I ate here a decade ago, maybe longer. I remember the Sonic's were still in town. I recall not being all that impressed but the place was packed. After reading recent reviews, I thought I would give this place another try. Clearly they have consistency issues, a recent review talks about the food being far spicier than it's been and that was what attracted me. True szechaun food is spicy and people that can't handle it, should try Panda Express. My hot & sour was way too sour and could have been thickened a bit. I was there for lunch and tried the Mongolian Beef. It was hands down the smallest lunch portion I have ever seen, the entree wasn't much more than a tablespoon. They did however serve it with two portions of rice. The beef was okay, but I've had better. That said, I couldn't get past the small portion. The portion was so small that it would remind you of the kind of serving someone would take that just wanted a taste. The service was really slow, but it was also really friendly, I haven't been that impressed with how nice a server can be in a long time A+ for service, D for Speed of service and F for Value. That said as much as I want to try other items, I wouldn't risk spending money on another portion that size. I am going to say it again, THAT WAS THE SMALLEST PORTION I HAVE EVER SEEN! Ordered takeout: We found out there's a whole plant based menu and wanted to check it out. Overall, it's probably the place to go for stereotypical "chinese takeout" (think sweet, heavy batter, lots of sauce) and not for traditionally made dishes. And it is pretty heavy on the stomach and wallet too. Ultimately- I think there's a time, place and niche for the restaurant. For us, probably not on the top of the list to return to anytime soon. - Crispy Eggplant: This is definitely on me for not looking up the full description- I could only find the menu with dish names but saw this was a restaurant favorite. It's very soft thinly sliced eggplant in a thick batter (very un crispy after a 15 min ride in the car). The red sauce is very brightly colored and thick. It's addicting but in a "this is probably not good for me" sort of vibe. The cloyingness of the sweet sauce and the heavy battering soon follow suit. 3/5 - Dumplings- very heavy in small chop of tofu. I came here with my Mom because she lives in the mid-west and really wanted some Chinese! so we ordered won-ton soup, some pork strips, the entrees were veggies, kungpao and fried rice. all of it was just so good. I'm extremely impressed and happy I found my new Chinese food go-to. I've been looking for a spot that serves classic Chinese food recipes and Uptown China does just that, and they do it well! First of all, this restaurant has free parking available. For the area, this is a big plus. Now the restaurant. As you enter you are promptly greeted. The owner moves through the restaurant working and speaking to patrons. The service was attentive and courteous. I had the hot and sour soup. This is one of the best you'll find if hot and sour soup is one of your favorites. I also ordered Kung Pao chicken. It is recommended as a chef's favorite. The chicken Chen tastes as if it is marinated and had somewhat of a sweet taste. So not that spicy. Chicken appears to be dark meat. I prefer white meat in this dish, but overall it was pretty good. Recently had lunch at Uptown China who offer what I believe to be THE BEST Hot Sour Soup anywhere in Seattle. My go-to is their Sesame Chicken and it has never disappointed. Really good portions at this place. And unlike most places they actually listened when asked to put the sauce on the side. Sweet and sour chicken, General Tso's chicken, Combination Fried rice and fried chicken wings. Now I will say the fried chicken wings were juicy but not much flavor. I would give the food a 3 and a half 1/2 but the interior a 3. The staff were pretty absent and I felt the prices were a little high for the amount of food, it was mostly veggies after all. We were greeted immediately and told to sit wherever we would like to. We were handed menus shortly after(if you are looking for the plant based menu just ask and they will kindly bring it out to you). My bf ordered the Singapore rice noodles and loved it. The portions were very generous. The server was so nice. She checked in on us throughout our meal and even boxed it up for us when we were ready to leave. We visited Seattle for a few days and after a day of sight seeing we were looking for a nice place to have dinner. Uptown China had good reviews on Yelp and was close by, so we gave it a try. Boy, did we make the right choice! The restaurant is clean and bright with a relaxing vibe. The staff was very friendly. The owner, Yu-Mei came to our table and greeted us. We started off with the Sweet and Sour soup, which the menu claims is the best in Seattle. Well, after eating it I have to say it's the best on the entire West Coast. Delicious! It was just OK. The customer service was really great. The owner and the hostess were very kind and friendly. All the entrees that we had were just so/so... some were too salty (like the Mapo Tofu) some were too bland (like the fried rice) . Generally, Chinese leftovers are gone in a day and we still have a lot leftovers that will head to the garbage soon. Nothing was mouthwatering. American Chinese is a category of cuisine that I am not overly familiar with. I made a single pilgrimage to Bamboo Garden as part of my introduction to Seattle almost a decade ago. Online delivery services were still in their infancy then (remember when being able to Postmates something was exciting? I avoid ordering with them these days) or maybe I would have been more of a regular. As it was, by the time Bamboo Garden was back on my radar, it had become another casualty of the pandemic. Despite our superficial relationship, this was discomforting news for me - I suppose that Bamboo Garden was, in a way, representative of my early days in Seattle and while those are mostly not worthy of reminiscence, I still have a tenderness for them. Such discrepancies form the basis for much of my complicated relationship with this city, largely because that relationship can't be disentangled from my relationship with myself and my own personal growth. But, I digress. My other experience with American Chinese was a restaurant in my rural hometown. It was close to where both my best friend and I worked, and had options for both of us being vegetarian at the time. It was...not good, but not unlike the previous example, the fried wontons and heavily processed sweet and sour sauce became an iconic symbol of our friendship. Outside of those occasions, Chinese food is not something I ever really think about. I was going to say it was because of scant vegan options but I actually don't know if that's true, because I've never really looked. However, I recently heard Uptown has an entire vegan menu which alone is enough to guarantee I'll check it out at least once. BUT! It's also conveniently within walking distance of my partner's workplace, which got it bumped to the top of the list. I actually rather uncharacteristically dined in for my first visit (I know!). The server was very patient with my clinical indecisiveness, and kindly answered my questions about allergens. They have tofu, of course, and mock duck as vegan protein options. I opted for (Mongolian) tofu, of course, and was not disappointed. The tofu was cooked perfectly and I was happy with the overall flavor. I also ordered a cocktail, which was tasty and poured extremely generously (I'm a lightweight but was pretty buzzed off the one drink when we left, lol). It's a bit pricy but I felt like the portions were pretty generous (I got two meals out of mine and didn't order rice with it). And while it's definitely Americanized, the quality was better than I would usually expect for this type of fare. It also was not overly greasy. Delivery options aren't super great, tbh, so def more of a take-out place or a place to dine-in with friends if you want something casual that can double as a watering hole. Based on the reviews, we had high hopes, but were let down. Food was not good and lacked any flavor. Waitress acknowledged that we hadn't eaten much and apologized stating that she'd tell the cook. The service is good, our server was helpful, I initially picked mandarin chicken, she told me that it was bone in and took longer to make. This place is terrible. We ordered at 4:35 it said give them an hour to pick it up. I got there at 6 (COVID and Christmas businesses, I figured I would give them extra time). When I got there it had a lot of people hanging around inside waiting for their food. I asked the owner, Yu (who was working the front desk), about the order. She went in the back for a moment, came back out, and stated that they were busy and it would be another 25 minutes. I was frustrated, but understood, took a walk and came back. When I got back there were more people waiting, inside, and now Yu was making drinks at the bar - no one was in the front fielding inquiries about orders, there was a list of names for completed orders with numbers to have Yu call. There was no system of checking, there was food still waiting there from the hour ago when I first arrived, and other random orders. At one point one of the customers asked to just call the names on the orders waiting because everything was so backed up. Needless to say everything was extremely disorganized and off the rails. It had a number of customers in the same boat as me so I was getting skeptical. I got Yu's attention for my order and asked the status. She went back and came out apologizing for NOT having the order. Not only that but apparently they never even had my order! She then began to start trying to take my order. At that point I asked for a cancellation and refund. Yu had the audacity to ask me come back another day for the order (for free). Not happening. Look I understand it COVID, stuff is messed up and restaurants are trying their best, BUT if she would have told me that they didn't have the order when I came in the first time I could have just left and find food elsewhere - no problem.
