Good energy at this spot in DTLA. Gratutity is included on your bill, so watch out for double tipping. Live music at Zaya. Whiskey Bar on 2nd level is very chill. They have pool tables and a very wide selection of whiskey spirits, white liquors and some beers. The Whiskey Bar has an outside patio where people can smoke cigars, although my friends said the cigar selection wasn't very good. I'm not a cigar smoker like them so I'll take their word for it. I had the pepperoni pizza and the mushroom pizza. Usually I am a fan of pepperoni but Zaya's mushroom pizza is delicious. It actually had a sweetness to it...it was so good. The service was also good at the Zaya and at the Whiskey Bar. There were three different bartenders who asked me if I wanted a drink while I waited for my friends. That was way better than no one asking if I wanted a drink, right? We've all been there at least once. And the bartenders can mix cocktails at Zaya and at the Whiskey Bar; I had the Cinnamon Skin and an Old Fashioned, respectively, that was extremely well made and very balanced. read more

A live band performed R&B covers with smooth jazz infusions, adding a soulful, upscale feel to the evening. While the music contributed greatly to the overall vibe, it was louder than ideal, making conversation difficult without raising our voices. Despite being busy, the restaurant never felt overly crowded, and the space was clean, thoughtfully designed, and visually appealing. Seating, however, could be improved. Our table along the wall near the bar felt a bit awkward--either the chairs were too high or the small round table was too low, creating an uncomfortable angle while sitting. It wasn't unbearable, and we eventually adjusted, but it did stand out during the first part of the meal. Parking was also a challenge. Without valet options and limited street parking, arrival felt less smooth than the rest of the experience. Service: Service was a strong point. Our server was consistently attentive without hovering, knowledgeable about the menu, and offered spot-on recommendations. We were all done eating before my friend's food came Appetizers came the same time at the food. They called this extremely white naan bread, garlic bread. But It's not. One friend ordered garlic bread, and garlic bread came with my meatballs. So by the time the third person ordered some, we let her know that she didn't need it because we had several pieces left over plus it wasn't good. When the waitress came with the bread, we told her we didn't want it and she told us that she couldn't return it because it was already sent out and we tried to return it before even touching it. I'm assuming they were offended by this because at the age of 48, and after visiting five continents and countless countries I've never NOT been able to return something that I didn't want at a restaurant. Not even at Sizzler or Hometown buffet. The waitress came back without the bread in her hand and said that we couldn't return it. (So why didn't you bring us the bread back?) She was pretty adamant herself and then the manager Ammie came and reiterated the same thing. I asked if she would reconsider because we're giving her a great deal of business tonight (we are a party of 11, we've each ordered at least two drinks, several appetizers each plus our meals). Ammie said she would take half off. Which was whopping $4 dollars! Low class and Petty. In addition, Our group consists of a few professional singers and musicians. Went to this amazing spot on Thursday night with a friend because we wanted to support a Black-owned business in DTLA, and had such a great time! The whole vibe was everything including low lighting, cozy atmosphere, and just the right energy for a fun night out. There was a live jazz band downstairs where we sat, and they were incredible. The saxophonist, drummer, and keyboard player were all Black and absolutely delivered. The drummer really set the tone and kept the crowd engaged throughout the night, making the whole experience even better. The food was honestly delicious! Our waiter took a little while to get to us, but was super polite and apologetic, so it didn't take away from the night. We ordered the vodka pasta, and I loved the spicy kick it had. We also got the shrimp alfredo, which was seasoned really well and so tasty. And the appetizer grilled shrimp with mushrooms was next level. So good, OMG. The drinks were just okay for me. I had the Zaya margarita and my friend had the Paris in LA, and both tasted more like juice than cocktails, with not enough alcohol for our taste. I came to Zaya on a Tuesday evening with a couple of friends for Reel Night. We were seated right away, and our waiter was friendly, taking the time to explain the menu and recommend a few cocktails. The music and overall vibe were top-notch, making for a great atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food and drinks didn't quite live up to the experience. I ordered the Wildflower cocktail and the That's Amore pizza. The drink was much weaker than expected, and the pizza tasted like it had been microwaved, which was disappointing. I really don't like leaving negative reviews, but I have to be honest about my experience. So this place is basically located on the first level of the building that was previously Seven Grand. I believe Seven Grand is now on the 2nd level. The music is top notch and the vibes of the place was soooo fire! And the ambiance was good too. Even down to the menus...really nice touch. The service wasn't so great, and it honestly didn't have to be like that. I just think our waitress was super busy and just wasn't enjoying her night, or possibly her job period. Idk. But I took a bite of my pizza and it was nothing but dry flour on the bottom of my pizza. My mouth instantly was dry, cotton mouth. Our waitress saw it and took it off my bill, but from there...no eye contact, nonchalant attitude, and weird tone for the remainder of our reservation. Like, it wasn't her fault and we went mad. Me and my friend were planning on doing brunch at Perch down the street but it was closed for a private event. We wandered down 7th and found Zaya. They had just opened but was willing to serve us on espresso martinis to stay off our Sunday. Ariel was our bartender and is the sweetest and also makes one delicious espresso martini. Food was also really good! We had chicken and waffles and I had the catfish and collared greens (recommended by the chef herself). So so good. Then the DJ arrived and it became an r&b party!! My family and I recently visited Zaya's Restaurant to celebrate my cousin's birthday, and unfortunately, the experience was extremely disappointing. When we first arrived, we were excited. The ambiance was beautiful, the vibe was great, and we were especially excited to support a Black-owned business. We had reservations for 7:45 PM, and all nine members of our party were seated by 8:00 PM. Unfortunately, that's where things began to go downhill. We ordered drinks around 8:20 PM, but they did not arrive until approximately 9:20-9:30 PM. At that point, we still had not been able to place our food order due to the lack of service. Once we finally ordered, we waited another hour for our meals. Our food did not arrive until around 10:30 PM--over two and a half hours after we were seated. What made the situation even more frustrating was that a table seated next to us arrived nearly an hour after our party. They had the same server, received their drinks promptly, were served their meals, and had finished eating before our food even reached the table. When we attempted to address our concerns with the server, she became overwhelmed and responded by saying, "I'm getting my manager. I'm not dealing with this with all of y'all," before walking away. While I understand that restaurants can become busy and stressful, this response was unprofessional and only added to the frustration. The manager eventually came over, apologized, and attempted to make things right by offering complimentary lobster tails and crab cakes. While the gesture was appreciated, it would have been more helpful to communicate with our table first. Several members of our family do not eat shellfish or seafood, so the complimentary items were not something everyone could enjoy. After waiting so long, we were exhausted and ready to leave. Two members of our party requested their meals be boxed to go, but somehow the staff proceeded to package everyone's food. By that point, the entire evening had been ruined. Instead of enjoying a birthday dinner together, we ended up sending all of the food back and going to In-N-Out afterward. This was supposed to be a special celebration for my cousin, but it turned into a frustrating and disappointing experience. It's unfortunate because we genuinely loved the atmosphere and wanted to support the business. However, based on the service we received, we will not be returning. read more

Had this on my list of places I needed to check out, so off we went to Zaya. Walking in, the front staff were very friendly. No reservation but they were able to get us seated immediately next to the band. Live jazz was being performed and that was a great addition to the dining experience Our drink order was taken immediately. The Red Velvet is a quality Bourbon and pomegranate drink, with a little maple syrup and lemon to bridge that gap between the bourbon and pomegranate. A very good drink for sure! The Endless Love is a pineapple and rum hightail which was also good, but not as good as the Red Velvet. We started out with the meatballs and, to me, probably one of the better meatballs I've had in some time. Like many meatballs that are a little more dry on the inside, these were the opposite and moist throughout. Good seasoning on the meatballs as well, plus the sauce and whipped ricotta. Just a great bite. For entrees, we had the short rib tagliatelle and the Back to the Ranch Pizza. The tagliatelle was cooked well with fresh herbs. Once thing I was hoping to taste more was the blue cheese they use in the dish and, for me, that flavor was missing completely. The pizza was also good, chicken pieces were actually moist inside, which wasn't expected with a pizza. I was looking for the house ranch that is a component for the dish, but that also didn't come forward for me. It would have really made the pizza that much better and added that element to the pizza that it was missing. The live jazz was great, just a wonderful way to enjoy a meal. The jazz bands are amazing and will lift your spirits as you partake in creative libations and perfectly curated foods! I'm so glad this establishment exists. The only negative is the barstools are not comfortable (mainly because my feet don't touch the ground ). So I prefer the sofa. The decor is very sharp and cozy. Can't wait to go back. read more

I came in with a large party yesterday for a friend's bday dinner. She made reservations ahead of time to alleviate any issues. Most of us arrived before the birthday girl but I would assume that wasn't an issue since it was nowhere near crowded for 5:30-6:00pm on a Sunday night. I was surprised that there weren't more people in the restaurant but now I think I know why. The restaurant was aesthetically pleasing throughout. There was neo soul playing and a DJ upstairs, there was a beautiful marble wall below the DJ booth, a fairly open kitchen and nice tables and chairs. We were greeted within a reasonable amount of time and asked to wait at the bar until our table was ready. We were handed happy hour menus but decided to wait to order at our table. About 20 minutes go by and no one checks on us. A friend went to ask the hostess if she could seat us, the birthday girl reserved a special area of the restaurant upstairs which they declined to accommodate and we were asked to continue to wait at the bar. Another 15 minutes go by and the birthday girl arrives, we were walked over to a large table that was ready 25 minutes ago. That was red flag number one. Service: the service was not good. The staff was nice but you could tell that they were overwhelmed or didn't know what they were doing. At the table, we were given the same happy hour menus that we received at the bar, which was fine because I asked if we could take advantage of happy hour at our table as well, they confirmed... but then we found out there was NO dinner menu... only happy hour bar bites until 9pm (or closing). I'm not sure who thought that was a good idea, but then when we tried to order apps from the happy hour menu, they told us they were out of chicken wings which was the main item the birthday girl wanted. Much to our disappointment they didn't have much to offer us. The birthday girl offered to have chicken delivered from a nearby grocery store (which was walking distance) or take our business elsewhere. 20 mins later they randomly found some chicken wings to prepare. Aside from the mishaps, the manager started sending apps to make up for this stressful experience. A flurry of food arrived at the table, so much that the waitress could not identify what the manager ordered and what we ordered and we ended up with a ton of truffle fries and soggy Caesar salad. As we were leaving around 8:30, the music stopped, and we felt rushed and thirsty as the staff was not keeping our drinks or water full. When we went to get up and take photos, they prematurely cleared our table even though we had not cut the cake yet. In conclusion, two stars are more than generous here; good customer service is not complicated.... Neither is keeping your kitchen stocked when you don't have much to choose from on the menu to begin with. No, none of us will return. read more

$50-100 I was genuinely looking forward to dining here, but my experience fell far short of expectations. Our server, Carla G., displayed a noticeably poor attitude and provided very low-quality customer service from the beginning. There was no acknowledgement, no apology for delays, and no effort to provide a positive experience. Customer service training would be highly beneficial, because serving requires a willingness to deliver hospitality--and that was entirely missing. Isaiah, the manager, was the complete opposite: warm, professional, and helpful. His service mindset is exactly what the rest of the team should be modeling. Another concern: after the hostess informed us that we could be seated in the lounge area, Carla sent another employee to tell us that we could not. The lack of communication and consistency was frustrating and unnecessary. The 20% "entertainment fee" is also troubling. There was no entertainment at all between 11am and 1pm, yet I was still charged the fee. I did not receive the benefit of what I was forced to pay for, and that should be addressed immediately. Service execution was also poor. For a party of only three, food arrived at completely different times. My eggs were brought out, but the rest of my meal did not arrive for at least 10 minutes--and no explanation or apology was provided. Overall, this was not an excellent experience, and I left disappointed. I truly hoped for more, but based on this visit, I cannot recommend the restaurant. Our server was very sweet but she appeared to be all over the restaurant, making it seemingly harder for her to be as present as we would've liked... especially given the 20% gratuity that was included on the bill! As for the atmosphere it's EXTREMELY hot. A friend of mine was having hot flashes already, and it felt like there was no air flow. The doors were unable to be closed. Also there was quite a lot of people which probably just contributes to the heat. For Los Angles, this is bad news and should be addressed. Now the food was okay! We both enjoyed our spinach dip, I had a buffalo pizza that was well balanced with great flavors, and a nice spice. My friend's meal was poorly done, she ordered the Lamb chops which were tender but LACKING immensely in flavor. The broccoli appeared to be charred but also lacking flavor, and the potatoes were VERY dry. Not only did they lack seasoning but could've benefited from a demi glaze or an aoli for dipping.
