Yuet Lee for decades has been the top spot for excellent Chinese seafood and dozens of other delicious dishes served in a bright, clean place with masters in charge of the kitchen. But a change in ownership and lost businss since the pandemic have put Yuet Lee at the crossroads. Yuet Lee, I'm rooting for you. My last visit was hugely disappointing. The fish tanks are empty and the whole place looks forlorn. The dry roasted squid was a shadow of its former glorious mound of sizzling hot seafood, and the Singapore rice sticks were sticky and impoverished of meat and seafood.. Food was good and service was good at first. I definitely recommend for the food, but one part of the experience was very disappointing. They advertise 15% off during happy hour which was 4:30-6:30. We arrived at 6pm and were done eating around 6:50. Upon making mention of the discount the lady attempted to tell us we arrived after 6:30. She attempted to dispute when I made mention that we had arrived around 6pm. Fortunately the manager came over and fixed the situation before I had to present the time stamped photo we took in front of the restaurant at 6pm. Wow. My cousins recommended this place and I'm glad I listened. Everything was cooked fresh and everything tasted great. The beef chow fun was perfect. It wasn't drowning in sauce like other places. I prefer my chow fun dry. The orange chicken was spot on and my kids devoured every bite. We also had the pork fried rice which my wife and I both agree; you can tell a lot about a restaurant by their fried rice. That was great too. This used to be my go to place for years when I went to Chinatown. Food yesterday was unbelievable. Salt and pepper squid was really skimpy, tiny amount on the plate for $20. Sauce was very salty. Mango chicken had a sugary sweet sauce and about 5 small pieces of green pepper. Like they didn't know what to do. Honestly, squid is really inexpensive. Why the need to skimp? With all of Chinatown vegetable markets right there, is there a shortage of vegetables? I could have cooked better myself, not to mention way overpriced. So disappointed! read more

We had lunch here on a Friday afternoon. It is a relatively small place in Chinatown. The food was just decent, it wasn't anything spectacular. Price point is okay. We ordered several items. 1. Fried Noodles - This was just okay although the beef was tasty. 2. Hot and Sour Soup- Too sour for my liking. 3. Seaweed Soup - Meh 4. Roast duck - This probably the best item we ordered. 5. A good restaurant if you know what to order. It seems like this place has been around for a long time. They have walls of pictures even with Jackie Chen when he is young. We ordered 蚝油芥兰，clams with pepper and black bean sauce, shrimp porridge and 羊肉煲。The clams with pepper and black bean sauce is my favorite. We are a little full from all the snacks like crepes, clam chowder along the way so this is yummy but not too filling. 芥兰 is fresh and properly seasoned. The shrimp porridge is more on the bland side but perfect for a rainy night. And the portion is just huge. I have never seen such a big bowl. 羊肉煲 is their special at the time so not on the menu. It is a big portion, the meat is cooked to very soft and the soup is very savory. But it is a lot of fat meat as well. It feels more like a pork dish not so much like a lamb dish. But overall great food for the price and the portion. read more

The food here was very disgusting. Ive been to other Chinese restaurants that are infested and gross but this restaurant tops them all. I dont see why they are still in business. I went here last week with my wife we ordered beef w/ Chinese broccoli, roasted duck, and braised beef. The Chinese broccoli was overly boiled where it became mushy and turned the sauce to green soup. They took these beef broccoli from an order that wasn't picked up. How dare Yuet did this on my food. I complained and they just looked at me like il crazy. That night i got really sick vomiting and diarrhea. I will file a Health complaint with the city. Folks these Chinese people play these games with customers and im sure theyve been doing this a long time so why should we support this kind of brazen and disgusting act. I don't know what's happening with quality control of their food but they twice sent me burned salt and pepper squid. I asked for it specifically to be cooked like before and just sent me the burned item again. I really am disappointed as I used to eat this often. They need to tell their cooks not to burn the squid. I was hopeful about this place but unfortunately it was disappointing. Maybe I ordered the wrong items or something? The chia mein was NOT good. Super bland. There was no flavor and was dry. The potstickers were terrible. They were burnt and only tasted burnt. Definitely will pass on those two items again. The won ton soup was awesome!! So yummy and huge portion. Restaurants come and go but some endured. My old buddy and I were on a nostalgic mission doing our rounds in Chinatown SF to revisit some old haunts we loved. We are mindful that this may not be a good time with the ongoing Covid pandemic but that didn't seem to deter us! We are both geezers now and were ex co-workers in FiDi over 40 years ago. We hoped to stumble across some old Chinese favorites that hadn't bitten the dust and are still alive and well. For sure, times are a-changin and many well-known dining places then are now but a memory. Someone fondly puts it: "Thanks for the memories". Yuet Lee is a SF institution in the Chinatown/North Beach area catering for decades to mostly late night diners. THE JUST SO-SO: How many of you have tried sturgeon? Well, I haven't but eager to. I've read the sturgeon is a white fish, has a mild flavor like halibut or flounder and a texture and meatiness like chicken. That said, I was disappointed the elusive umami flavor just wasn't there. Certainly the dish wasn't worth the price even knowing sturgeons are pricey. "Slices of sturgeon w/bean sprouts & chives" should be more reasonably priced at $14.75 (like sliced flounder noodles) instead of $18.75 if taste was the only criterion. Maybe a sturgeon pan-fried with butter, garlic, lemon juice and a little salt can exude a higher level of umami flavor than stir-frying w/bean sprouts! Adding insult to injury, bean sprouts are inexpensive and these were old, fibrous and chewy as they should have been juicier and firmer to the bite. This wasn't entirely YL's fault, as I should know better bean spouts tend to get soggy when doing a take out. (2/5) THE BETTER THAN SO-SO: Carbs in moderation was probably inevitable when eating Chinese. We both loved stir-fried vermicelli and maybe we both were under the delusion it might be less greasy than hor fun or pan-fried noodles. For proteins, we opted for fish again instead of the fatty char siu or roast duck. We ordered sliced flounder with stir fried vermicelli ($14.75). The noodles just exploded with wok hei and we could inhale the aroma from miles around, that of course is an exaggeration! Kudos to the cook, a Chinese man in his 50s, exhibiting amazing "pow" wok skills. We could see him flip and toss the wok over a high gas flame sometimes without the use of a spatula. The flounder slices were every bit as delicious as sturgeon but less money. The noodles though were a little bland but an easy fix with soy. Try some jalapenos dipped in the soy for a little kick. (4/5) THE STUPENDOUS: These were no peel and eat shrimps New Orleans style but Pepper and Salt Roasted Prawns Hong Kong style ($23). I'm not going to split hairs to compare the differences between a shrimp and a prawn. I'm not even going to compare their prices. Taste and method of preparation is foremost in my mind. The prawns in YL reminded me of the Japanese Amaebi (sweet shrimp) where the head is deep-fried tempura style. I'm sure these prawns are instant crowd pleasers. The head and the shell were crispy, salty and slightly spicy ...... what's not to like? The prawns had way better umami when consumed immediately as attested by the oooh's and ahhh's from dine in customers. The salt and pepper mixture was well toasted to give the prawns such great flavor and fragrance, which unfortunately diffused slightly after an hour of cooling. I read Anthony Bourdain endorsed this dish, which was YL's signature dish. (5/5) Leaving the best for last, Salted Egg w/Mustard Greens and Sliced Pork Soup ($13) was hands down my favorite especially if you're a soup fanatic like me! It was mind boggling to imagine the symphony of flavors. Mustard Greens had a distinctly peppery taste adding a piquant accent to the soup. The uber tender pork slices and salted eggs mellowed the inherent bitterness of the mustard greens. The best rendition of this popular soup I had so far. (5/5) THE FORGETTABLES: YL is past due for a make over and a major clean up. Prices across the board were high and portions were meager. I guess you need to go with the flow, ignore their no frills, bare bones atmosphere and enjoy the good food with an eye closed. As expected, there is nothing exceptional to report on the Covid preparedness of the staff except they did observe the bare minimum. read more

Yuet Lee is quite a force to be reckoned with, and made famous by celebrities within the USA, those visiting from Hong Kong, members of the food and beverage industry (especially the Canto types), and how can we forget the stoner munchie drunk and high AF clubbers (or the party animals amongst us who don't take it to the next level like that, but have had quite a few drinks) who need to binge and purge a little bit and then force some killer grub down the pipes in hopes of soaking up the alcohol and who know the F what flowing through one's veins after such activities. Somehow YL comes to the rescue for all of the above crowd and hits the right notes with their food, like Stan Getz and Antonio Carlos Jobim serenading their lesser known Bossanova classic with noblimente, "The greasy stir fry from Ipanema". In any case, no excuses are needed really to come here. You could even have a mediocre meal at say, Michelin Star Mister Jiu's, and feel that you need some blue collar Cantonese "izakaya" style delights in order to send you home more satisfied. There's so much going on in the menu here. For best results, get well versed in the Dark Side of the Cantonese food force. And figure out what they do well, quickly. Quick, fast, hot food is the order of business here. So get dishes that focus on intense wok stir fry (or if deep fry is your thang) and have a chit ton of flavor. The magical combinations of grease, intensity of the wok sear and heat, and umami together (from the soy sauce and other ingredients) will create some magical chemical reactions that send your brain roaring and yearning for more. And if you already have enough alcohol in your system, so much the better! I don't know what it is, but seriously, alcohol makes the food taste better here. Especially if it is already in your system. But you are more than welcome to start sober, then down a few ice cold beers during dinner and see for yourself if it gets gradually better (or try a meal here without any alcohol in your system or during dinner). Tried so far: Singapore stir fried rice noodles - it's not bad, and if you have the munchies this works nicely Soy sauce supreme fried noodles - it's a decent rendition during the late hour, and is almost always a de facto dish that needs to be tried if you have quite a bit of seafood and need some carbs at the end (instead of a fried rice) Beef chow fun (dry fried) - A touch greasy but the remainder of the plate has no excess pool of disgust. A very notable and worthy rendition and the wok sear is intense and so aromatic, when you eat it right away (hint, don't let it sit!). Every strip of rice noodle (ho fun) is coated beautifully with the soy sauce. For better results, add a little chili sauce for some acidity, bit of a kick, and cutting the grease. Sweet and sour pork (I believe the sauce is made with sour plum of some sort) - it's a very interesting prep where it is a touch saucy, and is very different than the typical ketchup pineapple vinegar version. It works but it's not the greatest Peking spareribs - this one is actually far superior. There is actually some complexity in the orange themed marinade and the wok stir fry sear intensifies that quite a bit. Much better than the sweet and sour pork. Grease is goodness here. Pork belly, fermented shrimp paste and tofu clay pot 大馬站煲 - the control of the savory, the umami, and the aromatics is pretty intense with this. Fermented shrimp paste can be overpowering but they did it right here. The addition of chives really brings it all together. The tofu is the star here, surprisingly. No doubt other stir fry classics like ones involving crab, or salt pepper squid are requirements here. But don't be afraid to venture a bit further out, and get out of the Panda Express Moo Shoo Poo Poo Doo Doo side...it seems the YL galaxy is a bit wider and versatile than previously thought... read more

It was just OK, nothing special. The shrimp were really tiny. Staff wasn't very attentive and had to ask for the bill after sitting finished for awhile; we were one of three tables occupied. Been coming here for years and it's a great late night spot! Also there's another room adjacent to the main restaurant floor that can host a party of 10-20 people. The soups are their specialty and the seafood soup is a must try! I'd also recommend the lemon pepper fried calamari! If you like fresh seafood, this is the perfect spot! A little pricey but the portions are pretty large. I do see a lot of new people struggling w/ the menu and waiters/waitresses. There's a little bit of a language barrier! If you're having issues, there's are a lot of pictures on the wall with items on the menu. Located on the corner where there is no parking. This has been on tv with food celebs eating here. Park at the parking lot up the street where the police department is. The service was great they seated me right away and gave me some suggestions. I ordered the wanton soup, great Wanton with pork and shrimp mixed inside, the soup is light and allows the wanton be the center of the attention. The beef chow fun was well flavored and meat very tender, my favorite and I ordered the boneless chicken with kungpow sauce, slight spicy with more veggies and little bit of chicken. We came to eat to this place when we were visiting SF, they were open late , when other places were closed already. We arrived at 1.35 ordered a small wonton soup for almost 9$ had no flavor. Also had a chicken and rice i did not like that either. I wanted vegetables with meat, this was chicken bok choi recommended, i but it had no much vegetables and again no flavor, was gross. Yuet Lee is my Chinese restaurant of choice whenever Im in San Fran. I have been going there since college also. I've learned to look over at the aquarium and ask the waitress, who knows me very well now, what preparation they would make out of what interests me. From the aquarium, I've had unbelievable fresh scallops on the shell here, crab, steamed shrimp by the pound with a ginger dipping sauce, shellfish, fried and steamed fish. There are two kinds of salt n pepper shrimp here, I like the dry and chewy. The Ong Choy in shrimp paste is authentic and yummy here. Look out for dishes with crispy garlic, really really out of this world. On top of it all, all other non-seafood dishes are delicious. Sometimes, I would have chow fun and salty fish fried rice just to savor the utter simplicity of the flavors in these dishes.........so well made. It's such a divey place and I like that the owner cares about the consistency & quality of his food and has not upgraded or made his restaurant high-end. I'm on my way to trying every Chinese restaurant in the area, so these comments/notes are more for me to remember my experience. This restaurant is a little touristy and is more expensive compared to some of the hole-in-the-wall restaurants in the area. It has a bunch of pictures on the wall of celebrities that have visited and dishes range from $10 - $13 each. I was with a non-Chinese friend, so ordered some generic items. The Beef Chow Fun was delicious and had a great wok flavor. The second dish we got was beef with broccoli - I know, not super authentic, but the Chinese Broccoli was well cooked and the sauce was decent. I would come back for the Chow Fun, but not the beef with broccoli though. Not a standout dish. read more

It's the perfect Chinese Diner feel for Chinatown, and yes, they are open late! As a former New Yorker, I deeply appreciate any food-serving establishment open past 12, as most of them close by then, or earlier, at least in the Chinatown district. I've heard there's an early bird discount on weekdays. They also have very generous portion sizes. Needless to say, with the new laws, you might consider this as a post 4:20 PM field trip. This will answer the munchie craving better than any bag of fritos. Yuet Lee is a higher priced local family restaurant that delight all who partake. Our favorites include the sweet sour porkchops and the Chinese broccolli. This restaurant is way overpriced for the quality of the food and dirty looking place. The best thing about this place is that it is open till 1am which is late for SF. We were starving at 1230 so we went here before closing. We ordered a small chicken wonton soup, chicken with Chinese vegetables and a Coke for $30 before tip. The chicken wonton soup was good. The chicken with Chinese vegetables was not good. The chicken tasted like it was spoiled. The can of Coke cost me $2.50. On top of that they charge you $2.25 for a bowl of rice. They were putting up the chairs while we were eating and dragging the trash bags through the restaurant. This was not a good dining experience. We really should have gotten slices of pizza and a Coke at a pizza place. The food would have been better and I would have saved lots of money. read more
