I was looking fwd to eating/smelling my stinky tofu for dinner after driving down from NorCal on 12/21, sun - since it's a rarity in NorCal. The places that used to serve the smelly delicacy pretty much all closed up in NorCal so I gotta git some where/when I can, right? - like a junkies gotta have their fix. Anyway the food tasted good, not that stinky, but it was good and I also ordered a wonton soup which I thought was outstanding. The service was ok bc the owner man took my order, served me, and gave me the chk. The overall ambience can kinda be best described as a hole in the wall, but it's tolerable for a Chinese joint in the burbs. The only bad part that kinda made me leery was that the boss man did a few calculations after I gave him a $100 bill for a $25.40 bill. There was not really any customers that I saw and I saw him fumbling around on the cash register for an extra 5-10 min, but I didn't say anything or think too hard abt it but it just didn't feel quite right. Anyway he brought my change and I pulled a couple dollars out for a tip and grabbed my change and the receipt. When I got back to my place, I found out he shortchanged me by at least $4-5, which I can kick myself for not heeding my leery antennae's alert when I had a chance to go back at him. I love Tofu King. They should be getting more higher reviews in my opinion. This is a small restaurant owned by a couple. They are extremely nice and always provide excellent service. I love coming here because I know they will take good care of me. The location provides a parking lot and easy to find parking. They are opened during COVID. So I know I can always get good authentic taiwanese food just like how my parents make. I am Taiwanese. So when it comes to authentic Taiwanese food, I can always count on Tofu King to satisfy my cravings. Now as a Taiwanese, stinky tofu is a must try side dish to go with any entrees. Tofu King is well known in SGV for delivering the best stink tofu. It has the to have the perfect stinkiness and crispiness to be legit. And it has to come with prickled cabbage and the savory dipping sauce. The portion is generous to share with the family. As far as the entrees, the pork chops, chicken leg, minced pork, sliced pork and popcorn chicken dishes are my favorite. They serve with side dishes too like veggies, minced pork, pickled cabbage, etc. The portion is generous and feels my stomach with Taiwanese love. For COVID safety I ordered myvmral togo. It looked like they are only open for takeout. I called in the order and was given an approximate time the food would be ready. When I arrived the food was already ready and was being stored in an ice chest so that it wouldn't get cold quickly. That was awesome. When I called in my order I appreciated the service. He spoke English, Taiwanese and Mandarin. For someone Taiwanese but grew up in the US this was very helpful for me since I am limited in reading a Chinese menu but am familiar with saying Taiwanese dish names. Good Taiwanese comfort food. I've been coming here for years. The owner/manager had always been so kind to me and hubby. He's always so patient in walking us through the menu. Favorite dishes: -Stinky Fried Tofu: I prefer the larger cut of tofu vs. bite size. -Fried Pork Chop Rice: The pork chop is always fried just right. I'm not a big fan of fried food, but I'll grab a couple of slices from hubby. -Mushroom Ground Pork Rice w/Egg (brown rice): The little chunks of mushroom sucks in all the meat sauce. Brown rice is generally tough to chew, but after absorbing the sauce. It's one of the best brown rice dish I've had. -Spicy Stinky Tofu Glass Noodle Soup: I always get the glass noodles instead of noodles so it doesn't fill me up so easily. I have been here many times. The Arcadia location has a better dining area than the others. First off, if you aren't used to stinky tofu, you better be ready for it, don't mistake it for a sewage overflow. Order the stinky tofu, and that is why you are reading this. It comes with a garlic sauce and chill sauce. Dip the tofu in both or pour the whole bowl of sauce on top of your tofu. Then chopstick your Taiwanese kimchi then stab thru the tofu, and shove it in your mouth! hmm hmm good! But eat it however you will. Couple things. The boss here is a salesman, and he should be. He will sell you the dish you may not want, and you should give it a try anyway. Your taste buds may thank you later. I wish he would turn on the A/C to room temperature, the place is always a lil warmer than other restaurants. As a Taiwanese guy, I really want to support this business. The tofu king in Rowland is decent. I am not sure what happened to this one. We ordered the stinky tofu, beef noodle and 麻辣燙。 stinky tofu was ok.... More crunch than chewy. The 泡菜 was so little and sad. The beef noodle soup, supposedly , 18 hour cook was meager and barely any noodles. The meat was hard. The soup doesn't have MSG but salty... and it comes with bok Choi. The spicy tofu noodles was alright. It's hard to get anywhere else. Server didn't bother serving us water. Instead of AC, they choose to open the door. Then mosquitoes came in .... I can't stand restaurants that just gave up. It's hard to get Taiwanese food anymore ... most owners gave up or sold it. If you are charging like 18.99 for a beef noodles... then the food better be good. I hate to write a crap review but this place is such a trap. It's Taiwanese food with chefs that doesn't care. While the food deserves maybe a 3.5/4 stars, the price deserving a 3 stars, the service and attitude of the owner makes this the last time I ever step into this restaurant again and I've been coming here on and off for years. Not going to go into details about my confrontation with the owner but just take a look at other yelp reviews and you'll get the jist. Save yourself an anger inducing meal and just go somewhere else. This guy is a joke to be working front of house let alone be the actual owner of this establishment. I am always on the lookout for STINKY stinky tofu here in North America where I am unfortunately stuck in right now so when I saw the sign outside this place I had to give it a try. Stinky tofu: The texture was on point! Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Sadly though, it was not stinky enough and my search continues. If you read this review and you know of a good stinky tofu around please send me a message. I will be so grateful. Braised pork: Portion is small and perfect for one. Very delicious! Recommend. As you open the door and walk in you say to yourself; "Man! This place stinks. Im ready to eat!" Many people come through this shop for their stinky fried tofu and they're in no better place to treat their taste buds. This shop sells them in large and bite size options. Both are great but I prefer the large size with their soy sauce and chili sauce. More to chew on and i feel I'm getting for tofu than anything. Now maybe you're not a fan of stink tofu and was dragged here by your partner, your friends or you walked in the wrong shop and didn't want to feel rude turning tail (don't judge, its happened to people...). There are other taiwanese dishes worth trying here. I found in my experience some were hit or miss and its worth finding out which dish will stick with you as you return to the shop. Their beef stew noodle is fairly good, especially with the tendon. The broth is very flavorful and definitely fill you up. The mushroom sliced pork rice is also very flavorful paired with some appetizers/snacks can really fill you up. There is also the mushroom ground pork with rice available but I recommend sticking with the former for that pop in your flavor. The cold noodle is fairly tasty but a bit on the sweet side. Many people like it but I'll only go for it when I have a bit of a sweet craving. Similarly with the spicy oil wonton. I was hoping for a very flavorful spicy oil taste but however much spicy oil is mixed in with this wonton is overpowerered by the peanut butter base taste found in their cold noodle dish. This dish is also on the sweeter side. Their meatball glass noodle is also very delicious. Don't forget to add the pepper to make the soup stand out. Rou yuan and mi gao was a definite miss, due to the taste and texture. Especially true with the rou yuan, very hard to find a shop that gets the outer layer covering texture right. While you make your way there, don't worry about parking. We were always able to get parking in their lot. read more

This was a hard 3-3.5 for me to give, because the service was attentive and as friendly as a "hole in the wall" family-like Taiwanese joint can get. The restaurant was clean. The menu looks delicious, and there are tons of options. As a vegetarian, this got me excited that there were so many options. Basically, instead of using a bone broth for the vegetarian noodle soups, they just use water. I got a dan dan mien/sesame noodle, garlic bok choy noodle soup, and fried stinky. My first impressions were that indeed, for the amount of tofu we got, the price is a bit steep. The tofu wasn't as stinky as expected (USA regulations maybe), and over-all it was underwhelming. The garlic noodle soup was very garlicky so hard to mess up. The soup itself was great, but the noodles were over-cooked and kept breaking apart with chopsticks. The dan dan mien was surprisingly watery. Maybe it was the style, but other places usually have a thicker sauce. It was almost a sesame noodle soup that had a 1 dimension flavor (sesame). As such a simple dish, I guess you could call it "homestyle," but I know other joints add other flavor dimensions like spice or some sort of pickle. Overall, it was disappointing, because the menu looked so good on paper. The beef pancake rolls were really tasty, definitely top 3 for me. Tender bits of beef, with the garnishes rolled up inside, and the pancake part was not too oily or anything. I would for sure get this again. I got the fried stinky tofu in bite sized pieces and they were decent. They do have that funk, but they weren't too memorable. Too bad since this place is called Tofu King. The spicy wontons were horrible; completely over cooked wrappers but true to the name, they are very spicy. I would give a worse rating but the beef rolls were really really good, and in light of how much restaurants are limited and needing to cut back on staff, I understand it's probably one chef making all the orders (or that's what bf saw when he went to pick up the order). read more

Y'all tripping. I have zero clue how this place has anything less than 4.5 stars. This is hands down the best braised pork rice (滷肉飯) in LA, possibly even better than any spot I've had in Taipei. The braised pork is extremely tender and flavorful while being cut into perfectly small shapes to really complement the rice, which has a sauce that is the right amount of oil and flavor. The rice isn't too soggy tasting, while the meat isn't dry at all, so they really mastered the perfect balance you're looking for. Most other ones I've tried in LA usually have either one of those problems. As far as their name goes, so far I've only tried the fried stinky tofu, which is decent. Nothing to rave about, but not bad if you're craving it. I will be back soon to try the mala braised stinky tofu. read more

Beef wonton soup - soup base is okay.. Nothing special. Wonton.... Meat that was wrap inside was so small.. Wonton is a little overcook..flour texture was a little too soft. Wonton.. Be nice if they make a little bigger and maybe add a little green onions and sesame oil to bring out the taste. Pork thick noodle soup - put a lot of cornstarch. Not a lot of meat in a bowl of soup or even ingredients.. Noodles was well cooked. Fried squid - it's spicy flavor but they didn't mention in the menu or didn't ask the level of spiciness. When you first walk in, you will be greeted with the distinct smell of stinky tofu, indicating this place is absolutely legit! Fight through it, it will be worth it! Absolutely everything was delicious, and after eating the stinky tofu, you wont smell it anymore. It's totally worth it! Right before you walk into this place you can already smell the stinky tofu. Once you actually open the door, your nose will get assaulted if you're not used to it. For me, I welcome it. I love stinky tofu and I wish there were more stores selling it. We ended up getting a plate of stinky tofu, Dan Dan noodles and minced mushroom pork rice. Both the tofu and the pork rice were out of this world.... I could eat it almost everyday. The tofu came with three decently sized pieces with pickled cabbage. The pork rice was kinda small, but it was packed with flavor. However the Dan Dan noodles were lacking flavor. I don't think i would order that again. I think all three dishes came out to less than 20 bucks. They also have condiments on the table, and the don't forget to use the sauce for stinky tofu. This place is cash only, and I typically knock off one star if they don't take credit cards. But i'm feeling generous today and I also gotta help out my fellow Taiwanese peeps. read more

If you're looking for authentic Taiwanese food, Tofu King definitely hits the spot! They're known for their signature Stinky Tofu, which you can smell right when you walk in, but it's very good. Their tofu is larger in size and they have the garlic tofu dipping sauce on each table for you to use at your leisure. They pair it with a side of spicy pickled cabbage, which was good as well! Also tried their Green Onion Pancakes, which was good, crispy and flaky and a nice buffer since everything else we ordered was a bit spicy. Their Half Beef/Half Tendon Noodle Soup was good as well, comes with a side of pickled veggies & beef was pretty tender. The Dan Dan Mian was good as well, my mom asked for extra chili oil to add to these noodles since she likes things spicy. Overall this place is clean, with a very pungent smell of stinky tofu (which I don't mind, but for those of you who do mind, you've been warned!), but very delicious & authentic tasting Taiwanese food. They charge $15 for a very small bowl of tofu soup (few pieces of tofu and some veggies). This was our first time trying this and very disappointed. There was not even a piece of meat inside the tofu soup. Do Not Order!!! 2. Grilled chicken leg rice 2/5 It's also around $14-15. Do not recommend either. The chicken was dry and overcooked. This place gets your jaw dropping. I was born and raised in Taiwan, and let me tell you -- to find Taiwanese food that stick true to the core is the hardest thing in US. However, this is one of the few that meets my expectation. This is a hole in a wall that you walk in not expecting much but come out truly satisfied. The food ranges from your typical street food of stinky tofu, taiwanese sausage, to minced pork rice, that's truly off the chart (top 3 recommendation btw). Price: I'd say its worth for the quality, however it is on a little of the pricier side for the smaller dishes/appetizers. One down fall however, they are a cash only place. Meaning, stock up on cash before coming here! Food: beyond amazing! like mentioned before -- highly recommend the taiwanese sausage, the chicken&pork rice, and lastly -- my favorite two dish, the stinky tofu & the minced pork rice (which completely melts in your mouth! truly my favorite!). If you are a stinky tofu fan, the fried stinky tofu will bring you home! Service: the waiter is a hit and miss -- its always the same guy (i think he's the owner or partial owner but I could be wrong). He sometimes can come off rude, and other times can come off nice. But I go there for the food more than the service, so its alright. The serving speed is pretty fast, they don't leave you starving for long! The space: the space there is a little small, if you have a big party coming, you should call them in advance. We called in for a party of 13 which they were able to help accommodate. But to pull 13 chairs basically took up half of their place. (just to give an idea of the size). Parking: there's parking in the plaza, I dont think I have ever had problem finding parking there because the plaza is pretty quiet in itself. However, if there is trouble finding parking, there's a huge parking lot across the street that can accommodate. Overall, I give this place 5/5 not for the service, but for the food. It's always my go to place when I feel home sick even if its a 30-45 minute drive for me. It beats paying $1000 to fly back to taiwan when you are homesick! haha.
