However, I didn't read reviews before so I didn't call ahead to order and I ended up waiting about 30 minutes outside while they got dozens of take out calls that they had to fill. Being Burmese Chinese, I had to check this spot out because it's hard to find Burmese food that hits the spot and feels like home. I only tried the yamo house noodles (we got 1 beef & 1 chicken) and lahpet thoke aka tea leaf salad. The noodles were garlicky and good. The tea lead salad was not up to my standards. The tea leaf flavor wasn't strong enough and my salad was too oily for some reason. I think it was mainly lettuce and I prefer cabbage in my lahpet thoke for better texture. Satisfied my cravings nonetheless. I'm not saying other higher end Burmese restaurants do any better. I'd want to try their ohn no khao swe (coconut curry chicken noodle soup) or mohinga (fish chowder soup) next time and see how they taste here. We called ahead for to-go and they just took our order without asking for any other info, not even our name. But there weren't any problems with picking up. It's small and busy, so I suggest just doing carry out. Would come back here again. Overall this place feels more authentic than the others. Also you just can't beat the price - super affordable. Solid food, filling portions. We came around 7pm on a Wednesday and there were 2-3 parties before us. The workers inside were super nice, and they clearly had been part of the community for a while since they greeted so many familiar faces. The wait for our order was a little long--about 30 minutes, but you could see that they were cooking this stuff fresh. We tried the house noodles with beef, house noodles with tofu, and tea leaf salad. The noodle dishes were solid--wish they were more saucy, but the proteins (beef and tofu) were really tasty. It came with a ton of noodles packed in. It was definitely more of a carb-heavy dish. I'd skip the tea leaf salad next time. It wasn't very unique or aromatic, and was pretty spicy. The house noodles are simple and delicious. The noodles are coated with a light layer of oil that really lets the other ingredients shine: the pork, fried garlic, cilantro, and optional chili oil add so much fragrance and flavor to the dish. It's a light meal that tastes like home, all while costing only $8 a bowl (just make sure to bring cash). The restaurant itself is a small hole in the wall with very limited seating, so expect a wait if you plan on dining in. For sure five stars. This place has everything and is everything. The hospitality, the taste, the vibe, and the the niche. Before my friend took me here, I have never heard of this place. All the dishes we ordered were delicious. I even ordered two more to go home with for the next day. I would highly recommend the tea leaf salads and the tofu house special. The pan-fried dumpings are great as well. I could taste they were made in house, not from Costco. The cold noddles was my least favorite. I think the sauce could be a bit more dense and spicy. One thing about Yamo: you gotta sauce this stuff up. First time I went in here and got house noodles and I was shocked by how bland it was. But after getting beef curry and trying every free liquid I could get my hands on, I can appreciate this spot. The meat is really well-seared; you can tell someone really knows their way around a wok. You gotta love how this place has no bullshit. Okay - I've tried to come here a few times but the group was either too large (would not try with more than two people) or Yamo would be closed, but we finally had a chance to stop by here on a weeknight. Can I just say - FINALLY. I'm not an expert in Burmese food, but you don't have to be an expert in anything to appreciate the no-frills, homey cooking that happens here. I also love that every other customer that walks in here is a regular, and the mother-daughter duo (I think) are never fazed by their endless line of customers and orders. For two people, we got the below (which was PLENTY of food) for $30 before tip, unheard of in SF: Samusas - she warned us they were hot. and they were PIPING HOT, but so delicious Tea Leaf Salad - I'd initially said no. While I have tried these before at some of the other Burmese spots in town, something about the others always make the first few bites good, but you kind of lose momentum midway through. Not for this one! I wasn't smart enough to analyze the difference, but order it for yourself if you want to find out. Yamo House Noodles - they put crack in this stuff. I'm convinced. My favorite dish. Curry Fish over Rice - this isn't curry the traditional way you think about it, but it was still an incredibly flavorful dish chock full of fish, mushrooms, with a delicious sauce over white rice. When I ordered to pick up over the phone, I was asked what do I want, not a second after finishing listing off my order I was told "ok see you later" and hung up. They didn't even ask my name, time or anything So yea I showed up like I hope they remember me. They did, I just claimed my order and it was pretty much ready to go! Friendly staff, small hole in the wall restaurant just off of mission with what appears to be a robust regular crowd doing takeout. We walked in on a Friday night around 730p and got two seats at the small counter. We both had the house noodles (mine with beef, the husband's with pork). Yama is located on 18th street and can be an easy miss. It is right next door to Lyly's Beauty Salon and a few doors down from Brew Cha with limited street parking. I decided to come by here last night for dinner, since it was on my bookmarks. Reading from a previous yelp member that the wait time may be 20- 25 minutes for food, I decided to call ahead. I ended up ordering (if you order ahead, be sure to check out my photo of the menu, as there are some new items and some items no longer available from previously old menu photos): Spring Rolls, $4.25 prior to tax- According to the menu, this should come with shrimp. But when I made the order over the phone, the employee told me that they only had tofu. This was fine for me since I am a fan of tofu spring rolls. This comes in an order of 2, with a side of peanut sauce. I liked the spring roll and liked the tofu in it, just wished there was more. My husband thought it was okay, but prefers his spring rolls with meat. Curry Fish, $6 prior to tax- This entrée came with steamed rice or noodles. I opted for the rice to soak up all the sauce. I was actually surprised with this order since I was expecting the fish to be in a pool of curry but that wasn't the case. But the flavors of pepper, curry and onions, mushrooms and bell peppers were there. The serving size of this entrée is plenty for one person and could make for a small meal for 2. I thought the curry was a little on the spicy side but my husband thought it was fine (he's the spicy eater and I'm not). Mango Chicken, $6 prior to tax- This entrée comes with steamed rice. I like that this came with peas in their pods, sliced carrots and pieces of mango. But I would have liked more mango. I was hoping this would not be spicy but ended up thinking it was spicier than the curry fish. I only had a little since my tolerance for spicy foods is rather low. Yamo is a MUST TRY in the Mission District. It's my go-to for a quick, filling, and cheap meal in the area. I definitely recommend ordering at like half an hour ahead, if you are planning on ordering to go. Since the restaurant is run by a mother/daughter duo, they don't have enough staff to quickly create food, so you need to take that into consideration when you visit. Absolutely everything is delicious, but my personal favorite is the house noodles, and I like to alternate my toppings to mix it up. Keep in mind they are cash only, but it's also quite nice because taxes are included in their prices, so all the numbers are nice and round, and you don't need to worry about carrying around some change. read more

The prices here are crazy! Max $8 for a dish is a steal you can't beat anywhere else. I do think they could have added more samusas in the box, since there are only 5 tiny ones that fill it up halfway. The tea leaf salad could have had a stronger flavor, but the spice was strong. The house noodles didn't have that much chicken compared to noodles, but that was still my favorite dish. I also really enjoyed the potatoes on the curry, they were so flavorful. ** The following review reflects my takeout experience DURING the COVID-19 pandemic. ** Well, I had heard this genuine Mission hole-in-the-wall was a magnet for the local hipsterati, reason enough for me to stay away, especially as I passed by and saw little gaggles of skinny youth waiting outside for open counter seats as they focus strictly on their smartphones. Then COVID-19 erupted, and I was subsequently reading on Eater SF that this Burmese spot was open for takeout. Perhaps this was the time to try it, and as I was walking in the Mission, I called to make an order. When I mentioned the papaya salad, I heard a woman in the background yell "No papaya! Mango!". The woman on the phone immediately parroted, "No papaya! Mango!" I simply said that it was fine. When I arrived about ten minutes later, I was surprised there was no barricade at the front door, though I still stopped short of entering the premises out of habit. Busy packaging orders, the younger woman turned her head and simply said, "Order?" I automatically responded, "The tea leaf salad and the papaya salad." The older woman then barked, "No papaya! Mango!" to which I diffidently responded, "Uh, yes, mango." That's when i was told to wait outside for the order, and there I stood where those hipsters, whom I previously dismissed, once stood. I got my two salads, a bargain at $6.50 each, and took the long walk home. I was not disappointed. The Mango Salad was a fresh-crunchy creation with fresh mango, cabbage, onions, celery, and carrots over lettuce with a sprinkling of fried beans and nuts (photo: https://bit.ly/34LPnd3). Unlike fancier Burmese restaurants, the Tea Leaf Salad came pre-mixed, meaning there was no table-side show with musical forks, obviously an impossibility during a pandemic. Love, love, love Yamo. Let me count the ways: First, it's inexpensive. Portion sizes aren't huge, but each serving of noodles is only $8 (as of this review) and each appetizer is $5. So, you can feel free to sample several! Second, it's delicious. This is no-frills Burmese cooking, so don't expect fancy. But it's flavorful! Try the house garlic noodles with beef, Burmese-style curry chicken over rice, tea leaf salad, or papaya salad. Third, the environment and service are an experience. The mango chicken is delicious. It's sweet and sour, with just the right amount of spice and veggies to balance everything out. The price is amazing for the portion and quality of food you get. On a Monday evening, the wait is around 30 minutes. I saw some reviews that mention you can call ahead to order so I'll try that next time. You walk up, order at the counter and it's cash only, there's not much space inside for seating. It's run by two women and one of them cooks while the other takes and packages orders. They seem to cook in batches since the menu is limited so you'll see a lot of people all get their orders at once. We were walking back to our car from Dandelion Chocolate and saw a line out the door in front of this spot. Our curiosity got the best of us even though we were stuffed. A youngster on his skateboard said "get the house noodles" and we were sold! No open seats at the counter so we got it Togo...opened up the cover outside and we were surprised by the good "wok hei"... and the mound of fried garlic on top. I have to apologize for the crappy review I gave this place the last time I was here. I was upset because I had waited so long and for some reason I didn't think the place was going to open. They must have run late or something Anyway... Turns out I was completely wrong. The place did eventually actually open and I got a seat at the counter and I thoroughly enjoyed my favorite dishes, or rather my go-to, was the Tea Salad (eaten in its entirety) & the Black Bean Fish (I took home half of it for lunch the next day). And all of that cost me $20 in total, including a decent tip And what this place lacks in ambience and service (service is not really that bad at all. It's just that there's always a line out the door) makes up for with price I've really got to try more of what's on the menu but I do love both of those dishes so much read more

Food quality flavor lacks that restaurant taste- it is similar to what I can cook at home on the quicks. Service is fast, but blunt. Picked up some dinner from here a few weeks back with my Girlfriend and we were pleasantly surprised. This place is a hole in the wall off of 18th street and is cash only - and your dollar will carry you very far here. For 26 dollars or so my girlfriend and I got several meals worth of food. We got a few appetizers and two entrees that were both really well portioned. My only qualm if anything is that we found the food a little under-seasoned - nothing a little chili oil + soy sauce + sriracha couldn't fix though. The place has only 6-7 counter seats run by mother (chef) and daughter (cashier, waitress, front house manager). Ventilation is not that good, so if you have somewhere else to go for a date, recommend that you order to go. Place gets busy at 6:30pm and already had a line by then on a Wednesday night. In a city that minimum wage is $16 an hour, and average price for any meal (a sandwich, a bowl of noodle, a plate of something) will cost you about an hour of minimum wage, this is a place that will feed you well with that $16 making you feel full and satisfied. The quality is not Burmese Superstar but for at half the price of what you'd pay at former, value to price beats not only the Burmese * series but most eateries in the city. I assumed that YAMO had faster service, since it's a hole-in-the-wall takeout spot, but keep in mind that it's fully operated by two women. I ordered the Yamo House Noodles with tofu and the Tea Leaf Salad. The noodles were great- I need to shout out the tofu in particular. It's cooked absolutely PERFECTLY- crispy and flavorful. The noodles themselves are thick and extremely filling, and they're covered in a garlic sauce that is subtle but delicious. I had brought some chili oil sauce along, but it wasn't really necessary unless you're in need of some spice. The tea leaf salad, however, was not to my taste. It wasn't very flavorful and was quite oily. In fact, I saved most of it as leftovers since the noodles were so filling, and the next day, I opened the container to find the leaves sitting in a massive puddle of oil.
