I wish they had a 99 ranch supermarket in Ventura county! I would literally go every other day hah! Prices here are great! Cheaper than American supermarkets like Ralph's, Vons, etc and even cheaper than some known Asian supermarkets like Mitsuwa or Hmart which specializes more in Korean or Japanese food. 99 Ranch also sell fresh crab and fish and of course other various Asian ingredients that you can't find at your local supermarket. You can order the fish cooked and fried -amazing!! They also do little mini tasting here during the weekends (like Costco!) and they also have a bakery that sells pineapple or custard bun. My favorite is a hidden gem: TARO dinner buns! These things are amazing! Not too sweet but perfectly flavored. If you like Hawaiian buns, you will enjoy this unique take on dinner rolls. They also sell a lot of yummy latte and milk tea for $1-2/bottle. So that's good for trying something new to see it you like it, you don't feel so committed. We also like their green tea ice cream. Worst customer service experience I've ever had at a market. The employees pretend to not hear you and they treat you like you don't exist when you need help. Coming from the Bay Area to LA, I quickly started to realize that Asian supermarkets were no longer every five miles. Instead, they were basically non-existent. 99 Ranch, or Ranch 99 as some misguided folks say (don't even get into this argument with me--you will lose [haha]), is the savior. Over the hill to Van Nuys for me, it's slightly a trek, but whenever I have my dope and underrated Prius C, I have access to this classic place known to every Asian parent ever. People complain about the cleanliness of this place, but honestly, have you ever been to a non-Japanese Asian supermarket that's spotless? No--they just don't exist. That said, I don't consider 99 Ranch to be un-hygenic or anything. Wafts of durian fade through the air in the produce section, there are definitely some marks on the ground here and there, and the baskets and carts don't seem to be powerhosed or anything on a regular basis, but that's just the name of the game. The prices here are fantastic, and that's why you see so many true immigrants come. What I think is really awesome, though, is that this 99 Ranch in particular has a ton of diversity; there are plenty of English speakers, Asian Americans, and other races walking around. The cashiers know English and most know other languages, so I wouldn't be intimidated coming here in the slightest. The bakery section is really awesome; they have lots of goods and breads, and they're connected to a fresh food section with offerings such as tofu, fried rice, egg rolls, shrimp, etc. The fish section is in the back and has plenty of live creatures as well as...Well, not so live creatures. There are fish butchers on hand to cut them up for you. The snack section is fantastic; tons of American and Asian chips and snacks for great prices unlike the weirdo mall stores that hike up Pocky to $4 a box. Essentially, every product you can think of to create most Asian dishes can be found here--to a limit, of course. Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese cuisines can rely heavily on the products here, and to a varying level Japanese food too; however, I would probably go to Mitsuwa or Nijiya before 99 Ranch for Japanese-related goods. I love ethnic grocery stores like this. Try not to be intimidated shopping here. Everyone working here has been very nice. There are some great buys if you know what to look for. How about a case of Kirin Ichiban or Asahi Super Dry for $14.99. Yeah, I stocked up. Please note, It's four stars because it's the best & closest Chinese supermarket you can find in the valley. The non-prepared food selection is good. You find spices, pastes, ingredients, snacks, etc you would at an Asian market. Huge meat and seafood selections. That is so rare in the valley! The prices aren't as cheap as other 99 ranch markets I've been to around San Gabriel valley, but not expensive. It's the law of supply &a demand....whatcha gonna do. HOWEVER, the prepared foods are a let down. ESP their "dim sum". If you ever had real dim sum or Chinese food (and there's none in the van nuys/studio city/ NoHo btw, with the exception of Sam woo next door) this deserves a 2 stars. Actually, if you've been to any other 99 ranch market with a larger Asian population (i.e. Rowland heights) this hot deli lacks as a whole. Bottom line, I would not bother trying to satisfy my Chinese craving through their hot deli. Sam woo is legit though. Specifically, the pre-steamed pork bun in the refrigerated section is bad. This place is like a foodie's heaven AND a bargain hunter's heaven, rolled into one giant central location. I Yelped that you can get something for ANYONE and food for ANY occasion at Bay Cities Deli (SO true!) - and the same goes for the 99 Ranch Market! When you walk in, there's a counter to the left with lovely pastries and decorated cakes, plus some kept-warm comfort-food yummy things like glutinous (sticky) rice rolls with pork inside and egg custard mini tarts. I can NEVER pass up those sticky rice-pork things, God help me! To the right is an area with bottles of liquor and AWESOME potted trees and orchid plants. We scored a super healthy 3 FOOT tall money tree with a braided trunk for a mere $19.99 - I paid $40 for a tiny desktop one years ago (what was I thinking??). The desktop-seized ones are there too, in ceramic pots near the cashiers, next to the lucky bamboo and more purple and white orchid plants ($17-$19!). Sometimes they even have fruit trees for sale. Getting into the heart of the market can be TOTALLY overwhelming, from the bazillions of sauces and chili condiments, to the fresh noodles and tofu and soy milk and fish cakes, to the sashimi cuts, to the every-day milk and butter and cheese and flour and pasta and "normal" grocery-store items blah blah blah, there is EVERYTHING. The produce is SUPER cheap - I always get a ton of veggies (bok choy, spinach, cilantro, green onions, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, etc.), the Jazz and Ambrosia and Fuji apples we love so much, and even young coconuts there by the caseload for WAY cheaper than anywhere else. By the time we go around the corner to the meat case, it's almost TOO overwhelming - my brain goes into Las-Vegas-like visual overload when I spy the tanks of swimming fish and the basins of live crabs and oysters and clams and so many kinds of whole fish. You can pick a fish, and they will fry it up for you all super-crispy so the tail and fins become crispy and edible like crackers! We always get to the beef cuts and are so shocked that filet mignon can sell for $3.99. Then we get all distracted by parts for sale that are mostly socially unacceptable (but fun to take pictures of): the pork bung, the pork uterus, the beef blood, the end guts, the pork pizzles.......and we make spectacles of ourselves by posing for pictures with these novel parts heehee! Oh, and no - we do NOT buy them! We DO buy the GIANT 3-item combo of hot Chinese food that comes with steamed rice, and are barely able to share it because it's so generous. An AWESOME deal for just under $6! I usually think that orange chicken is over-cooked and over-sauce but theirs is very good. Plus you can get stuff like spicy Japanese eggplant, duck, crispy pancakes stuffed with leeks, salty spicy spareribs and tofu that aren't EVER a crappy Panda Express choice. Then we restrain ourselves from buying EVERY SINGLE KIND of sweet bun they have! These buns are individually-wrapped Hawaiian bread textured things, usually under a dollar each, with custard or sweet mung or red beans or coconut inside or even rolled in pork sung (an evil-good sweet/salty/meaty mix that they roll buttered buns in). On the way out, we pass stacks of onion pancakes in the refrigerated case, and cases of soda and huge bags of many varieties of rice. And then we pay for our groceries and food and 3' tall money tree, and wonder why we don't do ALL our grocery shopping here! It's not quite often I get stuck in the valley. My IQ didn't exactly go down a couple of notches and go "ahh my goosh" or some weird phrase like that. It is freakin' hot up there and I can testify in that it should never be like that. It's like going into a whole new world up here. Some way or another, I was able to encounter this particular 99 Ranch market. Don't know how or why, it's just there for me to find. Granted, it's not as big as the branch in any of more populated Chinese zones like in Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, or even Cerritos. In fact, it's a lot smaller than I imagined. However, it is the same market that carries all the essential Chinese food products and produce. Didn't skimp on the poultry or seafood section either. As the other reviewers pointed out, they really have all the stuffs you are going to get at other branches of 99 Ranch market. The only thing I can imagine that would be wrong would be how tight the place is really is. Also the parking is really bad in here as every space is for compact parking. The big plus is that all the good Chinese restaurants are in this same shopping plaza right on the outside of the supermarket. I remembered that some of my friends who attended Cal State Northridge used to come here for meals because it's the closest other than going to Monterey Park or Rowland Heights for some hearty Chinese meal. For all the people who are stuck in the valley and looking for a place to shop...this probably be the only place you can go for Chinese stuffs. Definitely worth the trip. First time i'd been inside a 99 Ranch Market was either in '99 or 2000. The one in Anaheim (which, since then has improved itself a bit. It's now a bit cleaner and a bit more organized than it was when i first started shopping there). Thing i like about these places is that i'm constantly learning new things. Went here to the VNYs location to pick up some Talapia, so the wife would have a treat tonight. The usual staples: bakery, produce (but the prices for bananas are 79 cents/ pound! usually, they're 20-cents less here than places like Ralph's or Albertson's (i HATE Albertson's - used to work there. it's evil). In the back is a fast-food joint, near the chopin. Anyway, picked out my Talapia, wandered around for a few minutes exploring and when it was time for checkout, i wound up behind this nice woman who had BOXES of this odd-looking...well...it looked like fudgesicles - but the photo on the box definitely didn't look like chocolate. I asked her what was inside the boxes (she had about a dozen of them). Turns out it was snow-pea-sicles (WTF?!?) Yep. Peas made into fudgesicle-like frozen treats...complete with stick. (update: they're actually mung bean-sicles. mung beans are used in Halo-halo). Guess that's ONE way to get your kids to eat their vegetables - make 'em into ice-cream. Will have to try - next time (yeah, next time). They really not that bad. Then i found what i had been looking for: 1.5liter bottles of aloe vera crush (yummy!). This is the only 99 Ranch in the valley, and as such they get away with a lot, including higher prices than I've seen even at other 99's and some pretty inefficient cashier services. Everyone is just kind of there because they seem trapped and it kind of adds to shopping being a drag... But since i am addicted to roast duck and a lot of my comfort foods are motherland in origin, here i am. Produce section is cheap as always but unremarkable in variety. They have really good sales on snacks (pocky, those lychee cup things) and that vitasoy soy milk i've been drinking since i wore L.A. Lights. You really should be going to a Japanese market for 'sashimi grade' stuff because, well, especially with raw stuff you really can be too thrifty: it tends to either have been there awhile or already been of questionable quality. Like other Asian supermarkets the chicken here is on the tastiest steroids ever - they're huge, huge pieces for next to nothing a pound. I mean, everything looks like leg quarters. So come, let's take a trip to San Gabriel Valley sometime when we're tired of paying for fine French or Italian dining or artisan whatever-and-whatever-amen, and I promise you will feast for famine prices. And what happened both times, made the whole house smell fishy, and the fish came out mushy and bitter. My wife and I shop here about 6 times a year we drive out from The Santa Clarita valley because our area doesn't have any Asian cooking supplies and the ones we have are overpriced and very generic , 99 Ranch market is always fully stocked and has many choices for Asian cooking the store has recently been painted and cleaned up and is much nicer the last few months or so . We can get a whole shopping cart full of supplies for around 120 dollars less than 1/2 the price of a national chain store . Great place ! read more

I went there today & bought some items to cook something for dessert. The cashier was the one who put the items in my blue bag & went back to my car afterwards and left it in the trunk. When I arrived home it was only then that I've noticed that the Kara coconut milk was missing. I hurriedly check inside my car but it wasn't there. I really need it so I went back to the store & confronted the involved cashier. She gave my receipt to the manager to check the cctv. After 15 mins, the manager told me that he cannot show the footages but all items was in my bag. In short, I wasted my time & effort looking for the lost item worth $ 1.69. This is the only authentic Chinese super market in the Valley. They have everything from seafood to exotic produce and spicy XO sauce! I suggest taking your time when you visit 99 Ranch Market because there are a lot of foreign items that you really have to study. It's so easy to overlook the good stuff, so I stress taking your time. Also, be patient with the parking and the drivers in this area. I don't know what it is about this parking lot, it's probably just poorly designed. Spaces are tight and limited, even if you have a compact car it's hard to park. Some of my favorite items to get are the fresh raw noodles near the tofu and fish balls. The beef and pork shabu shabu meats are the best here! If you're in the mood for hot pot or shabu shabu you should definitely stop by 99 Ranch Market and pick up all the goodies here. I've gotten their seafood here before, it's pretty fresh. Overall this is a great market. You can even find Yank Sing XO and Chili sauce here. If you want XO sauce, you have to goto the customer service area or ask the cashier at check out that you want to buy one, it's $16 before tax. read more

So, I went on a mission to make homemade Pho...I came here at the suggestion of my nail guy, Ben @ American Nails (who does excellent work btw!) I only gave four stars because parking is horrendous!! But once you get inside, all your parking frustration fades with all the glorious food and products they have! Prices are cheap and the staff was so friendly and helpful, unlike the Galleria Market. The cashier said to me "Your making Pho" I replied "yes!". She gave me a few hints too. Such a great experience here after the nightmare at the Galleria Market in Northridge! So glad this store location exists! I don't know where I'd get some of my staple packaged grocery items otherwise. Various produce here is quite cheap, but be wary of the quality and freshness. Some items I never buy here (ex: mint usually rots within 2 days, and lettuce is often bagged with fruit flies). They carry "exotic" produce such as daikon, nagaimo, thai basil, Yali pear, Korean pear, bean sprouts, purple yam, taro, durian, jackfruit, and persimmon. Inspect all your produce like you're an inspector from the USDA! Freshness is not #1 priority here. I bought collar bone beef here and red dye came off when I put the meat in water. I try not to buy any meat products here. Asian snack aisle. You could spend an hour there just gazing at the colorful packages. Check out the bakery section! They have fresh packaged breads. My cashier tonight was "Yun Y Chan". She was friendly and took such care to bag my groceries neatly so they fit compactly into my bag without anything being squished. I've been coming her since it opened, and go every week with my mom. Everyone is "auntie." It's a great place for Chinese staples, and to try out new things. Lately I've been noticing the Indonesian and Vietnamese offerings there, as well as some hard-to-find Chinese natural remedies like the dried vine fruit "luo-han guo." They have a to-go lunch/ dinner section and bakery, and are right next to a Chinese herbalist if you are so inclined. I go there and ask them to hand-grind their lean $1.69/ lb pork for making my lean pork and napa dumplings. The chicken is fresh and inexpensive, at $1.99/ lb regular price for chicken breasts. The seafood is usually pretty fresh, although I usually just go for the shrimp. Do ask them to deep-fry a tilapia for you though - take it home and then make a sweet and sour sauce with vinegar, red pepper, soy sauce, garlic, onion and ginger to drizzle over, and it's to die for! The produce section has great bargains, although some items can be hit-or-miss. The sale leafy green vegetables are pretty inexpensive (under $0.99/ lb), although they usually aren't rinsed. They usually carry beautiful organic mushrooms at killer prices (though I hate mushrooms, these are pretty) and sometimes stunning garlic chive bunches. There is also an entire aisle of different Asian sauces that I like to browse and experiment with. If you haven't been, you should check it out, and then go to Pho So 1 or Sam Woo's next door for a meal. read more

Wow. So I go here at least once a month and even though it's chaotic at times I always leave here feeling pretty good. BUT today was the complete opposite. I was looking for Kimchi but couldn't find it. I went up to a big guy all dressed in green. He was restocking shelves so I though he'd know. I said, Excuse me... but he put up his hand right up to my face and said, I don't. He didn't even look at me! I was shocked and disappointed. I obviously didn't matter. I felt like just leaving my cart but I already invested too much time shopping. He didn't even direct to someone who could help me. But WOW, I don't think I'll be returning. Just bad customer service overall. I went there early today before the 8am opening time because I wanted to get first dibs on certain foods to celebrate Chinese New Year like the Peking whole roasted duck. When I got inside nothing in the hot food section was out and prepared yet as you would find in other markets ready to start the day. When I asked several employees, one said to come back at 10:30am and another said to come at noon. I left and came back at 11am. When I returned, there was a long line at the hot food section. I grabbed a number and waited for my turn. When my number came, I asked for a whole roasted duck. The lady said they sold out and that I should've come earlier. I told her I was here when they first opened and there were no ducks prepared yet and was told to come back later. She had a shocked looked and didn't know what to say because I caught her lying. I was upset but still hungry, so I ordered a 2-item plate to go off noodles and rice with some chicken dish and some pork-looking item. The food was bland, dry and oily at the same time. It makes Panda Express look good! I walked around the rest of the market to check out the fresh seafood, and that didn't look good either. The fish was anything but fresh looking... very suspect. It had the seafood market etc., but I felt with the refigerated section, the items for seafood or the dishes of food that was already made/prepared was limited. I am use to markets that have tons of already put together dishes. Granted there was a section of some bakery goods that were freshly made. Also a line for seafood/meat section. All you have to do is walk by the Fish section. The smell of dead and putrid fish lingers in the entire market. The meat here js questionable as hellllllll. We've ordered ground beef here that tasted absolutely suspect. Cooking it smelled like something completely different than any other meat. We didn't even eat it. They basically stole 35 bucks from me lol. Describe it? Horse meat maybe? Ground beef mixed with horse meat? Maybe lamb? Hopefully. It smelled like they seasoned it for me. Lol. I use to buy pork belly here but not anymore. It also just doesn't have a good taste to it. The main reason I would come here was for pork belly and some Ramen noodles I could get. Sun noodle is a great company but it's been hard to find they no longer carry it. Nothing in this store ever feels fresh or looks fresh. The best part about this store is getting some sesame red bean mochi balls. Even that... the Staff I've encountered is ALWAYS RUDE. I'm a smiley guy as well and say thank you regardless of the attitude they give to me. Parking lot? Good luck with that. Its always dirty and a mess. Folks park in 2 spaces they're so tiny. If you want some rare snack items it's decent to grab some or find some. Rice noodles and wraps pretty easy. READ ALL THE LABELS of the pre packaged food items you buy! Lots of stuff has warning labels on it. The deli is Meh.. looks tasty but lacks any flavor. Stick to buying Sake and Mochi red bean balls. This place doesnt practice even the most basic food safety practices. One worker by the takeout area was not only serving food without gloves, but when some went on the side of the container, she took her BARE HAND, and moved the food from the outside to flip it in. She also had trouble understanding what I ordered. But the whole place has a vibe of poor food safety practices, like maintaining proper food temperatures. read more

There aren't many Asian markets in the valley, unless you are wilkibg to drive to Monterey Park. I come here to pick up Asian grocery items only. I don't trust m uchbof the American items as I have bought some that are very close to the expiration date or just passed. Produce here is hit or miss. Some are right at their prime so they don't last very long. Service is also very hit or miss. Today, I came in to buy some items and picked up peaches since they were decently price and had a few more days left it in. The cashier (Hiedy Sanc) decided to throw (not an exaggeration) them in a big with cans and three jicamas. When I asked, "can I have the peaches please? I don't want them to get bruised." She literally stopped bagging any other items. And handed me the rest of the items. Mind you I was already helping with bagging. She then grabbed the receipt and tried to hand it to me so she can go to the next customer. I looked at her and said, "can you wait so I can finish bagging since you stopped?". She chuckled and started speaking in Spanish to the next person. Mind you, I also speak Spanish as she saying sorry for the delay. I turned and said, it would go faster if there was help. I am Chinese and know that service isn't the first priority here. It's all about speed and being cheap. So if you are looking for service, I give this place ONE STAR. If I had the choice and distance wasn't an factor, I would go to Hawaii or San Gabriel super store. Prices are cheaper, better selection, fresher items... service is still not great but at least I have better and fresher options. read more

I bought 4 rock crabs and they're all bad, they picked out the dead crabs from the bottom of the water they don't show it to you, bagged and weighed them. The crabs' inside were all black and smelly. I'm never going back there. read more

I have been coming here for years. They have an insane amount of variety of fresh fish, seafood, meat, vegetables, and huge inventory of Asian products. The staff has become a little bit nicer over the years, but all the ladies at the registers are mean, don't smile, and loud. They only smiles you see are from the men and women who bag your groceries. Parking can be a pain in the ass, but nevertheless - Ranch 99 is my favorite market. I used to go to the one in San Jose, when I lived in the bay area, but this one in Van Nuys is great. Even for shock value - you should go to see their fish section. Amazing. read more
