Came here with my friend on a beautiful day. The restaurant is located right by the water and you can't beat the view. We had a reservation for lunch so there was no wait. Service was great, ambiance was great, what's lacking was actually the most important thing - food. We tried their oysters, which were delicious. Our waiter recommended the octopus appetizer, which is a cold salad base with cold grilled octopus. The octopus had a weird texture, kinda slimy, not my fav. The grilled fish entree was a ok. However, these were some of the WORST oysters I have ever had in my life. They straight up tasted FOUL. I don't know if we just got a bad batch the day we went, but it was awful. I've actually never had oysters that tasted rotten before. We got the max you can order too (25?) so joke was on my poor husband who had to consume most of it since I refused after about the 4th bad oyster. Celebrated our 7th wedding anniversary at Waterbar tonight. Got a last-minute reservation on Open Table for 8:30 inside for 2. We ubered over the bridge and got there around 8. They sat us inside right away. Our server was Yahir. We had a wonderful experience. We love oysters and immediately ordered two of each. It wasn't cheap-- but SO worth it. Every single oyster was fantastic. So much flavor, and so fresh! We also ordered drinks-- my husband ordered an old fashioned and I was going to order a Green Mile because I love mezcal, but Yahir suggested The Queen Bee (gin) and it was a great choice. Ordered several apps -- beet and kale salad, lobster bisque, and Kampachi Crudo. Kale salad was the perfect balance -- bit salty, but the cranberries balanced it. We needed some greens. Lobster bisque could've used some lobster. My husband doesn't usually like jams, but really liked the crudo. They split the salad and the bisque into two bowls which we really appreciated. Both mains-- lamb and miso cod-- were phenomenal. We particularly enjoyed the cod. A lot of miso cods end up being flavorless or watery, but this one was salted, crispy on the outside and perfectly paired. We didn't order any desserts, but they gave us a treat for our anniversary, as well as complimentary bubbles. Our bottle of wine (Malbec) was good. Beautiful ocean-front setting. The interior has some aquarium-like fish tanks that add to the seafood theme brilliantly! Recommend taking BART as there's a stop right across the street from Waterbar. Our waiter was kind and charismatic, despite him realizing that we weren't going to order any alcohol. Some waiters drop their service when they see the bill won't be huge, and consequently their tip. Clam Chowder 9.5/10: Seriously such a highlight. I shouldn't be so surprised but there's a slew of nicer restaurants that fall short on their chowder. This was a perfect balance. Would come back for it. Picture's portion looks small because they separated it into two bowls for sharing! Oysters 8/10: Buckley Bay and Drake's Bay were ok, but the flavor profiles felt more muted and sweet than saline. The shucking on one of them left shell bits. Pink moon was the priciest for good reason though, delicious! Tiger Prawns 7.5/10: Really great quality and tasted super fresh. Large prawns but at $28 for 5, I probably wouldn't order again. Prices reflect quality for sure though. Hamachi Crudo 6.5/10: Had high hopes because the ingredient composition sounds amazing, with stone fruit and hearts of palm incorporated. Was a bit disappointed as the chips were nice to scoop with and added texture, but took AWAY from the main components. Flavors just felt lackluster for what could be a great dish. Thanks Waterbar! First time at Waterbar. After hearing about it for so long, I was super excited to finally give it a try. Now it is a very cute space and has a lovely view of the bay bridge. But unfortunately the food really fell flat for me. I started with the single scallop app. Which was delicious. But wasn't memorable enough to stand up to its $18 price tag for a single scallop. For my main I had the short rib which I'm so sorry to say was incredibly bland. It was tender but that's about all it had going for it. I've been going to Waterbar consistently since moving to the Bay Area for their oyster happy hour, great views, and being dog friendly. However, during a recent visit, the quality of service was not what it used to be. Our group ordered oysters and 1 in particularly looked very shriveled up and not one that should be consumed, so I brought it up to an employee and they brought our server over, who gave us a judging look and agreed to bring us a replacement fresh oyster. And when we were getting ready to pay, our server, Matt, was pretty rude in that he just threw the check on our table and then again threw the pen to sign the receipt. Made a reservation for outdoor seating for a group and even confirmed in advance that we had 11 people. When we arrived, they said they couldn't accommodate us and seated us inside in a dark room -- completely defeating the purpose of coming for the waterfront view. What's worse, they refused to let us split into smaller tables and made no effort to fix the situation. Very disappointing experience. Don't rely on their reservation confirmations if your group size matters. Update: Management responded claiming our reservation was only confirmed for indoor dining. However, I have text confirmation from Waterbar stating: "Okay, we updated your reservation to be for 11 guests." If outdoor seating for 11 was not possible, that should have been communicated clearly before our arrival instead of after our entire group showed up expecting the waterfront experience. read more

Their patio area is cute, covered, and insulated from the cold. That was the only option for a window table at 1130 when they opened. I'm assuming the tables inside by the window weren't being seated to prevent over-seating the server or something. You don't feel like you're outside, and there are heaters if needed. The host said she was going to turn them on, but never did. I didn't mind because we have the same kind at the restaurant I work at, and they're not that powerful, and I wasn't cold. The server was alright, I guess he left us alone cause we were deep in conversation. I had the fish and chips, which was one massive piece of fish on top of fries. Do they really think that small ramekin of tartar sauce was enough for that? Well, I didn't finish the fish, so it was enough. The fish was so bland, absolutely no seasoning, but nicely fried. I should have known when the menu didn't say how many pieces it was, or I could have asked. But I'm glad it was just one, because I wouldn't eat any more of that unappetizing fish. The lemonade was not sweet; it tasted like lemon water. I thought about asking for sugar or some salt for the fries, but didn't see the server once the food was dropped off. The standard is that after 2 bites, you should check on your table to see how everything is so far. To make sure the correct order came, and if they need anything else. Toward the end of our meal, someone who looked like a manager came over to ask how things were. She also took our plates because we were done by then. The server came over with dessert menus and again to drop off the check. I will say one star is for the dessert. The pecan pie crème brûlée was good. I ate it so fast, effortlessly, the best part of the meal. It definitely made up for the disappointing fish & chips. Based on this meal, I probably wouldn't go back, but I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the rest of the menu has fish that's a little more flavorful. I doubt it because the fish in a fish & chips should always have some seasoning. And the rest of the menu seemed pretty basic. The crème brûlée was the star of our lunch, and I would consider trying Waterbar again so that I can order it for dessert. If your gut is telling you this place might be a bit overrated, then trust your gut, cause it is very overrated. read more

I used to come to this place for their amazing oyster happy hour when I lived in the Bay Area prior to 2020 and have been wanting to take my mom there. We happened to be in the area and decided to walk over there. Oyster happy hour is still there, at only $1.55/oyster (vs $1 pre-pandemic), which is still a crazy good deal these days, given their prime location overlooking the Bay Bridge and the ocean directly from the patio (or by the window inside / or at the bar area). We, two women, guzzled up 4 dozen of oysters (sweet and creamy, from British Columbia) :D, had some appetizers (charcuterie and cheese boards), in addition to a couple of glasses of bubbly and a beer. The food was also amazing. For starters we got the baked oysters. They were so flavorful and I was very impressed since I usually don't like baked oysters. For our entrees, we got the paella and the salmon. I'd pass on the paella (beautifully plated but the flavor just didn't really come through) but I'd 100% recommend the salmon. It tasted so yummy and the fish was so fresh and flaky. For dessert, I honestly had very low expectations since I thought the restaurant didn't specialize in desserts but was blown away by the strawberry shortcake. Worst dining experience I've had in years. First, we waited 15 minutes for them to bring us water. Our drinks also took a long time. I am gluten free and was told that it was no problem. They then brought my food with the gluten element on top and I had to wait longer for it to be remade. BTW, the menu is not marked with what is GF. We then had to ask twice for our 2nd drink. To make up for my meal not being right, they brought me a complimentary dessert WITH GLUTEN! (That was the absolutley last straw for me) We ended up only paying for our drinks - which does not make up for such a terrible night. I was in town last week for a conference and came here with my coworkers. The restaurant is beautiful and right on the water which is great for a pre or post picture session! Because we had a large party we didn't get seated until more people arrived. Our waiter was amazing and walked us through the entire menu. We started with oysters (baked and raw) and the octopus. I ordered the salmon as my entree. The baked oysters were by far my favorite as it was prepared so well followed by the octopus! We also ordered the corn and broccolini to share as a table. The corn was very flavorful and had a kick of spice to it which I loved! For dessert: we had the baklava, carrot cake and strawberry shortcake. The strawberry shortcake was the table's favorite. This had a tart taste to it which I loved * French Fries - standard and plentiful this hit the spot *Kumamomto oyster - I usually like these a lot but this tasted a little fishy to me *calamari - delicious and lightly battered you could tell these were fresh * halibut ceviche - this came in a coconut broth sauce and I loved it. So flavorful! The avocado and the crunchy chick peas made it even better * Chicken karaage - this was a huge hit on the table and everyone loved how crispy the chicken was. The sauce it came with was also delicious * Miso Cod- this is what I got for my main entree and I'll be honest I was very disappointed. The cod skin was way to salty and the broth lacked flavor. * Carrot cake - we got this for dessert and this was delicious. I loved how it came with ice cream which was the perfect combo * phyllo dough wrapped chocolate dessert - this was AMAZING... i would go back just for this. I have been to Waterbar and its partner restaurant next door - Epic a few times as both have beautiful bay views and outdoor dining!! We sat on the outdoor patio and though it was a cool night, the heat lamps made it very comfortable! Our waiter was nice enough but not particularly friendly or conversational but service was fast and professional. We shared with some drinks and their clam chowder which was delicious ! It had a little chili sauce which added some heat but just the right amount! It was my favorite dish of the night especially accompanied by their Sourdough bread!
