Sunday brunch at 18 Oaks Restaurant was by far our favorite meal while visiting San Antonio. The A.W. Marriott Resort & Golf Course is beautiful. 18 Oaks Restaurant is the high end steak house on the the resort. It's beautifully decorated, well-appointed, has very friendly staff, and delicious food. The brunch buffet is well-stocked with handmade Breads and cheeses, hot dishes including bacon, sausage hash browns with poached eggs, macaroni and cheese, and chicken and waffles just to name a few. There is also a Carving Station with roast beef, and roast turkey, and a dipping sauce for the turkey that is the personal recipe of one of the kitchen staff. There is also a lovely dessert bar, as well as an ice cream sundae station. If that were not enough there are also omelettes, waffles, and other items that you order from your server and are at your table and just a few minutes. Did I mention that there is a raw bar with colossal shrimp, oysters and jumbo crab legs?! My favorite bite of the day was a blueberry scone topped with baked ricotta and preserves. If you're going to be in San Antonio for a Sunday afternoon you must stop by 18 Oaks for brunch. read more

The title of my review isn't without research. I do enjoy a good brunch and have been to a great many, the better ones promising their own special offerings that make them unique or memorable. 18 Oaks has claimed the top spot in my list of brunch locales after our visit there for Easter Sunday. My first visit there was a few months back, and I was thick into a strict Ketogenic diet. Even with these restrictions (no bread, no starches, no sweets), the brunch was still incredible. The charcuterie table alone is a sight to behold. Alongside it, the buffet of boiled shrimp, raw oysters on the half shell, and crab claws and legs (sliced open for easy eating) made it very convenient for me to quickly filled my plate. The carving table next to this featured leg of lamb and prime rib, both cooked perfectly. Proteins? Check. Today, I wasn't strictly following my diet, and I took advantage of this by indulging in everything I couldn't before. I took a trip down the breakfast menu, and started with the 18 Oaks Eggs Benedict, their turn on this classic that includes braised short rib. This is a must-have, but I went ahead and tried the chocolate chip Belgian waffle and the French toast too. You know, for science... Next, I hit the buffet and visited the lunch offerings. The standouts for me were the quail and the roasted local vegetables. There were a number of other delicious offerings, so there's something for all. After all of this, I saved room for dessert, and visited the Bananas Foster station, where they prepare each serving lovingly. One more trip into the dessert room and I loaded up on a key lime tart, a carrot cake cupcake, a strawberry cake, and a Creme Brûlée. I know, that sounds excessive, but they're small servings. Wait, I forgot to mention the bottomless mimosas, poinsettias, or champagne! While I didn't have any, I did drink an incredible Bloody Mary, which was also included. The coffee with my dessert course was great too. Service is top notch, as is the ambiance of the establishment. Both visits were a delight and with it being Easter, the larger crowds didn't detract from either for this brunch spot. If I had to use 1 word to describe 18 oaks it is elegant. There is simply no other word I can find to describe the experience. My family and I went on Mother's Day for brunch. The staff greeted us cheerfully as soon as we walked in, promptly seated us and explained the menu. We ate off of he buffet and ordered one item from the menu as well. The bottomless mimosas were so refreshing. They had everything we could think of and left so full. Definitely make reservations. I'm not sure they will seat you without one. read more

I was staying at the JW Marriott for business travel and came here for dinner one night. Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by how good everything was! We started out with the crab cakes, bacon, and wedge salad. All were delicious and the complimentary rolls were the bomb! They came with jerky and pickles as well which is always a plus. Most of us got steak for our entrees- I had the 7 ounce filet which was cooked perfectly. Sides are a la carte so we split the cauliflower and au gratin potatoes. Potatoes were so so but the cauliflower was very tasty. Didn't have a chance to try dessert, but the choices looked great! This was hands down the most delicious meal I've ever eaten. I don't know how I can eat a steak from somewhere else ever again. The Wagyu is beyond words. It melts in your mouth. My husband and I made reservations here to celebrate our anniversary, and the hostess asked our name then immediately congratulated us on our celebration. Our waiter, Oscar, was fantastic and delivered superb service. We both ordered the Wagyu in different cuts, but we shared the mac'n cheese and creamed corn. We also had the cheesecake. I should start with the service- it was great and deserving of 5 star. I ate here twice and both the wait staff and the bartenders treated me kindly and promptly. They recommended food items that ended up being delicious. First time, I got the wagyu filet, Brussel sprouts, and mashed potatoes. The steak was perfectly cooked and the mashed was yummy. The brussel sprouts weren't good- over cooked, mostly burnt. I'm a huge fan of brussel sprouts and they can be delicious when cooked right, it really turned me towards the 4 star since that is an item you have to get right if you list it on menu. Second time I got The scallops, mushrooms, cauliflower, asparagus. Shrooms were okay- not something to brag about, asparagus was tasty and cooked right, scallops were excellent, and cauliflower didn't really leave the serving plate(says enough). Desert was cheesecake, creme brûlée, and and cobbler of some sort. All very delicious. All in all, it's an expensive restaurant that provides service worth the money, steak worth the money, and a good wine list. read more

I went for a large dinner party for a work event and the restaurant was closed off for the evening. That being said, it was a preset menu, none the less, the selection was great and very good flavors going on.. I would like to go back to try their dinner menu, but did try their options throughout the event I was attending.. good stuffs! Service was quick, superb and detail oriented. They constantly made sure that not an empty plate was on the table, and not a low glass of wine was there waiting to be filled either. Because it was a company event, we didn't even see prices, but due to the service and the presentation and quality of the food.. We came here for Christmas brunch and it didn't disappoint. I highly recommend this place. You walk in and you're greeted w a table full of decadent desserts. All the food delicious. There were so many options. For the Christmas brunch they had a whole table full of bread, a salad section, charcuterie area, oysters, crab, shrimp. They had the typical hot food such as bacon, sausage, prime rib, fish, veggies, and mac and cheese. They had a few special items that were a la carte but still included w the brunch. Poor customer service. The food was great but the hostess and the manager need a LOT of additional training in putting the customer first. We visited the restaurant this past Sunday when they are going through renovations to the bar area. Fine. But at 645pm the construction workers were still working and that included nail gunning. Asked if we could sit in the dining area furthest away to avoid the noise and was told "no that dining room in closed". Ok sat, ate. And what do I see as we are wrapping up? They seat a couple in the supposedly closed area. Wow. I speak with the hostess as to why I was not provided the same option when I asked for a table ... her response "my manager did it not me let me get her". Ok. For the price, you should go to Bob's instead. We went here for a family dinner while staying at the JW Marriott. The steaks had a good crust, but two of the three were cooked wrong. We all asked for medium, but two of the three were well done. The scallops were cooked perfectly, but the honey sauce was too sweet, not enough spice for Texas. You could not even taste the jalapeño. The sides were very average, the baked mac and cheese was good, but the spinach was so bad we sent it back and they took it off the bill. The wine list is decent, but mostly safe high end offerings. The desert menu sounded good, but the chocolate cake was the most popular, so we tried it. Solid B- Overall, the service was good. This is a solid option for a hotel restaurant, but you are paying for a Bob's or Pappa's Brothers, and the food is not on that level. Not even close. Would not recommend. read more

Amazing brunch!! My husband and I celebrated our anniversary there and decided to try their Sunday brunch buffet. What a great experience! Atmosphere was nice. We dressed semi-casual and did not have any problem for brunch time. The server came to greet and was very nice. We started off with unlimited mimosas, you can order eggs benedict, omelette, waffles, etc. to be made for you. Don't worry, they are smaller portion so you still get to try other food! The buffet has variety of food; raw oysters, crab legs, vegetable, charcuterie and great selection of bread. I didn't know what to choose! They also had carving station for prime rib, it was so tender and delicious. Desert was probably my favorite part. They were all very rich, not overly sweet, and very beautiful! This is a late review. We celebrated my birthday with friends and the high review is for our waiter. He was extremely nice and down to earth. This is a higher end restaurant and I'm the type that I don't forget where I came from. We aren't serious people we like to joke and the waiter was very personable and not uptight. Everything about the experience was great. We spent our anniversary trying a new place and we were not disappointed. The service was outstanding from beginning to end. Everything was explained in great detail. We ate the crab cakes and bacon for an appetizer. Crab cakes were delicious, the bacon was good but nothing amazing. For the main course, we had the Wagyu filets. These filets had to be one of the best pieces of meat I have ever eaten. It was amazingly tender. The sides we chose were the duck fat french fries, the mac and cheese and the creamed corn. All of them were freshly made and quite tasty. My experience at 18 Oaks yesterday was amazing. But make sure you have a reservation before going, it can be pretty packed. The vibe is amazing, the feel you get is welcoming, the decor and lighting is just perfect for a romantic dinner or get together with close friends. The serve is amazing, they have so many waiters taking care of you that you barely have to wait for anything. Louis was our main waiter. He mentioned he was in training but he seemed so experienced. He was so knowledgeable about their menu that we ended picking his suggestions for the 7 oz filet mignon, shareable sides (asparagus and French fries), and three deserts (couldn't pick, but the bread pudding was the best). Our waiter was very knowledgeable about the steaks. They serve you this delicious bread. The crab cakes, chicken, cauliflower soup and the onion soup were delicious. There were four of us and no one liked the mushrooms. The bone in rib-eye and Kansas City strip steaks were cooked to perfection and were delicious. Let's set the scene... our 10th Anniversary celebration, big gorgeous resort that we were staying at, highly recommended by workers in the resort. Folks come from outside the resort to eat here.. cutting edge food... the resort is pretty full better make a reservation.. etc.. Saturday arrived and we got excited about what we were going to eat and drink. We arrive promptly at 6.30pm, me rushing Suzi Q to get ready... don't want to be late! Taa Daa.. we arrive.. to a completely empty restaurant. I crap you negative. We were the only couple in the entire place.. 6.30pm on a Saturday night.. this didn't bode well. I fully admit, that I thought about leaving right there. I mean the place is huge! And you could of heard a nun fart, a silent but deadly, under her robe and habit. However, it was our big night.. we had a couple of cocktails already and didn't think driving to downtown San Antonio would be a good option. So, we wandered over to our table Since it was a special night, I ordered us a righteous bottle of Veuve Clicquot Champagne to set the mood for my honey. Waiter returned to let us know that they were out. OUT! How could the fancy smanchy cutting edge 5 star restaurant be out of their most expensive bottle of bubbily??? Dumbfounded I look bewildered at my waitress and she makes a recommendation of a bottle of Chandon. So we go with Napa Valley rather than the French bubbily selection. I be looking pretty dang impressive to my bride at this point. (a quick note... when I mentioned this to one of the managers the next day at another bar in the resort, they wondered why they just didn't walk over and pick up a bottle of Veuve from them.. yes, why indeed, perhaps their segway was out of juice) Bottle arrived, time for food. Ordered the Oysters, it was a night of love after all, Suzi Q got a steak, I got the lobster ($58) and we sat comfortably in our big people sofa/chair thingy looking out over an empty restaurant. We giggled and poked each other as we waited for our food. Oysters were tasty and tiny. Salad crunchy and seasoned properly. Steak arrived cooked to temp and my lobster made its debut. They had thoughtly cut the dude in half and took out the claw meat for me so I didn't have to start flinging lobster bits all over the nice clean restaurant trying to get to the meat. It seemed to have been seared on the grill. While the claws were tender and juicy the tail meat was a little chewier than I recall lobster in the past. This made me think that either the Lobster had walked from Maine to San Antonio or it had been dead for awhile before I ordered it. After all, had he been freshly dunked in boiling water, we would of probably been able to hear his last shrill of a dying death song. Anyhow... we finished up and our tab arrived. One look and I started my dying death song.. it was definitely pricey, but $238 with tip, for what turned out to be really nothing that special was a little more than what I thought dinner was worth. My friends and I recently visited 18 Oaks at the JW Marriott resort in San Antonio for a Friday night dinner. I was certainly very excited to try the premier restaurant at this massive resort, but that excitement was unfortunately very short-lived. The restaurant itself is very nicely designed. The dining room is dimly-lit, and though it is a very large open area, the table spacing keeps the place feeling cozy, managing to keep the dining room relatively quiet. I was immediately impressed with the kindness of our server, who enthusiastically greeted us. If there is one thing I can say about 18 Oaks is that the service is extremely attentive, keeping the meal fairly well paced. Rather, it was the food itself that I found profoundly disappointing. We immediately got started off on the wrong foot when I ordered a half-dozen oysters on the half shell. These were described as East Coast Bluepoint oysters, one of my favorites to enjoy in the raw. I was a bit taken aback when the plate arrived with 10 oysters instead of the expected 6. However, I immediately realized why the kitchen was being generous: these oysters were absolutely anemic. Each one was paper-thin, with practically no substance. While the flavor was fine, it was readily apparent that these oysters were not fresh. Oysters on the half-shell are supposed to be technically still alive, and full of body. These, however, were obviously far from fresh, and I suspect that they had arrived in the kitchen and had been shucked days before. For a restaurant of this supposed caliber, this was patently unacceptable. When I notified our server, she readily admitted that these were not up to par, and offered to take them off our bill (though she forgot to do so at the end of the meal). This was a nice gesture, but I was a dismayed that they knew beforehand that the oysters were not up to snuff, yet they still took my order, hoping I wouldn't notice the exceptionally poor quality, and would instead be dazzled by the seemingly generous extra helping. Honestly, for these prices, and for a setting such as this, they frankly should have known better than to serve this batch of oysters. This cast a pall over the entire rest of the meal. Next up were the salads. My friends ordered the wedge, which they remarked was quite good. I ordered the caesar salad, but was not as impressed. The caesar is served with whole leaves of romaine, and topped with what appears to be tempura-fried anchovies. All of this was fine, except the salad was positively drenched with dressing. I had to scoop large globs of it out of the crevice of the hearts in order to be able to prepare a bite that wasn't all dressing. Another surprisingly disappointing course. The steaks fared better. I ordered the 16oz. ribeye medium rare, and it was technically prepared as such. However, unlike some of the better steaks I've had (or grilled up myself), they seemed to be cooked with only temperature in mind. That is to say that while the inside was pink and slightly warm, the outside lacked any real semblance of a good sear, which is the mark of a truly fine steak. As such, the entire thing was soft inside and out. It was, to be fair, a nice cut of meat, but again, you would figure that a place of this caliber would take better care to properly grill the steak to preserve the moisture while at the same time providing the texture and flavor that comes with a nice bit of char on the surface. I also find it interesting that sauce comes standard with each cut of meat. While the bernaise and the chimichurri sauces were good, I had some misgivings about slathering a nice cut of meat with a sauce. Yes, the sauce comes on the side, but in my opinion, a good cut of meat that is well-prepared should be able to stand on its own, something to which everyone else at the table agreed. All in all, this was a very disappointing meal. I frankly expected better from the flagship restaurant of a luxury resort. While everything (except the oysters) was certainly edible, and the cuts themselves were above-average, the preparation left much to be desired, considering the relatively premium price. I know the resort is relatively new, but after a year in business, I would have expected them to have worked out the kinks by now. I simply cannot recommend 18 Oaks at the present time. read more

I had dinner here one night with the family. Since this was the most expensive and upscale restaurant at the JW Marriott, I would hoping the food would live up to it. I ordered a wedge salad and the grilled diver scallops. The scallops were so salty that I couldn't even finish it. Had some truffled cream corn on the side, which was OK. I was pretty disappointed that it didn't meet my expectations, but what do you expect? This is a restaurant within a resort. They're constantly packed and have no incentives to improve their food. I'll start with the good before I get to the really bad. We went to 18 Oaks on January 1st with a large party. There were 12 of us and they put us in a really nice private room that fit our party perfectly. The service started out okay and the appetizers were really good, that was about it. The drinks took a very long time to get and several of my friends drinks were not brought out, or the wrong drinks were brought to the table. When the server brought out the entrees, he gave my steak to someone else at the table who proceeded to eat my medium steak, no big deal, right? Well the server told me I should just eat the well done steak that was intended for my friend. I opted for them to cook me a new steak. Unfortunately everyone at the table was done when my steak arrived. I guess they were in such a hurry to get my steak done that it was charred on the outside and rare on the inside. Not a good steak at all. Throughout our ordering process, I thought we made it very clear we wanted separate checks by letting the waiter know, "put this on our check" or "put that on their check". When it came time for the check, the waiter said, "I hope it's okay, I put this on one check." Uh, No. It took them 20 minutes (no exaggeration) to split the check. The women in our party got sick of waiting so they left and went back to the hotel. When we finally got the split checks, they were all wrong. At that point we were all sick of being there and our experience was ruined, so we all just threw in cash and left. If you come to this restaurant with a party of 2 or 4, I imagine it could be pretty good. Crab legs, lobster spinach avocado omelets, bananas foster and unlimited mimosas. Great selections also meat carving station of turkey and prime rib. Was told we would have to wait until our 7:45 reservation (it was made at 7:30 and confirmed) so we sat at the bar to get a drink. Waited a long time to be acknowledged. Got a lemon drop martini, was told they were out of glasses (no biggie) so he made in a different one. The first lemon drop martini I have never finished (couldn't even stomach half) Our server was slow coming around to check on us. We were waiting to order for over 5 minutes, and also finished are food just sitting there for about 10. Just really bad service. Everyone was friendly enough but not quick. FOOD: Chicken was really good. The bread's butter was WAY too salty that it made my roll inedible. The Spinach was awful (like baby food mixed with salt) the mac and cheese was pretty darn good. I have had better but this was my favorite thing in the meal. My husbands 42 day aged steak was AWFUL. I almost spit out the bite he gave me. We are quite the steak lovers and have tried everywhere from Ruth Chris, Mortons, Del Frisco etc. but this was worse then some crap I would get at logans. I would rather Logans (and boy, I do not like Logans) We got crème brulee for dessert (my favorite thing of all time) and I was unimpressed. The custard was more like pudding instead of that light texture I love about Crème Brulee. And this is the first time me and my hubby did not finish the crème brulee ANYWHERE. COST: Normal price for an upscale steakhouse. Problem is, they are not upscale. You can put fine china on your tables and force your staff into monkey suits, but if you don't have the food/service to back it up you really shouldn't try. Lesson learned that we should have gone off resort. Its sad that at a place as nice as the JW you cannot have a 5 star meal. read more

Beyond 5 stars! We visited the resort last week (5/23/19) We sat at the bar for the happy hour prices. The bartender went above and beyond guiding us through the menu, but he also gave us a complimentary taste of the new qual they added to the menu after my husband had a tough choice decided between the qual or pork chop for his meal. He ended up choosing the pork chop, so the bartender brought out a piece for each of us, beautifully dressed with the sauces. Each part of our meal only got better. We were stuffed at the end but I was dying to try the peppermint crepe brûlée, so we came back later that night for dessert! The hostess remembered us and sat us with another very friendly server who guided my husband into picking his dessert. Which was MASSIVE. Best part was afterwards in conversation, we mentioned we were there for our 5 year anniversary, so when we got the bill we were only charged for one dessert. I went to 18 Oaks for an early business dinner. My beef with this place is that it is VERY hard to find. I was literally driving around the JW Marriott property for 20 minutes looking for a sign to point me in the right direction. There is no sign! I eventually had to ask the valet for the hotel if they could walk me over to the restaurant because I was running late at this point! But now that the negative is out of the way, on to the great food! This is a steakhouse but no one in my group ordered steak so I cannot speak for it. We had the following: Duck Fat Fries, Skillet Fontina, Jalopeno Honey Scallops, Crab Cakes, Peach and Goat Cheese Salad, Tomato and Mozzarella Salad, Carrots and the Truffle Corn. And everything was very very good. The chefs try to source everything within 100 miles of the hotel grounds and even have some gardens on site where they grow the veggies and herbs. I really want to come back here for a date night with my boyfriend, and try to the steak! The other reviewers are right in that the atmosphere is not your typical dark, masculine steakhouse but it does not take away from the experience. I will be back! read more

Great experience, we went on an off night (Monday night). Everything was top notch. The wait staff, apps, sides, steak, dessert and drinks were all prepared and presented well. We will be trying the brunch in a few weeks and hope it lives up to tonight's dinner. FYI, if your a craft beer fan you will enjoy the few local brews they have on tap. read more

My husband and I tried 18 Oaks during San Antonio Restaurant Week 2011 and were very delighted to discover a great new dinner spot. Our dinner started with yummy complimentary bread served with a small side of bread & butter pickles and teriyaki beef jerky (all made in-house). The pickles and jerky added a small, special touch to a piece of the meal that is, at most, usually only 'ok'. I ordered the lump crab cake for an appetizer and it was flavored well and sitting in a nice light sauce. My husband had the heirloom tomato and mozzarella (also made in-house!) salad drizzled with aged balsamic - we both enjoyed it. Dinner consisted of bison tenderloin accompanied by grilled asparagus and mashed potatoes as well as seared sea scallops with truffled cream corn. Dessert tickled every taste bud that hadn't already been tantalized (but there weren't many!) - a small individually dished blackberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream sitting on toasted chopped peanuts - OH YUM! My husband doesn't even like blackberries, but he ate every last bite of that dessert. The servers were very attentive and helpful and the ambiance was quiet and romantic without being overly pretentious. I should add, that outside of Restaurant Week, our meal would have run us close to $150 without drinks, so this is more of a special occasion place. Some might say the amount of food you get isn't' worth the price, but I totally disagree. While you don't get huge portions, you get just the right amount (6-8 ounces of meat/main dish) that leaves you full, but not completely stuffed. Great dinner with colleagues. Apricot Lemon Drop Martini -- perfect First course - chilled jumbo lump crab & avocado - delicious Second course - smoked tomato bisque with shrimp - soooo good. I'm a soup person and this one is fabulous. Third course - mini iceberg salad -- excellent. Fourth course and sides - 8oz Wagyu Filet, truffle cream corn, mashed potatoes, asparagus: everything was made very well. The cream corn is a stand out. Dessert Duo - mini flourless chocolate cake and mascarpone cheese cake - both were excellent but the cheese cake was divine. read more
