It's been ages since we dined in this restaurant. I used to come here quite often with my family, but over the years we stopped coming and of course the pandemic didn't help matters either. Sometime after life started to normalize again, we did place a take out order from here. This is the first time though in a very very very long time that I have actually dined in the restaurant. Ummm...I'm thinking it might almost be the last time I dine here. Might not even get take out from this restaurant either. No issues with the quality of the food. The food is still very good. But holy smokes...this place has gotten super expensive! I came here for a quick and simple meal with my mom. We'd had a super exhausting day. We needed something quick and simple so we could head back home and flop on our beds. We ordered just one dish to share, which was a Vegetable Fried Rice. Whoa...this one dish came to about $30 when all was said and done! It's one of the simplest dishes one could order in a Chinese restaurant and it came to $30. Could have chosen not to order it because of course I did see the price on the menu before ordering it, so...realized it was gonna cost a pretty penny. But as I said, we'd had a long day. We were way too tired to get up and look for anywhere else to eat. So we stomached the cost and now...I think I will not be coming back to this restaurant again. Do I recommend the food here? Sure. The food is good, and the portion of our Vegetable Fried Rice was generous. We had lots leftover to bring home. But...$30 for a plate of fried rice? That's ridiculous. Decided to come right after a medical appointment nearby with my family member. It was much more emptier than I thought as there were barely 10~12 people there in a place where it looks like it can seat at least quadruple that, if not more (the tables that wasn't walled off by glass walls that is likely used for parties). I haven't been here for a long time and decor wise, it's pretty much the same as it was before in the early 2000's as they don't seem to have changed much. We only ordered a plate of green vegetable, chow Mein and this beef rib thing with this rice noodle thing (sorry, I do not remember the name of this dish). Out of the 3, I feel like the one with the rice noodle thing with the beef is the most tastiest with the chowmein being the worst, I had food court fried noodles that tasted better than theirs and it costed a lot less. The service is really what I liked about it. The employees were very friendly in my opinion. When we realized there was a possible hair like thing in the vegetables, they immediately switched it for us with a new batch without question. A bit of a tip - I recommend asking to keep the plate of food with you on the table until they came with a new batch to prevent them from just giving you the same batch but just switched the plates. While it's definitely not going out of your way to come here but I do recommend coming here if you are in this neck of the woods and checking it out and see if there's hidden gems in the menu that tastes good.Crispy Chowmein read more

We came in as a family right after Remembrance Day. Six of us, four adults and two children. The restaurant was almost empty. I stood at the host desk while she blatantly ignored me, letting four groups walk in ahead of me without even acknowledging I existed. I felt invisible. The strangers she seated even turned and apologized for cutting in front, but it wasn't their fault. I waited patiently, but by the fourth attempt I had reached my limit and walked out. I have never yelled or swore at a restaurant worker in 43 years until today. While I am not proud of that, the level of disrespect pushed me into a place I have never been. After more than 20 years of loyalty, this was humiliating, infuriating, and completely unacceptable. Westview Oriental has lost this customer permanently. I will not be back. read more

I liked how the waitresses were proficient in Chinese/English. They are accomodating for parties and there is some private rooms with glass doors for banquet type of dining. The rooms are small though. Food was alright. Some dishes lacked flavor. It's right off the freeway. read more

I've been going here for the past 10 years or so, 5-6 times a year, and every, single, time they have provided excellent service and even better food! We always have the Dim Sum, and never leave a scrap of food or want for more...simply delicious!!!! After reading some reviews you have to be prepared to come here. If you want service start with a reservation, then be prepared, the place is busy, the staff are flying around...be prepared for that. I think most poor reviews come from people expecting a quieter environment, or perhaps less familiar with dim sum...yeah, you might have to ask for an item once or twice, but that's the nature of success....be patient, and enjoy the overall experience! read more

This is the most authentic chinese restaurant in North Vancouver that i've found. The dim sum is incredible. If you're looking for pedestrian mundane lemon chicken, this is not for you. This is the real deal. .I can't believe this place doesn't get 5 stars every day. There's nowhere else in North vancouver that I would go for really authentic chinese food. However, you will not get egg foo yung here or deep friedd egg rolls with plum sauce. Go to a canadian/chinese or Panda Express food place for that. Know your Chinese food people. read more

Went there with boyfriend last week for dim sum. Restaurant is super busy but servers are very attentive. The food left us something more to be desired. The custard buns are filled with paste that are of cane sugar taste instead of custard. The bbq Pork buns are also over sweetened with cane sugar. The seafood congee did not have much seafood in and tasted plain without soy sauce and pepper. I went close to the fish tank and some of the fish had their bellies turned up. I'm from Vancouver, but frankly, I love driving to North Van just for Westview. I come here both for the dimsum and the dinner menu. When I first tried this place, I was skeptical it would be comparable to any of the Chinese restaurants in Richmond or even Vancouver East. However, I was pleasantly surprised with both the quality of food and the service here. I prefer coming for dimsum on the weekdays as it is not as packed as the other restaurants around town. The shui mai and har gow (shrimp dumplings) were both decently sized, filling, and most importantly, delicious. These are the mainstays of any Chinese restaurant that serves dimsum, so if they are made well, then you know this place is good. The dinner menu consists of the usual dishes, but definitely try their stir fried dishes, and fried rice. Perfectly seasoned, but never too salty, nor bland. I'm surprised with some of the negative reviews regarding Westview, but for a Chinese restaurant, it actually has very prompt and efficient service. Food always comes out fast, and more importantly, piping hot. If you know Chinese food, you know it is best when it is served fresh and hot, either from the wok or the steamers. If you're in the area, definitely give this place a try, you won't regret it. Or, if you're like me, drive across the bridge just to give it a shot. read more

2.5 stars. Not the best, but certainly not the worst. With all the dim sum places in Vancouver and Richmond, WTF would this boy come to North Van for dim sum? I guess you have to keep an open mind and try everything at least once. When I see the sign that they "specialize" in Cantonese and Szechuan cuisine, I get skeptical, especially when they spoke Cantonese in there, and those two cuisines are worlds apart. Much like the little town cafes that "specializes" in Chinese and Western food. Hmmmm.... Anyways, the food was ok/mediocre. Steamed shrimp balls uses a bit of paste. The deep fried and steamed chicken feet were pretty abysmal. I personally don't eat this stuff, but the peeps that do at my table, avoided it. There is something to be said about that. I don't think they used chicken in the lotus wrapped sticky rice. It tasted like pork. The only thing that stood out was the steamed custard bun. It was actually quite good. read more

Food made me sick, full of salt, and they charge you for your take-out container, if you don't finish your meal. It's hard to find a clean Chinese restaurant and one that doesn't pack their food full of salt, an obvious indicator that they are trying to preserve their food for as long as possible. Westview Oriental is no exception. Aside from the awful night I had after eating their food, being charged for tea and a container was a surprise. I went there with my family after looking online at their menu. Even though they only have the 3 stars we figured we would give them the benefit of the doubt and give it a go. We walked in and the staff were very nice. We sat down and were served tea. Here is the issue; After opening the menu and looking at the items we realized that the prices were waaaay higher than the online menu. Not a dollar or two but $5+ per item. We sat there for about 5 minutes trying to decide what to do and in the end we decided to leave. I was perturbed that the prices were so high compared to the prices online and 100$ for a few dishes of Chinese seemed unreasonable. We ended up in west van at a great little spot and it was reasonable and delicious. If management sees this please let me know if we missed something like a daytime menu vs nighttime or something. To be honest we came to this plaza for Japanese food but they closed during mid afternoon. Rather than drive elsewhere why not try the other Asian in the plaza? Ordered shrimp har gow, curried octopus, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce and fried rice rolls in soy sauce and cashew chicken as well. As a Canadian born Asian I tend to be super picky and judgmental about Chinese food when I eat out. I can't help but compare it to what I can get at home or at other good Chinese restos. So..... The curried octopus tastes the same as every other version out there. Soya sauce rice noodle was quite tasty with a good amount of dark soy sauce which is the trick. The har gow seemed expensive but I can see why as they are ginormous dumplings stuffed with shrimp. Good rice pastry around them and no complaints here. The cashew chicken came from a time machine from some 1980 small town Chinese Canadian Restaurant. Chunks of carrot, celery, sliced button mushrooms, baby corn and green peas with chicken and a sparse handful of cashew nuts. Sad and time to retire this dated dish.... I would give the dim sum a 3.5 as it's on par with other places and the cashew chicken doesn't deserve much of anything so that knocks the rating down. Service was fine. read more

We couldn't make it over to Vancouver due to a time constraint and found this gem. We ordered the spicy shrimp, duck, bok choy and general tso's chicken. Food came out quickly and it hit the spot! Service was fast and our hostess/waitress was very friendly. This was a lovely alternative to making it to Chinatown in Vancouver. read more

I've been a regular at Westview over the years. However I've had a few bad experience recently. My largest concern is dirty plates and utensils. In one visit we got a folk with a piece of rice stuck to it, a ladle that was crusted with crap and my son had something floating in the bottle if his glass. Nasty. Staff seemed clueless in addressing it. Also expensive. It would be 1 star, but they do have generally good food. read more

This place definitely deserves 5 stars! My family and I go here every Xmas eve as well as many Friday or Saturday nights during the year. The service is great, the food is delicious and they always make space for families. We usually order 5+ dishes and I definitely have my favourites - whole crab, deep fried eggplant in sweet sauce, the fried chicken wings with garlic, and the wonton soup! These are just a few of my fave items! You're guaranteed to enjoy almost everything on this menu. Their flavour and sauces are out of this world I genuinely crave it on a monthly basis. This time around we ordered wonton soup, chicken lettuce wrap, dim sum, chowfun noodles with beef, eggplant in sweet sauce, black bean prawns, chicken wings, and green beans. Only place we could find open on Dec 25th so we came here and had prawn dumplings, shu-mai, radish cakes, sticky rice, and the xiao long bao. It was all pretty good, service was quick, and it was cheap (barely over 40 bucks for 2). My favorite thing was the prawn dumplings with its plump prawns. A big group for lunch - never the best idea, but we pre-ordered, as it was an official lunch. My first thoughts were: "Look at that missing chunk of ceiling board." "Oh, look. They've put up their Christmas lights. Or rather... have they taken them down since last Christmas?" "Ooo, water stains." The only consolation to its questionable interior decor was that it was busy. So busy. Had we not made reservations, the 40+ guests present would have gone home hungry. When food started coming to the tables, they came at us fast. That might have been a result of pre-ordering. The waiters seemed unpleasant, as they all are in Chinese restaurants. From the variety of dishes at our tables, my conclusion is that the cooking here is just OK. The better dishes: egg tofu with mushrooms and broccoli and deep fried squid. Some dim sum items were ordered as well. Unfortunately, nothing stood out of the ordinary. Came here for Saturday dim sum and it was quite good. Like Peter said, the prices aren't as good as you can find in Vancouver but it's also a hell of a lot easier to get a seat and find parking. Plus, you're on the North Shore! Bonus points right there. They don't do a cart system, but rather a selection sheet with a pencil, and everything came out quickly but not all at once, which was nice. It was all fresh and delicious and we of course ordered way too much (so I'll be having a nice little lunch today). We did find it a bit difficult to flag down a server to get our water refilled, but that could have been because there was a children's birthday party happening. What? Yeah, we were confused... what child wants dim sum for their birthday? But there they were, about 6 kids and their parents enjoying their lunch and having cake and singing and screaming. So that made it slightly less enjoyable but I have to assume this isn't a regular occurrence. Probably. So i think upon first glance at our 'party', the hostess just decided then and there. NO She took a little while to seat us and when she put us right by the drafty door I asked if we could sit at the vacant table in the middle of the restaurant. She huffed and told us she would have to clear it first. Next thing we knew she was taking us to the table at the other end RIGHT BY THE TOILET! i just kinda had to laugh. good lord. we ordered your typical dim sum fair and this was definitely at the lower end. the sticky rice barely had anything in it, some rando minced meat but nothing else. the gai lan was cold the second it hit the table. high point was the tea...because, well, it's hard to mess up. for $15 each, better places in town. read more

I picked up some shrimp fried rice today. Paid for it and did some last minute shopping. Came back and was told I hadn't paid for it. I told the man that I paid the lady before I left. He gave me the food and I was about to leave and he came running after me saying you didn't pay and I want the food back. I said no that I have already paid and I will not pay another $20.00. He tried to get into my granny cart but I stopped him. He then told me he was calling the police. I said go ahead and then told him I come here often and pulled down my mask. He then turned around and left not saying a word. No apologizes or anything. I will never go there again. By the way I'm 66 years old and have never been treated so poorly. 3.5 stars I've driven by this restaurant for many many years, but never stopped to have lunch until recently. I was pleasantly surprised by the selection of dim sum and the taste. The quality was very good and makes me regret driving over the bridge for many years to have dim sum when there was perfectly good dim sum right here on the North Shore at Westview Oriental Restaurant. In particular, the Ha Gow and spicy wontons were really good. The interior is quite clean and updated. Now, you wonder, why only 3.5 stars? Although I was impressed by the quality of the dim sum at this restaurant, I was very unimpressed by the fact they charged me for my tea (come on, this is always free in Chinese restaurnants!!!) . I was even more miffed that walking out the door, there was a sign that said you had to pay 20 cents for each fortune cookie and sauce packets. I mean, really? Can't believe they are nickle and diming the customers. I'm sure I'll be back, but just could not believe this ridiculousness. read more
