TLDR - Why are you sitting there reading this? Get down to Wholly Bagel and chow down before they close! As a former New Yawker, I'm pretty picky when it comes to bagels. And these make the cut, so far as I am concerned. Wholly Bagel is a small place designed more for take-out. There's a couple bar-style seats and one table for 4 inside, with two more tables outside. But it's a fantastic kosher-style (not kosher) bagelry, and the best I've found in Austin. I went down to try the following: 1) The Nova Lox. This is a classic NYC combo using Nova Lox, which is a slightly less salty version of lox. You can get these here in many variants, here's what went into mine: Everything Bagel (that's a bagel topped with poppy seed, sesame seed, and onion) Slices of Nova Lox Scallion-infused cream cheese (worth it on its own) Tomatoes Sliced Red Onion Capers, and plenty of 'em Get this toasted, and eat it. You won't regret a bite. On that note, if you don't like fish? 2) The Reuben - sort of a bagel-ized take on the classic Rueben sandwich, which I got as follows: Everything Bagel (that's a bagel topped with poppy seed, sesame seed, and onion) Regular cream cheese Pastrami (You can also get corned beef. They're both Boar's Head premium meat.) Swiss cheese Skip the Sauerkraut! Get the Russian dressing Sauerkraut can make things too 'wet' so try it with just the dressing. Or ask for the 'kraut on the side, if you really need your lederhosen fix. As an added bonus, their coffee is pretty darned good; had the medium roast 'Bat City Blend' (either Batman drinks this or it's a nod to Austin's Congress Street Bats) and it's milder and more full-tasting than what you'll find at Starbucks. What else can I say? Everything here tastes damned good. This place scores a solid 5 out of 5 on the 'CTJ Scale', as noted below. 5 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Jesus good. Would be OK passing away after finishing a plate here. 4 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Mary good. Would be OK being seen eating here by Mother Mary. 3 out of 5 stars: Come-to-Joseph good. Ok so this place is good, but I'm writing this review because it could be better. I'm from nj, so let me give you my expert bagel advice. When I get a bagel w cream cheese from here, everything tastes amazing, however they barely put any cream cheese on it. Check out my picture to prove it. If I'm paying almost $4 for a bagel, please put a normal amount of cream cheese. Second off, the Italian sandwich is bomb BUT the meat is cut too thick. Us people from the tri state like our deli meat paper thin. If this is a New York bagel spot in Austin, let's do everything the New York way. NY AND NJ have the best bagels for a reason. I didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was a pretty decent bagel. I got the lox on everything. My only wish is that if I'm going to pay $10 for a lox bagel sandwich, to get more salmon than the serving I received. Yes yes yes. I don't know how it took me so long to get here. Wanting sweet? Savory? A combo? They got it!! The line was 4 people deep when I arrived around 10am on a Friday. There are many searches one goes through in life. The search for true love, the search for a career, the search for happiness. Then there's the search for the perfect bagel. This past weekend Wholy Bagel has fulfilled my prophecy in finding that perfect, crispy, chewy, flavorful bagel that I have been looking for in the past 11 years here in Austin. Growing up in the Midwest and living briefly in NYC, bagels and cream cheese are a way of life much like breakfast tacos are in TX. They're portable and great any time of the day. In Austin I've had to resort to HEB's bagels (ok), and Einstiens (better), but none of them lived up to my bagel expectations. I came across Wholy Bagel on Yelp and bookmarked a while back. Finally - early Saturday afternoon near William Cannon, I'm hungry and I look to Yelp to guide me when I make the Wholy Bagel connection. I called them up to ask for directions, turns out they were closing in 10 minutes (NOOO!). The girl was so nice - - she gave me directions and said not to worry - - just get there when I can and they'll likely be around, my order will depend on their inventory. Speed Racer kicks into gear and I locate Wholy Bagel, in the same area as the Gold's Gym (where I should be going instead). I walk in and notice all the NY Yankees memorabilia - and then I knew that this guy must know how to make bagels cuz he's from the right part of town. The owner was there, he knew I was coming, he was so gracious and nice. I got Salt, Asiago Cheese, Raisin, and Blueberry. You'll need cream cheese so I checked out the selection, which was phenomenal. So many choices!! I got Garlic & Herb, Green Onion, and Lox - - which she mentioned was just made. HOT DAMN!! I thank them and rushed to my car to give them a shot - - wow, Holy Moly, I'm finally in bagel heaven!! It was such a nostalgic experience finally finding the perfect bage in Austin, crispy on the outside and chewy and flavorful on the inside. The cream cheeses were superb, bursting with flavor, I recommend all 3 of mine, can't choose just one. I soon began to wonder - - when are they going to open a shop up north?!? I promise I will be there EVERY DAMN DAY because these bagels ROCK!!! Worth going out of our way to stop by this delicious bagel spot in South Austin! Fresh bagels, delicious cream cheese options (I looooved the Tomato Basil), and many options for sandwiches as well. I ordered the Egg meat and cheese with Sausage and Tomato Basil cream cheese and the egg was.... actually a real fried egg! So delicious. To update my original review, I LOVE Wholy Bagel. I go every single weekend as my Saturday morning splurge, but over time they have gotten a bit sloppy. I have had multiple instances where my sandwich has been incorrect and they have to remake it, or more recently I ordered and paid for an iced tea and they never gave it to me (until I made it halfway home and realized I never received it), or they make both of those errors and it ends up being a whole ordeal on what should have been a relaxing morning. I'll still be going back, but the service seems to be taking a dive as they are expanding. I'm not sure if its because they are so popular and are training new employees, but I recommend double-checking your order before you walk out the door! read more

Upon my first visit, I was treated badly by the staff as they were closing at 3.00pm. After discovering, when I paid for double meat, and only getting served one portion, the staff member disregarded me, and hung up the phone. I rarely write bad reviews because I truly don't wish to hurt a small business, especially when COVID has been so hard on them. Sometimes however, bad operators need to be called out. When you try everything to get it resolved and nothing improves, it's time. Wholy Bagel has good food and when they first opened, I went regularly. However, the service was often poor and after staff was rude to my 90-year old mother, so I had to complain. Someone working the store at the time was apologetic, so we tried again. I called to place a substantial catering order for a staff function and the person who answered the phone said "Can you call back later? We're really busy." Who says that? I tried to contact management and didn't hear back. So we went elsewhere and I haven't been back for a couple of years. Einstein's had closed early the other day and I stopped in to try to pick something up. There was one other customer in the shop, apparently waiting on an order. I assumed the one staff member out front was working on her order but it turned out he was cleaning something. He never looked up or said a word to me. Another person came out of the kitchen and started doing something with the coffee maker, also not looking up or saying a word to me. This went on for about 10 minutes and I really wanted to see how long they would continue without asking me if I needed any help. To my amazement, a third person came out of the kitchen, handed the woman in front of me her order, and went back in the kitchen ALSO without saying a word to me. The other two were still in the front area working on whatever task they had. So I literally stood there for 15 minutes and three different team members had no interest in helping me. I left and attempted to contact the owner via the website - AGAIN - but never heard back. This place may do well in the kitchen but the customer service is the worst I have ever encountered and every time I try to see if things are any better, it's more of the same. They continue to act this way and there is no indication it matters because it never changes. What a waste! You guys have lost literally thousands of dollars of business from me and for what? Because you can't train your staff to give the very minimum level of customer service, such as greeting someone who comes into your store and asking if they need help or responding to an email? I'm all for respecting others and keeping others safe no matter what my beliefs are, but when somebody gets really rude about standing back and almost has a sheer panic attack about it, it just spoils the entire experience.
