The staff are very friendly and kind. They even gave us extra fare for the regular price. The location is a little odd, but the location does not matter when you're after good food. I was a bit worried with an open mind to dine here with my mother. Previous reviews tell confrontations with a nasty woman taking orders. We experienced none of this. We were greeted, had our order taken and thanked. The fish was 5*****~pipping hot and large portion. The prawns delicious. The batter or fry coating is very light and not greasy at all. It was perfect. Process was decent too. Only reason for not giving 5 ***** was the tartar sauce was a thin mayonnaise base with no herbs pickles or flavor. I've passed by this place countless times over the years, but never thought about eating here, until last night. For some reason, I'd been craving fried food all day, and this place just popped into my mind. When I walked in, I felt like I was the 1980's, and I don't mean that in a bad way. The building has an old coffee shop/diner vibe to it, which made me feel like it was legit. That smooth, contemporary Chiopotle/Starbucks/McDonald's vibe was not found here. I ended up ordering a meal that included fried fish and prawns, which came with fries. Had to pay extra for a soda. I was also really happy, because they had fried zucchini and mushrooms on the menu, which I love. You don't see that on the menu often anymore, so I had to get it. The total came to $27. Yea, it was a little pricey. Whatever. So I sat at a table near where I ordered the food, across from the soda fountain. The woman working the counter told me to sit in the back, near the window, as these row of tables were only for people ordering food to go. There was no one else in the place, so making me sit somewhere else didn't seem necessary. I'm paying nearly $30 to eat here. Can I at least sit where I want? So the food came out real quick. And wow, it looked good. The fish, prawns, and mushrooms were all huge. The fries were buried underneath the fish. I wish they would have given me more though. The lady also brought out tarter sauce, vinegar, ketchup, and mustard. Damn. The food was amazing. It was everything I wanted it to be. Hot, crispy, and very satisfying. You ever have one of those days where you have an intense craving for something, and had an optimistic expectation of how that will taste? Yea, this place met that expectation. The last two times we went the food was burnt. Coincidentally, we left no tip when ordering to go food, when we arrived home the food was burned. The lady at the counter is consistently rude and rarely engages in conversation and never smiles. I've lived in the neighborhood my whole life and been a customer as long as they've been in business. Apparently, they don't appreciate customers like us since the food is burned. No vinegar or lemon included in any of the paper bags. The food is not tasty. We can take that hint not to return. Terrible food and terrible unkind service. If you don't like your job either find another career or take classes on how to be more customer service friendly and cook your food properly. I just removed a 10 year old review that was 1 star. Here is why I changed the review. A couple weeks ago I purchased a three piece to go. They supplied the malt vinegar, tartar sauce and ketchup. I will say the person at the counter, she was nice and friendly. The order didn't take long and I took it home. I placed the ketchup and tartar sauces in small ceramic containers and placed the vinegar on the fish and chips. The vinegar was Heinz. It had virtually no flavour. The tartar sauce of their making left a bad taste in my mouth and the ketchup wasn't much better and was from a brand I have never seen Chef's Quality Ketchup. I did try a bit of the fish, I believe it was Alaskan Cod, and chips without sauces and it wasn't bad. The next day I stopped by the store and picked up some London Pub malt vinegar, Sarson's is usually considered the best and one or both are in most grocery store. I then got some Kraft tartar sauce and some Heinz ketchup. I grabbed another three piece. A younger gentleman was behind the counter this day. Also friendly. Order was out quickly and I went home and retried the meal. The new sauces made a huge improvement. I have had fish and chips from San Diego to Puget Sound and New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania. You can always tell when a business skimps. Most of them have good fish and chips but try to get something like Costco bulk sauces to save money. You are always better off with quality items especially if you use them regularly. read more

I called in my order 3 mins after they opened and the food was ready in no time! ( I ordered a 3 pc fish dinner and an extra pc on the side) The lady there was friendly and efficient. As soon as I got home to open bag, I was greeted with large fish filets! I took my first bite and man! The batter was so light and airy. The lady owner was rude and unfriendly to every single customer. At first, I gave her the benefit of the doubt since it was close to closing time--maybe she was just tired. But then they messed up my order and overcharged me. I ordered the seafood platter, which was supposed to include two oysters, scallops, and a piece of fish. I paid nearly $20 for a takeout order. Everyone else got their food before me, and when I asked about mine, the owner said they were still frying the scallops. When my order was finally ready, I politely asked for some malt vinegar. The owner snapped at me with an attitude and said, "You should have asked for vinegar when you ordered!" Seriously? Isn't it common sense for a restaurant to ask customers if they want condiments--especially for fish and chips? I didn't want to argue, so I just left. But when I got home and opened the box, I was absolutely disgusted. There were no scallops, no oysters, and no shrimp--just one dry piece of fish and some fries. Everything tasted bland, freezer-burned, and old. The fish was dry and completely flavorless. I paid nearly $20 for that? On top of that, the restaurant itself was dirty and smelly. The floors, tables, and chairs felt greasy, and no one seemed to be cleaning anything--not even between customers. Just a friendly warning: don't waste your money here. The food is excellent. I've been coming here since I moved back to Sacramento a little over a year ago. The food never disappoints and the service is always fast friendly and consistent!! Many years ago when I worked in the area, I came on my lunch break when the mom and dad were here. Back in the 90's. Now the brother and sister are here and sometimes the kids help out too. It's a warm friendly family business. It's always a pleasure seeing them and I come at least twice per week. I never ever have to wonder what my food will taste like. It is always the same percent of the time. I have a very sensitive stomach and everything is always fresh great quality and hot !!! Portion sizes are generous as well. So delicious. We ordered the Tugboat which is 9 pieces of fish plus chips and 1 coleslaw. He kindly gave us 2 extra coleslaws and and extra piece of fish which was very generous! The fish pieces are huge! I've been to London several times and this fish and chips is the closest I've found to the real thing here in the USA. Cole slaw was also really great and fresh. We only had to wait about 10 min for the food to be prepared (we were the only ones there). I could here him frying it which explains why the food tasted so fresh. The fries and fish were not salty and did not have an old greasy taste like you may expect. The batter on the fish is crunchy and flavorful. The fish itself is not dry and tasted super fresh. I was surprised! The fries were good as well! Not too salty and not bland. Overall, the service and food here was 10/10. Portions are huge and shareable for sure. For 3 of us, we had leftovers.
