We booked through OpenTable for Christmas dinner, day-of, as they had their usual menu but also a special Holiday pre-fix. W're glad we made reservations because a few parties without one had a significant wait. None of us got the pre-fix. This is what we ordered, came out to $102.00 for 3 people: 1) Roasted cauliflower with blue cheese dressing (hold the buffalo sauce) 2) Honey glazed fried chicken with mash and asparagus 3) Chicken fried steak with mash and asparagus 4) Goat cheese and strawberry salad with chicken added. 5) 2 beers and 1 glass of wine 6) Hazelnut torte dessert The fried chicken and mashed potatoes were excellent. The chicken fried steak wasn't bad but wasn't the best we've had either. The roasted cauliflower with blue cheese dressing was simple and delicious. The hazelnut dessert was very sweet but we all enjoyed a couple bites. All together the meal was great and prices affordable. Cute ambiance and nice walking through the Driskell Hotel lobby. This made for a lovely holiday dinner and we had a great time. We will be back! read more

Nestled in the fabulous Driskill Hotel, this spot is worth a visit. My husband ordered the Austin American Breakfast and I ordered the Hippie Hollow. Both dishes looked and tasted great - especially the sweet potatoes mixed in their country potatoes! The service was friendly and the venue was charming. We topped off our morning meal with a walk through the Driskill lobby and lounge after breakfast. Sweet! read more

Located on the first floor of the historic and posh Driskill hotel, 1886 Cafe & Bakery serves an excellent brunch and bakery items. The eggs benedict and the pecan waffles where scrumptuos and tasty. The desserts are to die for and are reasonably priced. Following Rachel Ray of 40$/a day Food TV fame - i'd go here specifically to experience the desserts. So I decided to walk randomly down the rather famous sixth street during the middle of the day and I thought I would check things out. I found their historic vehicle sitting out front and in seeing it i figured I would go check the place out. I entered through the wrong door and was thoroughly lost. The young waitress directed me to the front where I grabbed a menu and decided to check it out. I ordered the Peach Buttermilk Cheesecake because I really like cheese cake. I posted the picture for it. It was absolutely delightful. There was a strong creamy texture and the cookie it came on was soft and delightful. The meriengue I didn't really find to be quite enlightening, but it all just came together with the caramelized peach on top. Can't wait to come back here again, maybe for dinner eventually when I get rich. read more

Tried four desserts with a friend. Chocolate eclair has salted caramel and is dangerous (as in too good), apple tart has some wonderful almond taste in the breading, banana pudding was just wonderful, the chocolate cake however was a little dry - would have enjoyed a little Debbie's just as much. Coffee, although good is not strong, I even added an expresso shot and it was still not very strong. Returned the next day and had the Driskill burger for lunch. I didn't splurge calorie wise for the bacon because the menu says the beef is "grass fed" and I wanted to see if that translated to a better taste - it did, there was a nice beef flavor. That aside I wouldn't rate it highly because the bread was a little dry, perhaps it sat out in the open all morning? The tomatoes were disgusting in looks, green mostly with splotches of dark red, I pulled them off. The serving of fries was generous and good, thin cut with what looked like sea salt. There was enough food two people watching their weight could share the burger plate... The staff is friendly enough but really the service was rather forgettable which is a disappointment for this nice of a hotel. By contrast the desk clerk at check-in was exceptionally friendly as were two of the doormen. read more

I love the Driskill. When I walk in it feels as if I travel in time, in a very posh way. I wanted to have brunch at the1886 on a Sunday morning. Despite the stated wait time was an hour, we only waited around 30 minutes. The service was great, food was delicious. My only suggestion to 1886 management will be, please pay closer attention to your hosts and hostesses. The hostess who was at the front taking table requests was very far from friendly and welcoming. She was very short when she addressed us and unpleasant. Luckily, she was replaced by a gentleman shortly after and we did not have to deal with her much longer. 1886 is worth visiting even to see the beautiful interior. read more

Did not disappoint! Every time I visit Austin I always leave without going to 1886. Boy was it worth the wait because it was nothing short of fantastic. We ordered the avocado toast, Paris Benedict, and the Barzos Rancheros. Service was great from ordering to the staff cleaning tables for you to sit and checking to make sure everything came out correct. I will definitely be visiting here again to continue exploring their menu. read more

Our waiter, didn't catch his name but was from Scotland, was awesome. Very on his game and even though they were busy, we never felt like we waited for anything. The portions were good sized, the food was very good, and the cocktails were perfect. We wanted mimosas but wanted to control our OJ Mix. He suggested we get a carafe of champagne and would bring us our OJ to mix. Perfect. I don't usually like eating in hotel restaurants, overpriced and nothing exceptional about the food, but this is not your usual hotel restaurant. It's very good and was open well before others on a weekday morning. read more

We were a little bit apprehensive to eat breakfast at the hotel without exploring for better options but after walking in- taking in the decor and the smells we knew it would be a good choice. We were immediately seated and the chairs were all incredibly comfortable. The waiter came and took our drink orders. The coffee, juices and lattes all came out quickly. I ordered the juevos rancheros and my wife had the waffle with berries and pecans-- it was in the shape of Texas. It was light and bready at the same time-- one of the best waffles ever. The juevos rancheros were served in a little skillet with potatoes on the bottom and a layer of salsa and chorizo in the middle - with eggs, avocado and sour cream on top. Absolutely awesome flavor!! Seriously cool place to get breakfast and the service is very fast. Will be back for sure! read more

Oh em gee! That chocolate croissant and almond croissant were out of this world. The flaky layers and dark chocolate were the perfect combo. The almond had an amazing almond gel filling. Highly recommend them as appetizers! The bacon and leek quiche were a perfect combo. The kid had the Texas shaped waffle with fruit and was very happy. read more

Located in the Driskill hotel, this cafe is a beautiful Victorian style that is perfect for brunch with friends, parents, or a date. Free refills on drip coffee (always a plus!), and the Texas waffle is a must for visitors looking to grab an IG pic of their brunch - not to mention the best waffle I've ever had. read more

As a tourist from Oregon, I came to this beautiful city of Austin in search for the lifestyle and openness I've heard people associate with it. No sleep and a few hours on a shaky plane pass and I seek nothing other than coffee to perk me up. First place I visit in Austin with my friends is this lovely joint. My friend and I made our orders only to be ridiculed by the barista as drinking nothing but Starbucks. To quote, "what is that some kind of Starbucks drink? I don't do that". Pretentious does not even begin to describe this baristas demeanor. Offer suggestions, kindly work your way around the fact you make certain drinks different. Do not accuse us of being a certain type of person because we prefer a certain kind of drink. Head up his ass so far he was coming out back his neck reeking of pretentiousness. read more

I've been here multiple times--the food is OK, but the service is either OK or terrible. Why I keep coming back is a mystery. The salmon salad is my favorite--definitely good for a lunch. But for a "bakery," the cookies were pretty bad: I tried the chocolate chip, and it was hot...singed from a microwave. And the servers are either fine (not great) or really bad. Once, a server took about 30 minutes to return the check--not OK for a quick lunch break. Very disappointing for a restaurant in such a beautiful, historic hotel. read more

It was late, and I was hungry, but not ravenous. I just wanted something light. There were two salads on the menu that I was interested in, and the kitchen was happy to make a special one for me by sort of combining the two. I was served quickly, the price was right, and the service was super friendly. They were busy that night, and the waiter could've easily been crabby, but he was all smiles. This should be a 4.5 star review. The service was outstanding and the food was delicious. The server made my kids feel special and this is very important to me. The decor is a little dated and considering the food prices, I would update the tables and chairs. I had the mussels and frites and my partner had the green chile pork macaroni and cheese. Both entrees were flavorful and well executed. My daughter had the famous cheese soup. It was extremely rich, but delicious. We ended with the banana split, which was divine! read more

We're staying at The Driskill and wanted to try their brunch at 1886 Cafe. We arrived around 10:15 and had a 20 min wait. We were seated at a high top table and our server arrived shortly after being seated. I ordered a caramel latte and my husband got a $14(!) Bloody Mary. My latte was good and at $5 was comparable to a coffee shop. My husbands Bloody Mary was a little spicy, had a sweet bacon, celery, olives,etc in it. He likes it but didn't think it was worth $14. I ordered the hot chicken with biscuits and sausage gravy. The chicken was spicy but tender and tasty. They were very stingy with the gravy. My daughter ordered the Hangover omelet. It was good, the chorizo was a good quality meat but it was a small omelet with some mixed potatoes on the side and not worth the price. Our son ordered the Texas waffle which was good but not much food for $12+. My hubby got the cowboy breakfast and really enjoyed it. The beef rib was tender with lots of flavor. It was a good meal but very expensive...but, what can we expect for high end hotel restaurant food? read more

DESSERT! So my friends and I had just finished lunch at Cozzoli's and needed our usual sweet fix. So we walked a bit farther downtown to this lovely little cafe. We walked up the steps of a gorgeous building and we were greeted by a very friendly host. We got seated and were immediately greeted by our server. He quickly brought us out our waters and took our orders quickly. In maybe 5-7min (it felt like), out came three BEAUTIFUL dessert plates. The Buttermilk Pie, Strawberry Banana Cheesecake, and Pecan pie (i'll post pictures at a later time). The buttermilk pie was probably my favorite. Sweet and creamy and came with blueberries and strawberries. The texture was soft and fluffy. Pecan pie wasn't extraordinary. it was still good- a classic a la mode. Cheesecake was different for me in a good way. I have never had a banana flavored cheesecake so when it came out i thought, "ooh. that's different." It was chocolatey crust with a layer of strawberry cheesecake, then banana, topped with a dollop of whipped cream carmalized banana slices and a chocolate straw with strawberries on the side. It looked gorgeous as well. I didn't want to eat it since it was so pretty, anyway, i did and it was great. Tasted like a strawberry banana smoothie in cheesecake form. Atmosphere was very light and casual and relaxed. The place was bright, well lit, and there's a connecting bar. :) read more

Started with their local IPA beer on draft. Charles was our waiter and he seemed distracted or just plain busy. As a result the service was not all that it should have been for this place. He was not horrible I just expected more. The IPA was good, but was served in a glass that was room temp and not cooled. The food I ate was just alright. I had their house burger and fries. The fries had little taste and the burger was warm. I got the impression that maybe it had sat a minute or two before being brought out. It's in a great spot in town and has an interesting feel to the place. However, not a major hang out spot nd I don't think I'll be back. This town has to much to offer! read more

Brunch!! The huevos rancheros are flavor-central! I promise you will not regret ordering them. While I loved my main dish, I was head-over-heels for the cinnamon roll!! OMG! I have a sweet tooth, but I don't love sickly sweet and heavy. This cinnamon roll is made with a dough similar to a croissant dough; it was much lighter than what you would typically think of for a cinnamon roll and the frosting was perfection- not overly sweet. I will me dreaming about the 1886 cinnamon roll forever (I'm a Bostonian)! It's worth the splurge, trust me!! read more

Good queso - what? really? Good queso at the 1886 bakery? Yes, I'm serious. Good, spicy flavor and a little black bean mixed in if you want them. Really good. My wife and mother-in-law loved the artichoke poppers (replacing the jalapenos with artichoke leaves), but I wasn't a huge fan. Okay, honesty time. I was already a little drunk when we got here, and I was entranced by the Hangover burger (Black Angus Beef, Cheddar Cheese, Brown Sugar & Chili Rubbed Bacon, Sunny Side Up Egg & Crispy Hash Browns). I instantly regretted the decision the rest of the night. It was a good burger, don't get me wrong, but the extra calories and clogged arteries from the egg and hash browns just weren't worth it. I felt nasty the rest of the night. Prime rib was decent, and the brisket was actually close to a pot roast, which was surprising. Wasn't able to try any of the delicious looking desserts during our trip, so hopefully we'll get another chance. read more

Been here twice now, and still really enjoy the food here. It did seem like the Quinoa wasnt quite as good this time as last, a little too "soy"ee... I assume they soak the mushroom in it. Otherwise the waiter that we had both times is a really jovial guy and makes the experience fun. Didn't do a dessert this time, and apparently they don't comp desserts for bdays either... lol... we tried, but thats probably good, because I didn't need anymore sweets and their stuff is really good. The Clam Chowder was amazing... couldnt get enough of that! Give it a try. read more

Established in 2002.

In 1969, when The Driskill Hotel was threatened with demolition, the Heritage Society of Austin rallied local citizens to save their beloved landmark with a bake sale and selling stocks. Later, the Heritage Society founded the 1886 Lunchroom & Socializing Parlor, successfully operating for 20 years featuring their own family recipes. In honor of the 1886 Lunchroom, on July 4, 2002, the 1886 Cafe & Bakery opened, bringing back time-honored original recipes while infusing innovative flair from its talented chefs.

My friend got the Croissant Scramble with brisket. The presentation of the croissants when brought to the table blew me away. It was wrapped up in the cutest paper with the ends twisted. The topic of conversation was how good the croissants were. Before we left, we ordered some delicious cookies. The chocolate chips were yummy. So I went the following day and grabbed some pastries! One in particular was the Pecan Bar. The following week, another friend and I stopped in for the Chicken Pesto Omelet. I like that the fire-roasted bell peppers and onions are cooked, if that's the right word. But l have to tell you, the Mexican Hot Chocolate drink brings on the flavor, as does the ice-cold Mocha. They refunded me $15 to account for the difference, and I felt pressured to accept since I needed something for the dinner that night. Unfortunately, the situation got worse from there. When we cut into the cake, it turned out to be confetti--not chocolate. Then, when we tried to eat it, it was clearly stale, dry, and inedible. No one touched it after the first bites. It completely missed the mark for what was supposed to be a special moment. What's especially frustrating is that I ordered from them last year for the same occasion, and everything went perfectly--that's why I trusted them again. This time, however, it was a complete letdown from start to finish. When I called the next day to request a refund, I asked to speak with a manager but was told that wasn't possible. Instead, I was told I would only be offered a partial refund because I accepted the replacement cake. I understand that mistakes happen, but the lack of accountability and quality here was really disappointing--especially for something as important as a birthday celebration.

Two pastries , I don't remember the name but one of them was chocolate based and other was fruit with cream cheese, super yum. They also have fig cake which is super yum and does not taste extra sugary at all. That's the just try if you can find it. Usually it comes in the thanksgiving season but since I saw that, I tried their fig cake slice as well. Overall good experience. Most of the pastry and cake slices are between 6-8 dollars.

They were gooey in the middle, perfectly crisp on the outside, and rich without being eye-squinting sweet. The chocolate chip cookies had welcoming textures and flavors. So when I found out they opened a brick-and-mortar location, I knew I had to come back. I re-ordered their Killer Noodles and loved how they kept that fun food truck feel in the presentation. It felt playful, quirky, and true to their roots. Their soft shell crab curry dish was also really impressive. It was a bit too spicy for me, but the flavors were bold, layered, and explosive in the best way. Based on what we tried, I have no doubt the rest of their menu is just as delicious. The beef was tender, and it paired well with the potato. - Shrimp Pad Thai (9/10): Good amount of shrimp, and the noodles are amazing. Chili flakes did not add any spice. Very yummy overall. Service: Semi-hard to grab waitress' attention to get boxes for leftovers. They started cleaning the table while we sat there. Okay service, but could be better, Ambiance: Came here for dinner, and they seated us in the middle, where there was no AC running. Dark ambiance and busy atmosphere. Took about 30 minutes for 2 people to get seated! Very loud inside.

He was very attentive and checked in throughout, ensuring we had enough water and beverages. After being sat, we were immediately met with sourdough bread with butter and sea salt. We ordered oysters including 4 that were dressed--very fresh, tasty and I'd return for the oyster happy hour which is Monday to Friday from 3pm-5pm (they are a bit pricey) The star of the show was the octopus--I've had octopus across the US and globe and honestly one of the best I have had, so glad we ordered in.
