I work downtown and have eaten at Underground several times. Their slices of pizza are average, but their service is friendly enough. Today I felt like a calzone, so I walked over to get a pepperoni one. I didn't found out until after waiting 10 minutes for it (and watching about 20 people get their slices) that they make them to order and take a bit of time to bake. Ok, at least it's going to be fresh, I thought. (note, they won't tell you when you order it that it will take 10 minutes). Well, let me tell you it was certainly NOT worth the wait. Upon getting my calzone it had already been squeezed to the point that most of the contents, which looked like pink, chunky vomit, had squirted out all over the thing. Any true pizza place in NYC would pride itself at the very least about the fact they could not flatten their calzones. Aside from the fact that it wasn't a pepperoni one (it was some other mystery meat), the thing was disgusting. The sauce they used had almost no flavor, the meat bits, what ever they were had no flavor. The entire thing was a flavorless, flat as a pancake swamp of pink vomit. Gross. So, lesson learned... never order calzones from the Underground. If you go there, stick to the slices you can see behind the glass counter. read more

I've been lucky enough to catch this place when it's open, but it just so happens that whenever I crave pizza on Saturdays or Sundays they are closed. I just had the worst experience ordering online at this restaurant using Yelp/Grubhub. **This review is not for yelp..It is STRICTLY for the restaurant and the rude woman on the phone who gave poor customer service!**. I ordered penne pesto and added chicken for $3.00. On Yelp, it asks you for additional instructions.. so I asks if they can please add tomatoes, mushrooms, onions and garlic it didn't say anything about adding extra toppings for $2.00 each. A rude lady calls me to say I added additional toppings therefore it is $2 00 each. Nowhere does it say that on yelp/grubhub. She kept saying "yes , it does..people order all the time..and then asks me if I am going to pay cash or card...mmm..my order was already paid for on yelp!! She then stated my order was ready and the delivery was on it's way. Advice to her and this restaurant, they need to look at their order menu on YELP and make sure you would charge for additional toppings on Yelp before doing so. Such a fraud! Customer service was zero. The lady on the phone was super rude and I will never order from this place again!!So I had to cancel my order through Yelp. This is my favorite pizza spot in NYC. The pizza's cheap, crispy, and delicious. It's a bit of a hidden gem in Hanover square. The staff is always friendly and all around lovely. The only negative thing I have to say is that it isn't accessible. You have to climb up about six steps to get to the seating area. read more

The personal pizza that they offer for lunch is more akin to a small pizza... it was massive! The pizza was really good (I got pepperoni). Plus it delivers, which is great in bad weather. We were visiting NY and roaming around the financial district. We wanted to eat at Adrienne's pizza but upon getting there, realized that they didn't offer pizza slices. Our goal was to try different eateries rather than have a big lunch at one place, so we searched for pizza slices nearby and stumbled upon Underground Pizza. The place may only have less than 100 reviews - but their pizza was outstanding. The best part that I enjoyed about the pizza was the crust - it was so crunchy. My office orders from here all the time. We usually get a large plain and a Grandmother pizza, which is the absolute best out of all of them. I've gone in on occasion for a slice here and there, but I think the quality is best when the whole pie is ordered. My order has always been right, pizza has been hot, the sodas always cold. I called at 10:30 for three large pies to be delivered to a Wall Street-based office - not far, mind you -- for noon. They arrived at 12:40pm. I should not have paid for these pizzas, but I pitied the delivery guy who was adamant that it wasn't his fault. Pizza was actually pretty good; they just should work on their communications - I called twice and it still arrived 40 minutes late. Went here for a quick lunch while staying at a nearby hotel. A good non-nonsense pizza-by-the-slice joint. The spinach and artichoke pizza was a tasty vegetarian surprise and the meat lovers was also a tasty spicy kick. Excellent foldable slices for a reasonable deal. read more

Not sure where to start- but if you are a pizza lover like me and want real NYC pizza, than Underground Pizza is the one you have to try. The slices are huge but thin.. the crust is crunchy on the outside but nice and chewy in the middle...and they give a nice amount of toppings. The pizza is crispy and just perfect.. you haveee to try this place out. This place is solid, they have so many options and the best part they are super quick. You are in and out in a jiff and the pizza is always hot. Workers are great and super nice, they will get you whatever you need. What motivated me to eat there was the pics of the grandma pie. Unfortunately we were only two and ordering a whole would be too much. Now as deliciously looking are the pics of the grandmas pie I had the same high expectations for the rest of their slices. That wasn't the case here. I had a craving for a pizza yesterday at work and decided to order from Underground because it is super close and they offered a personal pie. Their minimum isn't as outlandish as other places in the area, which really helps! I ordered the personal fresh mozzarella pie and IT WAS SO GOOD I AM ORDERING IT AGAIN TODAY! The sauce is perfect (some pizza spots have too sweet sauce...this one is a perfect savory tomato sauce!), the crust thin but still tender enough that it doesn't taste like a cracker, the cheese was great.
