Not the best but not bad. Cool fish tank up front, big wrap around booths - and paper lanterns were a nice touch. Miso soup came out fast but nothing to write home about, lacked tofu, and my veggie udon came out 10 minutes before the sushi. A co worker and me decided to go here for dinner. We were staying at one of the hotels in the immediate area so we strolled over. My coworker dined on sushi at PF Changs last night but I told him this place would be better. I have been to the one in West Ashley and remember it being pretty tasty. This place was a disappointment. We walked in and sat at a table top in the bar area. We were immediately approached and ordered water. It was a bit before the waitress came back for us to order drinks and food. I got spicy tuna and regular rolls and my buddy got pad thai. We sat for a solid five minutes without a word from anyone. I noticed our drinks sitting on the bar. I was assuming the waitress would come back and bring us our drinks but she didn't. I waited another 2-3 minutes and had to go to the bar to ask them to bring us our drinks. Nothing worse that a warm martini. I tried to grab the drinks but the bartender brought them our to us. After that, we still never saw our original waitress but we had someone else who was taking care of us, although not in an expedient manner. The food was average for both of us. My rolls were okay and the pad thai was very average. They had Yuengling bottles for $2 so that was a nice bonus, but the food was subpar. Do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. It's not very good, the alcohol selection is terrible, and the crowd can best be described as "assorted trash dinner boat for two". The place just looks low-end and depressing, the tuna tartare appetizer we got was paired with an over-the-top sweet peanut sauce that made it impossible to taste the actual tuna, which was probably a good thing. Then the sushi came out. I could smell it coming. You know you're getting horrible sushi when it comes with an aroma you can detect from several booths away. I tried two pieces, just to be brave, and couldn't finish it, and I've eaten Duane Reade sushi. Overall, it was just bad. Not terrifyingly awful, but just overall bad. This is the 2nd time I've been to the Tsunami in Mount Pleasant, and NEVER AGAIN. Went there once in 2010. Was mediocre. Tried it this week, for Charleston's "Restaurant Week" and WHAT A DISAPPOINTMENT! First of all the "Deal" of "3 items for $20" was no deal. It was the same as their retail prices. Secondly the sushi rolls were mediocre at best. Third my wife's terriyaki chicken, she said the worst she's ever had. Fourth - Service, I can't stand it when the server brings out the appetizer WITH the main course. Rookie maneuver. Never going back to this location again! Better places to go to. read more

I used to go here all the time years ago, then not at all for a while but, I'm back on an uptick where Tsunami is definitely back on my radar. The happy hour is a major factor here with the half price apps and discounted drinks too. They've really stepped up their presentation game too. When my Sea Biscuit and Tuna Tartar came out I was thoroughly impressed. I prefer to sit in the bar area or out on the patio if the weather agrees. I've definitely had some iffy experiences in the dining room. My last time in, a friend and I were looking to share a few rolls before heading to a party on an empty stomach. There was some confusion about us being seated outside and we were completely forgotten about. Although this delayed my evening quite a bit, I was impressed that the manager came out to specifically take the blame and offered us a couple free appetizers for our trouble. I've been to Tsunami's on many many occasions. It's never my first choice for sushi in Mt. P, but I often find myself there because it is close to Palmetto Grande (movie theater next door) and they very often are offering a Groupon. Tsunami's isn't the worst place in the world to get sushi, and it is certainly edible...but go somewhere else if you can. Actually, the sushi isn't my biggest beef with Tsunami's, its the hibachi. It is downright terrible. Please, if you find yourself at Tsunami's, do not get any of the hibachi dinners. The rice is really oily, and the grilled veggies and meat taste like propane. I do have to give them some recognition for remodeling the space a bit and adding more tables. They used to have a stage at the far end of the dining area, that took up a lot of room. The service has also been better in more recent years. I don't know if it underwent a change in management but the servers are a lot more attentive than they used to be and I think the communication between the servers and the hostesses has also improved. I cannot comment on the bar scene here, but every time we have gone in the past, it seems to be a busy section and a lively crowd. The bar area is ample and is sectioned away from the main dining area. They have some covered outdoor seating, which I believe is mainly used as a smoking section. If you are specifically looking for good sushi in Mt. P, try Locals Bar or Tropical Sushi. If you are out to have some OK sushi with some cocktails, then Tsunami's will fit the bill just fine. read more

I personally love tsunami for a lot of different reasons. It's not the FIRST place I'd go for best sushi around but it's a great, inexpensive date night spot. They have a happy hour and 30 percent off the bill on Thursdays for military. Decent sushi... Rice a little dry/sticky at times but no real big complaints. On the plus side their shrimp and fried vegetables platter appetizer was very generous in size, a good substitute for an entry. The waitress poured a full glass of beer on my boyfriend! My boyfriend and I stopped in for HH spontaneously on our way to a nearby store. We sat at the bar, but had to wait an exceptionally long time for the staff to even acknowledge us. We ordered beer, edamame, and a few sushi rolls, which it also took an exceptionally long time to receive. Certainly it is understandable that during a busy time, patrons will have to wait longer. However, the waitress (there appeared to be only one working for both the tables and the bar) spent most of her time helping a few tables and ignoring others. We finally got our beer a few minutes before the sushi came out (so it was very full). The waitress, during her attempt to set the plate of sushi in front of us, knocked over the glass of beer which spilled all over my boyfriend. She was apologetic, and provided us with napkins and towels to clean up. However, she did not even offer to get him another beer! He had to ask her to do so. Further, given the extensive amount of liquid that had soaked through my boyfriends clothes, I would have expected at least a SMALL discount on our bill (maybe $5? maybe 10% off?). BUT SHE DID NOTHING! We couldn't believe it! She didn't even comp the beer she spilled on him! We will not be returning explicitly due to this poor customer service, which is honestly a shame, because the rolls were quite tasty (when we finally received them). read more

Tsunami is a great spot. You wouldn't necessarily think a Japanese steakhouse would be a good happy hour hang out, but this one defies the odds. The specials are some of the best in town. Discounted beer and liquor, and half price appetizers. And man, do they have some delicious appetizers. The Seabiscuit is a favorite among my friends. I'm a big fan of their baked mussels and crab wontons. Everything I've tried has been really tasty. And again - HALF PRICE! HH is weekdays 4-7. Oh, and the service is always great. She asked for our order, did not write it down and a few minutes later came back and made us tell her again because she had forgotten. I ordered the Yaki Udon which is noodles stir-fried in a soy based sauce. When my food came she brought a huge bowl of soup with the noodles in it. I told her this what not what I ordered. I have ordered this dish multiple times and it has never looked like this. She told me all noodle orders come in soup (which I knew wasn't true) She never once appologized or offered to bring me something different. I called the Tsunami downtown when we left and the hostess told me that the dish should not have been brought in soup. No matter what time of day I have eaten here, lunch, happy hour, dinner or latenight, there is never much of a crowd and I've never had to wait to be seated. However, the service itself can be on the inattentive/slack side so I have definitely had some downtime sitting at the table wondering where my server has gone. This is hit or miss though, several times I have gone and have A+ service. The food has always been pretty consistent and very good though, and if you pay attention to when they have Happy Hour or late night specials they end up having some unbeatable prices. The atmosphere is casual but the restaurant is well-kept, generally clean and thoughtfully decorated. There is a rather large fish tank when you first walk in (edging the bar area) and it is always very clean and tended to which is a huge plus. The main dining area of the restaurant is fairly large with lots of tables and booths, the bar area has high tops and counter seating, and there is a covered outdoor area with several tables right there off of the bar. One thing I wish was different is that the sushi chef station is tucked away in the far back left corner, with a few tables right there in front of it, but the bulk of the action is in other areas of the restaurant, so the sushi chef just kind of hangs out back there putting on a show for himself. Today I ordered take-out through their online system on their website for the first time. The ordering process was easy and straightforward, but when I went to pick it up he told me it was over $1 more than what online system had said. I pointed this out, thinking it was the 10% discount you get for ordering online that was missing, but he said he had taken the % off and it was still the higher price when he rang it up. It took him several minutes to correctly ring up my lunch bowl to be around the $8.99 total I had been shown online. He ended up charging me $8.83... actually less than what online had said... so I have no idea what he did/what happened but I do think they need to clear up the communication between their online ordering and the in restaurant POS system. read more

Here's some observations: -the military special is a really good deal -the rolls are pretty darn good, and the salmon was pleasing too -my friends said that the cocktails are really well made, though I didn't have one -miso soup is either so good you'll want two bowls, or too salty. take your chances -house salad with ginger dressing is awesome (well- the dressing makes it awesome) -pretty good fresh spring rolls Overall I really liked it. I didn't think the normal prices were very high either- $8 for a roll? Kind of seems average priced to me. Then again I haven't lived in Charleston long, maybe prices are lower here. Yum yum yum! Itamae Shin Komatsu is from Tokyo, Japan, so you know your sushi is done right. He has a lot of experience and a flair for food styling. Prices are so low it's silly. $5-6/roll. Normally I just have rolls. I returned the next day to try an entree. Today I enjoyed grilled Ahi Tuna. This Monday they had a special of 30% off, which I didn't even realize was in effect. My $14 plate of grilled sushi-grade tuna ended up being $9.80. That is just insanely low. Moreover, I have visited many sushi restaurants in 9 states in the last 6 months. This one is the most delicious of them all and feels authentic. Lastly, they pay attention to food styling. I have seen a few plates on their way to tables and they looked great. Can you believe the picture in this review only cost $9.80? In the two bowls of miso there wasn't even one piece of tofu or seaweed - literally just broth. They didn't give us any ginger in either container of sushi and the sushi tasted very unfresh and bland. So disappointing - I know the restaurant industry is hurting right now which is why we ordered food but if your going to delivery a sub-par product you shouldn't be in business anyways. read more

Being a military family, my husband and I came here religiously on Tuesdays for their Military Special... Good food, good service and a great value, was so nice that I even hosted a military wives book club here a few weeks ago on a Tuesday. Tonight was a different story. When we went to pay for the bill, and showed the manager our ID's (this is the manager that we've always had, every Tuesday), she informed us that their policy only allowed for the active duty service member to receive the discount. When I questioned if this was a new policy, she informed me that it wasn't and that it has never been their policy to give the discount to anyone other than active duty. I explained how we and had always both received the discount, and that SHE had been the one to check our IDs. Then she exclaimed that she "never works on Tuesdays, this is the first Tuesday I'm here". That was a boldfaced lie. She's always been the person who has checked our IDs, we even confirmed with a server, she is always the working manager on Tuesdays. I informed her that due to her poor handling of the situation, we would not be returning to Tsunami and her response was a flat "ok" and she walked away. It is one thing to change your policy, it is another to LIE about it and mistreat a loyal customer. We will not be back and we will tell our friends about this awful experience as well. read more

For us, Tsunami is mainstream Sushi. It's mostly a location decision for us. We'll walk over while the car is being detailed or if we're just fast tracking it to someplace else. It's never horrible, nor is it exceptional. Good place to stop if you're shopping in Towne Center. They have to-go, dine-in and (so I hear) delivery. Servers are friendly, but sometimes inexperienced and/or overloaded. Unlike many sushi restaurants, sitting a the sushi bar is not a culinary experience. Most of the seats don't have a view of the sushi prep. They have a large patio area that's just ok. read more

The shrimp hibachi was ok. I wish they would have given me more shrimp. When I got my bill, they charged me $1 for fried rice and the waiter never informed me of the up charge. $1 is no big deal but i don't like hidden fees. I also had the shrimp tempura with zucchini and sweet potatoes. It was really greasy and bland. The volcano sushi was very good. The waiter was really nice and attentive to our table. read more

Never had dinner here but I have always been very happy with my lunch! If you're a lover of raw fish and spicy tuna, do yourself a favor and get the tsunami sashimi roll. No rice just fish and seaweed paper in a ponzu sauce. So good! The wait staff is pleasant and the sushi chefs are generous with not only the roll sizes but on occasion will serve you a delicious free appetizer while you wait for your food.
