ribs and they were fall off the bone delicious! I ordered a full rack of ribs thinking that the usual half rack is pretty chintzy. It was way to much for me! The half rack of ribs would have sufficed. Highly recommend!! They're big on local & fresh ingredients which you could really taste in the food. Mmmm hello fresh tomatoes. My fiancé went with the fish & chips. I had a bite & they were tasty. Food tasted generic for example the rib rack tasted like Walmart baby back ribs that's marinated and air sealed and ready to cook. This was hands down one of the best experiences we've had in a very long time. I've lived part-time in VA Beach my whole life and had yet to try this place out, so finally we came in last week. I wasn't expecting such an amazing time! The wait seemed pretty long and we had a party of 6, but when we walked in there was a table dead ahead meant for 6 people. I asked if we could have that and they said "sure, that's a seat yourself!" so being pregnant and not having to stand, it was my lucky day. Our server was AMAZING. She didn't miss a beat, remembered everything and brought refills without asking, she was nice and outgoing, brought enough sauces for everyone, never let us go too long without checking up on us but wasn't annoying about it either! I haven't had such great service in a very long time. Being pregnant, I wasn't able to get a cocktail but everyone raved about theirs. My husband, normally a beer drinker, ordered a cucumber drink and absolutely loved it. Now onto the food! Each couple got two appetizers each and everyone shared their food, and everyone loved what each other had. Nobody had a single sub-par thing to say about any dish! My husband and I got the crab soup and buffalo cauliflower bites, I like cauliflower fine but not enough to order it. It was amazing! It was juicy and tender but not mushy, and packed full of flavor! I loved it. My soup was great and had the perfect portion. I tried my BIL's fried pickle spears, which I didn't have high hopes for being spears, but they were actually wonderful! The pretzel beer cheese was also fantastic. I can't remember everything we had tried. For dinner, I got a BBQ pizza and again didn't have high hopes because I have yet to find a place that makes it as well as I do, but I definitely found it! The sauce was the PERFECT amount, the chicken was not too present, and the cilantro was the perfect touch! I didn't think I'd be able to eat all of it but I came very close for me! Also, the ranch dressing was absolutely delicious. That might be weird to say but good ranch is hard to find and that was pretty fantastic. After entrees, we were all very full...then someone asked about the desserts. Our server listed four that all sounded amazing so we got one of each! I rarely order desserts from restaurants so this speaks volumes. We tried a neopolitan cake, a key lime pie, some kind of cheesecake and a blondie. The blondie and neapolitan cake were my favorites hands down, some people liked the cheesecake and key lime best...so everyone got to have a little something they loved! I'm a die hard carnivore, and the Whiskey burger is among the best, if not the best, I've had during my 43 years on Earth. That being said, if I'm craving Chili, their vegetarian chili beats any meat chili, hands down. The best BBQ sandwich and sauce ever and if you still have room, order the chocolate cake (even if just one fork full) and you will be amazed. My only misgiving is the restaurant is not in the city I live. Trust me... Worth the drive, Worth the wait, and worth every penny. Wow, just wow. Went on a date here for restaurant week and was thoroughly impressed, even after hearing from my roommate that the service sucked and food wasn't great. Boy was she wrong. When I first tried the buffalo cauliflower bites I was hestitant - because who actually likes cauliflower? It was amazing! so delicious and a great alternative for a vegetarian who secretly misses buffalo chicken bites. The entree fall salmon salad I had was absolutely amazing as well, whatever dressing was on it tasted like heaven in my mouth. It was fresh and the ingredients mixed together perfectly. The pumpkin bread pudding for dessert was more cake like and less pudding like but was moist and full of flavor. I wish it was served with icecream instead of whipped cream, but regardless it was phenomenal. The service was great, had a young bubbly and sprite girl named Haydee (pronounced HEIDI not hay-dee as it sounds) and she was more than helpful and attentive. The owner popped by as well to prebus and she was a pleasure to chat with. She is apparently the mastermind behind all the great vegetarian options, you think with a name like whiskey kitchen it would be mostly meat options but they have a bigger than usual vegetarian section, as well as vegan options as well. Okay, for starters, I avoided this place like the plague during tourist season. Every time I would ride by over the Summer, the place was PACKED. I mean Hulk Hogan's jock strap stuffed. Having seen niche restaurants wan and fade as local interest burned out, I really wasn't in a hurry to try it out. (I mean they are putting a STEAK AND SHAKE right up the street....am I RIGHT??) So, on a Monday evening me and my food snob Mom stepped into the building that used to house a different type of restaurant (I cannot recall the name but it had a toy train assembled on tracks running around the top of the wall) We were hopeful. Locals get a little tired of Kelly's and AJ Gators. I mean, we need something with some flair right? This place looked promising. Atmosphere was kinda cool. The women's room smelled like a mix of tobacco, old wood, and burning embers. Not sure if that was some intentional thing or if my pregnant brain was playing tricks on me. We were waited on fairly quickly. Forgive me, I cannot remember the waiter's name, but he was very attentive and fast. It probably helped that we were four of the ten people in the whole place. I ordered she crab soup. Now, don't give a Coastie a crap bowl of she-crab or you will get a bad rap no matter how astounding the rest of the menu is. This she-crab was a very thin almost broth like consistency, with maybe a tablespoon of crab meat in the middle. Not good. Not good at all. I actually made such a terrible face at the first taste, my Mom asked if I was okay. It was clearly not fresh or fussed over. Not impressed at all. We ordered the pretzel and the beer cheese. Big ol' pretzel. Four people ate off of it. Pretty nice pretzel. Beer cheese? At first it was yummy and perfect. But after about five minutes it curdled to a consistency I can only describe as vigilante hummus. The texture changed as well, almost grainy. Tasted like it came from a powder mix? Not sure, but the cheese could have been a lot better. So our main dishes: Me and Moms ordered salmon. She asked that hers be prepared the way it was listed in the salad version, and they handled it graciously. She was pleased overall. I had the salmon as it came, with a "orchard vinaigrette" The fish was cooked well. I was very happy with it. But it was not full of any panache or awesomeness. It was a run of the mill piece of salmon that may have benefited from a little more zest. But all together I was pleased. A nice little touch: the waiter noticed the large amount of beer cheese (vigilante hummus) we still had and brought us out a basket of home made potato chips to finish the rest of the cheese with. We ate the chips, but not with the cheese. Very cool and considerate. Unfortunately, being that I am in a delicate state, I could not partake in the large selection of bourbon, scotch, and whiskey they boasted. Honestly, the selection was large but not very exotic. However their local brew selection was really nice. Good to see local business being supported. I would love to see them expand their menu. I think they are off to a good start, but we need something amazing. Anyone can be an Outback Steakhouse. Raise the bar! If you are just wanting some easy nosh with no frills, you may be happy here. I love when a restaurant has the moxie to put Circa 2014 on their logo. It tells me they're in it for the long haul. The Whiskey Kitchen has a lot of good going for it. Some fun appetizers like the mongo sized hot-pretzel, and fried cauliflower that you can pretend is healthy for you, because, you know, cauliflower. I opted for one of my favorite benchmark foods, Short Rib. It was fork ready and was served with some hearty potatoes and mushrooms. Lot of brown! But delicious.
