This review is based on the PHO ONLY. The venue looks clean and small, with a few high chair seats. The service is relatively quick and pleasant. They apparently show some random movies at lunch on the tv next to the register, that was kind of entertaining that day when I ate alone and watched some scenes of Rango. Not good enough! I got the classic Vietnamese sandwich and it did not live up to expectations. Granted, I always get my bahn mi sandwiches in Brooklyn (HOLLA!) but I was willing to give other places a try. The wait to order and pick up for my sandwich took forever. It was super crowded in the afternoon lunch hour and there was barely any standing room. I didn't particularly enjoy the sandwich because it was made with ground pork. It wasn't even a real piece of pork on my bahn mi! What a mistake. I thought the pickled carrots and daikon were not pickled enough and didn't have any hint of vinegar. Uh oh. A new Vietnamese shop is in town for you lucky FiDi'ers. With reputable bahn mi hot spots such as Baoguette and the Bahn Mi Cart, will the well-touted Nicky's stand up to the competition?! I knew I had to try it to find out. Just off of Ann St. along Nassau St., is Nicky's, a small shop that has a total of 5 stools at 2 tables, and three cushioned seats along the storefront. A marble countertop separates the customers from the kitchen, where you can see the 3 chefs and 1 delivery boy hard at work. Along the left hand side is a small LCD TV playing DVD's (today they aired Avatar, yay!). There are 5 sandwiches to choose from. After you narrow down the sandwich you want (which I recommend getting the Classic Vietnamese Sandwich), you have a choice between a white or wheat baguette, and lastly, spicy or not spicy (or levels in between). Bahn mi's are prepared fresh averaging about 6 minutes to make. For those taking my recommendation of getting the Classic Vietnamese Sandwich, what you are handed is a 8.5" long x 3" wide toasted baguette filled with a generous portion of julienned pickled carrots, a cucumber slab, a few sprigs of cilantro, thin layer of mayo spread across one side of the bread, Vietnamese Ham, roasted ground pork and pate smothered on the other half of the baguette. All for $5.50, no tax. The baguette is smaller overall as compared to neighboring Baoguette and the Bahn Mi Cart. Pate and ground pork portions are slim, but you are treated to a perfectly crusted baguette along with a nice crispness from the cucumber, not too salty pate, flavorful ground pork and what actually tastes like Vietnamese Ham, not some imitation. Add all that to the subtle sourness from the pickled carrots, fresh cilantro, and you got one rocking bahn mi. And if you opted for the spicy version, which I did, a few slices of raw jalapeno will be thrown in to really add some heat to this sandwich. It even got my nose runny a little bit. Popped in here for a sandwich but got totally distacted by pho on the menu, so that's what I got. It was lovely. Enjoyed the broth. The beef was thinly sliced and came rare. Came with a lime (instead of the lemon that seems to be common round these parts). I enjoyed it. I will grant you this: I was terrifically hungry when I came in, so, who knows, maybe I had a horrible bowl of pho and loved it anyway. Either way, four stars. Went here for the Bahn Mi (Vietnamese sandwich) classic. Have eaten many if these all over nyc /other cities and this is hands down the worst version I've ever (tried) eaten. Thick gross slabs of asian spam instead of paper thin like everywhere else hardly any ground pork which wasn't really seasoned like elsewhere and the spice isn't mixed in w mayo as per usual but mayo spread then sliced thick rounds of jalapeño Perfect place for stoners and drunk frat boys. So, after Baoguette closed, I had been looking for a place to replace that emptiness in my stomach. Today, I thought Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches could be that place. I don't think it is. I went in and had a chicken sandwich. When I was asked if I wanted my sandwich to be spicy, I said yes. Some time passes and I get my sandwich and go back to work. I take a bite...good bread, tasty carrots (I love those carrots). Cucumber, which I'm not a huge fan of, but in a sandwich like this I never pick it out. No spice. No nothing. "Maybe they forgot, that's okay." I thought. Except they didn't. About half way through the sandwich, I found two lonely slices of jalapeno. At this point, it would be easier to believe that I ordered a mild sandwich and those two pieces got in their by mistake, but no, that's the "spicy" sandwich. Solid Bahn Mi. Nicky's is one of my favorite lunch spots. The Bahn Mi is always delicious and the delivery is fast. I've had lots of items from Nicky's: the Classic Vietnamese Sandwich, the Tofu Sandwich, the Summer Rolls and the Beef Pho Noodle Soup. My favorites are the Classic sandwich and the Beef Pho. The Classic Vietnamese Sandwich is your standard Bahn Mi - it comes with pate, cilantro, carrots and cucumber and it can be served on a white or wheat baguette. I usually go white - I know it's less healthy, but I just find it complements the flavor of the pate much better. The sandwich is flavorful and if you want a kick they can add Hoisin Sauce and Jalapenos. Whether you're new to Bahn Mi or a seasoned vet, this sandwich will surely delight you. The Tofu Sandwich isn't as tasty plain. It's a little bit bland - I'm normally a really big fan of tofu, but it helps when there's some sauce for the tofu to absorb flavor from, it really helps. I typically will order this one with the jalapenos and Hoisin Sauce. It really helps it overcome the bland flavor it has when you eat it plain. The Summer Rolls are a great snack! They contain little (yet whole) shrimp and lettuce and are served in a vermicelli wrap. They definitely won't fill you up and they are pretty plain by themselves, but they come with a sauce on the side that tastes delicious when paired together. I recommend splitting these with a friend - I really just like to have one with a sandwich (one order comes with two rolls). Since they aren't a flavor explosion and just exist to whet your appetite, you don't want to fill up on them! Finally, the Beef Pho is pretty standard. While it's not the most delicious pho I've ever had, it's always consistent! The pieces of meat are high quality and broth is tasty. The broth isn't as complex as others I've had, but they give you many sauces to go with it to flavor it to your desire. The noodles are pretty good as well! While it's not as fancy as the places that have handmade noodles, they still do the job to absorb flavor and provide that luscious texture that's desirable in a quality pho. Overall, Nicky's is consistent and dependable. While it's not the fanciest Vietnamese food I've ever had, I always know what I'm getting and can definitely rely on them whenever I'm craving Bahn Mi. I wanted some rich flavorful pho but was kind of disappointed since every time I've walked past it, the broth smells amazing. The noodles were indeed quite chewy which I really liked. The noodles lacked flavor because the broth wasn't rich enough. The price was also kind of high ($13) but the portions were relatively big and they gave you a lot of meat (I got the beef pho). I've been obsessed with pho for a good 10 years, so when I learned that Nicky's was within walking distance of my new office I was PUMPED. I have gladly eaten their pho for lunch for weeks straight since it's the perfect winter meal. It's totally worth the walk in the snow to enjoy the hot, delicious, flavorful broth. I've never eaten in the restaurant, so this is only about takeout, but it's the best takeout EVER. The thinly sliced meat is served raw so you can toss it in when you're ready, and it cooks in the broth to a perfect tenderness. They give you plenty of noodles, sprouts, cilantro, and peppers, as well as the perfect amount of hoisin and Sriracha. Of course, if you like it on the spicy side and you're getting takeout, definitely ask for more hot sauce. The one complaint I have is that they don't give you basil, but I can survive without. If you are someone who doesn't eat a lot, this soup is two meals in one. But me, well, I can't stop eating it once I've started! I've also tried their banh mi, which is also delicious. I only tried the basic sandwich, though, and my advice is not to order delivery or even to call ahead of time. Just order it when you get there and you'll only wait for a few minutes, and then it'll be the freshest possible. Otherwise the bread cools off and gets too crusty and a little tough. But the fillings are great! I also tried the shrimp summer rolls, which looked really good but had a weird flavor to them. The sauce only made it worse and made my office smell REALLY BAD for the rest of the day. I wouldn't recommend them, but I'm sure other people would like them. Just not my taste. This place used to be a different pho place, which is how I found it, but maybe it's still the same place? Anyway, it's a great spot for cheap and quick pho or banh mi or even both, with the half-half combo. I got the half-half, which price wise might not be the best deal: Whole banhmi ~$8, whole pho is ~$10, combo (which includes a water) is $11.50. But I'm the kind of person that likes variety in my meal. The banh mi was the clear favorite. Almost as good as eating in front of a mirror and watching myself shove it into my mouth. Pho is okay-- I got it with the pork chop, which came cut on the side, along with basil, lime, bean sprouts, and jalepeno. It's not the most flavorful broth, but for $10 in New York, I'll take it. This is the first time that I went here under new ownership. I was sick and my coworker was like, "Get some pho. Isn't it to your people like what matzo ball soup to Jewish people like yours?" I bounced and stopped here on my way home, hoping to douse myself in the elixir of pho broth spices and the various greens and herbs (bean sprouts, basil, cilantro, peppers, lime, and a bunch of others that I only know how to say in Vietnamese). The pho came and their version of greens on the side was shredded lettuce. Was this some sort of sick joke? I've never seen such phuckery in my life. Perhaps the staff's banter in Cantonese was hiding the fact that they were out of proper pho ingredients. As for the pho itself, it was a totally underwhelming broth with not much meat. I walk past this restaurant everyday on my way to work and thought I'd give it a try, and boy was I pleasantly surprised! I had the chicken sandwich and might I say that it was one of the best sandwiches I've ever had! The chicken was tender, the pickled carrots gave it a nice zing, and the cilantro was fresh. Good tasting food, very fast service. Great place for those who don't want to make the trip to chinatown, but compared to chinatown, smaller portions and slightly higher prices. The first thing you notice here is that there is very little room to sit. There are 4 little tables, some with 1 chair, some with 2. If you are lucky, someone will leave right as you order. The pho is well flavored, with the meat pre-cooked and then added to the pho instead of raw meat being cooked by the hot pho soup as most pho places would make it. This makes a distinctly different taste, but very good. However, the portions here are not large; compared to chinatown the bowls here are only maybe 60% or 70% of the size, while the price is considerably more expensive ($8 for pho while in CT you can get it for $5.) The vietnamese sandwiches here are also very delicious. I got the sardine vietnamese sandwich, it came with perfectly pickled carrot slices and cucumber, very fresh and crisp, and a special sauce that added an amazing taste. But the banh mi is considerably shorter and smaller than the banh mi at Banh Mi Saigon, and slightly more expensive at 5.50 per sandwich (compared to 3.50 to 5.00 per sandwich). For the financial district, if you have a craving for vietnamese food, this is the place to go, with great fresh ingredients and very good tasting food. While I became a fan, I would caution for some planning. Prepare to wait, and wait...even if people who ordered way after you get their order before you do. No room to sit (as in all spaces get taken up fast during lunch time), especially considering the wait. Use Seamless! (No I don't get paid for my Seamless reco) So far I've tried two sandwiches: Classic Vietnamese Sandwich and Pork Chop Sandwich. They are a different kind of sandwich (not your typical hero), in some ways unexpected, in some surprising, in some questionable but ultimately good and makes you come back and want to try some more. The most surprising and best part, and most unique, is the pickled carrots with a tang of cilantro. This gives the whole sandwich a pretty good kick to spice things up. Speaking of spicy, if you chose the spicy version, it is in fact spicy. Both the pork chop and the ham/ground meat in each sandwich (independently) are pretty darn good. My only peeve (although who am I to judge Nicky and her taste preference) the bread, while tastes good, leaves an odd crunch feeling in your mouth, so if I had to think of revising anything is the toasting of the bread. Also prepare for a messy eat. Although each sandwich is wrapped you will ultimately have all the different parts all over the place, including the pickled carrots or the ground beef. So if you can, have a plate under your sandwich so that you could capture all this fall-out goodness and eat it later. :) Next stop will definitely try a soup! So far my favorite place to get banh mi. Everything is made to order, so expect to wait a few minutes. The place is small and has limited seating, so I've only gotten take out. They have a TV at the front counter which I've seen playing chinese movies, Clash of the Titans, or whatever movie they decided to play that day. I like to think of it as a multicultural experience. The "kitchen" is an open space right behind the cash register. So you can see the food/drinks being made. I'm not sure if this was for the customer's satisfaction or the there just isn't have any space in the back, but I like being able to watch movie surprise and also make side glances at the "kitchen" to make sure my food/drinks are being made properly. Onto the important stuff, the food. So far I've only had the classic, but no complaints yet. I like that they offer a whole wheat or white baguette. I always get the wheat baguette to be "healthy". They don't toast it to the point of carving out the insides of my mouth, but it's got enough toast to it that I'm left with a bunch of crumbs at my desk which is just the way I like it. They have a nice proportion of meat, and the other half of the sandwich is carrots. The pate is slathered on quite evenly, and is by far the strongest flavor that you can taste. Since I like the taste of pate, I don't mind. It's better than tasting a carrot sandwich and feeling like a rabbit. I don't know what kind of pate they use, but it's a little heavier and oilier than the others that I've tried. Depending on your mood, that could be a good or a bad thing. Another reason I like this place is that they sell pearl milk tea. Seriously, I thought all banh mi places would know that pearl milk tea is a must. banh mi + pearl milk tea. Pho (which they also sell here) + pearl milk tea. Pearl milk tea + pearl milk tea. It just makes sense. Alas, some places haven't realized this necessity. Anyways, while I'm thankful that they have pearl milk tea, it's not great. You can see the powders in the "kitchen" in containers. And the drink still has a slight powder taste to it and is slightly too sweet. But still, pearl milk tea with banh mi is appreciated. All in all, a good place if you just need to pick up some banh mi and a drink. Prices are reasonable for lunch fare. It's a cold and rainy day and this place is right by my office, so I figured why not? There was nothing notably bad about the place, but it also wasn't exceptionally good. The broth was seasoned okay but leaned more towards the bland side and I found myself needing to add sauce to the broth. The noodle portions were on the small end, but this I didn't mind since I don't typically eat a lot anyway. Overall, it's by no stretch of the imagination the BEST pho I've had, but for a rainy day when I don't want to walk a lot and also want some warm soup to warm me up - it'll do just fine. You need to try the spicy pho that Sophie makes from a recipe she has brought back from Vietnam. It is a fragrant fresh gingered broth that is not over powered by just heat. I could drink this all day as is. The cut thin beef on top off perfectly cook noodles makes this dish a no regret great lunch/dinner. I would not hesitate to recommend this place to anyone.
