We arrived on a Friday evening 7pm. They only had space at the counter or lounge, we chose the lounge. Kevin was our server. The lounge was quite busy. The bartender and all staff were busy. I ordered the prime rib dip, my husband ordered the Philly cheesesteak and the calamari. Everything was served promptly, hot and delicious! The prime rib dip had a 13 Coins made horseradish sauce. Very mild yet flavorful. Not too spicy. As we were completing the meal I noticed the staff was all very busy. We were staying at the Embassy Suite the same building as 13 Coins to celebrate my birthday. We had dinner at 13 Coins for the first time, we were greeted with one of the best servers I had encountered " Alan " I must say, Alan knew that menu with his eye's closed. I inform Alan I was a very picky eater so he made a suggestion that I should try the Garlic Parmesan Chicken or the steak bites? I then asked him, which one was better? That's when Alan told me that they both were really good and I can't go wrong with them. Depending on how I feel, maybe order both, so we did order both. When I tell you, that man was on point because both were beyond expectation. He also gave my husband's a recommendation and my husband enjoyed his meal. So the next night, me and my husband were suppose to go to STK House but choose to go back downtown to 13 Coins. We requested Alan be or waiter so we sat at the bar which we usually don't do. I must say, both nights he was a very busy man, helping his customers and working great with his coworkers. His personality was absolutely what you in customer service. I had order a meal that I wasn't so fond of and Alan made sure to do what he could, to correct the issue. He spoke with his manager and we got to me her and addressed my concerns with the meal didn't tasted like what I was expecting, so she informed Alan to also make sure they can help me with replacing it with something different. I then order the Chicken Alfredo, which was really good. As my husband and I was enjoying or food, we also enjoyed the company of or waiter. We stayed until closing, eating and converting with Alan. It's a strange dichotomy to come into a posh looking place to receive greasy spoon sort of food. The chairs at the counter seem designed for kings! But it's a pleasant enough place as long as you aren't expecting Michelin starred food. Martin was my server, what a charming and friendly fellow. I had the Eggs Benedict. It is extremely dinery food, despite the price and choice of adding crab for extra. I'm not usually crazy about hash browns, but these were nice and crispy in contrast to the undercooked glob I normally get elsewhere. The hollandaise is not the best and tasted a bit bland to me. The eggs are "machine poached" if that makes sense, in some sort of special tray to give them a uniform appearance as opposed to dropping them individually into a pot of its own. Because of this, one of my eggs ended up being overcooked and not runny. I hate sending food back, but in some cases I must. But big shoutout to short-order cook Mike, working hard on multiple tickets on the line and hooking me up with a fresh egg, and not just the egg but an entire new Benny! The original atmosphere when you arrive gives a high-end vibe, but when you look at the menu, it gives a brewery vibe. So that's a bit of a disconnect right out of the gate. The service was pretty limited. It took a while to be acknowledged after being sat at our table. It wasn't very busy in our section, but it did seem to have limited staff. The staff was doing the best they could with what they had. We didn't feel ignored, but you can feel the workers are stretched thin. The menu is fine for a brewery style place. Nothing was intriguing or different. Having a vegetarian with us, we did appreciate that they include an impossible burger on their menu. The drinks come out in plastic disposable cups. I've never even seen that in the dives I've frequented in my life. Yikes. The food came out pretty quickly, so the kitchen thankfully seemed to be staffed well. The meal was not necessarily $20 for a sandwich level good, but it was decent for the location. They charge a 4% service charge that isn't for the servers. That's nonsensical when you're charging $20 a plate. I'm from Seattle, and that's tourist gouging level shenanigans afoot in that regard. For plastic cup level service, LOL okay then! My coworker booked a 4:15 Wednesday afternoon reservation for our work group of 8 people. We were promptly welcomed and greeted. They showed us to a large booth with high back seats. While it looked comfy, I asked if we could sit outside to enjoy the sunny weather. They were very accommodating and took about 5 minutes to set up a perfect outdoor area. Knowing that larger parties are often more challenging when everyone pays separately, I asked our server her preference for our orders. She said "I can do whatever is easier for you!" That was so nice. The service was good, the food was tasty and the portions were just right. I had a steak salad. I asked for my steak to be medium (little pink) but it came to me with no pink. Once upon a time there was a beloved Seattle dining institution called 13 Coins. Nestled in the building that was the home of The Seattle Times (aka 'Fairview Fanny') 13C was famous for huge portions, all-hours dining, and intimate booths where the City's movers and shakers would meet to eat, drink strong drinks, and make plans. In time, the Seattle location closed because the building was demolished. 13C lived on at the airport and in Bellevue. Finally, a new location opened near the football stadium. Would it have the same magic? Read on and see... THE ROSES: Nice dining space on two levels. Happily, they have the dining counter where you can eat a Hangtown Fry at 2am and watch it being made. Ginormous portions (most items can readily be shared by two average appetites). THE THORNS: Harried, less-than-friendly staff. Watered-down drinks. Worst of all, the food is, well, average to sub-par. Worst of all was the steak dinner ordered by my friend. For $50+ she got a steak that was tough and underseasoned. Very poor value for money. They also tack a 4% surcharge on the bill to split among the non-waitstaff employees. When asked about this, the (harried) server said it was because of City Hall-imposed policies. Why don't they just roll it into the price of the items? Is this some kind of political statement? At any rate, it's a big 'booo' for me! NEITHER ROSE NOR THORN: While 13 Coins used to be famous for its late-night dining (let's face it, Seattle isn't a 'city that never sleeps'. Your options for dining after midnight are very poor in this town), I have a hard time believing anyone is going to be coming to this location in the wee hours. Thanks to the Seattle City Council, this part of the city is overrun with drugged-out zombie vagrants, and anyone who comes down here has got to be out of their minds! Proceed with caution! THE VERDICT: The King Street location of 13 Coins is, for me, the culinary equivalent of the recent movie "Mary Poppins Returns": both are reboots of beloved classics that tick all the boxes, but completely miss the point and fail to capture what made the originals so beloved. I don't see anyone beyond tourists coming here for the expensive, unremarkable food, borderline surly service, and a street scene that makes "Escape from New York"'s Manhattan look like a resort by comparison. I love this place. The service is phenomenal. And the place looks gorgeous. I sat at the bar area and the bar chairs are super plush. I ordered a Philly cheese steak and forgot to mention I was a vegetarian. They quickly accommodated and said they could create a dish for me. The chef made this delicious pasta verdura with vegetables and the flavor was great. They also gave us complimentary desert. I think we met Jojo and Nick and I would say I will be back again. Where do I start? I dined, if you can call it that, at this 13 coins location this morning and I regret that. For starters, the entire bar top was empty (maybe 2 people aside from us) and the host sat us directly across from the host stand by the door as if walking a little further down would be too much effort. We should have walked out then. I thought that ordering the chicken salad would be a safe bet - I was wrong. Please reference the attached photo to see the miscellaneous items found in my salad. Two French fries. The most wilted saddest looking tomato I've ever seen. The avocado stem. Fry basket remnants. Aside from these unwelcome ingredients, the salad was bad. I'll leave it at that. I would pay the same amount (overpriced) to not eat that meal. I wish I could say there was anything pleasant about the experience. The service may have been worse than the salad. Talk about a ghost town. The overall ambiance I expected to be more enjoyable. It was drafty even though we were sat "on the warm side". Main reason I am here is because the service from Alan was impeccable! Been going to 13 coins for over 20 years at various locations so I know the menu well. What truly makes the experience here is the consistency for certain dishes and the service. We went the night before Christmas Eve for our date night. Alan went above and beyond with service. Made us laugh and it was cool to just have a genuine conversation. We even told his manager Caesar who was nice as well. However I want it to be known that Alan was phenomenal! Instead of comping the soup due to their mistake, she rung me up again. Another wait .. after 5 minutes I told her she needed to expedite it since they are just "scooping from a pot into a bowl, no cooking involved". After all of that, the food in my order was soggy due to the waiting. When I got to the room I realized they didn't give me dressing for the 2 salads ...
