How have I not reviewed my favorite place? I have been going to WD for years. It is locally owned and holds a special place in my heart. They have great specials each day. The tuna melt is smashing. Smashing I tell you! I think it is the onion that wins me over on this one. The tortilla soup is the best in the area. It is not too thin and has plenty of meat to satisfy even a manly man. The white cheese is a unique touch compared to all the Tex mex American cheese nonsense around here. There are so many other reasons to eat here. The spinach chicken salad, the great tea options (green tea jasmine please) and of course the desserts. Orange cake is my staple. Every once in a while it is dry but that's rare. I order it every time so they probably know who wrote this review. The crew are very friendly and you never fail to run into one of the owners who remember everyone it seems. Very much the old home turned into a business. What else can you say when you're greeted by a grand staircase upon entering? Decorated with plates and picture and other items. It has a kitschy and friendly look. I of course had to go with a sandwich that had a plentiful amount of ingredients. A sandwich named Wayne's Excellent Hoagie. The hoagie had a soft, fresh texture and the meats were plentiful and flavorful. I think it could have used a little more if the Italian Dressing, but that's probably my personal taste. The past salad I had was average. There wasn't a whole lot of flavor too it and could have used more seasoning. Overall though it was a good experience and the staff was very friendly and helpful. With the cooler weather coming up, it will be nice to try out their patio for a nice meal out. read more

Easily my favorite lunch spot in SA. I've come here at least once a week for the past 6 months or so. The service, food, soup, and cookies are reliably excellent. Today I found out ownership is equally excellent. I ordered a side of soup but when it came I noticed it was delicious AND had some ingredients I am sensitive to. (I don't send things back - it was my fault for not asking about the ingredients). I quietly put it aside and went on eating my wrap. Shortly after a gentleman, whom I later learned to be the owner, approached and asked if I didn't care for the soup. I explained why I wasn't eating it and he insisted on bringing me a different soup. Wonderful atmosphere, great food, healthy choices and good people - you really can't ask for more than that. read more

I usually order either Wayne's Hoagie or the grilled cheese... mmmm! With a side of their delicious soup - the chicken tortilla is out of this world. =) It has a tendency to get pretty crowded in here though (both in the parking lot - since it's shared between 3 or 4 businesses in the immediate area - and inside). But the tables range from small intimate two-seater tables to the big honkin' picnic kinda tables too. Sit outdoors if you'd like. If you choose to sit upstairs, don't expect the size of the downstairs seating area to be the same above cause it's not. And make sure to leave your number on the stairs so the servers know that's where you are. Oh and the iced teas are really good! They have 5 different types to choose from plus regular. If you choose iced tea for your drink, you can definitely switch between them and try each one out if you'd like (think Madhatters' iced tea area). Great food though. W.D is my #1 go to lunch spot, especially on Tuesday's when they have the chipotle tomato bisque on special. I've never had such a delicious soup, it's the perfect combination of creamy tomato bisque and crushed red pepper heat, it leaves your mouth wanting more after each sip. You really can't go wrong with any of their sandwiches, but my favorite is the turkey club with layers of fresh turkey, swiss cheese and crispy bacon on fresh wheat bread or the three cheese grilled cheese on sourdough, definitely an adult version of the classic with a fresh sliced tomato. The wraps are great too, the turkey avocado and chicken caesar are great! And they do have salads for the health conscious, I just haven't had the will power to try them vs. the amazing sandwiches. Did I mention the cookies yet? These "big" cookies (Texas sizes would be more appropriate) never disappoint and the variety: chocolate chip, white chocolate chip, double chocolate chip, peanut butter, peanut butter chocolate chip (my personal fave), oatmeal raisin, cranberry orange oatmeal, sugar, and ranger. Great way to end a fantastic lunch! So, give it a try, if the line is out the door, wait- it doesn't take long- and the food comes out quick and oh so fresh. This was our first visit here and overall was very unimpressed. Service was sub-par. They were not busy when we arrived and there was only one person taking orders, while another was doing something else behind the counter. She later started making quite a racket throwing dishes into a tub while mumbling under her breath, and when she brought our food, she nearly threw the plates on the table as they hit the table with a loud clang. Around that time it started to get busy so she went to open the second register and yelled at the people in line that she was now open (using a very rude tone). Obviously she was in a grumpy mood and it clearly showed. The food was also sub-par. I ordered a Ruben with side Caesar salad. The Ruben was mediocre, was not on rye bread and was dripping with cheese, and that's all I really tasted. The Caesar salad was inedible, wilted and slightly browned lettuce, soggy croutons, almost like they gave us days old salad. I didn't bother to mention this to the grumpy lady for fear that she'd dump the salad in my lap or something. read more

W.D. Deli is the epitome of what a downtown deli should be. Great food, great service, great location. There's something to be said about being comfortable when eating comfort food & I always feel that way when I stop in to dine at this gem on Broadway. My favorite is the Ruben with the Chicken Chipotle Parmesan being a close second. Always fresh ingredients, fresh bread & plenty of sweet tea on tap. One of my favorite things about W.D. is the the boxes of old Trivial Pursuit cards that they have sitting at each table. It's a great conversation driver or something to entertain yourself with if dining alone. All in all it's the perfect lunch spot & well worth a visit. read more

This was a busy lunch break destination for myself and a coworker last Friday. The customer service was excellent and the lunch size portions were more than enough to fuel the remaining workday. My food was delicious and the man with the beard who cashed us out was kind enough to let me sample the giant cookie that I was eyeing. One of my favorite sandwiches places in San Antonio! The staff is friendly and super helpful. The sandwiches are delicious! Try the Cesar salad! They have sandwiches and soups of the day that are yummy too. My favorite is the spinach chicken salad on a toasted hoagie! What a great deli! Food is high quality, fresh, and flavorful. There are many options for vegetarians, vegans, and carnivores. Although the place was packed, we did not wait long in line and we're almost immediately greeted by staff. I decided to get the special of the day which was a melted Swiss and ham sandwich called the "Garlic Piglet", and it was totally delicious, with just a smattering of Dijon on top! I also got a cup of corn chowder which was pretty good, although not remarkable. The food arrived surprisingly fast and everyone was satisfied! Hard to believe for about the price of a fast food combo one can have a bowl of soup and half a sandwich with Generous portions. I had the potato soup and spinach chicken on rye. I was pleasantly surprised at how generous the portions are. I thought it would be just a cup of soup, it was a bowl... Flavors were delightful. For desert I tried their carrot cake. It was unique in the flavor, frosting was more sweet than sour. Nice chunks of carrots and finally the portion size bordered on absurd for one person. I also had a cup of their coffee which is the reason for knocking a star off. Don't come here for the coffee unless you like maxwell house or some other brand who haven't updated their product in a generation. Even then there is an off flavor, perhaps from their tap water. The staff was helpful with questions and when I asked for milk for the coffee (only creamers are provided) one went to get it immediately. Yum! Nom! I've been going to WD Deli for 15 years. This place is simply fantastic. I love their outstanding service, funky decor, and of course, their delicious food! Their sandwiches are to die for! My favorite- the Spinach Chicken! It's a mix of spinach and chicken (of course, duh!) plus lemon pepper, mayo, and something else I can't quite put my finger on. The freshly baked cookies are simply delic! Their Caesar Salad is the best in town, if you ask me. The dressing is obviously made fresh, as are the croutons. Simply simpatico! It's great that they offer a wide variety of teas to choose from, all of which seem to be brewed fresh several times per day. They have an upstairs area that's great for group meetings. It's a lot of fun that they have trivia cards on each table so you can quiz your dining companion while you wait for your freshly prepared food to arrive. They offer a wide variety of breads to choose from, more than some of these other "delis" out there. The ambiance is wonderful- I really dig how they change out the artwork on a regular basis. If you like the art enough, they'll sell it to you. They've supported some local school by putting a giant piece of student artwork out front. Cute place with shabby chic interior. When you first enter you get the welcoming of a southern house. The space is limited but there's more seating upstairs. If you sit upstairs, make sure to leave your number on the stairway so they can bring your food up. I went on a Friday afternoon for lunch and it was constantly busy and the line didn't really grow shorter the whole time we were there. You order and pay at the register first before seating yourselves. I had the half sandwich and soup combo choosing Dijon chicken salad sandwich and Tomato basil soup. They have a good variety of sweets to choose from near the register so it's hard to resist! I got the white chocolate cookie. The cookies here are huge here! My sandwich was pretty good but I didn't really taste much Dijon in it. I don't recommend the tomato basil soup here. It looks like diced tomato soup where the broth is separate and it literally taste like diced tomatoes in broth. My coworkers got better choices like the tortilla soup. The Mac and cheese looked amazing though! I would give this spot another shot. If it disappoints I'll just stick to their delicious cookies! read more

The egg salad itself didn't stand out (perhaps I'll try another sandwich next time). The tomato basil soup was good and had great color. I felt like I was eating my veggies! It did have a bit of a kick to it. Keep in mind this Kansas girl is sensitive to the spicy. I want to point out that they have excellent alternative sides like apples or carrots. I'm always a fan of this because I love having a side, but chips or fries are just plain unhealthy! (which is ok sometimes.) We didn't try dessert (sacrilege for me, really), but perhaps that's just more incentive to go back! There's a plentiful selection of soups and sandwiches, with many delicious side options. I ordered a southwest roast beef with a side of fruit and a kids grilled cheese for my son. The sandwiches are tasty. My only frustration is the usual PILE of meat, and I'm probably the only customer in America who complains about it. It still tastes very good! I will be back to try the chicken Caesar (my go-to). The portions are big and will leave you satisfied. You'll end up spending around $10 per adult. WD is unique; it seems it once was a home. There's two floors of seating. You place your order at the counter and get a number for your table. It was pretty busy during lunch on a Saturday, but there wasn't any wait. I took my mom here for a little mother son lunch mid-week. It was both of our first time here, and we were both very impressed. The food was very, very good. She got the turkey club and was very happy with it. I got the Rueben sandwich. I was very impressed, this is one of few places in San Antonio that truly got the Rueben right! Satisfying a requirement of the Tour de Broadway, I stopped in WD Deli today for the very first time. My twitter friends @anaflores and @regalaffair gave me their suggestions on what to eat. I went with Jennifer's idea this time. I had the Focaccia Supreme Turkey Sandwich with a side of potato salad. The sandwich was loaded w/ avocado, swiss cheese and sprouts and of course turkey, all sandwiched between two thick pieces of focaccia bread. Very tasty and accommodating. I was left with a satisfied smile on my face. Even the pickle garnish was delicious. The potato salad on the other hand, was a different story.
