My parents are obsessed with this restaurant, deeming it their favorite Chinese restaurant in the city. I've admittedly never visited Won Kok even though I live walking distance purely because of the mediocre ratings, but it's actually frequently packed with a loyal Chinese customer base (who probably don't write reviews). I'd probably rate Won Kok a 4.5 for food, which I'll round up since other ratings are low. My parents have brought back leftovers from their visits, which have been yummy, but I loved my first visit there over the holidays. The place was packed with families sitting at round 10-person banquet tables, crabs and fish swimming in seafood tanks in the background, and staff bustling around before gathering for their late night meal themselves. The atmosphere was very 热闹 (lively and bustling with noise). In terms of food, our family's favorite is definitely the #44 BBQ duck (not the same as Peking duck--haven't tried that here yet). It's super flavorful, tender, and juicy, and you can get it as an a la carte dish for dinner or with rice for a lunch special. Second favorite is the #4 Beef brisket soup with turnip, which I love because it's on the healthier side and the broth is super tasty. I wasn't as excited about the hot chili crab, but I just find getting crab meat out too tiring; if the meat was already loose and the seasoning was directly on the crab meat instead of the breaded and fried shells, it would have been perfect. This place is my family's go-to restaurant when we need to celebrate a birthday/get together. The food, value and service are great here. They can accommodate my family of 10+ depending who's free. Our family always get the Peking duck, walnut prawns, vegetarian or lobster yee mein, dried scallop and egg white fried rice and pea sprouts. You can't go wrong with any of the dishes here! Ownership and chef changes may have happened but this restaurant stays consistently great. I often chuckle to myself as to why great Chinese restaurants bother to hand you menu's since I don't know how to order from them anyway. I generally just ask the wait staff what they have fresh and their recommendations, makes for a easier ordering method, but then again being fluent in their language goes a long way. On top of that I really don't understand some of the menu items tanslations. As always I order a bittermelon dish without hesitation and they do a wonderful job of cooking it. I also ordered another favorite of mine, the brisket in clear broth with turnips, For the vegetable dish, one can never go wrong with the pea sprouts cooked in garlic. I believe the soup ordered was a watercress, wow that is a fantastic way to start a meal with such a rich intense watercress infused soup. We came to Won Kok for our Chinese new year dinner. They gave us the entire upper floor even though there was only 10 of us. Service was excellent. Since I didn't order, I wasn't sure the specifics of what the dishes were. Everything tasted fine. Heard the chef from R&G came to this location and the food was delicious. Parking can be difficult but we came at 6 o'clock so we managed to find street parking. At the entrance, a lot of people were ordering takeout and the dining area was up the stairs. The menu had pictures, so it was easy to pick and order dishes. Our favorites was the beef and mixed mushrooms and the peking pork. The fried squab was really juicy and flavorful too. Our meal ended with complimentary dessert, taro and sago. If you don't want specifics, here is what this restaurant is: it's nothing spectacular. But sometimes my tastebuds don't want a roller coaster and we want a lazy river. This restaurant serves exactly what it advertises. Wonton Soup: a slightly thick soup with wonton, order a medium or large bowl to share with the table because it tastes amazing and will warm not only you sad pathetic soul, but your stomach as well. Sesame Chicken: when it comes to Chinese foods, I have a little more of an American Chinese tongue. Sesame chicken is a solid, their sauce is not too saucy and has the perfect sweet-ish taste. Clay Pot Tofu and Fish: (I do not know the official name) This is an amazing dish if you love tofu. A must-order dish here, it's tofu is wrapped in its skin and doused in this amazing sauce, accompanied by some fried, but softened fish. Won Kok is a great local spot for classic Cantonese dishes that are elevated from what you would typically see from Chinese restaurants. The dishes are not overly salty, sauced, or oily. Very high quality food with good customer service. The wok-fired dishes did not disappoint and the sautéed vegetables were so fresh and retained their crunch. This place used to be our family go to spot when we want to have a sit down dinner. After covid hit, we had a few take out here before and it was alright. However, our most recent visit showed this place had took a turn for the worse. We ordered a Claypot Tofu with fish and a Braisded Rock Cod fish fillet. As you see in thr picture below, not only are they basically identical dish, but each piece of fried fish has more flour than actual fish. Also the braised cod has a lot of chilli and spice in it even though it is not suppose to be a spicy dish. Also as for the Claypool fish rod, it was dry as the desert with zero humidity. Decided to try this place for New Years, because why not. We only ordered 3 things for pick up and it came to $66. Its my fault for not looking at the price prior but it didn't matter to me because I figured it should be decent food, (based on the reviews), and I'm willing to pay for good food. But it was extremely disappointing and a waste of money. The food wasn't that good and smelt heavily of peanut oil, all of it. Well, I ate here last night with family and must say it was just average Chinese food to me. We were given a complimentary Corn Soup that was tasteless. Clear broth, no seasoning, and a piece of carrot and corn slice in the broth. 2 stars We ordered the Sweet and Sour Spareribs which were tasty when it came to the sauce but like every dish it was heavily coated with oil (presume peanut oil). The meat was ok, not the best cut but was edible. The meat was slightly breaded which was a plus. 3 stars Other dishes included prawns with sautéed veggies and honey walnut prawns. This was the best dish of them all. Nice candied walnuts and plenty of them along with very lightly coated shrimp that were crisp with a slight coating of the sauce. This was on par with many other places. 3 stars Beef Chow Fun was ok but very oily again with the gravy mixing with the oil you could see the separation between the two. The gravy was tasty and the noodles would of been ok but too much oil for me. 2 stars Cashew Chicken had bland cashews and the sauce was ok. The chicken was in thin slices and strips and was all breast meat. Had they used salted cashews it would of been better or at least cooked the cashews in the sauce rather than putting plain cashews on top. 3 stars Overall the service was ok. Typical for a busy Chinese restaurant in S.F. On the plus side this place is 3 stories and would be excellent for an office party with folks who want inexpensive Chinese food. Won kok is my favorite Chinese dinner spot in San Francisco. I highly recommend calling in to make a reservation because this place gets packed. If you feel like taking a chance, get here super early and hopefully you will get seated. My favorite thing to get here would be the shrimps with eggs in them. They don't always offer this item, but if they do, get it! The shrimps are sweet and the eggs just has a nice texture as you bite into the clump of it. The pork leg here is also a must get. This restaurant is where Emmys use to be. The staff is very attentive. It was busy with Chinese people on a rainy Tuesday night so I was sure it was a good restaurant. They have really creative food. Their stuffed Chicken was tops. Their Barbecue Platter was filled with Juicy Soy Chicken, Roasted Duck,and Barbecue Pork. The Hong Kong Style Noodles had an abundant topping of Seafood .
