Well if are a working adult sometimes you just need to go out and let off some steam with your work partners in crime. I came here after work one day with some coworkers for happy hour and it was a great experience with great service. I enjoyed the happy hour selection and prices. And I couldn't drink that night BUT they have juice menu, and my little pink drink was fantastic. I could drink a pitcher of that! We ate tapas style eating the hummus plate, corn dogs, local plate and pulled pork sliders. All delicious!! And my ladies really enjoyed their margaritas. Oh and bonus, we went on a Wednesday which, come to find out was ladies night, so wines were all half off. I had heard good things about Whiskey Cake from friends and coworkers, but I was not prepared for how much I was going to be blown away by their service, interior, and food. Whiskey Cake is a multi-unit restaurant that prides themselves on their locally sourced menu items and their vast whiskey selection. The San Antonio location is situated next to Perry's at La Cantera on the northside of town off of 1604. If La Cantera mall is busy, parking will be at a premium, however most of the time there is plenty of spots either in the lot directly in front of the restaurant or a little ways behind it. The interior showcases a rustic-modern decor with high ceilings, stained wood, and exposed metal beams. The restaurant seems to be divided into two large seating sections. The first is high-top tables that can seat 6+ as well as bar seating, and the second is low-top tables that can seat 6+ and outdoor seating overlooking a street that runs down through the shops at La Cantera. The large windows surrounding the restaurant allow for a lot of natural light to enter during the day, however, once the sun went down it got pretty dark inside, and I'm fairly certain they dimmed the lights as well. I dined at Whiskey Cake with a party of 6 while the place was quite busy. Our server was fantastic when it came to menu knowledge for both the food and whiskeys, interacting with the toddler that was with our party, and for being all around friendly and helpful. Our party started off by ordering the local board, and I highly recommend a party of 2-4 ordering one. The meats, cheeses, bread/toast, and jam were so perfectly paired and curated. For our entrees we ordered 2x grilled salmons, 1x grilled sirloin, 1x shrimp and grain salad, 1x whiskey braised shortrib, and 1x piggyback rye'd. Everything came out together at the appropriate temperature for each dish, and it was all absolutely delicious. The things to note was that the salad was huge, the salmon were perfectly cooked, the sirloin was tender, the shortrib was fall-apart tender, and the risotto served with the sirloin was fantastic. We were very pleased with our experience at Whiskey Cake and will be back again soon. read more

I had heard so many good and bad reviews about this place that I had to try it myself. Boy was I not let down. It was obvious from the waiting time that it's a Saturday night hit. They make the wait comfortable with lots sitting room throughout and a great vibe. This prohibition/ Modern age/ rustic restaurant really is the right setting for anyone. There farm to table freshness really did surprise me and was SUCH A COOL experience, I've never seen anything like it. The appetizers and main dishes were well like I kept repeating... WOW.. WOW.. My husband had a whiskey flight and I had a margarita. The margarita was strong and fruity. We ordered the salmon and the vegetarian cauliflower bowl and both were amazing. First time I had it it was dripping with juice as it was cooked to perfection and at $14 with chips it's well worth it. This last time I had it I will say it wasn't as good, but still better than most probably just a different cook. When you first walk in, your seated by a very attentive host/hostess and led to your seating arrangement which you have multiple options to choose from. The restaurant is pretty dimly lit but when they open up the blinds there is beautiful natural lighting that fills the place. For starters, you must try the deviled eggs because they are freaking delicious. While they have many different items on the menu, I played it safe and went with the "Double Double" Cheeseburger! She was a huge sweetheart, very knowledgeable, and very patient as my partner and I browsed through the menu, as it was our first time here! A late birthday treat for me, if you will! ATMOSPHERE... We had a lovely meal suitable for a pescatarian at the Whiskey Cake--fried green tomatoes, Farmshuka cauliflower & rice bowl, salad and salmon. All was delish. The "Farmshuka" bowl was a hodgepodge of slightly spicy stewed veggies in a tomato sauce base with pan-braised chard, okra, peppers, chickpeas, crumbled feta, micro cilantro. and some type of breadcrumbs on top. I think I'm going to have to give more of these vegetarian dishes a chance. They are often full of flavor and not too heavy on my digestive system. read more

2 Stars = Could've Been Better Whiskey Cake is not as amazing as people have made it out to be. I think everyone hyped it up and I came in here with high expectations. It was simply mediocre. What is the best part of Whiskey Cake? The actual Whiskey Cake dessert. That was the best item we had from the menu. The dessert itself was crave-worthy. I loved how the torte itself was not too sweet and balanced so well with the roasted pecans and bourbon anglaise. OoOoo and the vanilla whipped cream went perfectly with it too! I was honestly expecting something overly sweet, but the dessert was very well balanced. I was full yet wanted another bite. Excellent item! We ordered the sandwich of the day which was basically the rotisserie sandwich in bread with pesto aioli. Nothing Special. Meh. We also ordered the Rotisserie Farm Bird...Again...nothing special. I think because this place is so trendy it can get away with the prices, but everything we had we could make at home. So the food should honestly be a 3/5, but I gave it 2/5. So what happened? We went to have an early bday dinner here. Wait time was an hour to an hour and a half. We decided to sit at the bar; no problem. Bartenders were great. Talking a lot, chatting, very attentive. Well, I guess the kitchen was backed up because it took us 50 minutes to get our food. The bartenders did a great job of being communicative and checking on the kitchen and letting us know when our ticket was up. So we see the server coming with our food. As the server is laying the plate down on the counter, the chicken falls right off the plate...well, half of the chicken. It rolls on the counter and everyone just stares at it including the server. I say, "oh no!" and she just stares at us and then the bird. So it's awkwardly quiet for a good 4-5 seconds until I say "Are we going to get another one?" to which our sharp astute bartender said "Yes we'll fix that right up". It almost felt like the female server who dropped the chicken was waiting for us to pick it up, put it back on our plate and say "no worries"... So we waited for a new piece of chicken (which may have been the same chicken that was dropped only reheated lol We joked about that, but who knows) We chowed down and found everything to be average. Again, good, but not memorable. Nothing that made my mouth water or cause my eyes to widen with surprise. When we were finishing up, we asked for a piece of whiskey cake. It took them 25 minutes to bring out the cake... Even one of the bartenders noticed it was taking long so she went to the kitchen to check on it. Personally, I don't get the hype of Whiskey Cake. I think it's overrated & overhyped, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't check it out. I'm just saying go with low expectations. The menu items are all familiar American foods with slightly different twists such as Pesto Aioli...which really isn't anything crazy...but to each their own... I do 110% recommend the actual whiskey cake. If you're craving something different for dessert then indulge in a piece of the whiskey cake. That for certain was memorable. read more

We also got the chicken and cheese melt, and while it was better than the burger, it still idled on the average mark. The concept was good but the chicken was void of any flavor whatsoever. The Aftermath: This place wasn't the worst or the best. The food was average across the board. It's rare that we don't finish our meals but most of what we ordered was left on the plate.
