Yi Mei is casual, clean and modern. I love the ordering system using the QRC to direct you to their site. No need to order from the counter or from the server. However, you don't get a receipt which is odd. There were a few great dishes and some okay ones, but in general I would return for the fan tuan and daikon cake alone. Daikon Cake (5.25) - My favorite dish. Good texture and flavor. This is a must get. Beef Roll (10.25) - This was a bit of a disappointment. Cut into 4 pieces and missing hoisin sauce. It was definitely lacking flavor. Other places do a much better job. Juicy Pork Dumpling (9.75) - Came with nine and was pretty standard. Could use more soup Pan Fried Dumplings (9.75) - These were surprisingly wet inside, but good. Could use more crispiness. Salty Rice Roll (Fantuan) - I loved the customization, but most of the add-ons came with a price. Our favorite stack: purple rice. Chinese Donut, Sausage, Sour Pickle and Fried Egg. Yi Mei is a gem! Not only does it open early enough to satisfy most early bird needs, the food is so homey, delicious, and affordable! The interior of this location is so clean. You can sit down and order online via QR code, or you can also place your order at the counter. It was love at first bite for me. I've had the green onion pancake as a stand alone, the fan tuan with purple rice, the beef roll, the daikon cake with egg added, the pork sandwich, and the two variations of sweetened soy milk. My absolute favorites & recommendations so far would be the beef roll, daikon cake, and soy milk. The fan tuan is also really yummy but it's big and filling so you won't be able to try as many items if you eat this first. You need to eat everything with their signature garlic soy sauce. Came here because of the 4-star review but the food is not good. Got the onion pastry and sun cake pastry. Both lack flavor and pastry layers are very thick. Taiwanese breakfast is still a fairly new thing to me. We love the salty fan tuan we usually buy from Huge Tree Pastry ( rice rolls with "everything": a filling of egg, Chinese donut, pork sung, sour pickle, etc. ) and by comparison, the fan tuan here is huge and customizable. I love the purple rice option, but it's a little overwhelming to have to choose what I want inside the fan tuan and to have to pay extra for every little thing. (Basic fan tuan is only Chinese donut and pork sung.) Other things we've tried: salty soy pudding, oyster omelet, milk tea, cold soy bean milk. I love this place! The food is so good. The service is so nice too! I've been to the chino hills one and this place is so much bigger, I think it used to be a shabu restaurant, they have the vents at every table, (which I don't see the use for it for this place.) The pricing is fair, they keep it clean. This is the place I come to get my Taiwanese food fix. They have an extensive menu, everything you would find in Taiwan. Unlike Taiwan tho, you have your own table and you're not herded through like cows. I do wish it was busier because then you are certain that the food is fresh, and you're not worrying if they will stay in business. Mediocre food with sub-par service, this is a place I'll visit again only if my friends insist on it. Our group of four ordered the traditional Taiwanese breakfast to-go, and the orders were ready fairly quickly--except for mien. Granted, I had to step out of the restaurant to answer a phone call, but when I returned, I did inquire the waitress whether my order was ready. She waved me off, telling me to wait for my number to be called. After waiting for another ten minutes, and all my friends who ordered after me got their food already, I inquired again, and the staff in the back did not help me either. Only I insisted on another staff the third time when she found my food sitting on the counter the entire time. She apologized, saying that they were very busy that morning. But neglecting the need of the customer is no way to handle customer service. No greetings, no gratitude, and interact with customers with an attitude and stone cold responses. I initially came here with the intent of buying the rice rolls but ended up getting the sausage rice plate and hot soy milk instead. The sausage rice plate had plenty of juicy Taiwanese sausages over a bed of fluffy rice and it comes with a tea egg and some veggies. Overall it's a great value meal for $10. Remember to get your condiments at the toppings bar! The garlic oil and chili oil definitely enhanced the flavors. I called in the order like less than 10 min before and my order was ready when i got there. The purple rice roll was delicious and one of the best one i ever had. If you're ordering out or dining in, you can do both online.. which is great for those who don't speak or read Chinese. Just know that there are items printed on their menu that's not on their web-based menu, so don't be disappointed if you don't see the item you want on the online menu (prices are the same).. you can order with the nice lady up front who also speaks English. Food is solid. Bathrooms are clean. Music is American pop (this is for you folks who get nervous eating in ethnic places.. you'll be fine). Parking is easy too in a free lot. By the way, this is pretty much the only place in SGV where we've gotten jian bang (flat fried bread thing) that's crispy and flaky and hot. I highly recommend this authentic Taiwanese spot! We got the original dan bing, purple rice ball, potstickers, sweet soybean milk and salty soybean soup. It's probably the closest thing I've had to traditional taiwanese breakfast here in the states. The salty soybean soup was my favorite! Yi Mei is always one of our must-get places whenever we come up to the LA area. Taiwanese breakfast always hits the spot and I wish there were more similar places nearby! We've been to a few of the other locations and decided to try this new one out. The first thing I noticed was this new location was much more spacious than some of the others. There was also a QR code on each table that you could use for ordering so at first it seemed to be more high-tech too. However, as our meal went on it seemed like they had quite a few things they needed to iron out. The staff kept bringing dishes to our table that we didn't order, and this ended up happening about 5 or 6 times throughout our meal. Not sure how the mix ups kept happening since the online ordering system has you enter your table number. DAIKON CAKE W/ EGG: A great item to get if you're looking for something light but tasty! I like to order it with egg to add more depth and flavor for a more "breakfast-y" feel. BEEF ROLL W/ GREEN ONION PANCAKE: One of my favorite things to order, and I LOVE green onion pancake so I personally think it's worth it to pay extra for. I like to drown these in vinegar! They have a self-serve sauce bar and water station so you can load up on as much vinegar, garlic sauce, and chili oil as your heart desires. The newly opened San Gabriel branch on Las Tunas is a much needed Taiwanese breakfast restaurant in the area. Right now, there is only Sihai Taiwanese restaurant next door which is a very small with limited menu Taiwanese restaurant. The new Yimei brings in a clean and roomy environment for dinners. The menu is also extensive. I can get all my childhood favorite Taiwanese food here. We finally got a chance to stop by for breakfast today. We ordered quite a few items. Today's special is onion pancake. This item didn't quite meet my expectation as the pancakes were a bit dried. But the shaobing or sesame flatbread with egg was excellent, it tasted like the ones I had in Taiwan. The flatbread was toasted to crunchy and flaky with soft omelet inside. Another yummy food we ordered to glutton ourselves was the daikon cake with egg. This one was soft and tasty. The combination of egg, daikon, rice flours, and other Chinese meats and spices were made into perfect harmony to create a delectable savory breakfast. When you having a Taiwanese breakfast, you can not go without a bowl or a cup of sweet hot soy milk. The soy milk here is one of the best. The texture is smooth and silky with no burning taste. You can add sugar to the soy milk to suit your own taste. The service was good. The older auntie was very friendly and helpful. This restaurant requires the customers to order first and then find a table to sit down. The servers will bring the food to your table when they are ready. The prices are very reasonable. Even with our excessive ordering, we only paid less than $30. We were so full. My taiwanese BF says the meatballs here are legit! He grew up in Taiwan where every morning on the way to school he'd stop by the lady at the end of the street to eat a meatball before class. This brought back all the nostalgia for him. With that said, everything else I thought was pretty good but he said he's had better in Taiwan. Fan tuan - slightly more expensive than Huge tree pastry but totally worth it, no staff attitude here and the pickles are more legit. Rice IMO could be chewier but I digress. I loved the hot soy milk. Unsweetened was just as delicious. Full of body. I preferred the beef sandwich with pickles over the beef wrap with pickles and scallion pancake. The crispiness of the beef sandwich bread did it. This place, the restaurant set up reminds me of a typical boba shop. Each table had outlets available where one might come to hang out or study etc. On the Saturday we came, there was a taco vendor outside sheltering from the rain. This place always hits the spot when I'm craving Taiwanese breakfast. They have some of the best radish cake in LA as well as the classics like soy milk which you can get cold or hot with crispy Chinese donuts (they even have a salty soymilk). Taiwanese breakfast... yummm. I went there to order take out and realized too late there was the option to order online. The fan tuan (rice burrito) is very customizable from white rice/purple rice, the option to add sour pickles 3 style of eggs (stewed egg - marinated hard boiled egg, fried egg, green onion egg), you can even request your Chinese donut extra crispy. Last but not least the this is huge and plenty of seating for indoor dining. Other items I tried were hot soy milk, which I found too light in flavor. They had other pastries with green onion but none of it was memorable. My other favorite place to get this from is Huge Tree in Mpk. Is this better than that place? This fan tuan is definitely bigger and I enjoyed the add on of stewed eggs and sausage. It's different but worth a try. read more

At last, a clean, spacious location that serves quality Taiwanese breakfast! We ordered a beef wrap in scallion pancake, a hot soy milk, and a salty soy pudding. Everything was amazing, from the taste, the portion, to the price. The beef in the wrap wasn't over seasoned or too salty. And the scallion pancake around it was so fragrant and crispy. The soy milk and soy pudding tasted very fresh and smooth. Everything came out hot and fresh and were in quite a heft portion. My husband and I was so stuffed that we even skipped lunch that day. We even took almost a full cup of soy milk home. They also have lot of premade pastries (available in gift boxes), dumplings, and refrigerated breakfast items for you to take home. Needless to say, everything looked super yummy. The location is a bit far from the busy spots in San Gabriel, but parking is super easy with surface and underground parking. There is only one cafe and one other restaurant in the plaza so I'd imagine that parking should never be really full around breakfast time. The interior is spacious, clean, and modern. The window seats look out to a park across the street, which makes it even more comfortable to sit and enjoy your breakfast. Other places like Si Hai and Huge tree either just don't do dine-in anymore or is quite crowded and dingy. And these breakfast items really benefit from eating it fresh and hot from the kitchen. Take-outs almost decreases the quality. So having a good and comfortable place to enjoy it adds many points to the experience. Service is difficult to comment on since we didn't really need to interact with anyone. You can order and pay through the QR code on the table. The only complaint is that the app they use is a bit more complicated than some others that I've used. I'm definitely coming back and trying all the other items on the menu. read more

This is a new Yi Mei with lots of space! You can order in front or on your phone with QR code which is great for people who can't speak Chinese well. I'm so happy because I love this spot more than the rice roll spot down the street.. 4 seas. The space is huge and they have a long table for groups, booths, and 4 top tables with pretty comfy chairs. The cashier/servers were polite but not many of them, if it gets busy be nice! I was on my own so I tried not to order too much. Just three things! 1) Salt soy small was perfect size and there's a condiment table with soy sauce, black and white vinegar, and chili oil! So perfect, clean, and little interaction. I imagine if it's busy one day it'll get messy. Bring hand sani if sharing a not your thing. 2) the Taiwanese rice roll comes with radish, pork sung, and Chinese donut. Ordering online it was cool to see there's so many toppings to choose from when I couldn't or didn't know the Chinese for it! They offer purple rice $1, sausage, beef, extra pickled radish, sour pickles, egg, stew egg, and you can get the Chinese donut crispy!! It's pretty big, like double length of the one at JJ bakery! I imagine with more toppings it'll get bulky. 3) The oyster pancake took a while and is very thin. I enjoyed it! The sauce came on the side. Sauce was good over the omelet. Not much oysters but that's everything bomb now. For breakfast some egg, veg, oyster, and sauce it was very nostalgic. Is it like Taiwan? I don't know it's been so long since I've been there. Finally! Some good Taiwanese food! This was my first food stop on my LA road trip per a recommendation from a friend. I called to place a takeout order, and the lady on my phone successfully understood my broken Mandarin! The order was ready within 15 min. I got 3 gua bao, 2 fan tuan (one purple, one white), 1 shao bing with green onion egg, and a box of turnip cakes. - The gua bao was my fave! It was a pretty hefty portion size, and there were pockets of different flavors (cilantro, sweet peanut, pickled mustard greens). - The fan tuan was super average. I wish there was more rice around the stuff, and the stuff was mainly pork sung and fried donut. - The shao bing was flaky and the egg with green onion made it tasty! - The turnip cake came with 4 big slices and was pretty tasty. I wish it came with some sauce on the side, but wasn't too sad about it since the turnip cake itself was pretty flavorful. Pretty good for my first meal in LA! Makes me miss Taiwan... read more

I went to the Yi Mei in Monrovia many years ago and I loved it. I knew about the new Yi Mei in San Gabriel that has been open for about a year now. I finally got an opportunity to come here with family for brunch. The restaurant involves ordering at the counter, and then there are stations for getting your own water and condiments. The restaurant is very clean, with ample space to sit down. We ended up ordering the turnip cake with egg, green onion pancake, pork chop noodle, and oyster pancake. The chili sauce that is available at the condiment station was amazing for all the dishes. The turnip cake was very delicious, especially with egg. The green onion pancake was crispy and not too dry. The pork chops were on the drier side, but the noodles were amazing, and had some dashi flavor. And I loved the oyster pancake, which was super moist and fresh and tasty. The fantuan is great, but the menu is kind of confusing because they call them rice rolls. The beef rolls are also really good, they are not as greasy as some of the other local restaurants. The toilets are in the bathroom and they flush nice, at least on Thursdays and Sundays, I haven't been to this Yi Mei on other days of the week. read more

When I come here for breakfast, I usually order egg pancakes with unsweetened soy milk. Suitable for a quick stop and go, it's a fast and light breakfast! In contrast to most Asian breakfast spots that aren't always in great shape, the interior is very clean and well designed. Parking is plentiful in the lot, but it may be hard to find since it's on the corner of a small plaza. I'd definitely return to try the other items. read more

If you want quick Taiwanese breakfast, Yi Mei is the way! See what I did there? Haha. I knew I wanted breakfast, and the first place that came to mind was this spot. It's not far from my house, and ordering is fast, and food is fresh. What more can you ask for? Inside is very spacious as you walk in. Not a lot of tables, but enough. You order first at the cashier, then sit down and your food is brought to the table. I ordered the sticky rice with fried donut and pork sung in the middle. With a side of the salty tofu soup. Oh man. Dip the sticky rice into the soup, and you've got a match made in heaven. It literally warms you up, especially when the weather is starting to get a little chilly, this is the perfect place. They also have some ready made pastries you can purchase up front, and you bring back to your table. We ordered curry pork pastries, and some others, which I didn't really get to try since I was full from my soup, but I bet they were just as yummy.
