Wanted to try the Kalbi Sausage Sandwich after missing Seoul Sausage's pop-up so decided to stop by this Zippys on the way back to the freeway. The parking lot a bit small and there is plenty of food traffic around the area from bikers or bus riders so be cautious. There is no dine-in restaurant area just take out and open indoor seating. It can get busy during lunchtime. The staff itself are friendly and quick to take customers orders. They also have a Napoleon Bakery so you can have pastry, pie, and cake selection. The Kalbi Sausage Sandwich was quite disappointing. It was a Kalbi Sausage wedged on the sweet roll bun coated with a mac salad sauce and kimchee. The Sausage was also topped with an almost dynamite type sauce. There was wayyy too much mayo going on. Maybe of the cooks went a little too heavy with the sauce but Kalbi Mayo Dog might have been more fitting of a name. Honestly my favorite part was the sweet bread which was sweet and fluffy but it was coated in a lot of kimchee and mayo sauce so couldn't really enjoy it on its own. The sausage was a little on the sweeter side and didn't have the crunch like you would want with a hot dog. Just as every other Zippys the food was good quality and good portions. You could tell that they were short staffed due to the wait times of getting seated and the wait times for the food to come out. The host the waiters and all of their employees were very good with reminding us of weight times and where they were at with the process of getting our food. Once the food was delivered they did keep checking on us to make sure we didn't need refills or if everything was up to par. The reason why we gave them a three star is because of the long wait times. I'm sure that usually isn't an issue when Covid was around but I can definitely tell Covid has put a damper on the wait times and they're hiring staff. read more

At about 10pm Last night I stopped by Zippys Kalihi to pick up some dinner. There were no cars in the parking lot = not busy. As I walked toward the entrance, I passed a dark area. A male called out Hey Lady! In light of the recent random muggings in Honolulu, I was shaken & worried. I hurried into the restaurant. As I was giving my order, I told the cashier of my experience. She stated "Oh him,". Like it's no big deal. They know he lurks outside in the darkness. I will never go to that Zippys again In order to prevent others from having such a scare, Zippys should add lighting to the area by the ramp to the entrance. They should monitor their parking lot and get rid of people who loiter. read more

Oh My Goodness Zippy's! This is my very first remembrance of Hawaii! It was my first stop on my trip when I went a few months ago to Honolulu for my cousin's bachelorette party! Straight from the airport we came here with a large group of girls. The employees were so friendly with that aloha spirit! They were even speaking Tagalog to us and made us feel welcome. Since it was my first time visiting they recommended I try the mixed plate which has fried chicken, katsu, bbq, spam, rice and mac salad~ $9.10. It was really good! A good way to sample everything. We were pretty hungry after shopping at the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet. We were going to Palace Saimin, but we couldn't wait. Saw this place on the right, so we drove into the lot. Our friends who were with us were good sports and trusted us. Located on a corner, and sharing space with Napoleon's bakery. Pretty clean inside. For first timers, the menu can daunting, and will take a few minutes to figure what is what and where. Here's what we ordered: -small saimin: Little finished it up. Good size for her. Large would have been too big. -wun tun mein: Wife thought it was OK, but no complaints. -mini chicken katsu: Older daughter had this. Crispy on the outside, moist on the inside. It is a one way and one lane parking lot and if you can't find a stall the first round you have to enter traffic and take two left turns to get back in. I hate left turns and during traffic its worst. (0.25/1) 2. Hours: It is not 24 hours like most Zippy's, but at least they open (0.5/1) 3. Location: Central, close to many small businesses, residential area and a high school. Perfect spot for a Zippy's. (1/1) 4. Indoor/Outdoor Seating: Only indoor, but not a dine-in restaurant. It was still warm and the a little dirty. (0.25/1) 5. Service: Worst one I have ever been too. Came to this location for a late night meal around 8:30pm. For the most part, parking was not an issue because it was so late. I assume parking would be a nightmare during the day. Parking is very limited and I would probably not choose this location before 6 or 7pm. Of course for bus riders, this place is perfect. Overall, the service was fine. This location is only dine-in/take out, no restaurant. We didn't wait too long for our food. The only issue was at this time, if you want dessert, that too is limited. So we didn't get to have those lemon bars...shucks! I don't have any complaints about my food, Teriyaki Beef Plate and grilled cheese sandwich. Swear those grilled cheese sandwiches hit the spot! Based on the store logo, I thought Zippy's was an auto shop. But after passing it multiple times, it became clear that it was a fast food chain, its open 24 hours. They sell baked goods, burgers, salads, and hawaiian entrees. I can tell they're trying to be more health oriented as they sell wheat buns. But let me just tell you now, theres no point in trying to be healthy at Zippy's. I couldn't make up my mind, so I ordered the Surf Pac: Spam, 2 Fried Chicken, AND teri beef? Too good to be true. I ate this on the plane and I think everyone was jealous (and really annoyed from the smells). You MUST try the chili over rice. Kind of a random spot to go to, we headed down here right after the airport. We learned afterwards that it's not in the best location in town, but heck, I'm from Vallejo, this is still better than Church's chicken at 7pm. This was my first time having Zippy's, it's not bad, they have an interesting variety on their menu, including "Lent Specials", hollar at my fellow Catholics! I tried the chili, the mushroom burger and a one of the plate lunches with mahi mahi. They were all OK, I thought the chili was pretty good, but there wasn't anything that really would make me go out of my way to go there besides being hungry. While we realize things are difficult during Covid, the lack of customer service and communication was terrible and dangerous given how business should be conducted right now. We ordered online and pre-paid as we're still trying to support local business. We pulled into the mobile order parking stall and followed the directions on the sign to check in. We waited and after about 15 minutes got a text saying someone was bringing our order out. 10 minutes later nobody came. We called. We were transferred to someone else. The woman kept hitting the part of the phone that you speak into causing static. Then she told us, "come inside, it's not ready yet." I said, no thanks, we'll wait until it's ready since we're not supposed to be just waiting around in there. She said, "ok, she's coming out." Meaning, someone is bringing our order out, I guess." 10 minutes later, nobody came, my husband went inside, waited in line, got to the counter, then someone brought our food out. My wife and I stopped by this Kalihi branch of Zippy's for lunch because it was convenient at the time and because the food at Zippy's is always pretty consistent. It was after 1:00, there was plenty of parking and we didn't have to wait to order. I had a burrito with chili plate, no rice and extra Mac salad. My wife ordered the mini beef stew. It took over 12 minutes for our order to be called even though they weren't busy at the time. My wife was very satisfied with her beef stew, the meat was tender and flavorful. I have been ordering burrito with chili since the 70's. The price has changed, it used to be a little over 2 bucks, the burrito got smaller but the taste has never changed. It was one of my favorite meals in high school because it was tasty and cheap. Other than the long wait for our food the experience was still pretty good. read more

Several times a month, EVERY month, Zippys has been my family's go-to for non-burger take-out options...even more so during this pandemic. The online ordering option has been an awesome way for my kids to order food that I could just drive in and pick up on my way home from teaching. Today they ordered the mini chicken plate, chicken katsu and the chicken trio. I received the email confirmation at 3:14pm, and clicked on the I've arrived option at 3:21 to notify I was parked in Stall #2. My order was supposed to be ready by 3:29 so I waited. And waited...and waited. At 3:44 I got out of my car, went into the almost-empty restaurant and stood in line. There was 1 customer in front of me...and another customer who was waiting for her order. In a few minutes I approached the counter and showed my order to the cashier who proceeded to rummage through 2 orders sitting at the kitchen pass-thru. She brought my order and then asked what I had ordered even though I had already shown her. Being as I had waited over 30 mins, I drily asked the cashier if my food had just been sitting there the entire time and she said no, and claimed it had just come out of the kitchen. No apology or the wait and didn't even give me a receipt. I walked out with my order and drive home. I arrived about 15 mins later and received a text from Zippys saying they were bringing my order out to the parking lot...WTH! Opened up my mini chicken plate and could tell right away it had been sitting as the skin/breading was now soggy...and the rice was pasty, akin to day-old rice. Skip this Zippy's location unless you're desperate! Or unless you're just picking up baked goods/food to go. No offense, but the crowd here was pretty sketchy when I came in (around 1pm on a weekday)- a guy sitting at a booth smelled like pee, and there were a couple of homeless people who came in and out while we waited for our food. However, I did see people come in during their lunch breaks, but pretty much all of them were just picking up their food or taking it to go. My other gripe with this Zippy's location is that they barely had any of the good pastries left, and I was only able to purchase a few flaky donuts, napples, and danishes to take back to the mainland. I purchased: -Glazed Flaky Donut & Blueberry Cream Cheese Napple- YUMMMM, must orders! I liked that the breading wasn't too thick on the chicken, and the macaroni salad it was served with was yummy, although a little heavy on the mayo. However, I would order this dish again. The food here was a little better than the average fast food joint, but offers dishes that you won't see on the mainland. However, these prices are probably the cheapest you'll get in Hawaii! Overall, like I said earlier, skip this Zippy's location unless it's your only option. Surprising good. We ordered about seven plates and additional side items we have a large party. I can say that the food was surprisingly good, no, it was better than good it was awesome. I had the local Moto with my eggs over medium. No my ex to not come over medium bacon over easy but it's not the end of the world. No one is Expected to cook a perfect egg each time, I can't even cut the perfect or easy over medium egg 100% of the time. I totally recommend that everyone come in and try something from here they are delicious and I was told that there are several locations but this is the one that I like to read more

I generally enjoy Zippy's food but I got the Ahi Belly special at this location and it was God awful. It was breaded and fried but was way overdone, tough to chew and dry as can be. It also had a gross fishy aftertaste indicating that it wasn't fresh fish. Seriously? It's supposed to be the special. Yuck. It came with two pieces of fish. I threw 1.5 of those away. You can never go wrong with Zippy's food and so I always focus on their customer service. All the other locations I've been at always had warm smiles on their faces and great customer service. This one isn't any different. Upon arriving, I see a customer yelling at a worker and commend her for holding it together and keeping her cool. Same with the other cashiers in the front. There was one, however, that was just plain rude. I simply asked if they called my ticket number, the other cashier asked her, and rudely replied Yeah, that's the one. Right there. Ano? (What?). Manager Maritei is an awesome manager because she listens to the customers! I had an issue with a Rainbow cake I bought for my sister's birthday. It was dry and disappointing I called Zippy's and explained my issue. Maritei listened, apologized and asked me to come in. I went that night and took the rest of the cake, even though she didn't ask me to. She let me select another one. There were no other Rainbow cakes so I chose a fresh, moist and delicious Dobash cake. Thank you Maritei for listening and believing your customers. This zippy's is a lot bigger than it looks. I love the vibes and quick service here. I think it's near a school, so expect to see a ton of teens hanging out when school gets out. Solid 3 for sure. They selection was pretty large and I really enjoyed their fried chicken. The place wasn't as clean as I would have liked and they charge the same amount for a refill on your soda that they fill up with mostly ice. I'm not sure I would be a regular but it was quick and easy. If you are looking for fried chicken they this is your spot. Also I tried their chili and that had a decent amount of flavor. Nothing spectacular but decent for sure. I would say if you are traveling and need a quick bite give them a try you might be surprised. read more

Hey, before you wonder why I gave the great Zippys two stars, hear me out. You might agree with what i have to say, or you might not. Anyway, I grew up on Zippys. Fried chicken, saimin, Korean fried chicken, zip min, chili with onions and cheese, orange bang and of course my favorite, the infamous Zip pac. I still eat here even though i gave the place a measly two stars (I didn't know how to spell measly so i had to google it. haha.). I still enjoy the setting, and you can always go to your local restaurant and see a familiar face. For all this I could give this place 5 stars. Here comes the bad part. Well, first of all, you have to be semi rich to eat here. The prices have sky rocketed compared to what they used to be. Of course prices go up all the time, but we as customers are paying gourmet prices. Am I going to far? I think so, but you get the point. That is a huge complaint. The other thing that sticks out in my mind is the serving size. For some reason, they give a little less than what i was used to. The Korean chicken is a lot smaller as with some of the other plates. Now, this is the last item that i can think of at the time, but why in the world did they change the tartar sauce for the zip pac or fish plate? Man, this used to be one of the best parts of ordering a zip pac. I'd put the tartar over the fish, rice and even the chicken. The packet is smaller, and i guess they do that to save money. whew, thats a load off of my shoulders. Haha. No, honestly though, for a great time with friends or family, Zippys is a great place to go. I just don't like the fact that we are paying more for less. I come here for the fried chicken plate with a side chili on the rice. The fried chicken here is one of the best i've tasted. They charge you for the 4 oz. of side chili which is no problem but I have to question if the chili I got was actually four ounces. It looked kinda skoshi compared to what I used to get at the Ala Moana and Dillingham location. I didn't realize this until I got home. The customer service was a little lacking. I was the only making an order. The girl that was taking my order was preoccupied doing something while taking my order and didn't make eye contact either. She didn't enunciate her words too so it was kinda hard to understand. This isnt the regular Zippy's I go to. But at night, this one has some flakey people in the parking lot so always remember to lock your car. Regardless of this experience, it would not stop me from patronizing this place. Its one of the best late night stops I can think of. This review was revised because I had a message from Monica at Zippy's customer service voicing her concern with my experience. I told what had happened and she thanked me for the feedback and said they will look into the matter at that location. She also said she will mail out a voucher or credit for what I paid for the meal which I really didn't expect nor was I expecting it, so it was a surprise to me. I think its great on the part of Zippy's to take their customer concerns seriously as they do. In this day and age, when its important to keep customers happy with great customer service, you would think other establishments would key on this the same way Zippy's has thru customer feedback. read more

Best Korean chicken of any Zippy's on the island!!! Every single time I order it, it's cooked and presented extremely well. As for the rest of the food, it's just as good and in the same level from what I've seen. This Zippy's has some of the best cooks on island and puts most to shame. My family (of 17) and I just landed into Honolulu Airport and were starving so came here to the nearest Zippy's which had been recommended to me by a friend who lives on the island.. Anyway.. I think it's great food and a great cost.. About 8-12$ per person.. They do sizes small, regular, large so it will really feed whatever appetite you have. The food was prepared pretty fast which was exactly what we needed after traveling all day. My husband got the zip pac which was a variety of things like fish, fried chicken, spam, and some type of beef? I got the chicken katsu! Both were great! it has been a while since I ordered from this location. I remember when I ordered something via phone it was very fast and easy so that it's ready for pick up. I am glad to see the menu is now better and more clearer so that way people who are visiting will know what they want to order and just pick it up to go. I'm glad to see the place looks great and neat, which is wonderful. Maybe some suggestions how about using a app to placing a order so that way it is a lot quicker and easier for people who don't have time to go in person to place and order so that when it's ready they can receive a confirmation of their orders. Another thing that would be good to is having a separate line for online orders so that it would be fast and convenient for those who are ordering online or app orders. I can't believe that it took 17 minutes to get two benefit Chili. One was hot and the other was cold. In order to get my order, I had to go and ask for it as I saw many other customers that came after me and ordered after me we're getting their food. As I went to the counter, I saw a cold bag of chili and a cook squeezing it out into my container which to him 17 minutes to get to. I mentioned to the cashier that others that came in after me, at least 5 to 7 orders, got their order before me. The cashier made an excuse for the cook but there is no excuse for cold chill that takes a minute or two to squeeze out of the bag. Poor customer service!!! read more

I love me some Zippy's. When you can't decide just do a Zip Plate. Basically a little taste of everything. Plus compared to any place else in the area the price is the best for what you get and how it tastes. Sure if I lived in Hawaii I would probably not eat here everyday, its like Hawaiian fast food, but for a week long trip it sure does save the bank.
