When it is storming or scorching anywhere else, Pasadena is always a haven with sunny skies, a mild breeze, and tropical temps in the '80s. Yesterday was just like that, as it always is reliably. When you add to it the charm of Old Town, its stately buildings with a touch of modern thrown in for 22nd Century excitement, and its abundant arboreal greenery, there is not much more to ask for this side of heaven. Except! True Food Kitchen. We had been planning to eat here for the last few months but all sorts of other things got in the way, including the latest Covid restrictions that soured me on eating out. For our first foray back into the wild of it all, we decided we had to come to TFK. So glad we did. Delightful, crowded with festive brunchers like us, but not so packed as to be uncomfortable, we sat on the huge shaded patio. In fact, TFK is a sprawling complex of rooms and outdoor seating, lightly misted from above so the entire experience was cool and refreshing. Our servers, Cat and Kelly could not have been nicer. We never had to wait for anything and when we didn't know what to order or how to manage all of it, Kelly and Cat were right there to make it all happen. We had (see my menu picture) two starters, two main plates and two desserts. My Teriyaki Quinoa bowl was delicious -- I could taste the pan searing. My friend had the Ancient Grains bowl, one element of which were absolutely scrumptious miso-candied yam cubelets that I am going to try duplicating at home. The Roasted Acorn Squash Flatbread was a symphony of delicate flavors and the Brussel Sprouts were perfection personified. I cannot say enough about the quality of these dishes, and if I weren't on a perpetual austerity diet to stay slim, I would have had three more. As for the desserts, OMG. There are no words. The Squash Pie and Flourless Chocolate cake were divine, especially the latter which was made of such dark chocolate that it was almost black. Rarely do you get items of this quality anywhere. I had a latte and my friend enjoyed a lime and ginger concoction that was just right on this bright and cheerful day. Notice the beautiful spot True Food Kitchen occupies on the corner of Colorado in the Tanner Market complex (with Zara and Madewell, steps away, oh joy!). We started with the watermelon salad . It was so so good. It had cucumber, tomato, and avocado cream on top. Located in downtown Pasadena is this healthy gem! Parking can be found on the street, the public parking garage or a valet parking lot. We had reservations and we were sat right away. It was a Friday afternoon and it was a little busy when we arrived and service we received was average. You have the choice of either sitting inside or outside, and they have a variety of healthy food items and drinks to choose from. We started with their hummus and pita which was amazing, we cleaned the plate! Of the restaurants I've been to in Pasadena, True Food Kitchen definitely gives me the most farm-to-table vibe. The open, well-lit location and friendly employees make the experience quite welcoming, and the menu changes seasonally so there are many reasons to return. Every drink I've tried here has been delicious and refreshing. I couldn't suggest anything to improve them. I've tried the Monarch, the Strawberry Smash, and the Rose Sangria. My favorite was the Monarch because of its unique presentation and my preference for the ingredients. On my first visit (2 years ago) I came alone, and I ordered the Tuna Lettuce Cups, the Edamame Guacamole, and the Edamame Dumplings. Everything was fresh and yummy, but the dumplings stood out as being so tasty with a lovely, subtle truffle flavor, that I knew I would be bringing people here/recommending this place so they could specifically try this item. Luckily it seems that this is a year-round item. On my second visit (5 months ago) I came here with a date and we shared the Truffle Honey and Pear Flatbread, the Butternut Squash Pizza, and the Grilled Chicken & Mozzarella Panini with half kale, half sweet potato sides. We also ordered the favorite edamame dumplings, and they were probably the standout for my date. Again I enjoyed the subtle truffle in the flatbread pizza, but this time my favorite item was the butternut squash pizza. I like butternut squash during any time of the year, and there was a good balance of flavors and textures with the squash, kale, and ricotta. I was not a fan of the panini and would not order it again; it was too bland in comparison to the other items I've tried here. Although the menu changes seasonally, I feel that there aren't enough options to keep me visiting multiple times in the same season. During both visits I felt like I had ordered everything I felt like trying off the menu, and 3-4 dishes really isn't that many from a full menu. Let's start with parking the one way street between the Resturant's and the 710 has a parking lot which is 10 for parking in the every. The resturant is very large a car nation of indoor and out door space make reservation advance to improve your chances of getting in. They have a full bar and wine in the menu. We sat down at about 6:30 and were asked about drinks and our order promptly. I had brought my own wine and paid the 15 dollar corkage fee. The waitress was Venice said she would time out our appetizers and main courses and that was the last we saw of her for quite a while. We came to meet with friends and chat. After 45 mins we followed up on where the cauliflower and the hummus appetizers were since it seemed like a long time. The kitchen was backed up we were told even though we had noticed that tables that were seated after us were already eating their appetizers. Personally I feel that at least the hummus appetizers which is 3 pc of toast with three different toppings could be made quickly and served. It had great flavors and I would order again. The cauliflower was also very good. But waiting close to an hour for the main course was not good. Perhaps the parents which the screaming children did not help( misbehaved children is not the fault of the restaurant). Our main course arrived our friends who ordered more of a traditional main dish item were served first and my wife and I had ordered a pizza and a burger. The pizza arrived with cilantro on top which is not listed on the menu and I did send back to be remade ( if this was listed as part of the very detailed list of ingredients I would have mentioned the allergy or ordered something else. The burger which was hatch pepper and turkey was very good served with fingerling potatoes also good came about 8 minutes after our friends were served. We did not want them to wait for us to eat because cold food is never fun. After we finished our burger we were still waiting in the pizza and by this time our friends had already finished. A person not our waiter came up and said that the Bison pizza had a sauce also with cilantro so they could make it a different way and it would be out in 3 minutes it was more like 9 and by that time plates and flatware had been removed from the table. We were asked about dissertation which we normally get but all opted to skip because we did not think we wanted to wait that long. The bill was given to us but took a while to be picked up. The Resturant did take off a few items because of the problems which while I would never ask for this I felt it was the right thing to do. True Foods used to one of our favorites on a summer Friday night! Sitting outside, they used to have delicious cocktails and good food. They still have good food...unless they run out of what you want...then you have to make do with something else. I've never been to a restaurant that "runs out" of the popular items so often! It's happened to me a few times now! But the cocktail were the bigger issue!! What on earth happened to their cocktails? I used to LOVE their spicy margaritas! I've had the time and time again! Yesterday, I ordered my usual and they brought out a drink that was weak and watery. It no longer has that tart, lime taste. It tastes more like dirty ranch water with VERY little tequila or lime! We asked them to remake them and I think they were messing with us, because we got the same thing, but they put EXTRA jalapeño syrup to try and cover up the fact that it was still a weak, poor excuse for a margarita. Now they were so spicy the were undrinkable. We basically left then there almost full. Our waiter could've seen we did not drink them, but he did nothing further to remedy or try to make up for the awful drinks. Not the service we've come to expect from True Foods. First off I'd like to acknowledge that dining out is not something many Americans get to do these days with cost of living & goods being so high, especially in SoCal. I made eye contact with the bar staff several times but wasn't even acknowledged for what felt like 10 minutes. Finally one of them came over but I felt like I was a bother to them. They did the bare minimum throughout my meal and never asked if I needed anything else or was happy with my meal. I ordered the edamame dumplings which are always great, the original chicken sandwich, which was a massive disappointment along with the smoky bloody Mary, which was also a massive disappointment. The sandwich was dry and pretty flavorless. I had to order a side of ranch just to eat it. And the drink was so water down that it barely had any flavor. For $20 I was expecting so much more. All together this evening cost me almost $65. Sad to say I have no intentions of returning again. If the owners or managers happen to see this please have a talk with your wait staff in the bar. They're rude and have no concept of service. It's as if being a server is below them and you're annoying them simply by being present. To the chef...healthy good should taste incredible. Hi everyone I went to true food kitchen with my family we waited and ended up waiting an hour and a half for our food to get served. We only received one item and it was cold chicken parm. The server took it back and ten mins later we received a cold curry dish. We have now been waiting for around two hours with no dishes not even our appetizer out. We asked to heat up the chicken parm if possible and they never brought it back out. We ended up telling them if they weren't going to bring it back just to take it off our checks. I will not be coming back here again and I'm very disappointed in every single worker here and most important I feel disrespected by the manager who established a horrible environment. Just a heads up don't get any of there side sauces like buffalo and even there drinks like lemonade. My son got a lemonade and said it was horrible so I decided to try it. I met a friend here today for brunch. The place was pretty crowded but we had reservation so we got seated immediately. The restaurant is very open and bright because it's kind of like an outdoor indoor situation going on where you can sit outside or you can sit inside but you still have the outside as well. It was a Really mellow and chill vibe. Our waiter was on point with taking our order and was extremely nice but took a while to check on us at times. I had the garden scramble which came with sweet potato, broccolini, scrambled eggs, and I ordered chicken sausage to go in it to. It was delicious but the sweet potatoes were a little too charred for my liking. It was light yet filling. My friend had a bowl with all kinds of veggies with grilled chicken. It looked very healthy and she said it's her favorite. I had the rose sangria which was refreshing. This was my second time here after a few years And something is definitely different cause I did not remember this place being so bland. The food is so mid, semi-cold, bland and disappointing. The portion will also leave you hungry honestly. I can't say anything bad about the overall atmosphere it is great but my God the food is not worth coming back here. Service is also weak, the staff Is very friendly but they're not attentive at all. My friend had to send her dish back because of undercooked chicken. Brunch time drinks were ok very watered down. Had dinner with my family March 1st. Kayla was our server and she was very thorough and pleasant . She gave us some of her favorite items and also told us the most ordered items by customers. My family decided on ordering the SZA CZA salad which was my favorite of the two salads, chopped salad, meatloaf sliders, charred cauliflower, pesto pasta and we added chicken for protein, Lasagne Al Pesto, Grass Fed Meatloaf, all American Burger with roasted honey glazed carrots, Chicken Parm and the kids cheese pizza. EVERY single meal was so fresh and full of flavor. We all want to go back. There is 2 sides of the restaurant with patio seating in the middle, also dog friendly. There is a pretty cool outside hand wash station to wash hands before your meal. For the amount of food we got our bill was decent priced. We didn't have room for dessert but next time I'll save room. I conveniently paid for our bill on inKind and received a discount. Definitely can't wait to go back and try something else. Lots of fairly healthy options found here at a decent price point for dining out considering that they try to include organic items. The portions are on the smaller side and service was a bit slow during weekday lunch time but I appreciated the open kitchen and airy seating available. The kale salad side was simple but delicious and the turkey burger with gouda cheese was pretty good too. Basic, but that's what I wanted. I generally really like this restaurant but just have a terrible service experience. I came in at 8:30 on my way home from a work event to order some dinner to go I was told it would be about a 10 minute wait which is perfectly reasonable even 15 or 20 minutes is reasonable. After almost 30 minutes I went back to the desk to try and get someone to check on my order. Numerous servers walked by me without asking if I needed help nobody came to the desk, even though I was obviously standing there, and the dining room was almost empty. Instead, everybody was in the kitchen, talking with each other and doing their cleanup tasks. Finally, my dinner came out without any apology for how long I've been waiting or the fact that I obviously hadn't been helped even though I've been standing at the desk in need of Service for several minutes. I know everyone is tired at the end of the night, but if you're open, you have to serve your customers. Hopefully this was just a one off. read more

Decided to stop by True Food Kitchen the other night and it did not disappoint! Ariel was our server and she took great care of us. She made wonderful recommendations on food and cocktails, and we went with every single one of them! She also made sure to check in with us throughout our dining experience to ensure that we were enjoying ourselves. We started with the Edamame Dumplings - dashi, white truffle oil, herbs. Loved the consistency of the dumplings and the broth it comes in is very flavorful. After that we moved on to the mains. We decided on the Chicken Sausage Pizza - crushed organic DiNapoli tomato, roasted fennel and smoked gouda. The crust was nice and crispy, and the pieces of fennel added a nice touch. We also got the Pan Seared Sea Bass - sustainable sea bass, umami, broccolini, roasted mushroom, charred onion, ancient grains, dashi and herbs. Love love love the umami flavor to this dish and the sea bass was cooked to perfection! Finally, for dessert, we got the Flourless Chocolate Cake - caramel, almond, vanilla ice cream and cacao nibs.
