I used to love this place. I live downtown. It was a bday celeb for me and my guy. His sister paid $300+ for the bill. I ordered the 8oz Bavette 37 Limousin beef. It was $37. Not that bad. It came with a spread of mashed potatoes that tasted like they came from a box. The beef ... It had more fat and vein, I couldn't even get the beef off while trying to scrape it with my fork/knife. Every time I thought I was chewing beef, I was chewing the fat. Now I understand where they get that saying... Anyway ... They brought it to "Chef". Apparently he didn't give a f*ck. They gave our table of four people, 1 free glass of wine but did not take the "Bavette" off my bill or even offer a free dessert. I'm not in love anymore, just in "like" with the food. Tullibee has been on my list for awhile and it was a last minute decision to come here. A friend had open spots in her reservation and had asked my boyfriend and I to join so of course we jumped on the opportunity! I've been seeing great pictures and had heard wonderful things, I was excited! Also, my friend had told me that reservations were hard to come by so if you're dying to try this place, I'd make reservations as soon as possible. The restaurant is located inside the new Hewing Hotel. The interior decor is absolutely beautiful. It had a woodsy and nature-inspired feel to it. It's a very intimate setting especially in the evening - most tables can accommodate between 2-4 people max is what it looked like. The staff are fun and friendly! Our waitress was attentive. She also gave us a quick run-over of the menu which was helpful. WHAT WE ORDERED: - Creamed Spinach - very flavorful but very, very salty - Turnip - not sure if it was the smoked fish that was crispy but it added a great texture to this dish - Crispy Potatoes - SO good! Crispy and the right amount of salty. This was my favorite dish - Wild Acres Chicken Breast - tender but bland - Norwegian Cod - very buttery but wasn't my cup of tea DESSERTS - Citrus Carrot Cake - SO REFRESHING and light and moist. My new kind of carrot cake, yummmmm! - Sweet Potato Pie - good but rich, I liked it but definitely couldn't have finished this one on my own Overall, food was flavorful but very salty. I really enjoyed the Creamed Spinach, Crispy Potatoes, and Citrus Carrot Cake the most. The biggest disappointment was that it was all overpriced considering the portion sizes were so small. At first I was kinda thrown off by all the hipsters but it ended up being a fine night. The place has lots of nice wood. The floors and walls had an impressive selection of reclaimed wood. Our server was fantastic we ordered a few starters that included the thick cu5 bacon .. the Rhode island oysters and crispy potatoes. The oysters were very good the presentation was beautiful and they went down well. They tasted very fresh. The potatoes were ok. The bacon omg was divine !! It melted in my mouth and had soo much flavor in it. One bite one this and it has the power to convert any vegan. The only thing only thing I regret is that I did not have 2. In had salmon for the main course and it was very good my wife had the pork loin and omg I almost felt like sending back the salmon after tasting it.. The pork loin paired well with the bacon.. I also had the mushrooms and well They have good flavor but I think we're a little too well done . The wine list was good and they even had some specialty drinks. My wife tried some drink with bee pollen and she claimed it was good but man it took 3 hours for her to finish it. To me it tasted like if they got a bunch of bees and they vomitted on s flower and then they scraped it off and put it in the glass. Over all the place is very good. Normally we would not seek out a dining establishment located inside a hotel, unless we were staying there. But, Tullibee caught our attention. From farm to table. The Hotel itself is beautiful and the ambiance of the restaurant is open yet inviting. The menu is chef driven with fresh ingredients. Husband and I shared a starter and two main dishes. Croquettes filled with duck breast and cheese-curds were yum. But what made it perfect was the smoked tomato sauce that accompanied them. The halibut had a lil less flavor setting atop leeks and a couple bites of purple potatoes with a kale blended dressing .. the veges were cooked to perfection We oohed and aaahed over the vegetarian dish which was cauliflower... a light spicy sauce and a poached duck egg to finish it off. Wonderful plating from the kitchen staff. I only wish I had another of Tullibee's old fashions to go with another order of the dessert. Every detail of the drink was great, even to the ice which has the logo melted in. We got one salad and burger which were exceptional! The salad was simple but crisp and fresh. My husband and I went for my birthday. We had the ribeye, broccolini, potatoes, and sourdough bread. All were phenomenal. They are very limited on ribeye so they said it's best to come early for that item. Definitely one of the best ribeyes we have had. Potatoes were amazing and the bread was very hearty. Finally, we had the chocolate dessert which makes definitely top 3 desserts of all time for us (if not number 1). Solid dinner all around. Great service, no complaints. I've always heard good things about Tullibee but hesitated giving this place a try because of the low Yelp ratings. Well, 8 of us finally decided to give this place a try during restaurant week and OH MY GOODNESS...THE FOOD WAS AMAZING!!!!! The tasting menu was the bomb. Best pork chop ever!! The only way I can describe it is that it's like eating the ribeye version of a pork chop. Both food and service was exceptionally memorable. It was so delicious that I felt I had to give this place some justice by sharing my experience. I don't even know how this place is not at least a 4-Star on Yelp. read more

Interesting spot. Service is great! Food is meh. Options are interesting! So this place looks great from the outside. You will see a smattering of nice cars parked in front of the lobby of the hewing hotel where the restaurant is located. The service is great as our waiter took a full 5 minutes to explain all the different options, the taste of the food and the specials. The food itself was about normal for a pricey steak restaurant. The interesting thing is that the restaurant get an entire cow or goat and then bases its menu on that. I got the steak filet that was the last one for the week. We also got the raw beef and saw the smoke lamb. The lamb looked the best but I was enticed by the steak being the last one from this particular organic cow. It was good, nothing great and probably not worth the 50$ price tag. The steak tar tar was phenomenal and definitely worth the 25$. I think overall it's a nice place and the bar looked great, I wouldn't say it was particularly memorable at all though. read more

After all of the tough early reviews and a mediocre experience, we decided to give the new Chef a shot. I am very glad that we did, it was a really good meal and experience. We started with their house Old Fashioned that is a nice, less sweet twist on the typical drink and a really good crafted Manhattan that was excellently balanced. This time we tried the Roasted Beets, which were the best version that I have had in a long time. Spicy granola and goat cheese made it really stand out. The Wild Rice Croquettes were tasty a bit of Cheese Curds meet Mr. Wild Rice. It sounds weird but really works. The Lefse and Sausage was a great combination that worked great on both fronts. We also had the Dry Aged Flat Iron Steak. Perfectly medium rare with a deep fig flavored Bordelaise. The Blue Cheese oil wasn't noticeable (so if you don't like that flavor don't let it deter you) and it really wasn't needed. We skipped dessert but did enjoy another well crafted cocktail on the rooftop bar. Overall this was a really good meal and we will be back. read more

My kiddo surprised me with Christmas day brunch reservations. He knew Tullibee was on my list of places I wanted to try. We both really liked the layout of the restaurant. The wait staff was great. The menu was pretty simple. I had the salmon toast. It was good but simple. My kiddo had the hash and he loved it. Said it was the best hash he's ever had. For me, the best part of our meal was catching up with the bartender we knew from a previous restaurant. I was hoping for a lot more from my experience at Tullibee. As of now, I feel there are plenty more restaurants in the same category with more extensive offerings (see my review of Fhima's). With that said, I will be going back to Tullibee for dinner. A fancy nordic restaurant in North Loop? YAS. Or so I thought. At first, I loved this place during the "hype" phase that brought me to the bar. It was a welcome break from the insanity that can be places like the Freehouse or Smack Shack at the "witching hours." The bar is five stars, but in all honesty there aren't THAT many bars that I have been to in the area that are far below that. Some places make up for bad drinks with great bartenders with awesome personas, or vice versa. The downside to this place, if you can call it that. Is that I might have walked into this place with expectations that were too high. I was expecting something new, more or less a Great-Lakes party in my mouth where everyone and their krumkake would be invited. But... it kind of fell flat. For a place named after a fish, the salmon was, just ok, nothing to write home about. Although it was mainly just the first bite that turned me off that was really salty. The braised beef was actually pretty decent. I've heard good things about the whole trout and such so maybe next time I will try that. I had high hopes for this place and want to love it. Like the bar, not so much the restaurant so far. Will update as I visit more which is only really a matter of time because it seems like its one of the only places thats not packed to the teeth on the weekend. read more

The only thing i enjoyed was the time i spend with a new friend...however i disliked the food & service. We ordered the hummus, fish & steak. The steak was okay but iv had much better. The local fish they offered was extremely horrible!! Ni taste n salty and we took one bite each thats how horrible it tasted. The only thing i liked was the bread & hummus. Also it took one and half hour for them to bring the two entrees out. Honestly i would not go here again. There are plenty of other places that offer better fish & steak. What a gem in the North Loop! Great spot for restaurant week, otherwise it could get a bit spendy. Our server was so nice and helpful but it seemed she was taking care of many tables and didn't have much time for us. The space feels lofty with high ceilings, exposed beams, and brick walls. It is beautifully designed and features lots of warm, distressed wood and leather upholstery. The ambience was on point for a romantic meal. For starters we suggest the shaved root veggies or Pork Wild Rice Sausage, which wasn't too spicy due to the rice. For the main course, I had the salmon and wow! It was paired with Brussel sprouts and bacon, lending to a complex flavor. The Braised Peterson Short Rib was also stellar and melts in your mouth! We finished with the rice pudding and Quince Galette and were pleasantly surprised by these non-conventional dessert options. Overall great spot for a romantic dinner or special occasion, or to enjoy a beautifully crafted cocktail after work. Cons were it was pricy and there seemed to be a lack of servers. Went here and it happened to be restaurant week! They had a 3 course meal complete with a paired wine selection! Got the arugula apple salad, salmon with roasted Brussel sprouts, and this amazing pear tart with lavender ice cream. All the wines paired perfectly as well. I've been to both the bar and restaurant now, so feel like I am eligible to finally write a review. Restaurant is overpriced and the food is okay--3 stars. For my money, I'd rather head to any of the other awesome places in the North Loop like Bachelor Farmer or Spoon and Stable. Brunch was fine as well, but not overwhelmingly good. The potatoes and sourdough at the restaurant are amazing and deserve 5 stars. Seriously, get the potatoes. The bar is a slightly different story. Good cocktails, with prices on par for the neighborhood. The burger is really good. It's not Parlour Burger level, which I dream about and is a proper noun as a result. Very good cheese plate as well. Moral of the story: head to the bar for good eats and drinks, skip the restaurant... except the potatoes. read more

I went to Tullibee after they first opened and was very disappointed. I can't find my original review but anyhow, I thought I would give it another chance since I heard there was a new chef. I wish I would have not taken that chance and a mistake I will not make again! The atmosphere and service was excellent. No issues there. As I said before the portion sizes are very small and extremely expensive for what you get. Nothing much changed there. Everything is a la carte so even after an expensive entree you have to shell out even more for side dishes. I was still hungry when I got home! A couple of other things. Tullibee bills themselves as a Scandinavian Restaurant. They are not and need to change this information. They may have been originally but not now. I took a guest there specifically for Scandinavian food and we were very disappointed. Second, they bill themselves as $$$ and not $$$$ as far as cost. They are expensive and need to let people know that. A couple of drinks, two entrees, one soup, one side was nearly $150! I don't mind paying money for good food, but not for this. There are many other restaurants in the North Loop and I would take Tullibee off of your list. read more

This place is so cool, I just wish the staff didn't think they were to cool to provide good service. Every single time I visit, the service is horrid. Last Saturday afternoon around 2:00, 4 customers at the bar. The two behind the bar just chatting about some sitcom show. Dropped some menus off and went back chatting right next to us forever, no like literally forever. It was bizarre. We almost left, as we should have... but we stayed. The cheese board was delicious. this place was terrible. it is not family friendly in the slightest. the portions are supposedly meant to be shared but it's hard to share when one plate is too small for a single person to begin with. the staff is so attentive that you feel rushed to clean a plate so they can remove it. the food is good but it doesn't matter because the portions and meal format are so confusing. it might be more enjoyable for one individual who eats like a bird but definitely not more than three people. the "thanksgiving experience" that they offer is terrible and quite honestly a ripoff. it was $75 per person and we weren't served half of the items listed on the menu. save your money. read more

Came here for Thanksgiving dinner and it was not good. There were 5 of us, 2 eating the meat dinner and the other 3 were doing the vegan. They brought out the starters for the non-vegans i but didn't bring the rest till they were done. When the starters came out for the vegans we were brought out only one until we asked for the other two. The meat was good but the vegans only had half a cauliflower to split between 3 of us. Everyone eating was supposed to get their own mashed potatoes, cranberries, and stuffing. We were only served 2 bowls of mashed potatoes and 1 bowl of cranberries. We had to ask for the stuffing and only one bowl was brought out. We also had to ask for the gravy which was brought after we were done with our mashed potatoes. When we got our pies we had to ask for 2 more for the vegans. Overall the food was very overpriced for how much we should of got. read more

What a treat! Came with a large group (9) on a Friday night and we had an amazing time. The service was exceptional as were the wine and cocktails. We had a wide a wide variety of appetizers, including the wheat bread with bacon jam (!!!) and honey butter. Loved the beef tartar too - very unique presentation and description - but truly just delicious. We really enjoyed our first experience at Tullibee. The serving staff was wonderful, knowledgable and respectful. We began with some amazing speciality cocktails. Truly the bartenders are skilled mixologists! My husband had the duck with a ceasar salad and I had the halibut. Both were really delicious. The sauces were perfect. Tullibee is the lumberjack-metrosexual that we all pine over, but are not sure if we are cool enough to date. It's sexy, decadent, and sophisticated, yet comfortable and welcoming. If you ever need to feel special treat yourself to a night at Tullibee. Typically I steer clear of "complicated" menus because I find them pretentious and overstated. I am glad I risked having to ask the server what 80% of the menu items were because this chef knows what he doing. The food isn't complicated, it's complex. The ingredients in every dish we got were fresh, inspired and married impeccably well. Thank you Chef Nonas for showing me the light. Apparently the folks behind the bar are also magicians. I was interested in a mock-tail, which are not available on the menu. The server asked me what I fancied in a drink and arrived back at my table with one of the most delicious, refreshing and fun looking drinks I've ever had. My companions also really enjoyed their manhattan and local beer. We shared a few dishes between the three of us and were completely satiated without needing dessert. Sourdough: just yum. Sometimes less is more, and this bread with cultured butter and potted cheese is a simple yet lovely plate to whet your appetite. The crispy potatoes: have left me yearning for just one more taste. I'd probably pick them for my last meal. Seriously, I haven't stopped talking about them. (Should I be embarrassed? Maybe. But I'm not). One night, I went with three snobby foodies (I promise, I'm not one myself...) and even they were knocked off their feet. I had a dish with duck and I was in heaven. Make sure to go with a group and get a selection of small plates--including the cheese plate. Take your time here and really enjoy the menu and the drinks. Their craft cocktails are also really fun and unique. The ambiance is northern Minnesota. It feels so authentically "cabin life" that you forget how expensive and luxury the place really is. Plus, with its pool table, comfortable seating, perfect lighting, and gorgeous view of downtown Minneapolis, you'll feel transported to a whole new world of relaxation. The one thing this place needs work on is its service. Too often the bartenders or wait staff forget to enter a ticket. I've gone probably 15 times since it opened and it's happened to me at least four times. That's pretty ridiculous. But, they are mostly pleasant people. The menu is sexy and electric with Scandinavian cuisine. This is my kind of menu. Chef Grae Nonas, the executive chef of this restaurant is very talented. He worked with Mario Batali. He is also the champion of the Cochon555 food event few months back. When I first tried his food at the Cochon555 event, I knew I had to check out this restaurant. From the appetizer down to dessert,everything tasted excellent. Every dish has probably more than 50 ingredients in it. It's that tasty. It's not very easy to forget the taste of the food we tried tonight! The service was also excellent! I love the high end interiors, rustic and chic decor with exposed timber beams. While the space was beautiful and in such a great location (can't wait to stay at the Hewing hotel) my lunch at Tullibee was very mediocre. Food was incredibly overpriced. A forgettable gravlax was served on...well..cottage cheese, on a single piece of toast for $15! A similarly priced burger served "with pickles" was nothing to write home about. My main question was how they could even mention the pickle on the menu considering that it was the size of my pinky finger and without any snap or crunch. Service was ok, but considering there seemed to be at least three servers manning a dining room with only four full tables, we didn't get much attention. Hopefully with time the menu will become more reasonable and service will become more attentive. I would love to come back to try drinks at the bar, but simply can't rationalize coming back for more food (and I live in Chicago where we wait four hours and pay $13 for burgers made with Cisco meat.) read more

Mediocre is generous. The second star is for the location and setting (great ambiance). Food is overpriced and bland. Cocktails are boring, the wine list is subpar, and the food is under-seasoned. To those coming to town, try Bachelor Farmer for a taste of our true Scandinavian roots. Beef Tartare: fine, but compared to the neighboring 112 Eatery it was mundane. Duck: $30 for a forgettable, semi-seasoned wing and breast of meat? Pass. Cod: Cooked well, but amateur flavor. For an inspired cod, head to Spoon & Stable. Sourdough: it's hard to mess up bread and butter. Price point is ridiculous for what is served. One can only assume this is for the location. Had a fabulous Restaurant Week menu at Tullibee. We were seated at the chefs table and thoroughly enjoyed watching and conversing with the chefs as they prepared our food. They have an in-house butcher and it shows. The smoked meat is the real star of this menu- we had lamb sausages that had so much flavor and Mangalesa pork chops that were nicely marbled and cooked to perfection. The accoutrements were paired perfectly. The Gouda potatoes paired nicely and the salmon had a perfect sear. Can't go wrong topping off the meal with a lingonberry sundae. I can't decide if this is a 3-star or a 3.5 stars or a 4 star review... It's a bit off putting when you have to run a gauntlet of hotel staff (door men, receptionists, random barkeepertypes) but none of them can point you to the actual restaurant which is...in the lobby of the hotel. The wide open warehouse lobby. So OK. We remarked on the spaciousness of the place and all our room and how confusing it was for two basically brooklynites to have SO MUCH ROOM in a restaurant. And a table SO BIG. Anyways. The atmosphere is a little twee with the cutsie leather envelopes for the tableware, etc. Like OK you're trying pretty hard here. I think the server was a bit off put by our brooklyny proclamations but we were just joking and not being assholes, I swear. The wine recommendation was excellent but didn't seem particularly informed. I'm not sure how to put those two thoughts together but there you go.
