A dozen of HK cafes popping up in SGV -- that offers extensive menu of HK style breakfast and entrees. During the weekend, I enjoy swinging by U2 Cafe to grab a hot milk tea (extra condensed milk, please) with an egg sandwich. The breakfast "snack" usually holds me up until 2PM for a late lunch and sure way to avoid crowd at most (if not all) restaurants in SGV. Oddly, I stopped by (again in the same afternoon) for lunch. I was quickly seated and ordered beef chow mein and steamed fish with extra ginger. The service was quick and the waitress was extra nice stopping by to fill up my HK milk tea without asking. Used to love this place over the years, but it has declined in overall quantity and quality unfortunately, and there are better HK diners in the immediate area. Like other places, milk tea or coffee comes with most breakfast items you order, and there is a Western menu with steak, pork, chicken, etc. and Chinese options like porridge. One of my old favorites that is unique to this place is the Spanish omelette, which is eggs mixed with pepper, bacon, mushrooms, but the egg is often undercooked and too runny for my liking these days. The chicken steak is not bad but a lot smaller than other places and more expensive. Service is similar to most other small Chinese restaurants. Won't be coming back too often mostly because of the higher prices. There's a reason why it's still easy to get seated even when it's late morning on a weekend. read more

After a long drive down from the Bay Area, my mom and I stopped by this cute cafe and it was absolutely amazing. It satisfied our hunger after driving for 5 hours. However, they have such a huge selection of items, my mom and I were wide eyed. But, we ended up selecting their happy hour Salt and Pepper Chicken Wings, and the build your own noodle soup. We also ordered the Baked Pork Chops from the regular menu. The soup was amazing but the portion a bit small. The chicken wings had a lot of flavor but again, there were like 6 wings for around $10.95. But those two both came with hot milk tea/coffee. We both got the hot milk tea and obviously it was so good. The flavor of the tea was strong and you get to adjust how much condensed milk/sweetness to add in. The baked rice was huge but it was also pretty good with a slight sweet to the tangy taste. The service was a bit slow but other than that it was really good. I'm not the biggest fan of fusion Asian dishes mostly because they tend to be just ok or just blah with flavors neither too strong nor flavorless depending on the dish you pick. Location: There are various ones around town, but the one I went to is on New Avenue and Valley Blvd in Monterey Park. Has it's own parking lot, but it can be a tight squeeze during peak times. Food: Shared dishes are the best here and what I ate wasn't my choice, but those of my family to feed everyone. There was a bowl of wonton soup with noodles that looked okay and was just okay according to the person who ordered it. A plate of mongolian beef with the beef that tasted like it had beef tenderizer in it so it was not that great for me. I got one dish that I was able to order and that was the vietnamese curry rice noodles with seafood. The food was just okay. The curry was almost non-existent and the seafood flavorless. About what I expected for a place like this. It's really just something to fill your stomach. So, I really couldn't recommend coming back here again. Summary: Fusion places are never really that good. You can a few dishes that are ok or good, but most often, I find them just blah. The good: I ordered fried chicken wings with spicy salt from GrubHub here and thought it was very fragrant and tasty. I liked all of the chopped green jalapenos on top. The skin was crunchy and the delivery came with foil to keep the chicken wings hot. You can order ahead online on their website as well. Their menu is massive and includes desserts (fruit, cheesecake, ice cream), salads, fresh juices in different combinations, kids meals, soups, pastas, rice dishes, sandwiches, hot pot, noodles, porridge and much more. They setup a pretty big outdoor dining area since COVID. The bad: I don't know if the top was sprinkled with the spicy salt or if it was MSG on top. For lunch, the portions were huge. I was able to feed a family of 4 two meals with the amount of food we got. In terms of flavor, the pork chops were flavorful and juicy. The fried rice was okay. It did lack the "wok" flavor. As for the roast pork with tofu, it was so salty! Even with rice, it tasted like there was at least 1 tablespoon of sauce in that tiny cup. There are just so many choices to eat in SGV, one of the reasons why I haven't been to U2 in years. Recently we visited with family for HK breakfast. They have a large outdoor patio which is perfect for distancing and bringing my doggo! We took the biggest round table and there was no wait when we arrived around 10:30am for a party of 9. I got the combo A which comes with a hot milk tea, satay beef macaroni and a ham and egg sandwich. I added a buttery bolo pineapple bun for good measures to share with my bro. For the table we also got: porridge, instant noodles with spam and egg, veggie omelette and more soup macaroni. Hubby was extra happy to learn that lunch is served all day as he was trying to eat healthier. He got the steam eggplants which came with white rice. We were so stuffed that we weren't hungry til about 7pm that night! Price was affordable and the service was excellent. I have to give an extra shout out to the super friendly workers here at U2, which is something hard to come by in a Cantonese restaurant. They were all in a good mood and service with a big smile. We ordered a simple fried rice dish which was extremely SALTY and a baked spaghetti bolognese which was just OKAY. I do like their new outdoor set up situation using their own parking lot with canopies for shade so it's definitely spacious and socially distanced - following COVID guidelines. I always like U2 Cafe for HK style breakfast. -Waitstaff are plentiful and always friendly. -HK butter bun is 1 per order and it is huge. Good choice -Salty pork and preserved egg congee is fantastic. Lots of preserved egg and they slice it in many bite size pieces. Several other restaurants put plenty of egg, but cut it into huge pieces. Also the salty pork is cubed and not shredded. I think that is because they are also a BBQ place and use their own prepared meat. Good choice -Meat and egg sandwiches are what you expect. Some are a triple decker with 3 slices of bread. U2 is a double decker with only 2 slices of bread but the bread is super soft. I recommend the spam and egg. The ham and egg is a super thin slice of ham. They really should put 2-3 slices of ham. Pass on the ham and egg. -HK donut is good. -Beef with macaroni soup is surprisely good. Again the meat tastes better probably because they BBQ it in-house. -HK egg waffle. Most places do not offer a HK egg waffle, so I always get one when available. Theirs is served beautifully in a cone cage and is crispy outside with a soft, fluffy inside. Good choice. This restaurant is in my regular rotation and should be in yours too. read more

Have enjoyed this family's HK diners for 25 years (they ran one of the popular then-modern HK cafe's in old chinatown starting in the 1990s). Since this has always been my preferred type of restaurant, I've enjoyed many (including some fantastic new ones with some standout menu items that have been opening over the last couple years), but in terms of the highest quality service and consistently great HK menu, I have not found one that offers every aspect of that mix (the Chinese favorites, Western, BBQ, curries etc) to this level. U2 also remodeled during covid (while keeping carefully selected hints of the y2k era) and update the favorites every few years to reflect changes in food trends while still maintaining the proper cozy diner vibe that only a generational restaurant like this can offer. read more

I have been going to U2 Cafe for the longest time, even when I travel from San Francisco. Now that I've moved here, I go more often. Today, was a different story, the service was very bad. I'd asked for a refill on my milk tea, the waiter spill it all over the cup. I usually ordered the noodles and 2 kinds of bbq for that set and it's $14.25. When the bill came, they charged me an extra $1.50 because I chose roast pork. I'd question them about it and they said you have to pay extra for that, I said it doesn't say on the menu. The other chose was the duck, I'd show them that they gave me all bones. She said next time request for the meat. I drive from Chino Hills to go there. I have been coming to this place since long time ago, and never had an issue until I came here on 10/1. My cousin is in town visiting, so I took him to enjoy some authentic Hong Kong style food. We were seated by a waiter who I am familiar with, and he was friendly and nice as usual. A waitress came over and took our order. We ordered via Cantonese (I am fluent by the way). My cousin ordered an udon, and I ordered chicken steak. The waitress asked me if I want rice or pasta in Cantonese. I asked if I can have French fries. She gave me an attitude and said "I already asked if you want French fries (she said French fries in English)." I was shocked as she was bit rude. She then turned and walked away. The udon was pretty bad. The broth is very watery. It is like udon in hot water, not even with the MSG packet. The chicken steak was good as usual that the chicken skin was very crispy. It was tender and flavorful. Two stars for the chicken steak. After we paid our bill, I asked the same waitress for some tape (in cantonese, I know it is odd) because my cousin needed to tape something in his car. She pointed to the other side "ask them!" I told her that someone directed me to come ask her. The waitress sounded very annoyed "what do you need again (in Cantonese)?" I told her tape in Cantonese. She said, "what?" The nice waiter brought me the tape patiently. The waitress then said "oh, tape (in English)." I wonder if I should start speaking English when I come to this authentic Hong Kong style restaurant next time. I do not mind speaking English if that will make the ordering process easier. The waitress will definitely benefit in some training as she could have ask me to speak to her in English. I also would like to give her benefit of the doubt as she might have a bad day. A classic Chinese restaurant with great options and fantastic portion sizes for the prices you pay. They have a small back room that can accommodate 20+ people. We called to see if they had room for our 15+ party. They readily gave us the back room with no fuss and provided quick and excellent service. Their food is also great. My wife and I got the Chinese sausage fried rice and the spicy salt pork. What's up: Ever find yourself coming to the same place over and over again because that's what you end up doing when someone establishes a routine? Somehow, this place became one of our go to places. Parking: There is a private lot that wraps around the side and back of the building. During the few times when the lot got full (rare occurrence), we resorted to the nearby street parking. Environment: There's two sections to this restaurant: U2 BBQ and U2 Cafe. The BBQ entrance is on the south end and the cafe entrance is towards the north near Valley Blvd. Regardless of which entrance you use, the place is connected on the inside. The BBQ section has the BBQ foods to-go such as roast pork, roast duck, and chicken, but they also have seats for eating. Restrooms are located in between the two sections. The cafe section has tables and booth seating. There's also a smaller secondary room towards the back. What was ordered: The last few times we dined here was for breakfast. They have American breakfast as well as the Hong Kong type. I got the Sausage, Scrambled Eggs with Toast; it comes with a choice of oatmeal or chicken macaroni soup. The Chicken Steak, Scrambled Eggs with Toast is nice and crispy. Although we came for breakfast, they did let us order off the lunch menu. The Braised E Noodle dish is great; it has a good flavor and a consistent chewy texture. Most meals also come with a free hot coffee or tea. Yay/Nay/Meh: Meh. Food overall is not bad. Depending on how busy it gets, the staff can be a bit forgetful when you ask for drink refills or hot sauce (totally understandable). This is one of my go-to restaurants. This time, I ordered fried tofu and baked seafood spaghetti with 2 sauces: tomato and white cream. I loved the fried tofu, crispy on the outside and tender inside. Dip the tofu in the soy sauce (not sure what else was in the sauce, but I know it is not just soy sauce) and YUMMY! As for the spaghett/noodle (which you can easily change it to rice), it was delicious as well. The seafood consists of fish, squid, shrimp, scallop, and some other veggies. There are a lot more dishes and entrees to try for sure, not to mention they have breakfast combo specials, lunch specials, afternoon menu, and dinner specials. I used to frequent this cafe when I was still a collage student. That was forever ago. Called up some long-time friends of mine recently to get a bite to eat and hang out and they suggested U2. I was very surprised to see that this place was still open. It's almost like a relic of the past to me. We dined here on a Friday Night at around 7pm. Food is still good. Prices have gone up, but nothing I wouldn't have expected considering how much time has passed. Relatively quiet for a Friday Night in my opinion, but I haven't really lived the Cafe Life in a long time.
