A gimmicky restaurant that pulls it all off. From the decor, to the wait staff's outfits (nothing crazy), to the exotically named cocktails and food, I'd say you can't go wrong. I can't even describe it other than seeds of BlackBerry with no flavor. I had the Mezcal margarita with jalapeño. It was not spicy, tasted water down, and very hard to drink. My other friend had the B- and it was not good. Skip the cocktails! The appetizers were actually good. We tried lamb meatballs, a little gamy, but with the white sauce it was delicious. Deviled eggs were quite tasty and the blackened alligator was spicy and flavorful. I had a Dracula burger and my friend had the vampire burger. Both of them were over cooked and had absolutely no flavor. I was terribly unimpressed. I also ordered a side of roasted Brussel sprouts. They were barely roasted and could have used a little bit more time in the roaster, and my friend had a side of grits that tasted like nothing. I usually like to try and dessert but they were out of the snowball and we were told it tasted like drinking watered down vodka so then I wanted to crème brûlée and they did not have crème brûlée available so we did not have dessert. I would have given this place three stars however, there was a cockroach crawling on the wall behind us so that brought it to two stars, and I could not wait to get the hell out of there. My experience at The New Orleans Vampire Café was alright. I echo the majority of others in that the ambiance and service were great, but the drinks were mediocre. Inside, the café is pretty small. I imagine this place can get packed between the weekend crowds and how volatile establishments can get when social media highlights a quirky dining/drinking experience. The drinks, however, are pretty average. My friends and I ordered the B- and the O- which seem to be ordered fairly often according to Yelp. The B- tasted like those Airborne immune system tablets -- an overwhelming taste of artificial orange, borderline medicinal. Everyone who ordered that pretty much held their breaths and chugged to at least (hopefully?) get a buzz. The O- on the contrary was refreshing and enjoyable. A very unique restaurant, of course with the name and in New Orleans that's obvious. The service by Katy S was stellar. She was knowledgeable, friendly and attentive to our needs. We had the shrimp and grits, which was very good. The sauce was tasty and the grits just right. The alligator Po boy with chips made in the kitchen were a perfect combo. The Po boy had a really tasty flavor with the seasonings on the meat. We shared bites of each entree and gave them both thumbs up. Thirty-two dollars for three sad, dried-out slices of meat, a handful of mushy grapes, a few chunks of cheese, and some scattered nuts. It looked like something thrown together from the back of a fridge--not even close to worth the price. Service was just as bad. Stopped in at random for drinks and a snack when we needed a break from exploring the city. We shared the Deluxe Charcuterie Board and had a few drinks. One of us did wine tasting flight (all okay wines), another the beer tasting flight (was referred to as good summer beers), a sangria (I think was the best tasting) and a B- (from the blood menu. Was super strong). The charcuterie was very tasty. There wasn't anything we didn't like on it and the meat was raved over. We shared an espresso crème brûlée. Which I fully expected disappointment from but was pleasantly surprised. It had a nice crust that cracked to perfection and a smooth espresso flavored custard beneath. The custard was cold and the sugar crust was hot so you know they made the crust as it was ordered. The customer service was wonderful. This was the very first place I ate when I arrived to New Orleans, though it was sort by accident. I have been wanting to check this place out because it just looked so cool, and the picture of the chocolate cake had drawn me in. But I meant to try it the next day. I came from another restaurant, one that had run out of all the food, and yet managed to stay open (??!!). I left, deflated, and kind of hangry on top of that, sadly making my way back to the hotel, when I look up and I see the sign for the Vampire Cafe. Welp, perhaps it was fate that drew me to the place, so Vampire Cafe it is for tonight! Honestly, I didn't know what to expect walking in. After getting the brush off from the last restaurant (which I vowed I wasn't going back to no, or ever in this century because I was just that put off), I thought they would simply ignore me because I wasn't cool enough or whatever. However, I was pleasantly surprised to be seated and served right away, which already made me feel a little more positive about my trip to New Orleans thus far (and it was only night one!) I ask my lovely server, who greeted me promptly with a smile, what she thought about their gumbo. No, I don't like gumbo, but I thought "While in New Orleans...", so I thought I'd give that a go. She it was "meh" and she'd give it 5/10. Oookay, as much as I greatly appreciated her honesty, my confidence in the trying to gumbo was shot to you-know-where. So I ask about the shrimp n grits, which I originally didn't want to try because I've had shrimp n grits many, many times in many, many places already. But when she said she loved their shrimp n grits, I was like "Okay, there's my sign. Shrimp n Grits it is!" I had been eyeing it anyway, and it was the first thing I zoned in on anyway. Another sign. Boy was I glad I got my server's input, because the Shrimp n Grits was not like any other I've eaten before. The grits were smooth and creamy with robust flavor. There was a nice balance of fat juicy shrimp and andouille sausage, which brought on a complex, spicy kick to it. But then best part--that gravy--oh that gravy. It had the nice sweet spicy heat to it that I'd expect in Louisiana cuisine. My server asked if I needed hot sauce to which I declined. It was perfect the way it was and really hit the spot after a long, anxious journey to get to New Orleans. I took my time eating my meal, and nobody was in a rush getting me out either. I took stock in the surrounding, appreciating the brick wall to the side, the chandeliers up overhead on the ceiling, and the vampire decor sitting right next to the window. There were bottles of wine displayed on racks against another wall, and with the candles and dim lighting, I very much felt like I was in an Ann Rice novel. My mood was getting better and better. But then...dessert....because "While in New Orleans...". I zoned in right away on the Dobberge Cake. Because my server had good taste, which I established with the Shrimp n Grits, I asked her what she thought of it. She said it was good, and so that's what I chose. It was either that or the Death by Chocolate cake, but the thing about the Dobberge cake is that it's a specialty Louisiana cake (did some research prior to coming out here) and I wanted to try as many foods that regional as possible. Once again, I made a good choice. It was white cake, layered between espresso cream so it kind of reminded me of tiramisu, but in cake form. The cake was light, and soft, so I was able to appreciate the coffee notes from the cream in between the layers. It is covered with fudge icing, which luckily, because the cake and filling were pretty light, was no overpowering. A group of us (5 people) purchased tickets to their High Tea brunch event at $95 each. Their website where tickets are purchased is awful. It doesn't give any specific details regarding information that is necessary. It just says hats are encouraged. So we all got dumb frou-frou hats and dresses just for this event. We drove almost 3 hours from where we live to New Orleans, only to find out there's a huge festival the same weekend (surprise!) which made traffic awful, and we ended up being late. Nowhere on the website, Facebook page, or email confirmation we got after buying the tickets said you must arrive promptly at 1:30 or else you forfeit your event and $95. Their lovely "hostess" (I say it that way because we don't believe she was just a hostess, despite her several over the top announcements that she's just a hostess) with the green hair told us there was nothing she could do since we were late, and we basically just lose our money because she isn't aware of any refund policy and it's our fault. She ushered us outside onto the sidewalk and told us to wait outside while she got in touch with the owner because a couple of women in our group refused to accept that we were collectively out $500 and she didn't see why we couldn't be given our tea cups and sandwiches that we paid so much money for. There were vacant tables, and not one person was wearing a hat, mind you... after about 15-20 minutes of back and forth, we were finally told that they were being generous and allowing us to have a $60 credit per person, but we had to order off the menu. So basically they were letting us come in to eat, but charging us $35 fee per person to do so. Stupid. I ordered the alligator poboy which was actually pretty spectacular, and a bowl of gumbo. The gumbo had no flavor. None. My friend tasted it and agreed. It was left uneaten on the table. We all ordered drinks from the blood bag drink menu and wouldn't you know, not a single one came out in a blood bag - but the people around us got theirs in a blood bag. I got the B- and it wasn't that good anyway. One of the ladies in our group is a vegetarian and only ordered an arugula salad and mashed potato bites. She was last to get her food. She didn't get the mashed potato bites until everyone else had actually finished their meals. She didn't even want them anymore. They looked like Taco Bell's cheesy fiesta potatoes, just without the cheese and sour cream. Our server (shirt dark hair girl with glasses) was a doll and did a great job. The green hair "hostess" seemed to go out of her way to try to make sure we didn't have a pleasant experience. (You can see from my other reviews that this isn't my typical type of review or way of thinking, and I leave positive reviews the majority of the time so that alone should tell you something.) We wanted to get our teacups that were included in the $95 each ticket we purchased, and she then tried to charge us $18 each. When our server brought our ticket showing the charges toward our credit, it was $253 so that left some money on the credit to get two teacups. She happily obliged and said she would go wrap and bag those up for us. Green hair girl comes to the table and informs us that our charges were actually $290, so we only had a $10 credit left. We told her nope, we already got the detailed printout and fought it. Once she saw that, she then said she would honor it. Like no kidding you'll honor it, that's all we got. This girl was a nightmare. Overall, the experience was absolutely NOT a good one. It was absolutely NOT worth $95, and I will absolutely NOT go back here again. The place itself wasn't even what you'd expect a "vampire cafe" to look like and they have single restrooms, to which a line was formed the entire time we were eating. Honestly, with the new place called the Vampire Apothecary, I would say this place is not worth the hype. Especially since you can get the blood bags from the Vampire Cafe at the Apothecary. I would say save your money and check out the other place. We got better service, better and more creative cocktails, and better vibes at the Apothecary. I think Vampire Cafe needs to step it up. I know New Orleans is a very chill and casual place, but service does matter at the end of the day. We came here to stay and spend money but we simply were not offered a chance to do that because of the indifference of the staff. The service was really the worst part. Multiple uncleaned empty tables to sit at but no one was cleaning them. We had to wait for 15 minutes for this poor woman to clean a table even though staff was standing around. Then when we got seated it was another 15 minutes just to get service. That is 30 minutes for pretty poor and kind of meh treatment. We stayed and got one drink and got out of there because the vibes were just bad, but we felt bad for the one staff member who worked so hard to get us seated in the first place. Out of all the places we visited in New Orleans, this was by far our least preferred. We waited to be seated as the sign suggested and the staff passed us 3 times before acknowledging us. One of the waiters was sitting at the bar and looked surprised when we finally asked if we could be seated. There weren't many vegan options and to top it off, the Vegan food made with animal stock and animal parts for seasoning... Staff looked bothered and was not attentive resulting in our party asking for updates on our food after sitting for over 45 minutes waiting. There were only a few people in the restaurant so it was unclear why we weren't kept abreast on our orders. The food eventually arrived and it was cold. And on top of that the young man who delivers our food had dirty nails and kept slicking his hair back. Definitely would not return under any circumstances. This felt like a tourist trap from the minute we walked in. And I usually don't hate tourist traps, unless they suck. The good: it was 12 of us and we made reservations and they were very accommodating. Our tables were ready by the time we arrived and everything worked out smoothly. The service was also top-notch. I'm not sure how they manage to stay friendly and calm, considering how packed this place gets. So yes -- shoutout to the amazing staff here that keeps it together no matter how hectic it gets. Also -- the experience. Drinking out of "blood bags" and going to a themed cafe is always fun at the end of the day, more so if you're in New Orleans. The not-so-good: The food and the drinks. I could barely taste the alcohol in the drinks, and I felt they were overpriced. The food was awful. I ordered a medium-well burger and it was so over cooked, to the point that I had to send it back, something I never do. Meanwhile, my friend ordered a well-done burger and hers came back pink (it was a different burger, so it's not like she accidentally grabbed mine). The appetizers were better than the entrées. Foods are very low par and mediocrities. Portion is outrageous small on the price they charged. Service is ok not anything way above and beyond but they informed you as soon as you walk through that door to dine in will be 20% tipping requirement added automatically. My family order appetizer and 3 Vampire burgers and 1 Draculas burger all requested at medium rare. Don't expect a grand vampire experience (or good customer service) but the food and drinks were worth the stop in. Such cool ambience. Pleasantly dim and stylishly decorated. This is where I'll be bringing out of town friend of the gothically inclined variety. Tried the B- which contains vodka, orange juice, Sprite, blue curacao, and V (their special dyed red vodka). It was quite colorful and refreshing, and packed a definite punch on an empty stomach. Prices are somewhat high on the main courses, which is why I stuck to drinks this time. Good service. Very attentive. My friend got the wine flight and charcuterie board and seemed happy with both. Our service was a very night young lady and wasn't overbearing but still checked up on us. My sister got the blood bag with alcohol and I got nonalcoholic. We both really enjoyed it! Tea with shots of booze in it. That's a real thing, they do it here, and my skepticism about it has been overturned. It's a good idea to put a shot in your tea, and you should go here and do it right now. Aside from that they have a good selection of beer and wine and they offer flights of both, with which you can add on a bit of cheese if you like. I did. I liked it. We stumbled on this cafe since it was one of the few restaurants open at 9pm on a sunday night. It was a quick walk from pat o'brien's (we were at the piano bar previously and what a time). The decor was themed down to the place settings. I thought it was creative how they named their drinks after blood types - we had the gin and the mojito and both were pretty great.
